Strava has just announced a slate of updates at their annual Camp Strava event, where they show off a bunch of newness. This years event is the first time new CEO, Michael Martin, is at the helm, after starting back January - and he appears very keen to say ‘there’s a new sheriff in town’. And I’ll give them credit, their little 82 second teaser video is hilariously well done - it’s simply their CEO sitting there, reading mean social media comments…and agreeing to them!
In total, there’s a slate of things coming, some more concrete - and some a bit more fuzzy. Here’s the quick-hit list, and then I’ll dive into the nuances a bit more down below:
- Adding new family plan for up to four family or friends in a group (except, the pricing is TBD)
- Adding mobile app ‘Dark Mode’
- Adding night heat maps to show which routes are better/safer for night workouts
- Adding new quick edit feature to edit workout details
- Adding new "Athlete Intelligence" feedback, akin to basic coaching feedback on activities
- Adding "AI-Enabled Leaderboard Integrity” to sniff out improbable uploads
All of these things are coming from what Strava says is a revamped development process within the company, with them specifically saying its using an "updated design system, an initiative that is integral in driving a heightened pace of product innovation at the company."
#Strava #StravaTips
But what i really need is “should be at work mode” which hides the time of my activities so i cannot get fired 🤣
If your boss is checking you out on Strava to make sure you are working, then you really need a new job 😉
I'm sure you've seen by now that this is actually one of the upcoming options: hiding the start time of activities via the new Quick Edit!
Like Ray said. Set the default to private then make them public if you want
@@CRcyclistWell, when I get an update because a colleague has completed a ride and I was trying to contact him through teams... Not ideal! So you should be able to put it in "private mode" and hide that.
I work at a cycling company and do not want colleagues in my Strava circle for that reason. If they introduce "specific hours" or "Hide activities for certain riders", then my network will grow by at least triple the size.
As a software engineer it's crazy that dark mode is a big feature. Some android phones can do this like 80% fine automatically when Strava hasn't even implemented it yet.
It’s been an OS level feature on iOS for 7 years maybe. Every other app supports it out of the box. Baffling omission, which is why people are so annoyed by the lack of progress.
I was thinking the same. Dark Mode should have been a change log line item six years ago.
@@gplama exactly
But.. Gotta also say that their API for devs is very good and they seem to never have bugs virtually. So high quality standards it would seem which costs more time obviously.
I love it for my phone. But have never used Strava as my bike computer. It’s surprisingly hilarious they never had for company who’s pay sub and free ad littered ap makes a lot of cash for them. It’s so popular as well.
Segments on the Apple Watch like Garmin has please!!! It’s all I want in life!
How about the ability to make a Segment out of a lap? It would be so much easier to create a segment that way instead of those tiny maps/pins🙏
Remember when Strava was only dark mode?
I would love vo2max calculations/algorithms. Am not sure about the fitness score ..
Wish they supported skipping, I only see that on Garmin
Cancelled strava when they trippled prices never looked back.
The level of innovation…
The feature to flag dubious activities is finally a thing?
I can't believe that they took so long to implement this feature.
I mean, they don't need AI to do the job for them, just get to know all of the world records (they're not that many and I know most of them from the top of my head) and flag any activity that does break them. This is so easy that I can't believe that it wasn't implemented before.
I've been preaching for this for so long, I'm tired of flagging activities of people that run or cycle faster than cars, wtf.
They should fix the route builder feature on the phone. Got so much worse since the last update in March. The proposed routes are useless, not matching the selected options, or simply, not finding any routes around me. Before I was always finding a new/nice rout to ride/run.
Strava needs to introduce a dot watchers style feature for segments so you can compare your segment speed to another riders
I hope, really hope, that we can have units per activity. I don't want my bike rides to be converted to km because that's my default units used for running & swimming.
Cycling is a metric sport. Freedom units do not apply.
@@MrScrofulous Thanks for your input. I'll be sure to ask you for advice on investments and life choices. 🤦
The strava developers are lucky they didn't get fired for accomplishing so little over so many years.
You know the devs aren’t the ones that actually setup expectations and plan out projects right.
Those poor devs are indeed lucky not to be laid off for cost cutting reasons and blame reasons even though the management was the reason why strava did absolutely nothing for several years
Firing the dev team would also count as ‘doing something’.
