About to knock your socks off….in 2012 my ALT was 1411 and my AST was 2011. Diagnosed with Autoimmune Hepatitis with stage 3-4 liver cirrhosis. Today my ALT is 15 and AST is 28 off of all steroids and only on Imuran the last four years. My doctor said no alcohol but otherwise lifestyle changes would not make a difference. Don’t ever let someone tell you lifestyle changes won’t make a difference. Started intermittent fasting, keto and exercising. I’m going to prove them wrong!
I too have AH. Never did go on any drugs. I immediately cut carbs, gluten, and any processed foods. It took me about 4 months to get my ALT and AST numbers down to normal. That was 4 years ago and I'm still in the normal range. I now follow the carnivore eating plan. Good luck!
That gives me hope. My goal is to manage without any medication but my doctor tells me that is impossible. At some point I’ll have to decide if I dare trust my own instincts.
@@Happyat50 my Drs said the same thing. One even told me if I didn't take the drugs I would die. To go drug-free you have to be very committed to eating right. Check out Amy Meyers's book Autoimmune Solution. I followed that book religiously for 6 months when first diagnosed. My motto is eating a very restricted diet is hard, being sick is hard, pick your hard.
@@wendylee813 thank you for the information. I will look into Amy Meyrs book. I have read the Autoimmune Protocol which sounds similar. Yes, choosing your hard is certainly correct! Best wishes to you!
I had a chronically elevated ALT level for years. Doctor did some imaging and said it was fatty liver. When I changed my diet to Keto then Carnivore they returned to normal in a short period of time. I've been eating this way going on five years now and my ALT (tested annually) has remained normal. A lot of other things normalized as well.
My ALT was 583 six weeks ago. Lowered it to 89 with no alcohol, low carb diet - mostly meat, some fruit and veg. No simple carbs or added sugars. Lost 22 lbs. Liver isn't happy yet, but this is working.
Great job man, I love to see people take care of themselves. Mine was 101, a month later and it's 71, I hope to get it into normal. Going to see a liver doctor.
@@cr3292 I'm not a doctor but I'd say it's just slightly elevated. I think it's supposed to be below 50. A little bit of weight loss would probably bring it right back down. This enzyme is an indication that your liver is fatty and weight loss tends to lower ALT and AST. I find it easy to lose weight with low to no sugar and low carbohydrates. More meat and vegetables basically.
@@cr3292 its a bit high, you should fast and do keto. lose some weight and youll be good. Lots of people have fatty liver disease because the american diet is carb loaded trash.
I had NAFLD and my ALT was in the 100’s. Since going carnivore, my ALT has dropped down to normal range. I’m so grateful for the information you share, Dr Berry. Thank you!
So your Alt was 100 and you had NAFLD? With No hepatitis?? That’s relives since, My Alt is 120 and AST is 41, I thought I have a fatty liver, however, my Dr suspected hepatitis C since the number is 120. He said fatty liver don’t increase the number that height. I am waiting for the test results but I am scared to death.
@@manasdas9461 yeh, I just got the results no hepatitis but still Alt 108. Thank you for asking, I got scared because my dr insisted that fatty live don’t increase the level that high, she said most probably is hepatitis C. I am on diet regiment now
My GP just assumed I was a drinker when I had a high ALT and needed to cut down despite me telling her I drank very little. 3 months later and my ALT was considerably higher and the GP started insisting that I seriously needed to listen to her advice to cut my drinking, to which I could then say I had drank zero. Nothing. Nada. Not one alcoholic drink in that time. No meds, nothing. Had ultrasound scans and shown to have a really healthy looking liver with no NAFLD. Eventually worked out I’d been living (and really suffering) with Lyme Disease for over 20 years from a tick bite. High liver enzymes is something many other sufferers have seen. My suffering had been greatly reduced by adopting as close as possible to the a carnivore diet which has helped the pain, fatigue, cognitive and sleep problems as well as the usual zero carb benefits like my 50kg fat loss. It has also helped get and keep my ALT back down in the healthy range according to my monthly blood tests. These are done as I’m currently treating the Lyme with Disulfiram which in itself can cause high liver enzymes so have been keeping a very close eye on these figures. Love your vids Dr B!
@@kasiatokarz7230yes carnivore is meat and animal products only. Mostly beef, butter, eggs if people can tolerate them. Eliminating plants, carbs, sugar, processed foods and eating the cleanest food for people has turned so many people’s lives around. It changed mine and my families. Cured so many major problems for us. Eat good fatty meat - fat is not causing heart disease and meat is awesome for us. They are all lying, but people are figuring out how to help ourselves and each other. The cereal and food companies are lying, the doctors have no clue. Hope this helps. Dr Berry is awesome. Watch great doctors and scientists on TH-cam. It is all out there and it works.
