10:40 Three Types of critique against Hallaq.
    11:43 Critique Type 1 - Hollow/Empty Critiques.
    23:48 Critique Type 2 - Islamist Critiques.
    30:50 Critique Type 3 - Realist Critiques.
40:36 Key issues raised in the Preface and Introduction.
40:56 The subtitle as the real title: "A critique of modern knowledge".
42:25 “Orientalism” as an indispensable heuristic.
44:00 Orientalism highlights the difference between superficial Identity VS the Substance of persons.
58:20 Orientalism is a euphemism for the hegemonic modern (Occidental) way of knowing; it is not monolithic or concrete.
1:02:38 The Imperative upon us, and the Faux-Imperative.
1:06:27 The importance and limitations of Edward Said's work.
1:19:59 Where Edward Said's work can take us (or, where we can take it).

Amazing episode. Restating Orientalism is a masterpiece to understand how Orientalism and Western Modernity transformed every society and how modern knowledge was a weapon to dominate and destroy social fabric of non western society especially Muslims.

Imam Tom rightly speaks about the khilafah being normative to Islam.
He is correct, that details need to exist and be pondered over, however what he dismisses as "slogans" misses that purpose of this "simple messaging". What he calls "sloganeering" does serve a purpose in the grand scheme of things. It helps to create awareness and an opinion amongst the masses for the Khilafah. There is a need for high brow discussion and low brow (slogans). They serve different purposes.
If imam Tom would like to engage with details on economics and other matters there are intellectuals in Hizb ut Tahrir who have written and researched these issues at length.

Cover page indicates a piece of paper that has been unfolded after sometime…which is indicative of how Said’s critique although significant was folded and kept away by most of the Western intellectual hegemony. Given current events this is a very timely discussion for “unfolding” of the ummah’s legacy

Imam Tom, Islam is a religion that is simple and easy to understand and goes straight to the essence of the divine design, called Sharia in which the people are called to 'cultivate Iman'. God has given you the power to feel if you are cultivating Iman or not (be-Iman), those who are Imandar (who cultivate Iman) will end up in heaven, otherwise Hell. You and Paul are special and are destined to reform the moral mindset of the whole world.

Powerful conversation, colonization even in our modern society is still very much alive institutionally through politics, academia and media. Understanding that and being aware of it is important for us to be able to keep our identity, it was not too long ago we have seen western society wipe out native people, their culture and the entire sense of who those people were. We are at a standstill where modern society believes that Islam is ‘holding’ them back so we need to be much more aware of these systems at play against us. Surely this is will be based on returning to our faith with renewed interest in it and furthering the knowledge and preserving it further.

That is certainly the aim of Sharia - ie the betterment and success of people and communities. But it falls short since there is a whole divine set of rulings that are not within the ability of man to rationalize or devise on his own.

The identity politics is real among Muslims. Whether the affinity is to a tribe, a nation state or even a race. We claim to be united under the principles of the Quran and Sunnah but the colonial mindset is alive and well. But Alas this is the Jahiliya the prophet pbuh warned about for it manifested during his time among the sahaba. It is a sin as old as man for the Shaytan was the first to call on his suppremacy in defiance of Allah.

I study evolutionary biology, and they often use the term "colonization" for a new species taking up residence in a new habitat. This term cannot be neutral, and is an imposition not just on nature, but on how we think of biology, subħānAllāh. I often wonder about how we can think about biology in a way that helps us to understand it on models that are faithful to reality.

In the pre-modern era, the Islamic State and Ulma co-existed in an agrarian world where the State had a very small footprint. Even in the past Ulma as caretakers of Sharia were careful not to step on the toes of the rulers, and the Sultans left Ulma alone. Muslim rulers always got a pass from Ulma when it came to their personal or court affairs. Ulma avoided challenging the legitimacy of a ruler because of the fear of the state's power. Now modern state is the norm, whatever its shortcomings we can not do without it. So how do you bring back the Sharia paradigm? Can you shed some light on this?

Hallaq point of view reminds me of Joseph Heinrich books in which he argues for the cultural superiority of the West with history, anthropology and psychology, that leads to Western domination/hegemony. This is very similar to Hallaq's view, yet the value judgement is the exact opposite, in which is celebratory. If so, the picture get very dark but clear quickly. Modern knowledge is a deal with devil, faustian in nature. It grant tremendous power which the West build their empire upon. If so, they have no incentive nor capability to change, as they built their entire throne on that. Basically, this is a "Live by the sword, die by the sword" dilemma. It is sounds more like steroid or weird mutation than virus to me, as it gives some tempting benefits short term, yet extremely destructive long term. Though, the infectious makes it more suitable to call it a virus. It is also convincing as modern science has its cultic roots which it wants people to forget. Even the icon of science, Sir Isaac Newton was very religious and into alchemy, which is a cosmic irony as his worldview became a strong foundation for atheism.

Wael Hallaq said, "My recent work has been arguing that there is no way to reach a genuine solution unless it begins from within ourselves. If we want to change the world, we need first to change ourselves, our subjectivities, our ways of thinking, or as [Reforming Modernity] argues, we need a new concept of the human."
Talk, talk, talk, intercepted with surmising the impossible possibilities, is useless.
Turn this endless stream of analysis and conjecture into a plan and make it happen.
Wael, safely in his ivory minaret tower, needs to climb down and sit around the table with *real* players with skin in the game and make it happen. So far, he is merely continuing Islamic reminiscence for the good old "golden years" while Islamaniacs stew in their sharia juice.

    Dear Alie,
Islam is only Quran & Sunnah (performing 5 pillars of Islam, rituals, Islamic calendar and few other things). Unfortunately Sunni and Shia Hadith books and Imamate traditions have fabrications, polemics and errors + good things too. The new Muslims should be careful about choosing from Islamic traditions. Just a sincere advise, I am a Sunni Muslim myself but our traditions require more scrutiny.

    ALLAH is saying
All the praises and thanks be to ALLAH, Who has sent down to His slave ( Hazrat Muhammad Mustafa S A W ) the Book (the Qur'an), and has not placed therein any crookedness.
(He has made it) Straight to give warning (to the disbelievers) of a severe punishment from Him, and to give glad tidings to the believers (in the Oneness of ALLAH Islamic
Monotheism), who work righteous deeds, that they shall have a fair reward (i.e. Paradise).
    They shall abide therein forever.
And to warn those (Jews, Christians, and pagans) who say, "ALLAH has begotten a son (or offspring or children)."
No knowledge have they of such a thing, nor had their fathers. Mighty is the word that comes out of their mouths [i.e. He begot (took) sons and daughters]. They utter nothing but a lie
