      Many compressors have a duty cycle. The cheap one you toasted probably has a two minute on five minute off duty cycle. If this is followed the plastic piston last longer. I'd be curious to what the instructions on that compressor say. It would definitely take much much longer to fill a tire but in a pinch or lack of funds it is better than a bicycle pump!!!

      Powertanks new Monster Valc 3 does not require you to tap the hole. You can also carfully drill a larger hole in a regular valv.

      Every time I see a compressor test I hope to see the Viair dual 400 go up against the ARB dual, but nobody seems to know it exists. It's about $300 so almost half the cost of the ARB, and has higher volume than the ARB -ie airs up tires faster. The only drawback is it's rated 33% duty cycle vs the 100% ARB (note Viair does offer it as 100% as well with a reduced volume). HOWEVER - I've used mine to air up 10 tires back-to-back (playing in the dunes with friends who didn't have compressors) without overheating and most people report they've never hit the thermal cut-out. The 33% is EXTREMELY conservative and I've never come close to hitting the thermal cut-off doing one truck/4 tires. I've also 'raced' mine against identical trucks with the same size tires and yes, it's faster if only a bit. But again - half the price!
      I can only guess people don't use it in the comparisons because it requires you to mount it yourself instead of coming with pre-fab bolt in no-drill kits like the ARB? But come on - we're wheelers here. I thought only mall-crawlers needed pre-fab bolt ons?

    Thank you for another great episode! An important thing to remember when comparing price is that a Power Tank is sold as a complete system with a hose, brackets, and tire inflator while most compressors sell those items separately for an added price. Also included in the price of a Power Tank is a limited lifetime warranty and excellent customer service. No other portable air system gives you that. There are folks out wheeling with Power Tanks that are 20+ years old and have outlasted the vehicles they were originally mounted to!

      Arb has given me excellent customer service on my dual arb. A phone call has always gotten me replacement parts or an rma with a prepaid way ill from Canada to send it in for repairs. My compressor is now 8 years old and with a phone call and telling them my sn arb shipped me a complete motor assembly after asking if I prefred them to ship the part or rma the entire winch. To say that compressor manufacturers don't have good customer service is really not fair and is a bit of a low blow coming from a manufacturer. You are quite fair to mention the added cost of brackets, hoses, and chucks though.

  • @gpfdrizit
    @gpfdrizit 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Consider adding a small tank to your dual arb. I run mine with 37s that I usually drop to 4psi I kick the compressor on while I'm getting my hoses out and have a full tank ready when I start filling. Then while you are switching wheels your compressor is still doing work and speeding up your fill even faster.

    • @gpfdrizit
      @gpfdrizit 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a setup I've really been considering, however I don't think the valve is slowing down the compressor. The reason I say this is I run a small 1L tank with my dual arb. By the time I finish a tire I have time to put the valve cap back on and move to the next tire and take its cap off and the tank is still not quite finished refilling. This is with standard valves.

I just picked up a dual Air Zenith dual OB2 compressor kit that will be going on my 2020 Silverado 2500HD for air horns and tire inflation and whatever else lol. Each OB2 compressor is basically two of the 480C's. This should be a beast of an onboard air system.

  • @jim6682

    The engine should be running while operating the compressor. The loss of voltage makes the compressor run much hotter not to mention wearing down your battery.

      Also for the cheaper air compressors most of them work better if you start it up before hooking it up to your tire. I don't exactly know why but in the past I've blown fuses in these cheap compressors because of not starting it then hooking it up.

    I have the big portable compressor from harbor freight, which was about $60 i think. had it for about 5 years. first use, we just ran it till it overheated and had to wait for it to cool off....took forever. after that i set out to improve it's cooling. I added a small heat sync from an old computer to the top of the cylinder and actually modified it so that it draws air through the motor to help cool it. after that it aired up 2 trucks with 31's before overheating. but then I knew it was gonna take forever to cool down and air up my truck with 33's, and I had a genius idea to take a wet rag and cool it off faster. it was so hot the rag was sizzling when i touched it! but that did the trick and ever since I always use a wet rag to help cool it off, plus it gives you something to do while waiting for it to air up.
    my old truck had 33's, my new truck has 32's and it takes about 20 min to air up from 12-15psi to 35psi. with my slick water cooled trick I have run it continuously for over an hour doing 3 trucks when I was the only one with a compressor! maybe i need some better prepared friends. lol