Hi Dr. Berry! 1 month ago, my Hemoglobin A1C came back 8.9. I was in shock, but did some research and that led me to your channel. When I found your channel, I was already 3weeks into a medically supervised weight loss program, very low calories low fat and tons of veggies and was very weak and miserable. But after finding you, I switched to Ketovore. (Mostly fatty meats and eggs, minimal fruit and veggies). 1week after starting your diet, I pulled out an older blood test order that Dr. Gave me before, and went to get another blood test. My A1C dropped from the previous 8.9 to 7.3 (work in progress) fasting glucose dropped from 173 to 94, but cholesterol levels changed (some raised and some dropped). Total Cholesterol from 188 to 211, HDL from 54 to 66, Triglycerides from 176 to 140, LDL Choc Calc (NIH) from 104 to 120. Also I don’t have the previous number but my non HDL cholesterol is 145 in red zone. (Since I found your channel, I stopped taking statins is this why? )Also, ALT raised from previous 24 to 35 and is now in red zone. (I am a migraine sufferer of 45+ years and I am 50 years old) The change in these numbers happened in about 1-3 weeks. Am I headed to the right direction? I am going to see my doctor in a few days to compare these numbers, but I have no idea if my doctor have the same knowledge that you have so I wanted to get some idea on what is happening here. Also, I placed a check mark where it said insulin, because my doctor’s order didn’t have that, and my insulin level came back 7.0 (normal) previous is unknown.
I had my ALT checked every two months for nearly a decade while taking methotrexate - because there was a risk of liver damage. I’m thankful my liver was not damaged during this time. Carnivore has eliminated my need for it. I feel better than I did while taking it. My ALT is currently 14.
For some people strenuous exercise like lifting weights can cause elevated ALT and AST. This happened to me. Mine were high (AST 46 in a 0-40 range and ALT of 72 in a 0-44 range). I researched it and found clinical studies that showed this to be one cause. I mentioned it to my doctor and she ignored it. She had me tested again after not drinking anything for 2 weeks with the same results and then had me take the hepatitis tests which were negative. The next time I had blood work done I made sure to not lift for 2 weeks prior to the blood being taken and my results were right in the middle of the normal range (AST 24 and ALT 25).
My son is on keto for epilepsy. His alt was originally 46 and I started giving him ground beef everyday day and his alt went to 97. We eliminated beef and did chicken and turkey instead and his alt is now 26
Another thing that can elevate ALT, as well as AST, is intense weight training. My ALT was several points elevated. My doctor was a little concerned. So, he had me come back a month later to get rechecked. I stopped all resistance weight training one week prior and my ALT was normal. Intense weight training can also cause high CPK and CK levels as well. My CPK was very high, and my doctor had an echocardiogram ordered. Everything came back normal except for mild MVP. I was surprised at the doctor because he supposedly specialised in Sports Medicine, and I would think he would know that.
I totally agree with you..because recently I tested my blood and my alt found high i.e 114 but I have never drink any alcohol in my entire life nor have the other problems except I'm a daily gym goer and do intense workout..this time I'm planning to off from the gym for a week and rechecked my blood.. I hope it may be normal.
I’m very healthy, don’t drink, or do anabolics however I train like an animal everyday. Came back at 101. I was concerned but you’re correct, I believe it’s related to weight training.
I think it is definitely worth mentioning that the goal posts for a "normal range" has moved to the right considerably over the last few decades due to our ever-increasing DECLINE in health due to the astronomical increase in metabolic syndrome. These so-called "normal values" are based upon statistical distributions. Another well-known authority on this topic is Dr Robert Lustig. He was explaining in one of his lectures that when he was in medical school in the late 70's, anything over 25 was considered high.... given that information, I would be alarmed if my score was in the 40s!....... I voluntarily did an ALT lab test, and was relieved that my score was very safe, even when graded upon the much stricter values from decades ago. You want a low score!!
