In this SPEEDRUN EXPLAINED, we break down an Out of Bounds speedrun of Portal (the original, not Portal 2). This run is done by the world record holder, Can’t Even. This run includes glitches and skips, including wild movement with the Source engine, skipping the Relaxation Vault, going out-of-bounds, and some cheeky shenanigans with the cake room and companion cube… This video serves as an explanation of the strategies used by Can’t Even to beat Portal in just 5 minutes.

hey everyone! first, i just want to say thanks to tomatoanus for getting us involved in this video - it was super fun to work with him on and he was *very* accomodating of all our little nitpicks. now with that out of the way, here's a little bit more background on the technical side of this run.
almost every explanation in this video is entirely accurate. there were a few white lies we had to put in places to make it easier to explain (e.g. some of the FCPS explanation is a bit hand-wavey) but there's nothing really any more than that.
that said, a lot of the details are obviously elided. there are tricks in this run that it'd take several hours to explain in full (which of course isn't feasible for a video like this) - and bear in mind that any% is one of the conceptually *simpler* categories!
the only trick in this run which isn't currently well-understood by us technically-minded folk is actually the very first one: vault skip. we vaguely understand the conditions for getting it, and runners are pretty good at it nowadays, but the technical details behind the skip still aren't entirely clear. a few of us (in particular UncraftedName) are working on tearing apart the game code based on what we do know to figure out the details, but it's a pretty weird one.
if you're interested in keeping up with the run, or have any questions about it, join the portal speedrunning discord at discord.gg/gQ285vS! if you have questions on the technical details of certain tricks or anything, please do ask in the #reverse-engineering channel - it's honestly quite rewarding to explain the hell that is this game to other people, so don't be scared to ask us about it. (be warned you might get about 3 times more info than you expect)
thanks again to tomatoanus for making this video! i hope y'all found it interesting :D

    • @mlugg5499
      @mlugg5499 ปีที่แล้ว +15

@@bluelemon243 superwarps are a new form of FCPS abuse discovered after that video came out. The basic idea is as follows.
Imagine you have save glitch, and don't have collision with a wall. That means you're able to stand inside it. Then, move your portal onto the outside of that wall, a bit below you. This makes it so that you suddenly _do_ have collision with the wall you're standing inside. Because you're stuck and in a portal environment, FCPS is triggered by VPhysicsShadowUpdate, trying to free you from the wall. The indecisive push vector is the difference between your bbox origins. Initially, your bboxes are perfectly synced, meaning this vector is 0, so you don't move, and FCPS fails - that means it teleports you 10% of the distance to your save glitch portal, which is below you. Now, like the FCPS video talks about, only your qphys (red) box teleports, while your vphys (yellow) one stays where it is for a bit; this means when FCPS is next run, the indecisive push vector is upwards, so FCPS pushes you on top of the wall. Do this a couple of times to scale the different parts of the wall, and you have the 10 superwarp, taking you from floor level to the top of the whole map!

i really appreciate that you always make sure there's some section of the run where you've already explained everything so there's nothing interesting to bring up, and you take a chunk to just like. talk about mental health? i don't think i am struggling in that regard? but every time i hear one of those sections it just... brings a smile to my face. i love that.

    Yeah, fucking SHOW OFF!
That was the best thing I've seen. You've earned the right to show off. When I saw the initial setup of the Companion Cube in the Cake Room, I audibly let out a "Oh fuck off. That was awesome". I'm 44 and my voice cracked right on the word "fuck" from happiness. I was legitimately blown away.
TA: thanks for the vid, and CE: thanks for the run.

As someone who's spent the last decade accepting that Portal speedruns will just be incomprehensible to me, I was really excited and incredulous to see this vid pop up in my subscription feed. And I was really into it and following all the excellent explanations for the first 25 minutes; then the actual run started and I was instantly lost and confused again. But in a good way. Kudos for your rapid-fire acronym delivery and somehow conforming a script to the absolute wizardry on display.

wow, i don’t know if you’ll see this but i was just listening to this vid while relaxing before bed. kinda just zoned out and when you started talking about how no feelings are permanent it kinda caught me off guard! but it was exactly what i needed to hear lately and really did mean a lot to me. i’m getting better but i’m still afraid of falling back into depression, sometimes it really helps to have someone remind you that it’s ok to have a bad day, it’s okay to not be okay, everything will soon come to pass and there’s always better days ahead. so thank you mr. anus, keep making great content and being you! you just earned a new supporter❤

Finally I was able to (almost) understand the speedruns.
Also, the narration of the speedrun was on another level even including a positive speech.
I mean, the explanations themselves were borderline understandable for me (if I was to try the techniques myself along it would probably be easier) but then the speedrun kicked in with narration at FULL SPEED and my brain just froze.
But thanks to this I had at least some idea of what was going on
