Ive had the pleasure of working for Swallow since before Matt took over from his dad, the bay raider 17 is one of my favourite designs to sail, second only to the storm petral. I've met Andrew Denman a few times on his trips over to visit and its good to see what a fine job he's made of the build. Congratulations In reference to a question i read in the coments, the beauty of the mizzen is that in a sudden squal you can sheet it in, the boat will weather cock to wind, drop the main and your good to go with a well balanced sail plan. No drama at all and quick to instigate You can also do a nice trick of sailing backward off a lee shore holding out the mizzen while steering
Thanks Bill, I haven't intentionally tried to go backwards...normally it's the tide. Thanks for watching and the comment and I can't wait for the next Bay Raider 17 to join us, which is currently being built by Andrew, cheers Paul
Greetings from Spain 🇪🇸. Thanks for sharing your adventures. Best dinghy cruising channel on TH-cam. Happy Sailing and always fair Winds. Cheers 🍺 Marcel
Thanks Marcel, we have another get together next weekend so that video will be out in a couple of weeks. Thanks for watching or as they say in your part of the world Muchas gracias por mirar desde la hermosa España, saludos Paul.
What a beautiful boat, I am all sorts of jealous. Only at the beginning of my sailing career, but love watching your adventures, they're great inspiration for the future! Many thanks from (sometimes) sunny London 🇬🇧, cheers, Dan
Great days Paul mucking about with mates and boats in that beautiful place in the world. Thanks for taking us along. Post script I don't know if you follow Chris and Sarah Anne down south he also puts out a great video fir blokes like us.
Hi Dave, yes I watch all Chris's work down in Tassie. Beautiful part of the world, I would love to sail there one day. Thanks for watching, cheers Paul
Stunning boat. I love the Bayraiders, kind of like a Drascombe Lugger but completely and utterly modernised so they're fast, safe, easy to sail and have some great features. I'll add Iguanas onto the list of dangerous animals/insects that Aus has, but i'm gonna need a new notepad to fit them all in!!!!
eh you sound like my sister who lives in England. Nasty things are out there but more people drown each year than get taken by sharks....but don't mention the jelly fish, they can be nasty. I love your backstory video theme music on the fiddle....what's the tune called? Thanks for watching again, cheers Paul
@@SailingKateLouise Hi Paul. Haha!! Yes us Brits have a morbid fear of anything that stings or bites you. The worse thing over here is a Wasp and even these are a poor relative to most of the ones you get elsewhere in the world. I guess it's one benefit of rubbish weather!!! I get all my music from Epidemic sound and the one on the channel video is called "Varyra" by Sandra Marteleur. Just ask if you want to know any more.
Thanks for another calming video. I noticed the built in step or MARLOU’s rudder and it reminded me of the steps on the rudder of my old Herreshoff 31. I don’t know why more boats don’t provide that convenience/safety feature. Being able to climb aboard from the water certainly outweighs any added drag.
Another excellent video thanks Paul. We are soon planning to return to the Central Coast with the possibility of a side trip to Port Hacking before we sail north to our eventual mooring in the Clarence.
@@SailingKateLouise unfortunately not. That would be great but we draw too much. 1.8m. And we still have a lot of refit work before our first decent sail up the coast.
Thanks Andrew....you have done a magnificent job, she looks beautiful. I hope the owner of the Bay Raider 17 you are currently building joins us for a sail as well then we will have 3, please pass on my email sailinlingkatelouise@gmail.com cheers Paul
@@denmanmarine777 Hey Andrew, hope to see your guys handywork this weekend up close (looks awesome) I'm sure our old girl, TryFlying, will be mighty jealous... but the old TrailerTri does like to hang out with the cool boats.
@@HCWYC Cheers Mark. I still have my Tri, and she's 33 years old this year and still going strong. Epoxy ply construction, when done properly, lasts a very long time.
Really like the Bay Raider series boats. Still trying to win lotto so I can afford one (sadly). The Welsford Navigator is my other choice, but hard to get second hand in Australia. My last yacht was a Bavaria 32, lovely easy to sail fixed keel boat. However, the cruising dingy offers so much adventure in Australia. There are many rivers to explore on the east coast, then Moreton Bay, Harvey Bay and then the Great Barrier Reef.
What was the fin looking arrangement on his rudder? It's a nice looking boat, always thought that, they look like a working boat type which is very appealing
Another great video. I own the Bayraider 20, they are beautiful boats. Maybe an idea for a video is to go over different rigging types and there benefits. It maybe a little controversial since everyone has there favorites. Also when you guys are planning a cruise before you know wind conditions, in general how far do you plan to go in one day?
Hi different rig options is a good idea. We tend to post a Raid about a month out for 1 or 2 nights. As we sail mainly in inland waterways, we normally pick a destination that will be out of the wind at night....so we always have a few options . Unlike in Europe where they tend to go up estauries to a town. Thanks for watching, cheers Paul
Paul , did you catch the new Bayraider 21 by Swallow ? I think that you dingy sailors would like it. Would you be able to test sail one and give a sailors review ? Paul in Canada
Hi Paul yes I've seen the 21 very nice. But I don't think there are any in Australia. I'm sure Andrew Denman who builds Bayraiders here would let me know if they get an order for one. Thanks again for watching, cheers Paul
Swallow yachts are based in Wales and the Bay Raider 17's designer is Matt Newland. They now make fibre glass versions and the newer Expedition 20 with a cabin. Cheers Paul
That boat with a trailer has to cost at least $30,000. I’d hate to ding it up like I have every boat I’ve built and the seagoing yachts I’ve owned. But I have them to use, not look at 😆
Well the mizzen traditionally balances the jib if you don't have the main up, so you can sail with 2 sails up instead of reefing. Also the lugsail with no boom was also traditionally how fishing boats were rigged, simple and quick to pull up the sail and no boom to knock you overboard. Thanks for watching, cheers Paul
Its a lovely boat that Chris has got, but I hope he at least re-ties the jib sheet at the clew, looks like its only a thumb knot. Now he has a boat, he will have to learn, at the very least, a bowline.....
Hi Ed, yes the Bay Raider has a centre board but also a sub floor with a chamber for water ballast , so the centre board case doesn't appear to be very high. Thanks for watching, cheers Paul
@SailingKateLouise yep picked it up after I watched again ,water ballast is a neat option ,is it self filling or pump in pump out system great stuff, goes to show you dont need big to have a good time ,cheers.
