DJI Naza Quadcopter Getting Started and Running in Less Than 10 Minutes - Upgrade from KKMulticopter

  • I finally took the plunge and upgraded my KKmulticopter flight controller to the DJI Naza. I've been wanting to do this for a while, but as you know the Naza is quite an investment over the KK board.
    This video will show you how to get your Naza in the air in less than 10 minutes. This assumes you've already wired everything up and focuses mainly on the software configuration.
    One thing I failed to mention in the video is if you're doing a quad X configuration you want to make sure your props are mounted in the proper direction.
    - The front right motor is #1 and prop should spin counter-clockwise
    - The font left motor is #2 and prop should spin clockwise
    - The back left motor is #3 and prop should spin counter-clockwise
    - The back right motor is #4 and prop should spin clockwise
    If you have any questions please post them in the comments and I'll see what I can do to help. I plan on doing a video of some of the more advanced Naza features when I get some free time.

    Dennis, I continue to be amazed at the DJI Naza M with GPS. I did have two crashes, both caused by me. Once the battery fell out, it fell from 100ft and broke two arms and props. The second time, I accidentally switched to manual mode when the quadcopter was at a steep angle far away from me, I over controlled and put it into a tumble. Dropped from 200 feet or more. All 4 arms broken, 4 props, 2 motors torn off. I had extra parts, put it all together, works like new, no damage to Naza.

    It was smart to have failsafe configured and ready to use. Nice job.

    Donald, that's what I wanted to hear! Nice job and yes the Naza is a pretty amazing little FC. It's even more impressive given the wind conditions you were flying in. I'm looking forward to seeing some vids soon. Thanks for the feedback.

    Dennis, thanks for your video. I finally got my Futaba, Got everything synced, and took my Storm Drone outside in 17 mph winds. The NAZA M is amazing, it just stayed in place, drifting slightly, amazing. And, flying around what a difference from the controller that came with it. Before, if I took my eyes off of the quad for a few seconds, I might be in trouble, this thing, Once the battery drained it softly landed on it's own!

    My transmitter and receiver work well with the storm drone from heli pal. After watching some videos, I have ordered a futaba transmitter and receiver, the same one I have seen in one of the NAZA M videos. That should solve my problem, thanks for getting back to me. I like your videos!

    Tank You.
    I already buy it :)
    Last night I was not sleaping, trying to mount and setup Naza.
    Still need to calibrate it and tes flight. Hope will be all ok.
    In last 24 h I already learn haw to setup failsafe on DX6i.
    With some luck, I hope that tomorow can fly it and be happy :)
    Have a nice weekend !

    It handles great. I upgraded to the Turnigy 9X so I could set different flight modes and get more control over my channels. I flew with the DX5e for several months before getting a 9X off of eBay. It's one of the best transmitters for the money.

    That's a good suggestion. I actually ended up turning mine over and letting the LED show through a hole in the frame. It would be better if I mounted on the bottom and I'll definitely consider it in the near future. Thanks.

    True. I've spent a lot of money through trial and error and probably would have been better paying extra for a packaged product that works out of the box. But part of the fun has been the learning experience. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

    I'm sorry to hear that, but glad you're getting back into the hobby. It is a strange feature when coming from KK, but you definitely get used to it. I've never seen a case where the motors spin out of control when arming. They always spin at a slow idle before I apply throttle. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good question. I wasn't able to get my DX5e to work. The problem I had was channel 5 had a fix PWM for each endpoint and I couldn't adjust the PWM. Therefore I was unable to use it for changing flight modes on my NAZA. I had to upgrade to the Turnigy 9X to get this feature to work.

    I know this is a simple question, but what receiver are you using with your Devo 7? Have you gone though the bind process and does the receiver respond to inputs from your TX? I'm just wondering if you take the Naza out of the equation are you able to spin up your motors directly?

    Hey Dennis I watched your vid and you really helped me a lot to get my my NAZA assistant up and running. My Assistant looks a lot different than yours so I dont know if we have different versions or what but its mostly the same stuff. One thing thats bugging me is that My Assistant doesnt seem to have a button or a way to write to the controller. If it does then I sure cant find it.

