This is great honestly. Violent tendencies don't just go away, so why not channel that violence into something more productive? Martial arts takes discipline, and discipline is a key factor in controlling impulsive violence. Its a win win for the inmates and the prison really if you think about it, the prison makes money, and the prisoners learn curve their violent tendencies and become an accepted part of society again. Bravo if you ask me.

stronger715 Not really. It teaches discipline, that is one of the key principles of martial arts. Hardly anyone who is trained in martial arts uses it unless they absolutely have too. The values it carries with it are too strong.
@@tunod- people are not just violent by nature in the sense that they commit crimes for fun. I've been doing Martial Arts as a 50+ year old man for 3 years. This summer, I took some Muay Thai lessons and mostly I use it as cardio on a heavy bag and to break up monotony of Taekwondo Poomsae. Anyone that thinks Martial Arts will make someone more violent is mistaken. Martial Arts makes an individual into a more disciplined person, and all forms stress the defensive nature of the Art of Self-Defense. Seriously? You want to say its so much more "respectful" than boxing? That in itself, being that you were a teacher, is disrespectful. As a boxer, the sport is very respectful, we train hard at my gym, 3 hours a day 6 days a week. Sparring almost every day, lots of focus on footwork, proper striking form, theres always something to correct. and @Lord Voldemort they each have their places in skill. A Muay Thai fighter cannot outstrike a Boxer, a Boxer cannot beat a Muay Thai fighter in Muay Thai. People who haven’t been to prison have no idea wtf is really going on... also if you don’t know Thailand like this than your not truly Thai... your parents are
So when does the Jean Claude Vandamme movie come out? You know, where he is unlawfully locked up. Then he decides he must learn Thai Kickboxing so he can become the champ and reduce his sentence. I'm sure there will be a Longest Yard twist where the warden wants him to throw the fight or else...
The guy at the end? He was the most articulate, humble and insightful person there. If you're judging someone on looks, you know fucking nothing about life.
People in prisons have one enormous advantage when it comes to any sport... They have more time than they'll ever need to rigorously practice, with no entertainment or work obligations to distract them. Prisoners seem to have a sense of drive that surpasses just about any person living in freedom.
I had the privilege of watching a live Muay Thai event at Rajadamnern Boxing Stadium. The crowd was amazing. If you visit Thailand this is a experience not to be missed.
I think this is a brilliant idea. Those who are in prison are already proven to be violent. Why don't we allow them to become a professional boxer, institutionalising their violence in a more controlled way, while the society takes pride in having such talented, motivated athletes in the national team.
You just spoke my mind, Onuke. Banawoski, its not like criminals fight fair anyway, using guns and knives etc. At least if you teach them how to relieve stress properly, they may stray from their criminal past and pursue a career or hobby in this. Criminals (murderers more specifically) dont need to know how to fight, because they dont fight, they'll just kill you if they really wanted to.
Bananwoski Junior They already know how to fight... you think at 30 years old they get taught to kick that fast? No, shit... they've been doing it since they were 10.
This is such a great way to help people out of prison, there aren’t opportunities for many people with criminal records so giving them something like this to do is so amazing and it offers them a life away from crime
I hear people say Mua Thai boxing is only good for TV.I giggle and tell them to go to Thailand, pick a fight with a real Thai boxer and watch how many seconds you last, been to Thailand several times.Thai boxers are tuff as nails but I never ever saw one act like a jerk to other people unless they were to them first.Good video.
I loved to know about this prison policy,it really gives the prisoners something positive to do and to think about, while staying in shape by doing a very exhausting sport (like all fight sports are) and at the same time boosts the country's reputation on an international level because their national fighters can get a chance to be on the spot light. Much respect to all Thailand's Muay Thai prison fighters from a Portuguese downhiller immigrant in Holland.
Such a great system that can only exist in Thailand! it isn't the opportunity provided for prisoners to get out of the prisons, but it is an opportunity to change their life and have brighter future. I can feel the blood of Muay thai warriors boiling in Thai people in the video. Great martial art, Great culture. Love and respect from Korea.
Thai's speak ok English for the most part, but that's not the case if you're in a small town/village. Lived here for seven years and the majority of people here speak some English. Depends on what region and how big the town is, but it seems like even when I speak Thai with a stranger, they'll speak English back. I live in a smaller town though, so I think they do so they get a chance to speak and practice their English more than anything. Where I live, I hardly ever see a farang. I think English is pretty much a global language now, for the most part.
***** that would actually piss me off. Especially since 9 out of 10 have a relative in the US that doesn't speak english. Just sayin' but I hear your point. Thats why i said for the most part!
Good on Thailand for being the one country to have a Traditional Art that actually works in the streets or better yet, in the ring. Japan should get some credit too, but for whatever reason their less effective arts became more popular.
It's just either pioneering the genre (China) or a country being rich enough to support its soft power export (martial arts, films, music, etc.). Muay Thai is the most effective there is but it will just remain as is if Thailand can't tell their story to the world more effectively.
Japan's art are not less effective, it just got turn into a sport and start losing actual technique that work on the street because they're too lethal to be use in the ring, most martial art suffer this problem.
VICE what an interesting documentary! Please do more coverage of the Muay Thai scene. I know Vice has the fightland-section, but i would really like to see the inside community of the Russian and Dutch kick/Muay Thai boxing gyms. Muay Thai is an old and exiteing martial art, which is action actionpacked.
> live in Thailand > become addicted to Thai narcotics > lose job due to drug addiction > murder family in drug induced rage > sentenced to life in prison > be good at Thai boxing > sentence shortened to 6 months and a good talking to
Welcome to Thailand! This shit happens all the time. They kill > they go to prison > get out > kill again > keep continue. Don't even have to talk about rich people committing crime, jail is not for them. Money can buy everything here ☹️