Sounds like a PM issue, not the devs
I use Strava as the perfect nightlight when I go to bed. My wife is already asleep and instead of turning on the light lest she kill me, I simply open Strava app which lights up the room to the perfect level for seeing yet doesn't awaken my wife!
Multisport activities yet?
Sadly not.
Ya, then after being a paid member for over 10yrs at $60 a year, they up it to the $80 a year. Maybe not for an old school user but new ones, no thanks...
Almost never use Strava anymore. It’s just a circle jerk for peacocking and kudos. For something with so much data, the route creation and consolidation is piss poor and has been for the past 5 years.
Hello from Redmond!
To the new CEO - can I help you where so many others fails... " This summer".. Which summer? Why not July or December? When you become a CEO do you forgot the world has a Northern and Southern half?
Use July 2024 etc.. Please. You have worldwide subscribers.
Greetings from autumn in South Africa. And yes we have You Tube and yes we can type English down here 🎉
I'm glad they thought of women's safety so that men can get the exact same features for the same purposes. But glad it's "for her". Also they need the ability to remove geo tagging on individual pics.
How about it removing the Strava Tax, and actually reporting the same mileage that our Garmin says.
Am I in a minority of one in not giving a damn about dark mode? I. Don't. Care.
It's nice they are finally doing something, but it is pretty underwhelming. I miss the days you could choose specific features you wanted to subscribe for, and only pay $2 a month 😅
I get strava, the social aspect, but, hey strava, here’s my data, can I pay you to store it. Thats the bit I never get.
Love that shirt!
Team Seattle! Was born there. Here's the shirt though: cottonbureau.com/p/23YT22/shirt/washington-the-evergreen-state#/6725448/tee-men-standard-tee-envy-tri-blend-s
@@Dcrainmaker That's awesome! I love it there! Honestly, Seattle sports is one of my biggest passions in life, aside from my wife!
I miss the free Atrava! Now Strava is expensive AF.
More price increases?!? LOL, Strava is eroding value of their platform by continual price increases, we'll see how thing continue to go.
Last year the increase was too much. Now? lol. Definitely no thanks.
@@LlenadeMalo Yeah, i'm on the fence. There are other services that do about 90% of what Strava does for $0....the only challenge is that Strava has become ubiquitous through all of it's many integrations, so there is a benefit there.
Great shirt!
of all the things i would like to see change on Strava, drk mode doesnt even get on the leaderboard! How about getting heat map info on my bike computer (Suunto is hopeless!) How about being able to search within someone who i follows activities like i can with my own? How about being able to post a youtube link in my ride that actually works for everyone! The list goes on...
lol dark mode. How’s about removing CRs with elevation that are faster than Usain Bolt’s WR as part of a 20k run 😂
Any sign of copy workout feature for thingsike yoga, weight training etc ?
Strava need to separate out MTB and Road cycling and give MTB back shorter segment creation. 500mtrs minimum requirement is unusable for a lot of MTB tracks.
I probably am the only person who doesn't use dark mode all the time. If there was only one mode available, I would choose light mode.
The people the CEO quoted as saying those things don't exist. I checked twitter and Reddit and no users by the names quoted are on there
Seem like nice updates.
Can I track my swimming PBs yet? WRT to "AI leaderboard cleanup" - hopefully they didn't train the AI off of Strava, because it'll get a skewed idea of what's plausible ;)
Netflix premium is $25.99 per month. There is no way I can justify paying $11.99 per month for Data from Strava. That's $143 a year. In two years you would have enough money to buy a Garmin forerunner 255 when it's on sale and that brings all the analytics most people will ever need. For me Strava is totally not worth it.
You got that right. The segments are cool, sure. But I rode before they were a thing…I will survive without them.
I'm confused - who is paying $12/month for Strava and calculating the cost as two years? It's $79/year under annual plan. I mean, sure, if you want to pay monthly then it's way more...
@@Dcrainmaker If you paid for 15 years you could have bought an iPhone, with Apple Health, and all other apps!!!!1!!! /s
Maybe you should exercise more and couch potato less
@@7gibbens Ask someone to read to you what I wrote and explain what it means.
Why use it, as opposed to Samsung Health? I am yet to have a Strava account.
I guess I don't understand why someone would want Dark Mode?
