In this Video I restored an old Tap Holder!
I purchased this Tap Holder online to give it a nice restoration. It didnt work properly, since the chucks of the Tap Holder were pretty rusty and stuck.
So I disassembled it in every part and started the restoration. Goal of this restoration was a nice Satin Shine finish on the metal parts and to let some signs of history on the wooden parts.
After hours of filing, sanding and finishing i gave every metal part a nice nickel plating. The wooden parts were finished with some linseed oil. I made some small parts offcam, for example some pins, springs and a wooden block for closing the end of the handle.
When the restoration of this old Tap Holder was done, it worked perfectly fine again.
You might can see some small parts with a little bit of rust on it - dont worry, this rust is a result of the cold bluing and will disappear by adding some grease.
    I hope you like it!
I hope you have fun with the video! If you have any questions on the used tools, materials or the processes, write it in the comment section - i´ll try to answer as soon as possible!

Nice work. I remember as a child watching a grandfather take items apart at his unfinished basement workbench. He placed multiple layers of old bath towels on the floor beneath the vise. I asked if the towels were there to protect falling items from damage. He said, no, they were there to prevent grandma from yelling at him when items made noise when hitting the concrete floor. I like this memory.

I found a ratchetting tap holder in that style years ago in a garage sale and after a cleanup got it working again and for tapping holes in confined boat engine-rooms nothing comes close. Have driven M20 taps with it without too much drama.
Beautiful job on this one. The Bluing and Nickel
Plating contrast is so so good.

these tools are also used by boatbuilders for drilling holes in places difficult to access, like in between frames down near the keelson. they were also used by electricians for drilling holes through joists in loft spaces. obviously, they use jennings pattern wood - drilling bits, or similar types. here endeth the lesson ! lol

My grandfather, who was a mechanical engineer and did a lot of his own machining, had one of those. He got it in the 1920s and passed it on to my father who was also an engineer. I have no idea what happened to it. It was probably made in the US a hundred or so years ago.

I very much enjoyed watching, I love to see very old & vintage tools restored.. On the clamping pieces, I think they should have just been tossed and mill up two more, they looked to me to be to far gone to work very well, unless it's just going to be a display piece and not going to be used.. Thank you for sharing.. Merry Christmas to you..