Idk first off it doesn't matter what martial arts you learn one martial arts isn't better then another it depends on the martial artist America has taekwondo (underrated in a way ) kickboxing wrestling pretty much every art out there
***** useless in the ring... dangerous in the octagon. Muay Thai is, with Brazilian Ju Jitsu, one of the most common martial arts in the UFC. Which is why MMA is much better than boxing
***** International kickboxing rules doesn't allow knees man. Though there are different forms of "kickboxing" that does, like thai boxing, K1 etc. K1 is only labeled as a kickboxing organisation, but doesn't stick to traditional kickboxing rules. Look up WKA rules
***** What most people view as MMA is a mixture of kickboxing and grappling. Usually the kickboxing is mauy thai and the grappling is bjj. MMA rarely involves kung fu and it sometiems uses karate. I am saying that i like mauy thai because it has more standing action rather than technichal grappling which is generally more exciting to watch.
I used to be a fan of fighting, so I joined the military. They made me fight so much that it was pushed out of my system, not a violent bone in my body now lol. These people are being forced to fight, even when they are tired and dont want to, which makes them realize they dont want to fight. The psychological impact is beneficial.
Some will never understand the cultural aspect of Muay Thai competition, goes far beyond the violence in the ring. It's about honor, respect, discipline and being able to make money and an honest living for their families. I would consider myself fortunate if I was an inmate that had the skill to take advantage of this program. It's hope, and an actual path to a future fighting or training others outside of prison with their loved ones
So as a prisoner you can go into the ring and fight in order to reduce time served. Gladiators are not something of the past. Keep us romans entertained.
RandomBattleXP What? Where do you think they got all the gladiators from? Taken from all over the world, thrown into training and then into the arena. Of course they fought outsiders..
True - but in THESE fights today, the people fighting Thai prisoners don't become prisoners, or aren't incarcerated JUST so they can fight Thai inmates. That's kind of what I'm getting at - in Roman times you ceased being an "outsider" when you became a Gladiator.
I came here because of the movie A Prayer Before Dawn. I also recently came back from a trip to Bangkok where I got to train with Muay Thai Fighters. I am currently proficient in Krav Maga and Taekwondo.
That mentality is the reason why when a prisoner gets released they are 90%% more likely to go back. They are treated like animals and trash in prison. Its suppose to be a rehabilitation processes. They are suppose to be able to go back into to society as a rehabilitated person. But because they are marked so badly they can only do things they know which is crime. Give them a semblance of normalism a chance to see that they can make up for their wrong doings by living a honest and good life. Most of these guys are never going to see the outside world ever again. At the very least treat them like humans and give them something to ease their minds.
I feel like the fighters who visit are in sort of a win-win. You win, you get the glory of winning the fight. You lose, you gave a man a closer chance at a second life.
I think the point of it is to get them to do something else when they get out besides that. I'm sure local and even foreign fighting leagues are scouting these fights, and if these guys can get an actual job doing this then they don't need to go back to crime.
***** But most of these guys felt they NEEDED to steal or kill (kill if part of a gang or something). If you take out that need then the chances of wanting to do so will reduce.
no way, this is awesome. You're giving prison inmates a chance to turn their life around, focus on a disciplined sport and even the potential for a career. Its not like they''re just letting inmates with life sentences on the streets for winning a few fights. If they're letting prisoners free from jail, the ones getting free are competing for there country. This is legit.
Adam Peretz Let them learn to cook or something productive this is like using humans as animals and they're already in cages how much more depraved can it get?
The big advantage is that they are fighting because they have nothing to lose, and only to gain, I bet we see some of the best fighters come out from there in the future. They are just raging with testosterone, another advantage for them.
Montaguesh it takes a long time and only the best fighters make it out. If they do win enough to get out, they’ve got a good chance of competing in stadiums for money. It’s a good job, needs a lot of training.
It actually gives them discipline and respect + nearly every Thailand man fights Muah Thai - it's in their culture, there are alot worst things in jail.
howaboutthatsuckah not true, i live in thailand and i know that many people just aim for the face and freak out. although a trained thai person is lethal, its amazing seeing muay thai in an atchual thai ring with all the thai music :) love thailand
Indianpvp MajorPvp I got the impression that Muay Thai was a very big cultural thing, everyone I've met that are from thailand trains Muay Thai and they have said that almost everone does it in thailand. But of course assumptions and "rules" doesn't always apply.
dgwear69 Fighting sports in general, gives people mental focus, discipline, honor, etc. Fighting someone in the ring will almost always brings out mutual respect afterward, even in street fights. Mike Tyson said if it wasn't for Cus D'Amato and Boxing, his life would have been in and out of prison as he started out as a troubled child.
They got it right with the "let them fight to handle dispute". Should be a damn American Right to challenge someone to a fight without bullshit lawsuits....
I think this is an excellent program in an effort to reform violent people. As a kid I used to get into a lot of fights until I got into martial arts karate wrestling eventually jujitsu and MMA. At the end of the day I don't have the energy to be angry enough it somebody to actually fight and all of my aggression is channeled in a space that excepts that kind of behavior and I think that these criminals are being given that same opportunity
Connor Peacock "Conform the world around ME!!!! I'm going to keep doing illegal things until they're legal!!!!" How am I being ignorant when I'm stating facts?
John M Because they're the government.. They control the countries at this point in time. Drugs are illegal right now, and if somebody is involved in it they are going to go to prison. It's nothing but their fault for owning drugs.
John M Also, your point about cigarettes is irrelevant and is a logical fallacy in its self. One is legal, one is not, using the illegal one lands you in prison, and you can't change that unless you start a movement.

