Garmin Connect's Big App Revamp: What's Actually Changed?

  • Here's your full walk-through of the new Garmin Connect Mobile app revamp, changing up the user interface.
    Earlier this week Garmin announced the beginnings of a revamp of the Garmin Connect Mobile app - something that many people have been eager for…for many many years.As part of this revamp, they’ve also opened it up to public beta, so you can poke at it yourself, and provide feedback on what still needs some love. While Garmin started that public beta access part on January 8th, there isn’t the option to manually join it, rather, Garmin is slowly rolling out access to join the beta. Thus, I figured I’d give a walk-through of what things look like today, until your toggle gets lit up. Speaking of which, in case you somehow dismiss the beta invite in the app, the Beta App toggle is otherwise in the app under: More - Settings - Beta Program - On/Off (you can leave/join as much as you want, once your account has been activated).

      This new update is so bad that I've stuck my Garmin in the drawer today and I've dug out the Apple Watch Ultra again. The changes are absolutely hideous removes most of the functionality and information and just makes it look more child like it's almost like someone from Windows8 came across their team and decided to make it look like Windows 8 it's absolutely hideous and they deserve to get flamed for this. I've deleted my account and will not be back.

    I really like Garmin's philosophy of not charging users for the privilege of using their product after they have bought it, unlike others... But if to create an amazing app like I am told other devices have they want to charge users, I would rather use the basic app, which covers the vast majority of my use case.

Past weekend spent significant time trying to get the 5.0 update to pre-5.0 ease-of-use with same metrics. To no avail. Fortunately on Android so will not have to use 5.0 in the current incarnation unless forced to do so.

    For what it's worth on the subscribed watchers stat - I usually watch your videos while on lunch at work from my laptop, and I can't sign in to the browser there (IT security frowns on the use of personal accounts).

    Hi Ray, I have a video idea I think would be interesting to cover: garmin coach vs suggested workout (with a set race date) which one adapts better and brings you to the desired outcome? My hypothesis is that Garmin coach relies on older algorithms and doesn't make use of everything the modern HW and SW can provide. Would love to hear your take on this

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

      Yeah, I'd be near 100% certain that Daily Suggested Workouts will do a far better job.

    • @CaptainBrash
      @CaptainBrash 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I haven't used Garmin coach but I've used the suggested workouts with a race scheduled and it's incredibly boring. only got about 4-5 runs it goes through, the sprints are way too easy, just feels like a moderate interval session rather than a sprint.
      I guess they can't wreck you but you should feel done after an sprint session.
      It's just very safe and boring.

    • @Paulien1878
      @Paulien1878 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      To add a different perspective: I started out with garmin coach and have completed several. Since about half a year I'm following DSW. Garmin coach was great because it gave prompts on technique, and some of the coaches gave drills. While DSW only gives you paces, times and number of repeats in different combinations. I'm also curious how people who don't want to run daily use DSW. As a self taught amateur runner, I find it more difficult to make time for strength training with DSW giving me a run every day (excl rest days). On the other hand, DSW is great for the flexibility to cater any race distance at any point in the future, for which GC is much more restrictive.
      Just to say, there might be enough to cover in a video ;)

    • @pdurys
      @pdurys 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Dcrainmaker If Garmin listen more carefully what you say than us "ordinary" users, you could ask them as well, why we cannot have DSW visible at least on the Phone.

      Garmin Coach is more engaging, at least until the novelty and suspension of disbelief that you have a real life coach wears off. Great overview. Thanks for this. Look forward to seeing it flow through to me. I noticed at 8:10 a summary of your HRV in top right....and even you dip into orange occasionally. I find mine dips into the orange (and red when I had covid recently) although generally it's a low green. But I figured your HRV, being a true fitness man, would be consistently solid green. Although I train hard (rowing 3-4 times week), I also have a few bad habits (occasional smoking at parties, drink too regularly) .... what do you think of HRV Status? Is ithelpful, or noise? I even went to the Doc's for an ECG a while back because it was tracking orange too much....but they said my heart was in good shape. Interested in your thoughts.

    This is great news. Although I haven’t yet got hands on, I’ve thought for a while that if Garmin sorted out their own app interface then they could compete with the likes of whoop. I’ve actually just cancelled renewal of my whoop subscription and will now use Garmin as my metric tracker. Although it’s not quite advanced as whoop’s, it’s 90% of the way there for what I use it for. Let’s be honest, unless whoop says you’re deep in the red you’re probably going to train anyway thereby negating many of the proposed benefits of having a whoop in the first place. Not sure on the tech comparison but Garmin basically already have what whoop have but just in a harder to access package. Plus wearing a watch and a whoop always kinda annoyed me. Watch only is a complete bonus. I see other people complaining that it’s just the same but looks different. Well yeah, that was all that was ever wrong with it in the first place. This is a good starting point for further development.

    The biggest problem with the connect is that if you do a ride without a power meter it hardly registers. I've done a 2h+ ride with power on a Saturday then done a tough gravel ride with no power but with a HR monitor for 6h+ on a Sunday and the Saturday ride shows as a harder ride where the Sunday ride looks like it was a waist of time with very little effort showing.

      @@elliotgowland8695 Gotchya. In re-reading your comment, I suspect you've fallen into one of the 'traps' of how virtually every training device/platform works today. In a nutshell, they reward high-intensity heart rate zone time more than lower-intensity time. So I suspect you're 2hr ride probably had some substantial peaks in it (HR intensity-wise). Whereas I suspect you're gravel ride, while tough, may not have had as many really high peaks. I see a similar problem with long-hiking quite often. I can go out and do a 5KM run right now, and at a brisk pace, do 200-250 units of load. Yet...I can go do a 14hr hike with 10,000ft of elevation, at a steady but pressed pace, and only end up with 150-200 units of load. Obviously, for the longer activity, my legs hurt more during/after, due to muscular fatigue. But virtually all training devices only measure aerobic fatigue. The singular exception, and really only for weight-lifting when you tag exactly which movements you're doing, is Whoop. Beyond that, it's all aerobic fatigue.