Just make the activity search more granular.
All sounds underwhelming. Strava routes is just cumbersome to use. The "friends" subscription option sounds like a crash and burn when it comes to putting it into reality.
Yeah, I find that Garmin's maps and routes are MUCH easier to use than those on Strava.
All I want is „year‘s best time“ badges. As someone who has been a subscriber for many years, the whole PR motivational tool is starting to fade because I have too many rides in segments and have lost fitness lately.
They even 3 month 6 month best times. We all get older it can be depressing seeing a pb that's out of reach because it was set 10 years ago
How does strava have so many employees and there’s like 2 features a year. Like others have said, let us hide activities like walks that nobody cares about…. And how is there not a way to auto select a different bike when you do indoor riding… the most basic things they never add. Good to see some of it coming
You can hide any activity quite easily.
Bikes can be added and one can be set as default, you can also differentiate an off road bike, indoor bike and road bike and when you upload it will auto select them. This is working now for me, you have to set it up via web not mobile.
@@davidgeorge9233 ooo thanks I guess the bike feature got added. As for hiding. I don’t want to manually hide them. I want boring walks to add to my stats but not bombard my friends timelines
Still no filtering or sorting of saved routes 🤷
I had no idea thart dark mode was so important to people. LOL. Light or dark doesn't make a difference to me... 🤷♂To me, Strava is just... there. It seems to me that the Strava "Subscription" is trying to charge for things that Garmin already gives me for free. Route planning, segments, training, leaderboards? It's already on Garmin. Strava doesn't offer anything that makes it unique or necessary for me to spend money on.
What is dark mode? Am I missing something? 😂
They need to make the privacy settings dependent on type of exercise.
I don’t want my gym sessions public and no one cares - enable us to just make gym or any other specific exercise automatically go private while say something like running can stay public
That would actually be pretty cool!
Agree, but ActivityFix gets close to this (able to mute stuff according to rules)
I agree. I do a lot of stuff that I don't want others to see to not fill their feed with activities that only matter to me.
I just have all activities on private mode and then I share only what I want to. Works for me.
@@michaeltheunissen609 yes please don't make it complicated...
Waiting patiently for... "We've added these features! Also... price increase."
The price was already crazy high. Higher? lol.
"Also, we're going to claw back 1 or 2 more features back behind the paywall"
That's what I was thinking. And hey you do not like it, find 3 more people willing to join the family plan so you can save. Smart or evil you pick.
I would REALLY love to see Strava have their own version of "Training Plans", where Strava can plan your workouts for you depending on your current workload, fatigue and fitness levels etc. and recommend a daily workout for you and added to daily workout planner. The workout should then be pushed and sync to local device to be used onto your preferred platform, like Suunto, Garmin or Yahoo for example. Perhaps something that is customizable depending what your goals are etc.
YES PLEASE, strava do this!!
Most watches will do that by the time Strava gets to it... (Garmin already does).
@@RealFrenchWill Sure - Garmin is there already... but not all 🙂
I hope you can turn some of the features off. I'm already sick of being told "this time two years ago you did this run". It's meaningless. Especially when it's a standard activity or a boring 1 mile walk.
or even worse in my case, reminding me that I was better two years ago because I had more time to ride
Friends privacy circle, so when friends meet up and ride from their house it also starts their start location, rather than having to remind people NOT to start and end their Garmin at your house. There, said it.
Kind of funny that the CEO calls Strava out on Dark Mode, which is nice and all that, but really - How long have people been asking for Strava to fix the Leaderboards. There is not one popular segment near me that doesn't have obvious problems. And not just with KOMs. That was one of the main reasons I dropped Strava. Well that and the inability to compare/race against age groups other than your actual age group. It became obvious when I turned 70 and pretty much had the fastest time on every segment for my age group, not because I am so fast but there just are not many over-70s on Strava. And just racing against all ages, that is only fun if you want to always lose. I doubt they will change that for me but if they really fix the leaderboards, I'll come back.
Yeah, for whatever reason the internet really rally's around Dark Mode. It's the most easily meme'able thing. That said, their press release actually led with the AI cheating/leaderboard thing.
5:15 - agree. I do the same for years already: All private by default. And after uploading photos, giving name, description, cutting the track if needed - i open it for everyone.
