I removed all 12 injectors on a 3412 marine engine. I turned the main fuel supply tap off. When I came back in the morning to fit the new injectors, the whole engine was full of fuel, cylinders, exhaust manifold and intake manifold. I spent all day with an oil sample gun sucking out over 6 gallons of fuel. Turns out the main fuel shut off valve was faulty 🤬
Next time use a long hose and compressed air. Type in easy syphon with compressed air by Mac’s garage. You’ll see what I mean. It’s so valuable to have that knowledge. If you’re able to block off most of the openings with rags you don’t even have to mess with the hose just blow shop air on top of the fluid and it will press down enough with a little more pressure than atmospheric pressure to start the siphoning process.
18:00 Seeing your drill extension brought back memory of about 4 years ago. Good customer hd brought their car. Did some brake and exhaust work. I went to pull it out and it started a bit rough. I checked the plugs and it needed a set. Dude i had working for me did them in about 20 minutes. He left I went to move the car and started it it sounded like rocks in a tin can. He had used my locking extension from HF. The set screw that goes between the collar and the rod inside the extension fell out into cylinder. I had to buy an engine to get a good head and slapped it on. He said he noticed the extension was fucked up but didnt say anything.
Was an auto tech for many years. I use large sheets of cardboard on gravel, I find I slide very easily, give it a try. I only worked on a few diesels in my time but I really enjoy your work. Thanks
I enjoy making the old heads cringe by sliding around shirtless in the asphalt and acting like I don't have rock in my back. Even boss man found it funny when I was welding and grinding on the trailers. Was like you called me in on a Sunday and we are closed, so it is what it is.
I bought a l90b Volvo loader years ago and got a good deal on it because Volvo said it needed a head gasket. They supplied everything needed to replace the head gasket so I made the deal with them. It was putting pressure into the cooling system. When I was troubleshooting I found that an injector cup was leaking. I didn’t know how to get it out so I crafted up an idea and it worked. I used a tap and tapped it into the brass injector cup and then used a slide hammer to pull the cup out with the tap. It worked perfectly and after it came out I discovered why it was leaking. The tip on the injector cup had broken off. Sometimes you have to be creative when you don’t have all the tools. Great video and I’m glad you are getting lots of work on your own.
We're not prohibited from using steel hammers, but we're supposed to wear a full leather apron, long sleeve shirts and pants, eye pro plus a face shield, and leather gloves any time steel on steel hammering is happening. But we just had steel cutting devices get banned. Gotta use ceramic blades now.
@@ReputableRides-bb7wy pay and benefits are great. Plus, neither of those stupid rules are enforced. They were put in place due to other stores having a high number of injuries. We've only had one reportable injury in the 5+ years I've been there.
Had a fuel in the coolant problem on a Mack MP10, very weird tho. We thought it was cups at first and changed them. Unit ran for like a week after no issues, then it happened again. Tried other things, had the head pressure checked and such, but each time it would take a week for the fuel to show back up in the coolant. Turned out the older 7th injectors were cooled with coolant, and this one cracked internally. When the truck would push fuel into the coolant on regens
The International injector cup tooling for the DT466 uses a tap and an adapter with a slide hammer for removal. I liked to use grease on the tap for lubrication and to help catch the metal shavings. The tool seemed to work well, but the slide hammer was hard to use on cylinders 5 and 6 if the cab was in the way. I like the puller style you were using. Thanks for the great videos!
I have been watching your videos for a while now. My company trucks are primarily Cummins X15's. But I just personally bought a truck that has a cat 3126. So now your videos are even more valuable to me
Thanks for another interesting video! I made a vacuum collection container from a Preen container. I drilled one hole to snug fit the shop vac and a small hole to fit a 3/16" fuel line. I can adapt it to different sizes as needed. It give me a nice way to suck out oil, antifreeze or whatever from head bolt holes or whatever small places that need to be, sucked!😊 Keeps the vacuum clean and rhen properly discard the contents!
