The paint has very poor adhesion. If you blow some air across the paint it will blow right off. The car is not original as it has been painted, interior is not stock ,engine is not stock. The car needs to be completely stripped ,rust fixed .and body worked and painted.
Thank you for that expert breakdown and analysis. Gold Star for you.... I am sure with your 30 plus years of experience and portfolio of award-winning car builds you could teach Bad Chad and the rest of us so much more... Bravo 👏
I like what he's doing here for a couple of reasons. One is that the process he's showing us really does work well when you are trying to do a spot repair while trying to match sub par body work on a rat rod type vehicle when the patina is extra funky and worth saving. I've done the same thing on sections of cars that needed repair in certain areas but were also beautifully worn out and aged throughout the rest of the car. It works. Another reason I appreciate this process is because of paint blending. I don't care how precise the paint mix is, you're not going to be able to to match that unevenly faded existing paint enough to fool the eye without either spending an obscene amount on multiple tries to match it, or blending into the adjacent panels. That panel blending would never look good, because the paint is unevenly faded. But you can keep the blending area small by sticking to the one panel, in this case the door, do your best and stay away from the edges of the panel; they are already naturally blended into the adjacent ones. If you do end up panel blending, it should be a judgement call based on how the door came out. And if the rest of the existing body work eventually falls off, well then you can decide if you want to get into painting a wider area.
Great job! I can not believe you got the new paint to match the old stuff! Guess I learned something. I want to walk around the car in the sun and see how well it blends with the old stuff.
Repaint the door, don't cut corners here and try to get lacquer from a restoration paint supplier. fixing little spots on one door is really cheesy have you not learned anything! The lacquer paint failed from being hit some how. Lacquer is very fragile and peals easily when hit. Do it right.
Not a fan of doing things half assed, if you’re going to flip it what you are doing is a waste of time and adds no value to the car. If you’re going to keep it you should have done the whole door the right way!
@@thomast596Most of us ,who actually restore vintage autos and find this unbelievable and commenting are not the fools and neither is Chad. The Volvo isn't as desirable in its original state, what you recognized was, the Volvo was a car from the fifties, still stuck in a forties body style ( maybe the war kept the company from design advancement) and it was a perfect candidate for custom design, whereas the Ford was made during the depression and few people had the money to pay for food, let alone even dreaming of buying a new car and a few short years later the war effort would need to use the car manufacturing industry to produce jeeps, tanks and planes. Maybe in 20 or 30 years that type of Volvo could become more desirable as originally built, but I would rather have your Volvo now than having your Volvo restored to original. But I would never consider changing the Ford. You need to wear one of those styrofoam barbershop quartet straw hats and a letterman sweater when you finally drive the Ford

Decent professional paint without body work is $25k. Just because ole mate Chad's can do it in his shed for a dollar fifty. A decent shop is charging $100ph. Even a service centre charges $160ph to service a car. What a mate or w car club associate does it for isn't the same as going to a professional custom paint shop and I was referring to striping, body work and paint. @@aaronmycar9166 My point is ,this specific car with very little body needed except the doors . This car to be a nice all around driver could be sitting on the floor is worth approx $ 50 - $80 k depending on a few things ,one being quality of the restore . Buy it at $15 - $20 k, and spending another $25- $30 would be very reasonable and is done all the time . Most I know including myself would do the paint . I am average to good at paint and it would look good but have friends that would do an ace job to bring its value to a decent level . It depends on what was the initial price and WHO bought it . Agree ?
We can agree on the estimate value and the cost for the specific purpose you are talking about. You've added some context like, all round driver. Now imagine you have about 30 cars and you're just going to park it in a shed with the rest of them, unlikely to be driven for more than 30 minutes for the whole time you own it. You're just going to look at it for the amount of time it takes you to walk past it to get to the project you're actually working on. You might just want to patch it so you don't see big patches of paint missing for the 2 second glance. I've got a 1925 dodge. It will never leave my property. Should i spend $25k (or whatever price you want to put on it) or should I patch it and buy another one for $25k to add to the collection that will never leave the property?

All the time wasted on the Volvo fixing rust, and he rushes this automobile masterpiece. I believe he is just making it look more appealing before he flips it.
Even though the rust wiped off, doesn't it suggest that the paint failed and that there's rust all over? I'd reach out to a fella like Kevin Tetz for an opinion.
What everyone fails to understand is a car is only original once, so what Chad is doing is ok by keeping the old paint and just adding where it is needed and blending it in. The bodywork most people writing in the coments want to see would take longer, to do and then do you stop doing the bodywork, before you know it the entire car would be in bare metal just like the volvo.
I think you’re doing an excellent job on everything. Don’t listen to the naysayers and that latest car you bought do whatever you want to it Chad it’s yours.

