In this video I restored an old Pipe Threader "Virax 62", Made in France.
Age:
I guess it´s age to 50-60 years.
Restoring time:
around 2 weeks
Facts:
Focus was on an "antique finish". The main body still has it#s production marks, the zinc die cast ring has some imperfections, and the handle as well. Hope you like it!
this is one of the older versions, you can recognize them by 2 knobs
I wasn´t able to do a final test, because I couldn´t find any affordable, original cutting heads. Sorry! But i demonstrate how it works :-)
restoration was about 2 weeks
Techniques/materials:
Ring and knobs are made of non magnetic zinc die cast - I remade the knobs out of 7075 aircraft aluminum
the Ring was left with some imperfections (especially the countersinks), because i didnt want to break this fragile, unique part.
The main body was blued with hydrogen peroxide (3%), salt and white vinegar. By cooking in demineralized water, the metal turns black. You can repeat this process up to 10 times
the bolts were cleaned, because they need to fit back into the main body, same for the ratcheting element (ring)
the new countersunk screws were nickel plated
you can cold blue zinc die cast with regular steel bluing agent

ok I am TOTALLY GEEKING OUT over yur high pressure parts washer!! My jaw dropped. I was like "I want one and I don't even do restorations!!" (I am not getting one. Hubby would never let me so I will continue to geek out over yours). Woah! this blacking method is SUPER COOL. Would you judge the "correct amount of grease" the same way I've seen many wood workers judge wood glue? If you don't get a little "squeeze out" once you put it together, you probably didn't use enough?
It strikes me when I watch your vids how much of an art restoration is as much as it is a science. Your knowledge about not only current tools and methods, but those of the times whatever your restoring was made in shows in everything you do. I continue to watch not only because it's calming and cool to dee what you do, but because I learn so much. thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much Naiya! Yeah the pressure washer rocks - i clean mostly everything in it: dishes, my bike, the dog, and so on. Jokes aside - its really pretty cool :-)
In my opinion theres never enough grease, nor enough brake cleaner. In the end of the video while testing you can see grease pop out between the ring and the main body - while changing the ratcheting direction. I guess thats the answer..:-D

It was indeed a great restoration. I like that cold blued surface of metal than painted ones.
Btw in Pakistan you can still find cutting heads for such threaders.

I was skeptical of the antique finish, but the result is outstanding.
Looks really nice. I preferer when doing an as close to original you can restoration, depending on how much you need to make new. Love how the zinc plate came out.

I could've used the younger cousin to that recently when rebuilding a hand-truck, but my largest crescent-wrench was just big enough to do the job. (threading the axle-stubs that originally had push-lock retaining washers)

I would call that leftover grease "PLAQUE" like when you've had too many sausage biscuits your whole life and now you are getting roto-rooted by your cardiac surgeon. Another beautiful restoration!

“Tool Cheese” - In watchmaking, the brownish crud of oils, dirt, & skin that builds up around lugs, casebacks, and bracelets is called “Arm Cheese”, so “Tool cheese” seems appropriate.
Also, if we were in Canada with Hand Tool Rescue, he might call it “vintage Nutella” 😂

Eine gute Restauration, mit so einem Gerät habe ich früher auch gearbeitet. Heute wird es kaum noch benutzt. Die Rohre werden mit Pressfittings aneinander gefügt und dann mit einer Akkupresszange verpresst.