As an older rider, bring on Age. Group KOMs please
I love this!!! Or at least a pro and amateur k/qom leaderboard!!’
This already kind of exists. There are age leaderboards. But you don’t get a crown.
how about mimicking the same type of run/bike thats being imported from garmin? ie if its interval it should be shown as an interval and not just a single run.
I stopped Strava like 4 years ago. It was turning every single nice enjoyable ride into a competition, into a social network post. I stopped Strava because my values are not aligned with them, but it has improved my quality of ride. I ride for the ride, not for the upcoming post.
It *is* a bit frustrating to see KOMs on steep climbs at some incredible 60+ mph speed. 🤨😆
Now let us turn off the Weekly Snapshot please!
In the beginning of days Strava had only-dark-mode UI. But then some ignorant fools came and redesigned it.
Meh
To be fair i'm liking the recent changes strava did to their iOS app visually. It's getting there. I'd love strava to bump up their training analysis game to a level of Trainingpeaks or so so it's a one stop shop for all things sport related
They could start by using a 7 day window instead of telling me every Monday that "my activity level is lower than usual". Yeah DUH ....
@@irfuel lmao that’s too accurate
"They don't actually know what is going to cost yet". Big throwback to one of the greatest DCR videos ever about Strava not knowing their own prices. Ever. 😅
The account sharing also reminds me from what Netflix did and encouraged years ago. Let's hope it's not their tactic to lure people in and screw them the same way by not allowing sharing anymore somewhere in the future.
I canceled my Strava after DCR came out with his video last year on the bs cost increase.
@@dcfan40I got rid of premium or whatever it’s called when they raised the price super high. No thanks.
won't the bad guys look at the night heat map and exploit that pretty quick?
Dark mode? I don't care.
Night heat maps? Great news for predators!
What I want is to be able to turn off all the useless "best" stats.
I wish they would remove “estimated power” it’s so inaccurate it’s not worth it, I’ve done routes/cx races with and without a power meter, more or les the same time and hr trace, however the estimated power can be over 60% out, with the amount of data they have on me, I would have expected it to be closer.
Yeah, estimating power is very challenging when push comes to shove. Factors like gradient are easy, but things like wind (massive in power), directionality of wind, how trees/buildings affect wind, whether you're in a draft behind others or not, etc... make it surprisingly though.
They have a lot of data on you but Strava aren’t using that to build a model of how your power / HR relationship works, even that would be more accurate than whatever form of guessing they currently use.
@@Dcrainmaker yes, there are a lot of variables. I would never expert the number to always be close to accurate. But if you have 100+ rides logged with power, how can their estimate the occasional time you ride without power on a flat course with minimal wind still be as hugely wrong as it always seems to be for me?
How this took so long for them to acknowledge let alone implement is mind boggling.
I know you're just hoping to get in Mike's next video but you're too late so you can quit your whining already
@@geoffgoldplum1231 you ok bro?
@@geoffgoldplum1231 If you can take peoples money you sure as hell can take their criticism too. Now you stop whining.
And they still haven't fixed the apps broken Bluetooth device connection 😂😂😂
If the AI is anything like other Apps from Meta or Microsoft, this will absolutely destroy strava. And given Strava's history, they probably bought their AI from wish 😂
Trying to filter leaderboards is beyond any current AI model.
Also 4 friends is silly, just cut the price by 75% and let everyone sign up on their own. A big reason why people don't sign up for strava is the cost, given there's minimal special features to justify the cost.
Does it really take AI to calculate that when the activity name of the segment-topping time is “Driving Test”, and the “runner” was twice the speed of Usain Bolt, it should be removed? Doesn’t seem all that complicated to me, but what do I know?!
Still no kJ for energy burnt hey. "but but but that's not what's used in Ameeeeerrriiiicccaaaaaa 😭😭😭"
IMO free Strava account is best when you already pay for a Training Peaks account.
Wondering - but for real - why a dark mode has a top priority in an app like Strava. It's like saying, the most important part on my 5k bike is the color of the bottle...
You’ve clearly never spoken to any serious roadie 🤣
Yeah this has never really been something to bother me either. It's not like I'm looking at Strava during my ride or endlessly scrolling through Strava before bed.