2018 I was hospitalized for “anorexia nervosa”… My doctor nearly held me down and locked me into a hospital bed because I had dropped over 100 pounds, really closer to 150. According to my doctor, my ALT was “slightly” elevated. It really wasn’t so bad, only 1473! And she didn’t believe I was starving. I wanted to eat! My biggest complaint was I was scrawny, ugly, and weak. Except my friend told me, I didn’t recognize the jaundice. But I would eat (a dandelion leaf was a full meal) and my belly would swell so badly I had to unbutton my skirt, wear suspenders, and a maternity top. The fool is now out of practice, and I escaped the hospital, which might be the only reason I lived. They tried hard to kill me, trying to make me eat corn and milk. My current doctor has properly diagnosed anorexia due to a known medical condition (the liver failure) and we have a yearly chat about how I need to eat fruit, and vegetables, and grains. I remind him I live in America, and everything is contaminated with corn, to which I am allergic, that tomatoes are a fruit, and so are cucumbers and that I source my meat from the woods and my fish from the lake. He shrugs, and goes on to discuss what I feed my grand babies, because he doesn’t know anyone else that makes butter sauce for pork rinds. But he will haul me in the minute my ALT is over 37. He’s not stupid. No doctor should be. They pay too much for medical school, so I don’t think they should need nutrition advice from a cook. Do not bother with a vegan diet. ESPECIALLY if you are overweight to start. For me, it started the weight loss, and it was great. I lost fifty, then seventy-five pounds. At 100 pounds lost, my liver had gone from unable to process all the toxins stored in my fat to shutting down. At that point, it was a death spiral. On top of it all, I couldn’t even stand to cook a meal. Eventually, I was living on gelatin. I made it by the gallon, and I ate a gallon every day. I made licorice gelatin, and coffee gelatin, and milk thistle gelatin… whatever sounded good that day. I don’t recommend a gelatin diet, but I was too exhausted to make bone broth… and my mind could hardly move beyond wondering what day it was. Take care of your liver, and don’t let your doctor get away with brushing you off. You are paying for the time, the time for your doctor to explain your test results. You’re free to refuse treatment, but don’t let the doctor shove aside your health.
Had blood test done last month. My ALT is 21, my wife is 22. I am Hispanic and she is Caucasian. We were both on a Keto for past seven years, I understand that the normal ALT level has been raised from 25 to 40 by the AMA because so many people today have a fatty liver.
You also missed high intensity work out also elevates your levels…. My doctor thought I was an alcoholic but the moment I stopped working out for my lab test everything went back to normal.
My enzymes also alk phos were off the wall until I stopped my statins! My gi doc tested me for all the hepatitis viruses and I was negative. I had fatty liver and T2DM . Now all my numbers are normal after getting off statins and my a1c is 5.2 on carnivore ! Thank you a million!
my number both around 50's too. but I did not look at the new blood test. I am afraid of it. my doctor did not call me. I will ask for a copy next week. Hopefully alot lower than 50 for better health.
I took the drugs Metronidazole and Cipro together, and by day 5 my ALT went from 22 to 273!!! It eventually dropped but is still hanging in the 70's. Really hoping going carnivore will help heal my liver and the rest of my body from the damage these drugs did. PSA- don't take either one of these if you can absolutely help it. Good health everyone, thanks Dr. Berry, you bring sanity to these subjects.
Hello! Look for a supplement called (tudca )from vitacost ! This will bring your levels down very quickly and protect your liver from damage ! There are other brands if you can’t find this one but this one is pretty trusted brand !
Oh my gosh my ALT has been elevated for over 35 years. No doctor has had any concern about it at all. Geesh! Thank God for Dr Berry and all the knowledge he is sharing! I’m looking forward to my blood work getting better and better. (When I was in my late teens/early twenties I did drink too much, but not in over 35 years). But I do have hypo thyroid and NAFLD per my current (wonderful) doctor. Slow but sure we are working on me getting more healthy and out of the Metabolic sickness. THANK YOU DR BERRY for everything you do! This knowledge is changing my life! 😁
10 to 15 years ago when my ALT began to creep up, two different doctors basically said "Meh... you probably just have a little bit of fat in your liver. nothing to worry about". Thankfully I educated myself and took care of it.
@@vietnam891 I am a medical professional that used to care for newborn infants with high bilirubin. We helped clear the bilirubin with UV lights (bili lights) and push lots of water. That works well. You could do the same by sitting out in the sunshine for 15 minutes a day, and also push water. Bilirubin makes you feel bad, as it leaves your body you will feel better.
@@onyinyenwokolo7124 I dramatically reduced my intake of sugar, refined carbohydrates, and alcohol. Also, I rarely eat breakfast. The improvements came gradually though. I think my ALT went from 60 to 20 over 5 years.
Thank you for sharing this. My labs showed my ALT at 47. Another time my AST was elevated. I had none of those things that you listed but my labs last week showed my ALT back down to the normal range. I'll keep a watch on it.
For anybody wondering why theirs is high: If you're on diclofenac, that might be potentially why. I was taking diclofenac with tylenol due to knee injury. My results AST and ALT were under 48 in April. I had knee injury, so my PCP put me on diclofenac sod 75mg 2x daily for 40 days. My AST is 159 and ALT is 423. You should consult your doctor about it.
@@xshaide this is happening to my spouse, his doctor is being somewhat dismissive but you gotta do everything in your power to make sure they’re okay. I personally am pushing the doctor because this is not normal and I fear for my husband. I wish you guys luck on your journey 🫶
I'm so glad i found this video. Just got lab results, and my ALT is high, but the liver scan 5 months ago shows perfect liver. Im going to cut the Tylenol and retest before i make myself crazy.
@nomadiavan6560 it was completely normal after I retested and got my results back, thankfully! It was likely a result of the Tylenol and then Advil to deal with the pain from my sore throat, before eventually starting antibiotics. Lesson learned for me in the future to change my annual physical and blood work if I've been sick prior to the appointment ... Thanks for asking and checking in!