Yes indeed
I understand it. As a middle European, I think we don't have any culture compared to Thailand. I'd be celebrating this, too :)

1:30 isn't this dude at the movie called "Prayer before dawn" he was in prison for killing 2 people and is sentenced to life for being a hitman?
yea, thats him
I think this is a brilliant idea. Those who are in prison are already proven to be violent. Why don't we allow them to become a professional boxer, institutionalising their violence in a more controlled way, while the society takes pride in having such talented, motivated athletes in the national team.
meanwhile you teach dangerous criminalls how to fight, yeah great idea!
No, shit... they've been doing it since they were 10.
this is the epitome of fighting for your life. If you want something bad enough as eating or breathing, you will excel.

Love and respect from Korea.
i love that no matter thailand or france they all know english for the most part. I feel i can travel anywhere and get by
Thai's speak ok English for the most part, but that's not the case if you're in a small town/village.
Correct but then I'd have a guide :)
***** that would actually piss me off. Especially since 9 out of 10 have a relative in the US that doesn't speak english. Just sayin' but I hear your point. Thats why i said for the most part!
they only showed the few people in the whole event that knew english. A few of the people speaking actually didn't.
No such thing as less effective. Just depends on HOW you train.

This is so smart because it reduces fights in the prison because people don't want to risk their only chance to get take away
Way more action packed than mma rather than getting caught on the ground they stand up and exchange blows after blows. Freaking intense.

Christopher Pinterich No, but determinedly training in a blood sport might be an indicator.
I used to be a fan of fighting, so I joined the military. They made me fight so much that it was pushed out of my system, not a violent bone in my body now lol. These people are being forced to fight, even when they are tired and dont want to, which makes them realize they dont want to fight. The psychological impact is beneficial.

@@Cyber-BuIIy think about it. Their locked up in prison. PRISON.
Gladiators never fought outsiders though.
I wonder how many of those prisoners were fighting “clean”

i love Muay Thai too but it doesnt change the fact that they are

That mentality is the reason why when a prisoner gets released they are 90%% more likely to go back. They are treated like animals and trash in prison. Its suppose to be a rehabilitation processes. They are suppose to be able to go back into to society as a rehabilitated person. But because they are marked so badly they can only do things they know which is crime. Give them a semblance of normalism a chance to see that they can make up for their wrong doings by living a honest and good life. Most of these guys are never going to see the outside world ever again. At the very least treat them like humans and give them something to ease their minds.

teaching murderers and rapists how to fight, how could that possibly go wrong?

I think this is an excellent program in an effort to reform violent people. As a kid I used to get into a lot of fights until I got into martial arts karate wrestling eventually jujitsu and MMA. At the end of the day I don't have the energy to be angry enough it somebody to actually fight and all of my aggression is channeled in a space that excepts that kind of behavior and I think that these criminals are being given that same opportunity

benblue3 Don't be ignorant
Connor Peacock "Conform the world around ME!!!! I'm going to keep doing illegal things until they're legal!!!!"

John M Because they're the government.. They control the countries at this point in time. Drugs are illegal right now, and if somebody is involved in it they are going to go to prison. It's nothing but their fault for owning drugs.
