    In this video I restored an very old Charcoal Iron from Russia. My friend Sergei sent it to me for restoration, спасибо большое сергей! The charcoal iron was abandoned and in a bad condition. It was super rusty, all parts had play and the handle wasn´t original. Time to do a restoration on this old rusty iron! I started by removing the non original parts. After disassembling i sandblasted all the rusty parts, steel wooled them, cold blued them and gave them an oil bath fur curing. I made a new wooden handle and some new hollow tip rivets and hollow tip shafts for reassembling. The final test shows - the iron works very well and is a pretty cool piece.

    Дружище, мне очень понравилось то, что ты не стал восстанавливать этот утюг до состояния современного утюга (шлифовать, полировать весь корпус и так далее). Ты сделал новый утюг по критериям 1934 года. Эта работа действительно высокого уровня! 👏Браво! One of the things I personally enjoy about restoration videos is metal work on the lathe, making all the rivets and so on. I loved this video but it would have been so great to see all the work that went into the rivets, nails etc. It is immensely satisfying to see those things turned on a lathe. 😊

      Hey man, that’s pretty crazy! I hope my iron was close to the museum piece 🙂

    • @lnlnd
      @lnlnd 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@misterpatina The museum piece is there mainly to make the atmosphere of the pre WWII everyday life, plus to show people what was used then, just like the other stuff there, so it's a bit rusty and dusty. It's obvious that it wasn't used for a long time, yours is closer to how they were brand new but a lot cleaner and nice-looking than it has ever been :) I guess you can say it's a museum quality if you want to imagine what it was like to have it new.
      There are two ways I see on the internet: some people restore things and make them as pretty as they've never ever been before even brand new, some are trying to make vintage looking things from brand new ones, trying to make them look as if they were heavily used. No one is making rusty things restored, so they function at their best but then vintage them a bit, so they don't look brand new, instead they look like they were used in the everyday life for some time but weren't forgotten, were taken care of. They have some obvious signs of continuous and recent (!) usage but no signs of rust and crumble as if they weren't used for a long time. I don't know how to explain this idea better :)

    Lovely job on this antique iron. My great grandmother had something similar to that she used back in the early 1930s. Back when electricity wasn't readily available in the countryside of the southern US.

    I love your work. I only wish I had the time and tools to do some of the more advanced restores that you do. I only have one recommendation for improvement. Unless it's really something complicated, the sandblasting seems to eat up a lot of time that could be spent doing all the cool things you do! I also love your sense of humor.

    Just a note from the lady side. That's a "swing iron". You put the coals in and swing the iron back and forth to make the coals glow hot. As long as you have coals, you don't have to "reheat" the iron. That's the reason for the "dents" at the face of the iron, so that the plate heats up faster.