My ALT was 31 in February 2024 and my most recent test it was 60 July 2024. AST was also elevated. The only thing I’ve done differently was taking Crestor per my physician as my cholesterol was 279 in February. I have told him for the last several years I didn’t want to take a statin. I caved…but I won’t be taking them any longer.
I had high AST/ALT for a number of years. Had two different doctors check my liver with tests and ultrasonic exams and no fatty liver. I also have been on statins and probably drink more than I should. Started with a daily dose of Milk Thistle and all my AST/ALT are normal even taking statins. Told the doc that and he said that I must have changed my life style, because Milk Thistle would not make a difference. I have not changed anything other than taking Milk Thistle. All my tests are still normal, but I stopped taking statins since Ken's video on the JAMA exposing that statins don't really work. Need to get my blood work up and check ALT/AST again and see my cholesterol work up high again. Need to work on getting lower cholesterol now. I am looking at Keto for that.
Milk thistle definitely works. My father was literally dying 10+ years ago (he abused alcohol and pills for years) from a failing liver. He couldn't eat (dropped 45lbs in 2 months), sleep, had burps (he doesn't know how to fake burp), his nails were just starting to club and Terry nails, he was freezing cold, he wreaked of ammonia when I made him go on a walk- all signs of liver cirrhosis/failure. His insurance had lapsed so he hadn't went to the doctors, he was just going to let himself die. I googled for hours and found they prescribed milk thistle for liver problems in Germany. I ordered him a bottle of Now 300mg extra strength and made him start taking it...he started to feel a bit better. A month passed, his appetite slowly came back and his weight stabilized. At this time his insurance was there so I made him go to the hospital...we told them all his symptoms so they tested his liver and his scores were somewhat elevated, but "nowhere near liver failure. His numbers would be in the thousands!" The doctor told us. He continued taking milk thistle and recovering. From then on, over months it was a battle with his primary doctor to prove his liver was all messed up. The doctors thought he was crazy. Lol I remember they gave him these huge containers to pee in over the course of 3-4 days (I'm positive it was to test him for illegal drugs). Ran all sorts of tests. He told the doctor if he stops taking the thistle...he starts getting sick within a few days. The doc said she couldn't recommend he take it but also told him not to stop taking it if he felt better using it. He pushed for a biopsy but they wouldn't do it because his tests were okay. He eventually gave up and just continued to take milk thistle and eat healthy.

This test with the appropriate ranges might have saved my mother's life. Assuming of course the doctor had realized the high carb/grain diet recommended for all Americans was causing her fatty liver disease and ultimately the cancer that killed her.
HCV for over 50 years. Can't tolerate the drugs, taking naringin in hope it will help. My ALT was 33 in January, which is down, but the blood was taken while my body was still settling from a winter holiday that netted a daily 50 g of carb on a regular basis. Currently between Primary Care Providers (poor people in California don't often see actual Doctors) so I don't have a more recent set of numbers - that was part of why I bailed on that particular PCP - I couldn't get tests as often as I wanted and then had to wait weeks(and weeks) for the results. Haven't found a replacement, yet.Treating the thyroid (auto immune, high blood levels low uptake and lots of antibodies) and have successfully shut down the cycle, am now waiting on an antibody drop (had to explain this to the PCP who wanted to take me off the bovine desiccated thyroid as soon as the blood showed the drop of thyroid production. Like most MDs the PCP got annoyed that I refused the option. For that matter PCP and Endocrinologist were both peeved when I turned down EVERY Pharma option and went for something grass fed and organic without colorings and plasticizers,..
Well, I think I finally found out why my ALT is high. Been eating ibuprofen and acetemphanine like candy for the last month because my migraines have been so bad. It was 63. But all other tests were normal including my AST.
Thank you. I had elevated ALTs in May this year and am being retested soon. I'm going to stop using ibuprofen now, not worth it. I get inflammed sinuses and severe sinus headaches but it's not worth damaging my liver to get rid of a headache! I didn't realise heart disease was implicated. This was a good video, thanks.
I had the worst life style for over a decade with lots of alcohol and partying and not eating properly, lots of sweets and sugary stuff. But I always took care of my liver. And thankfully my ALT level is at 11.
How was your lifestyle looking after your liver? Came on here trying to understand my friends normal enzyme numbers he drinks 1litre of scotch per week and long time smoker
Thank you for this informative video. My ALT level is currently quite high which I’m frustrated about. I’m meeting my new Dr. in just 3 weeks and she’s an internist specializing in Integrative medicine which I’m excited about. We’ve had 2 phone appointments over the past year and her philosophy is that she sees herself as my health partner on my journey back to good health. I know that she will overhaul my diet so that I can reverse these elevated enzyme levels. I will discuss these possible factors with her. I feel that she will do more tests to determine the root cause behind this issue.
