    The speedrun of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has always been a fascinating one. Recently an exploit called Arbitrary Code Execution was made possible for humans to do in an actual run, officially lowering the world record by over seven minutes. While fast, this speedrun is incredibly complicated, making for a great speedrun to cover in Speedrun Explained.

    I think any% is any%. Anything goes. Really it just depends the community's arbitrary decision of what constitutes beating the game. I personally really like when the any% route was wrong warping to Ganon. I think it made it more enjoyable to watch. But ultimately, that's what other any% categories are here for. In Pokemon for example, any% Glitchless is the real deal. Nobody really cares about Pokemon Red/Blue any% cause you just quickly wrong warp to the credits. Maybe something similar will happen to OoT as well. Either way, this version of OoT any% is still super impressive on a technical level.

    • @Patrick_Archibald
      @Patrick_Archibald 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I disagree for the same reason that the Fallout speedrun community caps their FPS at 60, yes there is a faster way to beat the game but it can make the game less accessible for some people to run. Also, technically the fastest way to beat fallout 4 is using console commands to complete all quests which would basically make it the same as Pokémon red/blue and it’s kind of unnecessary imo to make a whole category for something like that

    • @leaffinite2001
      @leaffinite2001 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    • @Patrick_Archibald
      @Patrick_Archibald 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Leaf Finite you could do that but then you could make that argument for any thing that improves the time including console commands, mods, etc. IF a game’s community is gonna do something like that, I think they need to make new categories like “no limits any%” or something like that so any% can remain the main category and you’re not having like 15 word titles for the games main category lol

    • @freewilly1193
      @freewilly1193 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@leaffinite2001 I like your suggestion of any% glitchless. Not being huge in the speedrunning community, and mostly being a casual when it comes to real games, I still feel there is some room, but extreme glitches of this nature go too far for me as an observer to enjoy. I always felt you beat a game when you hit the end, but that includes like some end states or something. Maybe I'm trying too hard to change it to something it isn't, obviously for some reason wrong warps and credit warps are acceptable in many cases, but it defeats the purpose not to beat the boss, doesn't it?

    I think a better analogy would be you want to enter a world famous advanced secret hideout but you need the password. So as you go to people to learn the password, the people write a piece of it on your back. Once you've got the completed password, you go to the secret hideout official entrance but the guard asks you to turn around to read the password before letting you in. That's what happens normally but in the Speedrun, you already know the password so you write it on your chest (as your name). The guard checks certain areas through surveillance cameras to make sure nobody gets in. After making sure an area is secure, the guard moves on to monitoring a new area (memory manipulation), however, if the guard receives a tip about suspicious activity, he'll check right away. The objective is to get the guard's attention through the closest surveillance cameras through specific actions, then in the process, have them read the password off your chest immediately granting you access to the secret hideout.

    Pro tip for anyone trying to read those words that are on screen for a single frame: pause the video and press the comma and period keys. Respectively, those will rewind and fast forward the video by one frame at a time.
    Additionally, K will pause, J will rewind 10 seconds, L will fast forward 10 seconds, left and right arrows do the same but only 5 seconds, the numbers 1-9 bring you to the fist tenth of the video and so on, and the zero key restarts the video.

    I get baffled by people that complain that "any% is boring now". This category isn't meant for entertainment, it's just the fastest way to beat the game without restrictions. The destiny of this category is to get as destroyed as possible, no matter what glitch you use. If you want more content out of your speedrun there are always different categories out there to suit your needs (and if they don't exist yet, be the change you want in the community).
    Also as a Fallout and Zelda fan who recently found your channel and enjoyed the Fallout content this is a very pleasant surprise! Keep it up!

    I've seen the rock they use to trigger the memory exploit referred to as "Kid Rock" in explanations of ACE before. So basically, this route is about getting the game to ask "whatever happened to Kid Rock?"

    This is litterally the essence of speed running! More so with the old games it was all about manipulating the code as much as possible to get to the end screen as fast as possible!

    "Hey Everyone, my name's Tomatoanus also known as the scab you picked off your arm."
    To be fair - those complaining about this method probably can't pull it off. What easier way to not include and "lose your clout" then to just outright ban a method. Clearly the Speedrunning community is largely based on preference. If 99% of the runners "cant pull off the route" and some random runner can - they will do whatever it takes to hold their title. Sort of lame if you ask me but what do I know - I don't have a Twitch channel with 1200 kids donating to pay my bills.
    Cheers :)

    To me, stuff like ACE is the reason I enjoy watching speedruns. Speedruns are an excuse to push a game to it's technical limits and to push players to their skill limits.
    To make my point, I feel I should restate something I heard quite a while ago (I can't remember where I heard it though, maybe Neil deGrasse Tyson?): if you tell a bunch of engineers to "make roads safer," they won't get very far. If you instead tell them to "prevent a landing space shuttle from veering of the runway," they have a more clear goal and can actually progress. In this case, they put grooves in the road to keep wheels steady, which is now very common on highways. Speedruns are a very similar thing to me. If you tell some people to "find cool glitches in your favorite video game," they would get nowhere. But rephrased to "beat a video game as fast as possible," there is a much more cleanly defined goal which happens to overlap with another, more vague, goal.
    I honestly wouldn't be surprised is there are numerous people who see this sort of thing and get a much more deep interest into how these games work, leading them into other fields such as computer science and such. There is also a more raw entertainment value in seeing someone aim a slingshot to teleport to some credits, and knowing that is possible on real hardware.
    (btw I haven't really ever paid attention to Zelda speedruns, so take these statements with a grain of salt)

    I think ACE is totally legit for Any%, it fits all the criteria and is honestly an amazing feat.
    I definetly DON'T think it should be (or will be) the primary category however.
    Any% no ACE will almost certainly be the main category people run (for a litany of reasons) and is the category that can still be pushed much farther, and that's totally fine with me.

    1. How the holy FUCK does anyone figure out this exact sequence of actions to manipulate the game's memory?
    2. That is the worst metaphor I've ever experienced, and I am 100% here for it.

    Man, I’ve been searching for the reason why my father left us, ever since I was a small child. It finally makes sense. He left when I was only a year old but I only started questioning why when I was maybe 8yrs old, approximately. Hearing Tomatoanus admit that he was the reason his own father left him and his mother, well, that really shed some light on my own situation…
    Wait, what? No… No, no, noooo…
    He didn’t leave because of _ME!_
    He left because of Tomatoanus!!
    It literally had nothing to do with _ME,_ *obviously.* I mean, seriously… Didn’t you all just watch the exact same video I just watched?!
    _Why else would my dad leave us?_
    _Apparently, Tomatoanus_ was the sole reason for this, back in 1991. Which, by the way, just wanted to say, thanks man! I really needed that closure! Sorry our dads left us but we have no one else to blame besides oursel-errr-uhhh…
    _Just you…_
    _Juuuuust you…_
