    At the Cat AMD I work for (Authorized Marine Dealer) we are told NOT to separate Cat cylinder packs... aye aye sir! But I don't like it as how do you know the wrist pin clips are properly installed, and the rings are spaced correctly? But we are told to o ring up the liners, and shove the whole assembly in, ka-chunk!

    • @AdeptApe

      Well I've done them both ways. It's faster to put the assembled packs together, but harder as you have to fight the rod, rod bearings, seals and the entire heavy assembly all at once.

    • @johngoldsmith6629

      I cannot say in the marine world. But on truck engines, I was in on a phone conference from Cat. We was told to check liner projection with out oring seals. I ask the question on why is the pack assembled and the piston not in a piston pack like the smaller engines. No answer.

  • @sjair6526

    Seeing you put the connecting rods in without checking bearing clearance with plastigage was at first a little concerning. However I do have to respect the fact that you have done this many times and I have done it zero times. Checking it by feel must be something that comes with experience. Also, are those rod bolts one time use? If you wanted to check the rod bearing clearance, could you just torque the bolts down without going the 90 deg? It does seem like plastigaging the bearings on your back with oil dripping on your face may be a little extreme. I have put a few smaller engines together and I don’t know that I would have been comfortable putting them together without verifying bearing clearance.

    • @johngoldsmith6629

      Very rare you need to check bearing clearance on a Cat crankshaft. That is factory and with factory bearings. And when checking bearing clearance, you cannot use a impact to turn the fastener. Even OS, US or OS-US. as long as Cat milled both parts. Now how do you check main bearing clearance with the engine in the frame?

    • @markm0000

      Plastigauge isn’t very good anyways. If you’re worried about clearances just put a dial indicator on the rod cap and tap it back and forth.

  • @mikekahl4745

    Do you ever put tread protectors on the rod bolts when installing so they don't scratch the crank journals?

    • @AdeptApe

      Well, these rods don't have studs, so I would have to put them on the bolts while installing the caps, so that doesn't really make sense.

  • @Rprecision

    • @markm0000

      It’s always better to rebuild an engine out of frame so everything can be checked and all seals replaced. Doing a in-frame always has a risk.
