1978 Pontiac Firebird Street Car Project (Ep.1)

  • Let's take a look at the 1978 Pontiac Firebird I bought for $1900 in 2014, and have spent countless hours working on. It is a project car, purchased incomplete and with many parts in poor shape, but a solid shell. This isn't a restoration, isn't a drag car, and isn't a high-dollar build. It's a car built on a budget, and built to be driven.
This video covers pretty much the story up until now of this car, but of course does not cover everything. It also isn't entirely in chronological order, so please don't mind parts changing out of order. I wrote up a table and dropped in every part I could think of, the total cost is around $4200 for the car and the parts covered in this video.
    Timeline of filming: October 30th, 2014 - December 12th, 2017
Song List (Order of First Appearance):
0:01 Surfing Llama - Bird Creek
2:29 Nadia's Theme - Topher Mohr and Alex Elena
2:42 Old Friend - Silent Partner
7:46 Our Distance - Silent Partner
    9:45 Rooftops - Silent Partner
10:22 Old Friend - Silent Partner (Excerpt)
10:31 Easy Breezy - Silent Partner

It doesn't matter if it is fast or lays rubber for a 1/4 mile what matters is that you built it and it is yours. Enjoy it for what it is like you said it isn't a show car. What matters is that you love it.
    Other opinions do not matter.

Manly tears were shed. My dad bought a blue 78 Trans Am with the 400 pontiac but it’s been sitting in our garage for 8 years now and without a steady job and me finishing college, the car patiently awaits the day where we can continue the project. Some day that car will be daily driven all over my country.

My Dad got me into muscle cars and even bought me a 1968 Mercury Cougar. We installed a BOSS 302 and man did she fly. California was tightening her grip and we sold it but, slowly but, surely I talked my Dad into helping me get my 1976 Chevrolet Camaro (Rally Sport). We installed a 350 HO. My Dad passed away about 10 years ago but, I still keep the Camaro running good in his honor. I bet he'd be proud of how far the Camaro has come since day one. This video brings up a lot of memories. It's like we're family now.

This video blows away most vehicle builds on here. You can tell he is a average Joe who does what he can pay check to pay check by himself learning and living the whole way along. Great video got me thinking about my project car in the back yard.

Love Firebirds, if I would have known how rare a yellow 76 formula would be, I never would have sold mine. But it did help get my wife and I our first home. Had a 79 formula, 89 firebird red w ttops, now a black 98 ram air ws6

My father was also a Pontiac man and we had a 66 LeMans ( now mine) a 66 GTO convertible 4-speed clone lost to fire and several other Pontiacs. I my self had a 1989 Pontiac Firebird Formula 350 I bought in Atlanta, Georgia and brought home to Ohio and it was an immaculate vehicle no rust and the A/C even worked and the T-Tops did not leak. But being a young man in 2008 (32) I thought it needed more power so out came the engine and trans and I proceeded to build a pretty strong 350 and in the process I deleted all the A/C shit and all the computer controls, wiring and the TPI injection system and ruined the drivability of the car and sold it, and I regret doing that to an awesome car. I am currently in the restoration of my fathers 66 LeMans because he has since passed away and it will be a tribute to him...completely stock other than a few improvements for safety's sake and maybe a little lower with more meat under it and of course a loud sound system. Just sitting behind the wheel and moving it around in my barn I get nostalgic about all the great times we had as a family at car shows or club meets. My 2 children are graduating high school this year and 1 is going away to college for Chemical Engineering and the other to the Air Force for Aerospace Engineering so it will just be me and my wife taking the car out for drives on the country roads where we live and enjoying the vehicle my father enjoyed with his wife and children and honor the memory of a great man taken from our lives way too soon... bravo to you!

I have a 77 Firebird, owned it for 35yrs. Only now, these cars are getting a thumbs up. Hope you have it on the road still and enjoying it. My car is Firethorn red. When I purchased the car, it had the same stripe on it as yours. I did not add that back on when I had the body work and paint done, I kind of regret it, but it was the 80`s you know lol

I have a 1977 Trans Am that i bought over 5 years ago and it's something I've wanted for sine I was a kid watching Smokey and the Bandit back in 1977. It's been a special project for me and I appreciated and respected your enthusiasm and drive to make that car your own. In the end, it doesn't matter how it looks, just matters how you enjoy it.

This is what car culture is all about friends! Taking something you love, and putting your heart in it. I'm proud of you guy! I'm also obsessed with the 77 440 trans am my mom had as Her FIRST CAR!!! My parents sold it before I was born, but my dad bought it back a few years ago, and it is in worse condition than yours was. But me and my dad are going to rebuild it as best we can. You have inspired me man, and I appreciate it.

Great story and beautiful car! I bought my 79 Camaro about 3 years ago and it's just been an uphill battle but this is the first summer I was really able to enjoy it and take it on some really long road trips. There's nothing like it, being on the road in an old classic car.

I understand the passion you feel for that car. My first love was a 1987 Dodge Ares K Wagon Streetside 20 (good luck saying that all in one breath.) This was a car my parents got me for $500. This thing turned away so many people because it smelled, the AC didn't work, run had gotten into the frame, the seals were bad, the transmission didn't fully engage after a stop, the glove box would open if you hit a pot hole, and the muffler "deployed" one day while a guy in a pickup was tailgating. But that beauty could turn on a dime, had the most comfortable bench seats (with a stylish saddle blanket covering the upholstery I might add), could stop on command, was the widest damn thing on the road, and every mechanic, gear head, and friend I showed it to loved it. I miss that car a lot, but when the transmission failed on me there was nothing I could do. But for a car that gave me more memories per mile and smiles per gallon than I can count it will always be special to me. Some people just don't get it, but that is their loss.

