  • In this video I use a vertical flash to cast in place some rough Tasmanian black spinels. The casting doesn't work out the way I intended, but it is still a great video running through all the tools I use, how to make a mould, stone placement and casting using a mini smith torch.

    I have a degree in Welding and Sheet Metal Technology.
    The first thing we learned was,
    "Never light your torch with a lighter! Use the striker that was designed to light it."

      Make sure the ring you are making a mould of hasnt got a hollowed out inside, it has to be solid :)

    What stones can I use in this method without worrying about them shattering during casting thermoshock? Great video, thank you so much!

    I would love to see videos of how you set stones that are cast in place but appear as though they’re in a setting like some of Polly Wales’s work. I really love your videos

    Love this video! Is it recommended to use natural sapphires and rubies over synthetic ones?? How likely are they to break? Awesome process!

    Love this! Thank you for these videos- so grateful to find them! Can the silver in that ring be melted with the stones in it?

    • @sandcasting_with_kirralea
      @sandcasting_with_kirralea  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sure can! But I always use that as a last resort. I prefer to pull the stones out before melting if possible :)

    might be a silly question but how do you tell if the stone has shattered?

    Really useful thank you! Ive been struggling to cast in place rough sapphires as the metal doesn’t flow all the way round the ring. I’m using a vertical flask though (ie the object shape is vertical though I am propping it up a bit for casting to try and get some help from gravity! Do you always use a horizontal flask for rings and cast in place stones? Otherwise I’m using enough metal, getting it hot enough, the other thing I wondered is if there is a minimum width band that will cast as maybe my master is too thin? Any advice appreciated 🙂

      There are so many reasons why it would be failing. I would really need to see photos of the failed castings and the moulds they failed in to be give advice. Feel free to email me :)

      I just tried again, with a wide band. Epic fail. The silver only travelled halfway and didn’t even reach the stones in place. Argggh. Back to the drawing board!

    instead of using talcum powder i use spotcheck i spray the model it dries to a white powder then i spray the delft clay i get a better impression with the clay not sticking to the model

    Would garnets survive this form of setting? i have access to a creek in N.E.Vic. which has sapphire, garnet, spinel etc. all around the size of your friends spinel. considering what i would do if i bought a clay kit. also just saw a Melbourne supplier has a cheaper clay, any good? thank you.

    Do you melt down rings that don’t work and take out the stones or are they for the bin?

    • @sandcasting_with_kirralea
      @sandcasting_with_kirralea  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally reuse everything I can! All meatal can be re melted and reformed. But unfortunately not all stones can be saved. But the broken sapphires I use in my sand casting workshops and my students learn to cast in place with them :)