    Really awesome comparison Ben. All my buddies have the Smittybuilt portable and they would get so hot and take so long. I invested in a powertank and I love it. It's quiet and takes like 30 seconds or so to fill up my 33s. It's expensive, but I believe in their product and I expect it to last a long while. You have to swap the tank every few trips, but to me it's worth the speed and the sound. You also have the ability to move it and use it outside the Jeep, run tools, and even re-seat beads. (obviously I don't need to be considered for the giveaway)

    I really like the idea of the dual ARB. The power tank is fast but comes with some extra hassle and a hard mounted air compressor is always there, doesn't need refills or much checking and takes up less space and you always have it. You're not gonna take it out when driving around town day to day and hit a nail and wish you had it. And cheaper in the long run because free air. Maybe if you're airing up and down constantly and those few minutes are super important the power tank would be worth it?

      @donhappel9928 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      True - I think a lot of others don't publish specs because they aren't that good. While the ARB dual is good, it's twice the cost of the Viair dual and still puts out less volume.
      Another important detail that was overlooked is any compressor puts out less volume as the pressure goes up. So if you're running an E rated tire at 50 psi on the road (like one of my rigs) you're going to need A LOT more compressor, even if it's a fairly small tire.

    Number one thing to look for in any air compressor is "CFM" rating. Whats the CFM of these compressors? I run a $149.00 Smittybuilt. It gets hot but still working and I pump my tires back up to 40psi for the long drive home at 80mph. I flyby them Jeeps!

    If you like off roading and/or have an ATV or UTV, I suggest looking at the "Viair 300P SxS". I just got mine and it's perfect for me.

    I've got an 87 YJ and a 14 JKU both on 35's. Bought the Smittybilt portable compressor and it works great for when there's a line at the filling station coming off the beach. The only off roading I do 😁

    Your Jeeps all look so good. I noticed that a lot of Jeeps have to wait in line at AOAA trail park to add air to the tires on the exit parking lot. Having a portable air unit would be a good idea for my JKU Willys.

    I have a larger Viair that I use, but also bring along a cheapo unit as well as the one built into my jump box only for anyone with stockers that needs to air up, but didn’t bring a compressor. Good timing on this video as I have been looking to upgrade to a singe or dual ARB. Running 37’s and no issues with the Viair, but looking for some faster fill up options so I’m free to help some of the other members of the group.

    I’ve had a portable one for years. It’s rated to pump up a 300 psi trailer tire. I’ve filled a trailer tire up to 225 and it didn’t go any higher. It is slow but only cost me like 60 bucks over ten years ago so I’ve gotten my money back. Still works today:)

    Hi there, great subject. For the CO2 tank how often would you need to refill it if you’re airing up 40’s?
    Don’t stop doing what you do for us. It’s great to see real people doing what we do. Cheers,

    How many tires of a particular size will a tank that size inflate before needing a refill?

  • @SMfkngC

    Another good use for the power tank and the large air valve is if you roll the tyre off the bead and are able to half re-seat the bead you have enough flow to pop the tyre back on in most cases

  • @JasonWh

    Check out the MoorFlat kit to level pressure on all tires at once with the digital gauge. It's built like a TANK. Clip on vale adapters, etc. So worth the money, especially with honking tires of that size. You can also air down all 4 tires at once to the exact size you want within minutes.

    I'm running 35's on my Tacoma and 37's on my Jeep. The "too low for driving on the street " line reminded me that I need to mess with the pressure on the Jeep to see what rides better.
    A video on different pressures for different setups and scenarios would be low cost and a good time to reveal the winner. 🤷🏿‍♂️

    Hey Ben, I ended up running the ARB Dual Compressor on my JKU. I also have a 10lb Power Tank as a back-up, which allows for running air tools, and it can be switched from my Jeep to my truck when needed. Works for me. Thanks to you and Cassie for the videos.

