  • GM 6 cut was used between about 1968 and 1996 and used a fairly standard procedure for taking apart the locks. I detail that here.
    I split this into two videos, you can find the process of rekeying the lock here: • GM 6 cut Series Part 2...
    As always, I am by no means an expert so you may have other tips/tricks for doing this and I may have goofed on one or two explanations or whatever, so no refunds.

    One thing that I noticed wasn't mentioned which can be very helpful when sight reading these. Are if all your cuts that you get don't add up to an even number but instead an odd number. You have one of them wrong in that case. All cuts on these 6 cut GMs will add to even numbers. unless its been rekeyed wrongly.

I'm just a bit lost as to what to use to decode GM door keys, I have decoders for master/kuikset/american lock/etc etc what chart do I use to get the closest bitting to cut a fresh key? I have a key machine and a lishi hand cutter as well... thoughts?

    do you happen to have ignition switch lock cylinder tear down? im curious and wondering if i can change the um 🤔 little trim piece on the exterior. I replaced my ignition switch and the new is black. I want to swap it for the chrome one on the other ignition switch. Its the older style. From 80s and before.

      No that part isn’t switchable you would have to purchase it chrome

    great video! thank you. someone keep trying to steal my old truck and everytime messes up the lock cylinders. I am trying to rekey but I can't get that cap off. I tried to buy those pliers locally and no luck. I guess you have to be a locksmith to get them. would you happen to have an old set of those pliers for sale or know how to purchase a pair, what model are they? thank you!

    • @selock
      @selock  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      cb brooks you can remove the cap with channel locks/etc, just be careful not to break the rim. There are quite a few parts needed to rekey, have you checked around your area to see if there is a older locksmith store (physical location) around before you go having to buy replacement caps and such?

    Hi, LOved the video - I have a 1988 CHevrolet K5 blazer and I need a glove box, door and rear door key cut as I lost my oval key. I am pretty sure the glove box and doors are the same keys. Can you cut me a key if I send you the glove box lock. THanks, Dave

    • @selock
      @selock  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, GM glove boxes only had 4 of the 6 necessary wafers. While it’s common to use the GB if a locksmith is at the vehicle, they still had to progress the keys to identify the remaining two cuts so they would still need access to door or trunk.

      Many distributors still stock. If you aren't a locksmith you might want to call around to a local locksmith location to see if you could purchase. Last case would be eBay or such :) Thanks for watching. If you cannot find them locally and just need one or two we can sell them but local would save you the shipping

    just a side note that I did not see mentioned: if you add all the cuts up it will be a even number
