  • Time for the start of a new project car series, this time covering a 1991 Pontiac Firebird Coupe with a 305 small block Chevy engine and a 700R4 transmission. My neighbor needed to get rid of it but didn't want to send it to the scrapyard, so he offered it to me for $100 and I gladly accepted. It has quite a few miles and has been sitting for a few years, so there is a lot of work to be done on this project!
Dates of filming: July 8th, 2018 (Buying)
July 12th-13th, 2018 (Oil Change, Washing, etc.)
Song List (Order of First Appearance):
0:01 Birds in Flight - Dan Lebowitz
    1:51 Scapes - Silent Partner
6:40 Pluto - Topher Mohr and Alex Elena
9:13 Golden Days - Topher Mohr and Alex Elena
13:45 Pickup Truck - Silent Partner
16:00 Open Highway - Silent Partner
    16:34 Awakening - Silent Partner
17:26 Days Are Long - Silent Partner

This made me happy and sad. I met my future wife in 1987 when I was 18 years old. She had a new 1986 Trans_am burgundy color. I asked if I could drive it and 31 years passed with us. We also owned a beautiful arctic white 1985 Trans Am. I miss it. But my wife had a stroke this Dec and died Jan 3 2019. Id trade all in the world for her again. But I have memories. Trans Ams are part of it. She actually picked out the Mustang we own now and have had 8 years.. Or I guess I own alone now :( Ill never get rid of it.

My first car was a midnight blue, 1987 Firebird that I bought from my friend, Rich Barone in 1996. Right before I bought it, the car had been in a minor fender bender. My friend's Rich's parents were wealthy and a bit snobby. They were embarrassed to have an "ugly old dented Pontiac" parked in front of their McMansion so they bribed their son, offering him two thousand dollars towards a new car if he would be willing to get rid of his beloved 1987 Firebird. My friend knew I was broke and looking to buy my first car, so he offered to sell me his Firebird for just $250!!! I jumped at the deal. I bought the car 3 weeks before I got my Drivers License. Since I couldn't legally drive yet, I needed to have an older friend drive it home for me. My stepdad and I spent many a Saturday afternoon in our driveway fixing up that Firebird with parts from the local auto junkyard. I Absolutely LOVED that car! I drove it almost all the way through college, until it started to have a series of electrical problems. It kept breaking down and I must have changed the alternator at least 5 times before I decided enough was enough. The car had became so unreliable, I decided to trade it in for a very practical Ford Escort Wagon. I'm in my early 40s now, but I have never forgotten that 1987 Firebird that was my first car. My plan is to buy a midnight blue, 1987 Firebird when I retire or whenever I start to go through a midlife crisis! LOL!

This video hit home with me .. the ending part of the video i really resonate with. My father bought an 83 Mustang GT back in the 90's. He loved that car with everything he had. He drove it everyday and would put it through its paces. Somewhere along the way he lost track of the car, he sold it to a friend when times were tough and never saw it again. I grew up around Mustang culture and the cars themselves. He would always talk about his Red and black 83 mustang and how he loved it. A couple of years ago with the VIN number in hand i set out to find it, and I succeeded. last year on January 7th i brought it home, the look on his face when he saw it is something ill never forget. He was shocked to see it after all these years, and happy that it had survived. He didn't want it though, and told me that he wanted me to have it and keep it alive. That's what i intend to do!
    Keep making these videos man!

  • @geoffws6
    @geoffws6 5 ปีที่แล้ว +28

Wow. I totally relate to you. The Firebird in my profile pics is identical to yours in almost every way with exception to the colors. 1991 Firebird. 305v8 and auto trans. 2:73 rear and T-tops. Mine is black with grey interior. However when I listened to your connection between the car and your Dad, I had to reply. My Firebird was ordered and originally purchased by my Mom brand new from Meadows Motors Pontiac in Manchester Georgia. She ultimately died in 1995 from terminal brain cancer. It was her daily driver to downtown Atlanta and back, every day. After her passing my Dad kept the car for a couple years and then sold it to my (at the time) girlfriend. We married and kept the car a few years and then sold it to some friends of ours because we needed to start saving money. Roughly 10 yrs later, our friends offered to sell the car back to us because it was not needed in their household any longer. We managed to scrape up the funds to purchase it back for the same amount we sold it for. It needed work, just like yours. The engine was replaced at some point with another 305 but it now had a blown head gasket and the valves were stuck. I purchased some Trick Flow 23 aluminum heads for it and got it running again. Since then I swapped it to a carb from the TBI and it has been in my hands since. The 700R4 slips and the rubber seals for the t-tops and doors are shot. All of these are a work in progress for me. Bottom line, the car still needs work but is in great shape compared to most third-gen cars. I commend you for snatching up such a great Firebird. I will be following your progress on the car and if I can help in any way, shoot me a message. Ive done quite a few jobs on mine including fuel pump, power window regulators, the aforementioned heads and carb/intake swap. Good luck with it!