I just recently started a Carnivore Diet after playing around with the keto diet a bit ... My weight is starting to come off and i checked my blood pressure which i always had a problem with . My usualy BP is around 145/100 ... today i checked it and it was 117/74.... just wanted to let you know this .... :)
My son is 18 and his ALT is 100. They said mild fatty liver. Thyroid is fine. Can’t imagine it has anything to do with his heart. Negative for any hepatitis. He’s lost 31lbs unintentionally. Other than diet I can’t imagine what else it could be. They are sending him to a gastroenterologist.
No, if you find an isolated elevation of ALT, the first step is to retake the test in a month or less. Then if it´s rising or if it isn´t decreasing at an expected rate you investigate.
My ALT was 16 last year. Took a physical it’s two weeks ago and it’s 133. I’m pretty healthy .. don’t drink. Thinking it might have been the Covid meds I took in Sept. I read side effects are increased liver enzymes. Seeing Gastro on Monday,
I once had really high ALT i think it was around 200. I'm usually within (24) range. My Dr asked me was i drinking last night i said yes. He asked how much i said more than usual. He said to me "for lack of a better word you are allergic to alcohol. You can drink, but you can't binge drink" The presenter is correct. It was too much for me personally, which really wasn't that much, but was touch much for me. I have found that SAM-E works very well at keeping my ALT within range even after drinking.
My lab results were 75 UL. Normal is 0-47 UL. I am 21yrs old I don’t ever drink it’s very rare for me to. The last 2-3 years I stopped exercising regularly…I’ve lacked cardio and only do calisthenic workouts at home. I eat a lot of fast food and processed snacks. I hope I can figure this out and live a long life, seeing my results does not help my depression and anxiety.
Hi I'm also young 23 years old. I was told today my readings are at 83. I do not drink any alcohol maybe once every 5 to 6 months. I do eat quite a bit of high fat and processed food and I reckon that's why I'm having this issue. Did u manage to bring it down eventually? What was your reading if so?
@utilpiese6324 I went to a GP and they told me at this age they don't have much to do. They are practically not concerned as there's no immediate danger but told me to cut down on my weight
The month before I started keto and IF I had blood work drawn. My ALT was 51. 5 months after starting keto and IF it was 21. According to Dr. Rob Cywes it should be between 10-14 so I still have a bit of work to do but what a drastic improvement over something that I didn't even know was an issue.
My lifestyle is VERY liver friendly. I'm under 10% body fat and, by DEXA, have only 0.1 lbs of visceral fat. Yet my ALT is, sometimes, too high for my standards. I get it checked frequently due to my chronic illnesses. There are two other causes, not listed in this video. First: If you are a gym rat as I am, extreme weight training will raise ALT. If I hit it too hard right before a blood draw, I can expect elevated ALT. It happens all the time. I've learned to stay out of the gym for a couple days, if I'm going to have a CM Panel. The second cause, not listed, is chronic systemic inflammation. If I'm having a Rheumatologic Flare, I know to expect elevated ALT. The last flare that I had, was accompanied by Thyroid disturbances. My theory here is that the Thyroid isn't a cause as much as it's a correlation. In other words, during the time of a flare, the liver is suffering from inflammation at the same time as the Thyroide, as Hashimoto's Thyroiditis.
@@erinmariebaker712 No problem. I recently had an AST test come back at 189! My ALT was out of range, high too. This test was from bloodwork taken on a Monday. The previous Sunday, I raced a 2 hour motorcycle enduro race where I wiped out 5 times. My doctor called me a few days later and wanted me to stop my meds and retest two weeks later. I said "NO". I explaind what had happened and they were unaware of the phenomenon. Also, I'd been eating a lot of pressure cooked meet. I was adding MSG. Pressure cooking alone raises glutamate levels. As it turns out, glutinmate can upregulate the AST enzyme. Anyway, 2 weeks later and no physical exercise, my AST and ALT were both 22.
What about Auto Immune liver and other issues? I have had out of the ballpark ALT and was diagnosed with AIHep. I have been carnivore now for 80 days and have seen some improvements with some symptoms
Perfect timing for this video. A couple weeks ago I got my labs back with an elevated ALT. I have no idea why. I have been ketovore since February and got really stricked in April. Now BBBE for the month of June. All my SIBO symptoms are gone, and my neurologist is weaning me off my seizure and migraines medications. However, my ALT was elevated?!?
@@gabrielle-d1b Yes, I know that. I was just giving another reason why ALT gets elevated, which was her concern. She may have had it, we don't know.....
Can this be caused by dehydration ? I did my blood test early morning the day after a 10 hour trip and 2.5 hour flight, where I barely had anything to drink. My ALT was 4 points above the max normal.