Thank you for that expert breakdown and analysis. Gold Star for you.... I am sure with your 30 plus years of experience and portfolio of award-winning car builds you could teach Bad Chad and the rest of us so much more... Bravo 👏
@@chieftain_buildz Easy there, Chief, bead blaster is clearly a 'very stable genius' !!
Why should the door be stripped and perfect when the whole car is imperfect and covered with cracks & chips. Carry on Chad.
Repaint the door, don't cut corners here and try to get lacquer from a restoration paint supplier. fixing little spots on one door is really cheesy have you not learned anything! The lacquer paint failed from being hit some how. Lacquer is very fragile and peals easily when hit. Do it right.
Chad will get it in the end but tape was bad idea
Not a fan of doing things half assed, if you’re going to flip it what you are doing is a waste of time and adds no value to the car. If you’re going to keep it you should have done the whole door the right way!
We really need to clarify the distinction between "patina" and ugly rot. Let it go!
Most of us know, but as you grow up, you too, will learn these things !!
A BALLS OF A JOB DO IT RIGHT OR GIVE IT TO SOMEONE THAT WILL
The whole car needs to be stripped, and repainted.
Screaming like a fool 😂

@@thomast596Most of us ,who actually restore vintage autos and find this unbelievable and commenting are not the fools and neither is Chad. It’s his car but they are correct in saying in the hands of many of them, a better job is expected and deserved for this car. If you don’t understand that, you are clearly the real fool .

Can't believe what I am witness too. Attempt at rust repair and metal prep is a real chit show.
Without Nat and Dougie displaying some workmanship, this channel is going to the dogs.
Seller should have found a real buyer who would appreciate a rare antique classic 34 Ford.
I hope tomorrow BC and QJ don't waste another hour doing the lower portion of the door.
Hopefully you will never know !!
You kidding? They'll show every single piece of tape applied, every swipe of sanding as they wanna milk every viewer minute they can. Then we get to see every piece of tape peeled off. Yes, that guy should have taken this car to an auction house, but he was thrilled to sell it to the celebrity Weasel.
Jeez give the guy a break! He told us he is not gonna chop it, be happy with that. If he wants to try a quick & dirty paint touchup , what is the heartburn? Can always strip and repaint later if it fails...
Potentially a $110,000 car with a complete paint job. Not an expert or professional by any means but i would paint it and keep that engine
Do the hole door what stopping the rest of paint from peeling off
Whole.
Its all about content making money, they dont care about the car, theyll just sell it later,...and they made their money

What a great idea!👍

I'm a big supporter of yours Chad, and I usually disagree with the negative comments. But this repair is super sketchy and disappointing.
I 'm wondering if the existing paint that still on the door might flake off at some point in the future.
Of course. Then just keep filling it in. Don't spend money if you don't have to.
No surprise work on the Volvo has stopped.
Along with his other "projekts" I wanna see the hot wheels ford completed! But that was years ago..... Now he has a dodge to convert to a 2 dr (why??) along with the hudson(s), volvo??? etc. Dude has automotive ADHD.

Chad i always supported and defended you but you are wrong on this one buddy!!!!This is a car that should have gone to a restorer..
What you are doing to the volvo is great and i realy like what you did , but this car should be done properly...
I agree with you, when a car rolls in and in bad shape ( condition) the sky is the limit why not make it to YOUR liking
The Aussies do things right...They would really appreciate this historic gem
True but if we took it to a professional body shop we'd also pay up to $100k to have it done properly and then maybe sell it for $80k 😂
@@aaronmycar9166Not true at all, a quarter that would get you a very nice paint . To do a full concours quality level this car could be done close to $40-$50K . We have many enthusiasts in our club that would do a complete for $30k and be a high level job. Why are just talking such BS ? You obviously just don’t know.
One side of chads car needs rust removal so add custom fabrication as well.
I know it's your car Dude but i think just fix the paint and get her running and Enjoy cause she's Lovely 👍 Go for it Team Hiltz 👁🐅👌

@@dangonzalo4039 Chad is just trying to make a quick buck $$$ and cover up a big problem and sell it to someone else what a looser.
This is a great tutorial.... I've own 42 vintage cars..... no junk. Many Vintage. This car is exceptional . wagorak :)
Wrap sandpaper on a pencil for the indents ...
Shortcuts are nothing but bad news that car deserves better
If you sell it, the buyer may not want quickly painting. They will just have to strip it anyway, if they want to have it show quailty.
I think you’re doing an excellent job on everything. Don’t listen to the naysayers and that latest car you bought do whatever you want to it Chad it’s yours.
I love the 34 and I love hot rods BUT! This one is so cherry!!! Love the door paint idea and agree with the engine although a hot rod flat head engine would save the drive train???
Great decision on not stripping the whole door. I think that would take way too much out of the original car. Super cool car!!
good repair plan Mr Chad, 👍people don't realize that even putting 1000 hours of body paint work on it would still not make it a perfect car
Nate and Douglas. Haven’t seen either in a while.
Oh, just SAND IT! You can and will be putting more on.
That's a real bad way of doing this door repair. The only way to do it is to strip it to bare metal and do a proper job, no short cuts. But, many a time you say that it's time consuming, you not restoring, so I give up.
lost me when he said paint it with a brush
I have my share of old cars and and in some cases once you blow them apart most people will lose interest fast after they see all the work that goes into them. All I'm saying is it's his car all the comments are not going to do anything to change that fact.
Gonna be hard to not strip the damaged paint if you are gonna try color blending and matching.. you might just chase the damage.
This car deserves a complete ground up frame off restoration. At least remove the door and restore it.
Does a ground-up restoration need the door to be taken off ? !! Oh dear, LMFAO !!
Yeah, why not completely ruin it? Patching up the most unsightly part (after 90 years) is far more in keeping with a car of this type. It is a Ford, the poor man's car, not a Hispano!
You could fix and paint the whole door then set it in the cold shed , the paint would cracked like what's on it. I've done it
so as predicted volvo on permanent back burner
