    I've never fooled around with car locks. Maybe it's time to start. Thanks for the great video Jason. Very informative.

    Try when your putting the springs back without tweezers, take a small pick and slide it in the spring hold it on the side and slide the spring in the hole.

    I just purchased a 2007 Chevy Silverado Classic. It would often take a minute or two of jiggling the key to get it to turn. So I pulled the cylinder today and found that the side bar was not dropping properly. I sprayed it with WD-40 toi clean it a bit then with silicon lube to try to get the side bar working smoothly, but no luck. Finally I took the unit to my bench grinder and filed down the side bar. Now any key works.
    I purchased a kit with a new uncoded cylinder and a set of new tumblers. Now I know how to read the key code and set the tumblers in the new cylinder. With the key code I can ask the lock smith to cut a new key that isn't worn out too.
    My one question is where to get those fancy pliers? I couldn't find anything on them.

    You know what's funny about this? When you do a pre-delivery inspection, otherwise known as a PDI to a GM service technician, you have to write down the key code on the work order that's attached to the PDI paperwork that you fill out.
    So it's possible to call the dealer that originally sold the car and get the code. Especially if you live in a small town or know the service manager well. It's not the bitting code but a 4 digit alphanumeric code that translates to a bitting code, IIRC.
    As a service tech at a small-town GM dealership, I've done so many of those in-the-dash on Impalas, Pontiac Grand Prixs and Grand Ams and Bonneviles, Buick Centuries, etc...that it's ridiculous. 99% of the time, a wire to the cylinder would break and set off the theft deterrent rendering the ignition inoperative so it would be towed in. Replace the cylinder and send em on their way.

    Great help. My 2009 GMC Canyon had the tailgate replaced and the key does not work. Since I put a tonneau cover on I have been looking at replacing the cylinder. I know this video deals with the ignition, but the tail gate cylinder will use the same cuts, not sure how many it uses, but the same cuts.

    This is exactly what I was after, I've got a line on an astro van but my mechanic lost the key. The tricky bit for me will be getting the cylinder out. I'll have to figure out some way to tension the sidebar if they cant find it. Here's hoping they can find the key

    I had to purchase a new ignition just like to one you show from GM. My1996 Truck would not allow me to turn the key back enough to remove the key. I now have new and the old in my hand just like you have in this video. How do I take apart my old one so I can match my new one to my existing keys?

    Somewhere I think I have a Kent-Moore staking tool for those locks (for peening/staking the caps) but I don't handle automotive. I could send it your way if you have a use for it.

    Your videos are pretty incredible. Do you have one that shows you how to put the tabs/wafers and springs back into a GM glove box barrel circa 1969? I removed the busted lock and had pulled out the barrel to install the new latch and the springs and wafers slid into my hand! Trying to figure out how to reassemble and figure out what the sequence is. Any diagram or video link would be appreciated.

    worked on a Z groove trunk cylinder today...had to tear it down and rekey it to a new key, then reinstall the stupid face cap.

      $100 is a steal! They'll come to your house and rekey it for $100? I would do that and get on with my life in a heartbeat.

    • @GottSegneDich
      @GottSegneDich 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeff Sparrow Even with a 10 cut ford, you can impression 6 from the door and then 4 from the ignition since the side bar will be angled down. We have found over the years that you can also impression from the ignition because it marks on the side of the key.
      As with 10 cut ignitions, you can drill a hole to the side bar, put pressure on it and pick it to the ON position. Or you can use a throw out ring pressed between the housing and side bar to pick it over.
      On a sedan you can impression the door and get 6 cuts, 7 and 8 from the trunk, and progress the last two.
      These are just a few ways to generate a key to a 10 cut ignition. I work in a high volume environment. We don’t have time to pull out ignitions all the time.

      @@GottSegneDich but the truck needs 1 through 5 solved. Are you saying that you can impression those once you get 6 through 10 figured out?

    • @GottSegneDich
      @GottSegneDich 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeff Sparrow You get the first 6 from the door.