I take a statin and I take ibuprofen every day. My doctor knows this because she prescribed both, but she refuses to acknowledge that ALT can be elevated by that. I just dropped 20 pounds, but she is lecturing me that I need to lose weight. I AM loosing weight. I can't snap my fingers and have all of the weight gone instantly. It takes time. It took me a month to lose 20.
I’ve lost over 50 pounds in the past couple years and I’m still on a statin. I don’t know why. I need to have a chat with him about that plus he’s already cut my blood pressure medicine in half but my blood pressure was also mildly elevated yesterday when I went in there.getting older is such a lovely experience ha ha ha. The old goes though much better than the alternative.😂😂
Everything’s not always about weight I’ve lost 50 pounds in the past couple years and all that helps a lot of things. It certainly hasn’t helped everything. Plus I’m still on a statin which is probably the most concerning thing to me right now since I’ve been reading more about them.
I really like your videos and have learned a lot from them. My ALT numbers are still in range......but. Being a senior citizen, I get bloodwork done every 3 months. My ALT for the 4 previous times ranged from 12 to 17, but this last test in September saw it jump from 15 to 34, which set off an alarm with me. I see my PCP to have bloodwork done in a couple of weeks, so I'll ask him about the Hypothyroidism. Since I had a heart attack in 2010 and having had 4 stents put in at that time, my cardiologist put me on statins (currently 40mg of atorvastatin). I'd REALLY love to be off of that and all of the other Big Pharma junk he has me on! Anyway.......I'll ask him about possible liver damage and see what he has to say. BTW......I've been on Keto for a few months, but have only become really serious about it for about 2 months when I FINALLY convinced my wife to join me on the journey. We are both feeling MUCH better overall, plus as a perk, we're both down in weight in the teens.......WOOHOO!

Sorry about your loss. I too had elevated AST and ALT but did not fall off the veg heavy keto diet. Enzyme levels dropped very quickly. I found the healing is slow in the beginning but accelerates once it reached the 30s. It seems like the liver starts functioning properly and it also learns to heal itself better. The key is to learn to cook so you can keep the meals interesting. My biggest issue now is pain from osteoarthritis. I wish I had started the keto diet in my thirties. Would have saved my knees :-(.
Despite drinking straight Bourbon, my ALT & AST Liver Enzymes are at the low end of the range :) I honestly believe that its from my very low Carb diet & high consumption of Meat & animal Fats ;)
In December 2021 my ALT was 18 and in February 2022 it was 87. All my doctor said was “your liver and kidney function[AST went from 12 to 78 also] are elevated, we will recheck in 3-4 months.” Still waiting for recheck. eFGR non AA was 107 (kidney function)
I had purchased lab tests at LabCorp on my own back in Sept when I started the PHD. I knew I had diabetes bc of my symptoms and because I drink alcohol 2-3 times a week. My ALT was/is 44. I just need to know if I can get my ALT to normal can I re-introduce alcohol once a week, or should I stop completely? Why is men's normal range different from females?
My ALT is 485… they did an MRI on me today. Prior scan showed either bile duct blockage or another organ enlarged pushing against my bile duct. I had my gallbladder removed 9 months ago. They said it was over flowing with stones… some may have gotten snide the bile duct … pray for me. I’m 53… just moved to Florida with my husband & youngest daughter… I ant to be healthy!!! I don’t drink, smoke etc…
I switched from keto to carnivore and was on carnivore about 35 days, and then gave bloodwork, by ALT went from 21 to 53, and now I'm a bit confused, because I'm hard to corelate it with any of those 7 causes.
What is a normal ALT (SHPT)? Is that the same as optimal? In USA, Under: 34 for females 45 for males But need to say what the units are, as different countries have different units, and need to be converted. (0.0166) •Don’t exercise strenuously with weights 2 weeks before testing, it can artificially raise ALT. Causes of elevated ALT: •A diet which increases NAFLD/NASH/ Metabolic Associated Disease •Daily Anti-inflammatory •Daily acetaminophen •Excess alcohol for you •Taking a statin drug causes 2x-3x higher •Prescription or other drugs which cause liver damage •Hypothyroidism, undiagnosed, poorly treated hypothyroidism, Hashimoto’s •Congestive Heart Failure •Diagnosed or undiagnosed Hepatitis A, B, or C •Choline deficiency (eggs are a good source, liver, meat too) Finding a good doctor… ?
Just got my labs. My ALT is 504 and AST 378. I’m in pain a lot but really bad if I eat sugar or carbs. He is ordering more labs and sonogram. I have been carnivore for 2 1/2 years with many improvements but those numbers just continue to go up. I have done 16 gallbladder cleanses which always help but if I don’t do strict carnivore I hurt but if I eat carnivore I hurt, especially steaks. Not as bad since doing the gallbladder flushes though. I have worked on bile flow also which I know was sluggish. I don’t drink at all but I do have hypothyroidism but am on meds for it. Not kidding, I’m a little scared….. I was really having wonderful results from the carnivore diet till the former doctor I had talked me into doing hormone replacement pellets for testosterone and he gave me a bump of estrogen and that sent me into a tailspin that has taken me over a year to recover from.