The cat tool blows! Its just a bolt, and some washers, that don't work! The installer is just a master bearing plate installer. I used this kit on a 349 cat excavator, worked amazing, just put some bearing mount on very bottom lube, up. New seals, use installer 😊
I have that cup tool kit....I put foam ear plugs down in the small end of the cups at the bottom before I tap them out. Works good and can do all 6 at once and they come out with the cup.
Because I watch your channel and everyone gets to hear the goat scream last Christmas I received the plastic screaming goat as a gag gift. Scares the heck out of my dog and he is not one to shy away from anything. Love the videos and thankyou.
I used a similar cup removal tool on my C7 but it did not come with a plug. I used grease on the tap to prevent the metal shavings from falling in to the cylinder. It, luckily, worked fine for me.
Cat has a two bolt injector pulling group 367-3070 shown in 2020 dealer service tools catalog! Have used it many times and works well! Works on C9 as well.
I work on underground mining equipment and Maclean bolters with Mercedes-Benz 904 diesel engine. I have always seen coolant in fuel and never fuel in the coolant.
Josh I’ve been a subscriber for some time now. I really like your videos & I’m glad you left Cat to keep doing what you’re doing. I am not a diesel mechanic & I know very little about them. I’m a car guy. Why do the injectors even have the cups vs machining the actual head to accept the injectors?
That is a good question, all the Cat engines use removable cups, but perhaps there is a good reason why they even use them instead of just a casting. There probably is a reason, but I don't know it
Hey Josh, when I was a field tech at empire I thought I saw a bigger sample bottle in the cat store. Might be worth checking out. Atleast another ring bigger. Thanks for the videos, is a beautiful place up there!

Not questioning your technique, I'm just interested in chemical usage. Why hexane instead of acetone? Do you use hexane for other processes around heavy equipment?
I wish he would answer this about using hexane. I use diesel in a spray bottle for cleaning parts and work areas. If I need something perfectly clean I go over it once more with isopropyl then blow it dry. I’ve moved to a ton of spray bottles for all my chemicals and it’s very convenient.
Thank you, great video! I was wondering if you needed to drain the fuel tank after the repair, since there still might be coolant in it. Or would the fuel-water separator catch all that? Thanks!
I worked at a facility and knives were banned. You had to have special permit, and if caught using without that permit resulted in being black listed. Sometimes it makes no sense why companies won't let you use common tools.
Curious what the syptoms were. Was engine running rough etc? And would it hurt the engine to run it for a long time this way if it wasn't running noticiably bad? Reason i ask is I bought a C7 truck from auction and i noticed fuel was red. Runs great, and assumed it was farmer diesel but coolant was just above the low mark. Added a little and drove it home. Seems fine, but now im wondering if it has leaky cups.
At least those cups aren't like the 3116 where you have to use that stupid swedge tool. The one we had was dull and wouldn't swedge the cup over evenly. It kept stripping the forcing bolt. If I was lucky I'd get 2 cylinders out of one bolt.
10:38. HELLO. Reason IN this Case Coolant is getting past the one way is coolants getting to a higher pressure than the fuel due to.a weak fan clutch or a stuck thermostat. Coolants getting too hot.
That tool kit looks like the IH 7.3 cup tool kit(cutter and all included). I only used a few times....not for coolant issues...for burned bottom of cup from compression leaks. Never had a problem with the tap other than the guys wouldn't take care of the thing...typical shop tool neglect...always results in damaged and missing pieces. Did you have to buy that set for yourself? Take care of it and it'll last forever.
When I use a tap, I put grease on the tap. Not only does it lubricate the threads, it collects chips. Good job.
Wow that’s a really smart technique. Thanks for sharing.
I do the same. Works really good. A thick chassis lube is best.
good idea lord! .... monty python.
Cutting compound should be used when tapping and is grease like consistency
Good old fieldwork is funnier to watch than shopwork. Keep it up and the videos comming.
That shop lost a asset lol screw them and their hammers

As far as the plastic Ford intake ductwork goes, i use a heat gun to gently warm them up and make them more pliable. Works to take apart and reinstall