Just like your wife's page, her welding gussets on her axles..etc, some channels are to concerned about sponsors more commercialized and having someone or shops do the installs. Thank you for helping us through installs. Keepem coming

    I have a viair 88p for my tacoma. works great, about 90 seconds airing up my 32's from my usual trail ride pressure (20psi) to my typical highway pressure of 29... any more and the tacoma tends to get a bit bouncy on highway/road transitions/bumps... I did a test from 0psi to 29psi under 4 minutes.

    My Jeep TJ didn't come with A/C and I like it that way. Now the York compressor seems like it could be a good fit for me. Anyone here have experience with that?

    • @vgullotta
      @vgullotta 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are lots of write-ups online on the how to do the york setups. They are pricey to do, but SUPER powerful. Will definitely air up your tires faster than any of the compressors tested, but expensive. My JK came with A/C but I've never turned it on. I never have doors on when it's nice, so the A/C is kinda useless to me, I don't even know if it works lol

      Jeremy Rhodes I’m running a York and kept my A/C. It was not all that expensive. I bought the bracket and belt kit from quadratic and the compressor on Facebook from a dude. All in was about $400

      Vinny G I would say screw the AC, but it’s so freaking hot here I need it, when it’s 118 degrees you need AC I just wonder if there’s a way to do it without removing your AC

    • @donhappel9928
      @donhappel9928 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vgullotta 100% agree with Vinny - the York option is going to blow away (sorry, couldn't help myself) any 12v compressor except maybe the super high-end stuff like Oasis or the Outback Extreme Magnum. And keep in mind those things need a huge amount of power and can pull a battery flat even with the engine idling if used too long. (been there, done that)

    I run 35's on my TJ , 37's on the JLUR and 37's also on the JTR .. and we use the twin ARB .. kind of have the same fleet as you .. like the channel.. love the videos 👍

  • @Venom-kq5xz
    @Venom-kq5xz 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wow! I’ve been pushing my portable, but that could be a bad thing to have on the trail. Need the twin arb. That aired up so fast. I know I watched a sunset go too complete darkness waiting on my tires to air up once, and I’m always down to help out my group I’m with.
    This is definitely a video many have thoughts on just because depending on how much you wheel may be the reason you go for one over the other, and then there are air lockers you can hook up also.
    Awesome video!

    Another pro for the Power Tank is that it get's ice cold when in use instead of insanely hot like the air compressors. I have owned a Power Tank and the Dual ARB and if forced to pick one it would be the Dual ARB. I have used it on tires as big as 38's and right now I use it on 33's and 34's on the Toyota's. I usually take my 34's from 12 PSI up to 34 PSI and it takes around 1:45 to air up one tire.

    I use a VIAIR 450PA, works great and I built a hose to fill 4 tires, or deflate 4 tires, at one time. From 15 psi to 30 psi takes just a few minutes. I never timed it, but it is a great compressor that has been around a while. It has 100% duty cycle and uses battery clamps so it is portable. At the time it was about $100-$150 cheaper than the ARB. It has an automatic shut off when the hose hits 150 psi, and it also will shut down if the temperature gets too hot. VIAIR is a very good compressor.

    I've always been curious if the dual ARB using the power tank monster valve would improve air up times? Would the ARB allow more CFM to flow if it didn't need as much PSI to shove the air through a smaller valve.

    • @JKGearandGadgets
      @JKGearandGadgets  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not much. The dual setup only puts out around 6cfm. The valve core doesn’t limit it that much compared to the 40cfm that the powertank puts out

    Out on the trail maybe? But after 'Tyre Extinguishers' have hit, all 4 will be down to 0, so thanks for the video. 11 minutes seems a hell of a long time all the same!

    I’m currently running ARBd to a 2g tank to run zips and a branch style system to air up. Have been thinking of running power tank, I am however curious how those monster valves effect the balance of your tires. You running balance beads or weights? Maybe that could be an upcoming video for you. The Great Debate! Weights vs Beads! Again, great video guys!

    Just bought myself the larger Smittybilt portable compressor. Haven’t had the chance to use it yet because of obvious reasons lol but I’m on 35s plan to jump to 37s or 38s. I feel like it’ll perform well for the price. Dual ARB will happen one day. When my electric lockers are toast ad I go to air lockers most likely.