I recently was hospitalized with heart failure and had to sell my '91. Having owned a '69 in the '80's, it took a while to appreciate the gen III bird. I too was unsure about the nose until I found out that the '91 - '92 was the FIRST stock chassis car to break the 300 MPH barrier at Bonneville. The nose was designed, not only to ease the transition to the Gen Iv Bird, but also to house the fuel cell so gas could flow rearward to the twin turbo engine at that insane speed! I regret letting her go, but , like your dad, I enjoyed driving her to work , school and elsewhere for 10 years. Thanks for sharing, I look forward to watching more of YOUR story as it unfolds.

The car was is his everything and defined who he was, his love for cars and especially camaros shed off onto me and they have a deep place in my heart right next to him, when he passed away in 09 i was 8 years old and on the day of the funeral we could get his camaro to start and it seemed as if he took the car to heaven with him and its just been sitting for 10 years now with nothin goin on with it. As the past year has came around and i got my license at 17 i had enough money to buy a 4th 01 camaro that only has 29k miles on it and i jumped right to it, i drove the car for the first few months until winter and now i have big plans for it, and im goin to be using the wheels and steering wheel from my dads car bc i feel like thats what hed love to see from his son. I love my car eith my life and it just brings back all the love and pain i get when i think of my father.

My uncle had one just like it. I grew up seeing it in his driveway but it didn’t run. As a kid he’d let me go and sit in it. Then one day he sold it and I cried for days 😂 I was like 7 and I was devastated

I was never really a big fan of GM. Was mainly a Datsun guy. In fact to this day I still love the 71 240Z... But seeing how you cherish this car so much and how it reminds you of your father's car just warms my heart. My dad is a big fan of British cars. His first car when he moved to the US in fact. Was a 66 Jag 420. I wanted to find one for him but..no luck. Anyways. I hope you make more awesome firebird videos. And I wish you the best of luck

So when I found this video I was amazed on how the firebird looked. I’ve always loved the 90’s style of muscle car. I showed the video to my dad and he likes it. A week later I came home to see my very own 1996 firebird formula ws6 sitting in my garage, it was out next project car. This video honestly gave me so much inspiration for my new car. Thank you ☺️☺️☺️

I find deals like this every so often... just gotta talk to people, knock on doors, etc..
You eventually come across people who really need cash asap, just got into a situation where they need the car gone asap, just moved, and countless other reasons..
Be persistent and you'll get one! 😎👍

I own a 1992 firebird. It’s only a 3.1 V6 BUT I love this car & it’s my favorite body style of the firebird ever! The only thing I want more than mine is the T-top version. It’s an extremely reliable car & a great daily driver. Plus people are always asking about it staring at it & giving me compliments on it!

I’ve read that it should get about 18mpg city but it being old & needing a tuneup I imagine it’s a little less now. But it does great if I’m not hotrodding it around.

Derick Smith I do not know what my average mpg actually is. But my I have a 91 mustang GT & a 1995 V10 Dodge Ram & I’ll tell you the firebird gets better mpgs for sure lol. & it is very fun to drive around town you’ll always catch people staring at it at stop lights, the story of how I got mine is much like the guy in this video. I just paid 500$ for mine compared to the his 100$ lol. When I moved into my first apartment I saw it sitting on the side of the road outside the complex & it caught my eye from the second I saw it. I kept my eye on it for about 3months to try & figure out who owned it but it never moved. So one day my neighbors started talking to me & I asked if they knew who’s car it was & sure enough it was theirs. They told me it was it was a v8 but they weren’t 100% sure & that it had been parked for almost 2 years. I asked how much they wanted for it & they said 500$ so I jumped on it. We walked over to it turned it on. It started first try after sitting for nearly two years & it passed smog first try also I gave the 500$ for it on feb 18th 2018 & I daily drive it now

Derick Smith it’s because most muscle car guys only consider cars from 75 & older as classic muscle cars. At least that’s how it goes in California. & some of the older guys go as far as calling my car ugly. Personally I think this is the best era of firebird mine has this same aero kit as the car in this video. But mine is green & doesn’t have a T-top. I’d definitely recommend buying one if you can find a clean car for a decent price. Most of the ones I see for sale are $1200-3000 for beat down rusted out cars that barely run.

@Derick Smith Well, you could just change the rear differential gears to a more fuel efficient gear ratio. You will need to get the correct gear for the speedometer as well so that the mileage and speed are correct.