No Radio but man she can spit out a sweet tune! NICE vintage, classic vehicle, story & presentation! However, I wish she'd come back to Ohio w/me!!!??? I am simply in love with Camaro's, especially 3rd gen's but, my brother had Three 2nd gen's, 79 Z-28 W/73 SB 400/406 stroker, 78 Trans-am 455 H.D(Which really was a gem!)., & A 77 Firebird W/301 THAT RAN SMOOTH! Life & needing a daily driver has always gotten in the way of me owning my dream car. Maybe one day? I cannot afford a c8 Corvette & the price of 3rd gen's keep going up.

Dude that is awesome. It's so nice to see a forgotten old "smog era musclecar" come back from the grave. I had a 75 Firebird, 350 big block. I rebuilt the engine and put the widest tires possible (too wide if I'm honest) on it, with Corvette 25th anniversary rims and to top it off, a 400 Firebird Formula dual-scoop hood. It was badass and I loved it. Sadly, I went to jack it up one day and the frame literally broke in half. Damn you salty salt. I miss that car. Best of luck with yours.

I have a 78 Redbird. I changed it around to a muscle car and show car. All details were covered. I have small B&M blower. Headers run to mufflers minus that converter. I also have cut offs welded in to run straight headers in races or dynos. I had highway gears that I swapped out and placed 4.10s in. It's cherry red. I didn't want this car at first. I could have bought a Bandit version. At the same car show these 2 set. The Bandit would eventually need changes I ended up doing to the Redbird. But the Redbird was a 1 owner and sooooo clean. Always garage kept, and no use to race it bc it was a cruiser for highways. It was perfect for the 17 year old me. I had a pretty car for high school. At the end, I parked it and began a beast mode overhaul.

I have been getting an inclining to build one. I want to do like what you did. Almost a rat rod kinda thing. I saw one up in NH, blue, like my dad's . I need that one, keep the patina, and modernize the engine and suspension and race that thing. My dad would love it. And he would yours. Keep it up mang.

Thanks man. You sure brought back some wonderful memories. I always loved Firebird Esprit's, Formula's and Trans Ams. That looks like some real fun wrenching. You have to start with a solid car, though, or it'll just end up in the back yard because the money isn't there in the everyday Joe's pocket to do a wreck right. I'm either going to get me a T/A again, or, at long last, an El Camino. Thanks for the inspiration!

Around 15 years ago, I got myself an 82 Trans Am to work on. Unfortunately, working on cars as a hobby turned out to be really hard in Switzerland because we just don't have the space for it. Our garages usually are just wide enough for the car to be parked in and for you to get out, usually uncomfortably. What you people in northern America call a double garage would probably house 4 cars around here.
I sold the thing to Germany. Your videos prompted me to send the dude an email. It seems he more or less completely rebuilt the thing in the meantime and while there is an elemnt of yearning to it, I'm really glad that my car got the attention it deserves.

Beautiful car man! I bought a beat up old 79 Formula a few years back for $ 1500. Came with a 350 just like yours so i rebuilt it for $3000 got it all up and running amazing and found out it had stage 4 cancer. Body shop couldnt believe i was still driving it around it was so bad. So i looked for a few weeks on craigslist until i found a 79 trans am roller for $3500. Drove to wisconsin to take a look at it and it was beautiful. The T-Tops leaked and rusted out the floor panels but everything else is perfect. The guy that owned it picked it up from Tennessee and between this and his 57 Belair he didnt have the money to do both. So after lots of haggling i got the price down to $2800 and it came with an extra 350 and tons of extra parts for it. So i got it home and dropped it off at the body shop where its sat for a year now because they want cash upfront for working on it before looking at it. So i bought the floor pans and a brand new carpet for it. Just found out a buddy of mine has a 400 for sale so im going to pick that up this weekend and start the building process. Ive never been more excited to get to work on one of my dream cars. Theres nothing like it out there. It makes me happy to see that other people have such love for cars. Great video!

This video really is badass, coming from a fellow Firebird owner as well, only mines ten years newer but either way she’s still a ‘bird 🙏🏽

This video brought back some memories thanks brotha! This was my first car also! 78 firebird with a 350 chevy same rootbeer brown color also. I eventually painted it satin black. Unfortunately it caught fire before we sold it. But now I recently purchased a 1968 firebird to start the journey again.

My best friend had a new 1977 T.A. and I was so jealous cause we were both 17 yrs old but he was the one with the brand new TA 6.6... I agree, those body styles were so cool. It was the first year with the dual square headlights which is what really caught my eye back then...

Loved every second of it bro, thanks for sharing such amazing story. I just bought a 2000 Chevy Camaro really bad condition and well I’m doing the same things as you. Not my first vehicle but my first car too, it also isn’t too fast but driving it on th roads with the loud engine and the windows down is priceless. I am also looking into supercharging it too soon haha but good job bro I relate so much.

Its funny how your father owned an '82 Trans Am as my father did as well in the early 90's and was black and gold. He currently owns a grey 1980 Trans Am and I hope to buy a 77 or 78 black t-top Trans Am and build my dream car, The Bandit. I also hope that I will buy my Dad's T/A as well. Love your Firebird and keep up the good work buddy!

I love Fier Bird but never owned one. Instead, I used to own a Camaro in the late 80's model. Cars those days look great. So enjoy your riding!

That's an amazing story dude me and my wife is doing the same with a 1988 Camaro sport coupe, there's nothing like building your dream car and what you showed in this video is very Inspirational to many of us that has project cars. Definitely a thumbs up and subcribe 😊😃
