  • This is tutorial on how to cast in your home studio using the sand casting technique.
    I run you through 5 basic designs, plain pendant, plain ring, pendant with cast in place sapphire, ring with cast in place sapphire and casting a pair of earrings in a vertical flask.
    This is the first of what I hope will be many tutorial videos to come! And hopefully they get better than this one haha

    Hi Kirra-Lea - I am just starting to learn about sandcasting so definitely a beginner. Have watched other tutorials on utube. Yours is by far the best. Of course I maybe biased as we are both from Tasmania :-) Great tutorial. Planning on doing your Beginners Workshop early next year. Thank you so much for sharing. Gaylene Daley

    Totally love the way you teach how to be able to create our own pieces, thank you soooo much for your generosity, You are really refreshing showing what we can do more than showing off or selling yourself like lots in this platform. Fantastic work, I hope are lots more videos coming... and a hug for taking your time to teach, showing tricks that probably took you years to learn and helping us in our own, personal creative journey!

    Excellent tutorial, really good to have the repetition of the whole process again and again so that it sinks in. Best sand casting tutorial I've seen tbh. Would be good as others have said to have close ups of how the 2 halves look prior to casting. Thanks for including the vertical flask as that's the only one I've got!

      Glad it was helpful! And yes I will have to do some close ups with maybe a better camera! haha

    Finally I get around to start casting in my studio. This is so great to have a refresh of the fantastic workshop I took with you in Adelaide. Just wanted to mention that cut & slice in Rubyvale sell flasks that are usable both vertical and horizontal. I am going to try mine out soon. Worried the spout is too much of a heatsink but will try and have enough sand along the edges...

    Hi! Thank you so much for these videos :) I have just started experimenting with sand casting and love it. I live in NZ so it's great to also be able to get most of the things needed in your videos easily. One thing I'm not sure on is where to source the metal from. I have bought some granules from Warburtons here, but is there another way to purchase metal? Do most jewellers purchase granules for sand casting? Thanks heaps!

    Excellent video !
    I am getting to old to make woodwork now and can't be bothered to keep repairing cars so this will be my next hobby and I will use the sapphire we dug on our last trip to ozzie . First job is build a machine for the 150mm lap disks then cast with them. 2questions , what clay is used and why call it sand casting ?
    Many 😊 thanks.

    • @sandcasting_with_kirralea
      @sandcasting_with_kirralea  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally get into it! You will have so much fun 😁
      The clay I used in this video is Delft Clay. But you can also get stuff called Red Clay and petrobond. As for why it's called sand casting if the product we use is called clay...... dunno 😄

    Thank you! Very informative! It might be helpful to zoom in a bit closer for the details inside the flask halves-it is a bit hard to see.

    What is in the red tube that you are putting in the stones?

    • @sandcasting_with_kirralea
      @sandcasting_with_kirralea  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is paw paw ointment :) I use it to genitally adhere the stone in place. But you can use any kind of vasaline type goop for this :)