For those of us who are Medically Challenged, it would be nice if doctors would spell out the words so it's clear what ALT or whatever the other abbreviations are mean. Not necessarily that I would understand even then what it is but just having the FULL name is helpful. Yes, I know that is what God Made Google for but in the interest of time and considering you are posting certain of the letters anyway......but thanks for the valuable info. It helps alot!!!
I am 17 years old and my ALT is 160 U/L which quite strange I don't seem to have jaundice or doctor doesn't seem to find any reasonable cause for that my cholesterol is totally okay including my liver as well. What could be the exact reason for that?
I’m 19 and i had an ALT of 90 for some time, i had done several tests including genetic ones and imaging as well but still showed nothing. Last resort i had a liver biopsy and then again it showed nothing. I’m also perplexed by this especially because I’m not having any symptoms
I never drink at all. And I got results yesterday of ALT 43. AST 33 Doctor said mildly elevated liver enzymes. ALT was 38 and 35. at some point back in 2019 but I’ve lost over 50 pounds since then. AST the highest before was 30. Granted it’s just 33 now but they’re telling me elevated so that’s all I can hear. Also, they want me to do more bloodwork next week.😮. Any thoughts?
i am a fit 45 year old male i don't drink alcohol i don't take meds my alt is around 45 and i would like to ask if it is affected by exercise, because I work out three times with weights intensively. the other indicators of the liver are normal (γ-gt, ALP, bilirubin). Thanks a lot and congrats on the videos
The information you provide here is so helpful. I have been trying the carnivore diet for about 4 weeks; I am pleased with my progress and am looking forward to your future postings. I have provided your info to my PCP and she says she'll check out your content. Keep it up, Dr Berry
Hello doc hope all is well. I have been in carnivore diet 7 wks. Yesterday I hv blood test for work and my ALT is 65 and i think at kaiser permanente normal values is 63 or less. Why is this? I had levels checked last july and it was 49 and a year before that it was 40s as well. Can u help explain and maybe i can understand this better. My primary doc wants me to stop carnivore diet but since doin this, ive felt so much better and lost weight, and havnt had gout attacks as well. Overall this way of eating have made me feel better but im a little concerned with this ALT elevation. Thanks for your input
My son is 15, and we found that hos level is 171. Hoping we figure it out. Obviously I'm here cuz I decided to search on it, and yeah like they say, never Google your issues, your anxiety will sky rocket.
My ALT dropped from 53 U/L (April) to 44 U/L (Sept) after going on my keto diet and losing weight. I also take 81mg Aspirin which might account for the higher level of ALT. I am Type 2 which might account for the higher level as well.
My ALT has gone from 15 to 45 in the last 9 months and no one has said a single thing about it. The only reason they checked is because I complained of adema, sudden weight gain and shortness of breath (which I never had before, and CHF runs in my family). They put me on a low dose water pill and sent me on my way, and I felt like I was just being a baby about the way I've been feeling. Time for a second opinion. (Also, my AST also went from 15 to 53 in the last 9 months).
Just got my lab test today My ast is 170 ans my alt is 137 I dont drink i dont take medications. However i got a high fever days before Doctor said he couldn't figure out what elevated my enzymes and also my white blood cells are triggered Am i cooked? What could be the problem??
My ALT is at 48 and my triglycerine are down… my doctor said there is nothing to investigate but I am always tired. He says it is because of my Paxil 10mg I don’t drink, no drugs My grandma died from a liver cancer so..
My uncle died of NAFLD and my poor mom was beside herself when he died because she didn’t know how he developed it because he wasn’t a drinker. I now know how and why he died. He loved his candy and was clinically obese. I wish he knew what we know now so he could’ve helped himself. RIP
My ALT hit the ceiling 45-50 after 6 months of softdrinks with high fructose corn syrup. Quitting sweets and clean the liver with vitamin E tocotrienols brought the value down to 25.
I just had blood work done and my alt was 36. The normal range was listed as under 29. I'm worried! I fasted 12 hrs prior to my test but I did drink a couple of hard seltzers the night before my test and I went on a short 20 minute jog beforehand also. I later learned I should avoid alcohol for 24 hrs before a blood test. Do you think that affected my results?
Yes mine was elevated just a little elevated but my dr wasn’t concerned about that he was concerned bc mine went from 11 to 47 in one yr. Found out I have Fatty Liver
I’m a bit concerned as I’ve been Carnivore for almost a year. Lost 25 lbs, but didn’t have much to lose anyway. Got my bloodwork done two weeks ago and Dr was very concerned with my HIGH liver enzymes. I’m having an ultrasound and more bloodwork. Could this be fatty liver? I read that being Carni too long could have contributed to fatty liver?!?! Something is not right here.