It's an absolute nothing burger and I'm a bit frustrated that they are acting all high and mighty about it. Dropping it as a surprise update would've been nice but this is a bit cringe I'm not going to lie. There are a bunch of features I'd be more interested in and for Strava to elevate from a souped up riding journal to an actual training tool for me there's a long way to go. Golden cheetah and trainingpeaks all the way. Strava for the social aspect. Dark mode? Not even in the top 5 for me
@@xAudiolith It's become a meme I think
Also thanks for reminding me to step out of paid Strava. I just don't use their features other than staying in contact with ex-colleagues who sport
All I wanted was to add two or more shoes to a run!
I really wonder what tech stack they use for their mobile apps, as it's really straightforward to implement dark mode in a mobile app. It's not as if Strava has 100000 screens that they need to check.
Dark mode.. Stupid AI.. Oh my god.. They have so much data and do... Dark mode.. Resign.
They should buy wandrer or do something similar, I love the ability to find roads I‘ve never ridden.
Wow. I might actually come back to Strava. Nice to see a new CEO actually care about what the users want
thank you great overview, in comparison to Zwift .... I"m waiting for you to give Zwift a kick in the behind for their outrageous price increase: video title 'how to alienate your subscriber base'. keep punching dc.
I don’t know how Strava hasn’t added in a feature to show people with power meters only on leaderboards
Or just mark them as unverified
Or maybe even better: show little power and/or heart symbols when there are power and/or heart rate data in the corresponding activity.
@@froesche5 my point is, give the option to only show people who use power meters on the leaderboards to eliminate more of the cheaters so you don’t have to keep manually flagging e-bikes or cars all the time. Sure it wouldn’t rid all of the cheaters but it’ll make a decent dent.
Because not everyone can afford or wants a power meter?
@@andydt82 yeah hence add the OPTION if you want to exclude those without a power meter on the leaderboard. Just like you can exclude by weight, year, etc when you view a segment
Strava’s new trick for price increase > Straight up-play for sympathy
Love your shirt. I’m a native Washingtonian. 🌲🌲🌲
Me too! Born in Seattle!
BRUH WHERE IS MULTISPORT?!
We're getting Strava Dark Mode before GTA VI. Wow.
Really wish I wouldn’t have to tag my commute. It would be nice that after tagging the exact same route like 3 times as a commute it would just list it as a commute from that point on.
Use ActivityFix, it's free. You can create custom rules and auto update your activities based on those rules. I automatically tag mine as a commute when I use any garmin profile that contains "Commute" in the name. It also automatically assigns which shoes/bike based on what ANT+ sensors are available from the activity.
Strava: we know we took our time implementing dark mode.
Fitbit: hold my beer.
What does Dark Mode do for you?
Strava still has a problem informing thier customers what they'll be paying.
You say in 4:42 that we'll be able to hide "start time"?
This is a much requested feature nowadays but it's not available. Does this mean they are implementing it?
That’s their quote from the press release, so I’d assume so. Waiting for them to upload the full keynote.
Spend $10,000 on a road/mountain bike. Complain about $11.99 a month to get data and UI that took 100's of millions to develop.
night stalker, I mean heat map mode sounds like it could backfire like flybys
Dark mode! Wow, finally Strava has arrived in modern times. So much campaigning went into this
I wish they'd make live segments free for cycling. They are free for running, so why not cycling?
Next week subs increase 😂
it definitely looks like a useless AI chatbot of some sort
Strava needs to have the ability to detect e-bikes when it comes to top times in segments, both overall and by Age Group
Awesome they’ll finally sort the KOM’s out! So many „finished the ride in my car” KOM’s out there it takes the edge off some of the fun. Also I’d say HR should be mandatory in order to even be allowed to compete!
1. Sort shoes alphabetically on mobile.
2. Use stopwatch time on non-GPS (mill, trainer, pool). Now, it calculates like race mode (at least with myPolar).
3. Allow advertising for races to local athletes. I’d rather give my $ here than to Zuck. Easier, I think, to target than Meta.
Strava makes you slower.
I still can't believe strava doesn't provide turn by turn navigation on routes. I now use RideWithGPS exclusively and sync my rides to Strava for the social interaction. RWG displays configurable metrics (HR, speed) etc with the map overview so you can see both with is so much nicer, and has so many other nice features that Strava should have had years ago. Damn shame they let Strava go to waste.
