  • I let my cruiser rest and hopped on my skiff for the best sailing session so far this year! I took Marina back to Rat Island and we had a blast sailing the GIS. Perfect day for a dinghy self steering demonstration.
Met some of the usual's at the Island and THE giant of the estuary, the varino O Boa Viagem. Sailing alongside this giant is always impressive!

      Hi Jonathan!
I use a windslayer, which is just a cool name for a piece of sponge around the camera! 😁
      It works wonders.
Also if you still get too much wind noise you can always cut the lower audio frequencies while editing. 😉

The boat handling looks excellent and great sailing with such a simple rig. I 'd like to see other angle shots of the boat, such as abeam or astern.

As a competitive sailor in Etchells class it has been a while since I looked at other boat and said: "It beautiful I would not mind to have it and sail it"
Very nice, well balanced, great to look at, wood!, easy to handle (you can not lift or park ethels on the beach). 👍

    • @TheBoatRambler
      @TheBoatRambler  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi John, the GIS has 10sqm of sail which I can only use up to 9-10kts sustained.
But with a reef, since the center of effort on the sail comes lower, it can handle a lot more and not loose much speed at all.
Even with two reefs I managed to reach 16kts top speed : th-cam.com/video/4_CbrWSJb68/w-d-xo.html

My sensitivity to wind and boat was at it's highest when dinghy sailing as a kid. Still pretty good when I started sailing bigger boats. By the time I was a professional, sailing on yachts over 80 feet with enclosed wheelhouses my close intuitive contact with the vessel and the wind was much impaired.

The rudder it's a cassette style rudder, so you need to lift it up although it is held by an elastic band so if you hit something it swings back some so it wont break.
check out my latest 360 video, You can pan around and look at the rudder as I launch, and when I get to the island you can see it swing back has I drag it on the shallows. have fun!

I think I will build something similar with a canadian canoe as the base with an outrigger just like the boat In the movie moana.
With such a light craft the listing is the major limiting factor in your speed and you always have to be carefull about it.

    • @TheBoatRambler

      Hi Konrad!
that boom never left the workshop, the carbon boom is way more rigid which is exactly what you want, in particular with a loose footed sail.! A flexible boom would bend and make more depth on the sail during gusts which is the opposite of what is needed.😉

Hi teo thanks I love forager and her videos. Mum said I have to wear my life jacket but you don’t is that a grown up thing or is it another country rules thing? Do boats have laws on them like here in Australia in Portugal? From Gene

    • @TheBoatRambler
      @TheBoatRambler  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Gene!
Your mum is correct! You should wear your life jacket.
In Portugal we have to have them aboard but it’s not mandatory to wear them while sailing unless at night or in bad weather. Valid for dinghies or cruisers alike.
Most of the small vests used by racing dinghy sailors are not valid/approved as life vests here in Portugal, they are considered unsafe as you need to be conscious so you don’t end up face down and drown. Automatic vests are really not an option for dinghy sailing as they would inflate every time we capsize and the big ones are too cumbersome to wear!!!
The estuary here has sheltered and shallow waters, and I still wear my life jacket if sailing alone in rough weather.
      Stay safe! 😉

All right let me break it down for. I was interested in alternative sail Rig design. And I was interested Leahteen sails with that I discovered your channel. And like first video. And fresh. Now let me tell you I think you could make money documenting the Lost arts for sailing. And I did not mean to be rude to you! But you do not know everything about sailing. How does a Viking ship run. How does a Chinese junk run. Just to give examples. And it will be so many people and let you into their world. If you get my drift. And just to throw something at you . I challenge you to take your skiff up the Nile River. I bet you get some content then. How far can you go before you can't go no more. I'm just saying open your mind the possibilities are endless. I pretty much I lived on the water all my life. Everyday I Learn something new. PS! There is a false security in those twin kills. From experience! Because I had one. Sand will not let them go. Trying to get anywhere near a beach with those. Always ended with my kills stuck. And you will see this material again.

      Hey Nolan!
      Thanks for your feedback!
I want make content about things that I actually experience(d). I would love to sail a Viking boat but they are in short supply in Portugal! 😁
I would love to sail the Nile as far as possible or the Mississippi! But to do that I would need to have a fat bank account or a passive income which could allow me to go around for a year or so doing all those things! I have neither! For now....
As for the twin keels I really didn't have much choice as it was either that or a ocean capable retractable keel boat, maybe a Southerly 95 or a Southerly 100...but they are expensive and rare.
I haven't given up on crossing an Ocean, or sailing up rivers around Portugal/Europe.... but one step at a time!
      Cheers.

I’ll never understand dinghy sailors without life jackets. I know, make all the excuses you want, every drowned sailor made the same ones. Until their luck ran out.

      Hi guys!
You are right SAILING WITH A LIFEVEST IS SAFER!! And I do, if sailing alone in rough conditions.
In Portugal we are required to have them aboard (as I do) but it’s not mandatory to wear them while sailing unless at night or in bad weather. Valid for dinghies or cruisers alike.
Most of the small vests used by racing dinghy sailors are not valid/approved as life vests here, they are considered unsafe as you need to be conscious so you don’t end up face down and drown, same with manually inflatable vests. Automatic vests are really not an option for dinghy sailing!
I could find a million “excuses” like the boat is unsinkable, the water around here in most areas is less than 6ft deep, I have the vests aboard etc etc but the truth is…it’s a personal choice and within the law.
As for risk…some ppl ride bikes down a mountain, go surfing in shark infested waters, or just use scooters in traffic, our lives are nothing but a series of calculated decisions. Around here, wearing a vest is still a personal choice, I make mine every time I go out sailing.
      And thanks for caring guys!
      Cheers
      Teo

@@solomondees.4632 So what? One example. The coast guard has tens of thousands of examples of dead sailors with no life jacket. 70 years lucky, who cares? Does that make the families of the dead sailors feel any better for their losses? Seatbelts, lifejackets, motorcycle helmets, vaccinations, they’re there for a reason, to save lives, and millions of dollars of tax payer’s money that could be used for better things than saving morons with good luck and bad judgement.