I have a sgpt of 101 and 35 sgot in my first blood test then after a week i tried eating healthy and a lot of protein and less rice then lift weights (heavy) then i came back to the clinic and did a bloodtest again and my sgpt went up to 165 pls help me what did i do wrong? I need to pass my medical Ps i worked really hard at the gym in that span of one week before my 2nd test because i thought it would be better if i work harder and eat healthy
That is really awesomely amazing!! Thank you for sharing this.
Nice 👌
Fantastic! I love to hear when someone saves their own life. Congratulations! 🎉

Mine is 74 should I be concerned
Mine is at 74 is that bad ? It was 45 like three years ago but I gained weight

Thank you!
I am on keto and all values are much better except ALT :(
So your Alt was 100 and you had NAFLD? With No hepatitis?? That’s relives since, My Alt is 120 and AST is 41, I thought I have a fatty liver, however, my Dr suspected hepatitis C since the number is 120. @@manasdas9461Hello! How are you now ?
Wow! What a journey you’re on! Best to you.
Do you really mean carnioveore diet which is meat based?
I'm pretty sure there are some herbs that will help clear out the Lyme Disease.
Hi Dr.
I thought muscle wasting results in highe AST only...
This happened to me too after a weekend of strenuous exercise. Got tested again about a month later and numbers were completely normal.
great information David
@@pramuanchutham7355 yes, that's what seemed to be indicated on the information I read too, AST.
Was just about to say the same thing.

Benedryl is hard on the liver. Some people eat it daily for allergies, sleep aid...
What????
@@lindacouncil1353 Yeah. I continue to have trust issues with the medical people to this day.
Had blood test done last month. My ALT is 21, my wife is 22. I am Hispanic and she is Caucasian. We were both on a Keto for past seven years, I understand that the normal ALT level has been raised from 25 to 40 by the AMA because so many people today have a fatty liver.
What would you do if your alt was 24
That is a DUMB reason to raise the baseline. That insures more people will be seriously ill. The AMA is idiotic.

How high of a dose did you take ? Milk thistle?
Keep me in prayers my alt was 133 and I’m very worried. I have a follow up on January 4th and I always feel very tired. Vitamin d was low as well. I suffer from severe anxiety and agoraphobia and panic attacks. It has took over my life

This test with the appropriate ranges might have saved my mother's life. Assuming of course the doctor had realized the high carb/grain diet recommended for all Americans was causing her fatty liver disease and ultimately the cancer that killed her.

Thanks for sharing this information, Dr Berry.
Same with me. Horrible shoulder pain. Better off drinking I think to numb the pain than daily Tylenol or aleve
Would taking a bunch of supplements affect the liver?
I did what you said. I lost 30 lbs in 3 months. Retested, all is well. First keto now carnivoir ! Thank you so much!
I totally need this today!! Thank you!
Doe she take insurance ? How were you able to find her?

Seeing Gastro on Monday,
Mine was flagged as too low last blood test I had. Wonder what that's all about!
Thanks much Dr. so helpful, nice to hear from a doctor who is medical practice
How are you now?
Hi I'm also young 23 years old. I was told today my readings are at 83. I do not drink any alcohol maybe once every 5 to 6 months. I do eat quite a bit of high fat and processed food and I reckon that's why I'm having this issue.
Did u manage to bring it down eventually? What was your reading if so?

The month before I started keto and IF I had blood work drawn. My ALT was 51. 5 months after starting keto and IF it was 21. According to Dr. Rob Cywes it should be between 10-14 so I still have a bit of work to do but what a drastic improvement over something that I didn't even know was an issue.
What does rob cywes recommend for lowering alt levels to 10-14 range? Does he have a book or TH-cam video on the topic?
Thank you so much for such an informative video, Dr Berry.
Thanks for sharing this info!!
Yep my wife got her celiac diagnosis due to elevated ALT

What about Auto Immune liver and other issues? I have had out of the ballpark ALT and was diagnosed with AIHep. I have been carnivore now for 80 days and have seen some improvements with some symptoms
Perfect timing for this video. A couple weeks ago I got my labs back with an elevated ALT. I have no idea why. I have been ketovore since February and got really stricked in April.
Sorry, I think I said the same thing partially to you. I’m not thinking clearly because I have health anxiety ugh
We are both feeling MUCH better overall, plus as a perk, we're both down in weight in the teens.......WOOHOO!
thank you. I've had a major thyroid problem and now know why my AST/ALT are so high. I was told I needed a compounded progesterone for my major thyroid symptoms including inner shaking.

Despite drinking straight Bourbon, my ALT & AST Liver Enzymes are at the low end of the range :)
I honestly believe that its from my very low Carb diet & high consumption of Meat & animal Fats ;)