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes. Everything is flying perfectly. The Naza is an amazing flight controller and really takes the work out of keeping the quadcopter in the air. Are you currently building one?

    THANKS for the videos, sir my question is, that how we can select the Atti and manual mode. and can we make f450 still in the air using DX5e.
    and can we use GPS with DX5e. please answer.

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I hear you. If you're buying a fully packaged setup you're definitely looking at that price. But if you decide to get some decent parts and build it yourself you can get it much cheaper. Other than flight controller one of the most expensive pieces are the video goggles. I'm still using a video monitor, but hopefully one day I'll get some goggles or build my own :)

  • @GeorgeBonez
    @GeorgeBonez 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yep you're right about the new Assistant writing to the controller in real-time. The reason I cant get up a fly in ten minutes is because my 9XR radio w/ (Orange 9CH DSM2 RX) is as new to me as the NAZA is. I am trying to learn it all at once and thats tough man. Right now I have my channels 1,2,3,4 wired correctly and The Assistant agrees. I am still struggling with my 3 position switch to setup the [GPS][Atti][Manual] flight modes. my 3 pos sw is moving the slider but not to the right place

  • @GeorgeBonez
    @GeorgeBonez 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am hopefully about to move up to the NAZA from my KK1 but I have to say. I DO NOT like the 3 sec spin arming thing. Is there a way of arming with no spin at all?

    When I try to connect to my mac, with parallels, and with a MS machine, the MC output stays on and I cannot get it to calibrate my transmitter. Maybe it is because I am trying to use a Devo 7 with my Storm Drone. Any thoughts?

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, I'm using a MacBook Pro running Windows 7 using Parallels. You can probably use Bootcamp or even VMware's Fusion, but I'm most familiar with Parallels. I can guarantee that the Naza hooked up via USB using Parallels works without any problems. I hope this helps.

    Thank you for the feedback. I'm working on a new build for the QAV400 and I'm going to cover some of these topics. Is there a particular flight controller you're interested in? I'm going to test the QAV400 with the NAZA, MWC, and APM 2.5 hopefully.

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't believe there's a way around this. I took the same upgrade path as you, from KK to Naza but didn't find the arming sequence to be that much of a pain. I got used to it pretty quick and it's a great way from me to know whether or not my controller is armed.

    Hi, great job, I have a old Toshiba about 6 years old. I can not get the Naza software to work in my lap top? it can not see when I plug it in??? I called Naza and all they tell me is I did something wrong? maybe I did? I do not know?

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I used to have the DX5e and couldn't get it to work. The problem is that I could set a specific PWM for the 5th channel so it wasn't possible to get the slider where I wanted it to be. I decided to upgrade to the Turnigy 9X for more capabilities.

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    What type of TX/RX setup do you currently have? I really like the Turnigy 9X radio and if you get the FrSky TX/RX combo for the Turnigy 9X you won't be disappointed with the range. Probably the best range you can get for the money.

    @dennisbaldwin  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    George, this video was created almost a year ago so I was using an older version of the assistant. Anyway, I was concerned about the same thing regarding "writing" to the Naza controller. My belief is that it writes changes automatically as you change them in the user interface. I'm pretty sure that's the case. If it's not then I must be crazy because it sure does feel like it's working.

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I hear you loud and clear. I love the Naza. I had a similar battery crash with my APM 2.5. Boy did I feel like an idiot when the battery slid out and detached from the quad about 50ft in the air. That won't be happening again. Glad to hear you're up and running again. BTW, if you want to chat more check out garagepilots . com and please sign up. Thanks for the note.

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    When you say it's not working are you talking about the Naza Assistant software or is there a problem with the Naza controller being recognized via USB? I believe I have a Windows 8 beta running in Parallels so let me see if I can reproduce your problem. I'm sure you may already know this, but you can run multiple versions of Windows under the same Parallels install. For example, on my MBP I'm running Parallels with Win XP, Win 7, and Win 8.

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  10 ปีที่แล้ว

    The attitude mode is set by your transmitter. So if you cannot adjust the output for that channel then you can't change to attitude mode. It's not currently possible to do with the DX5e.

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good question. Unfortunately you can't. I was hoping to do the same, but couldn't get my PWMs set on the DX5e so I had to upgrade to the Turnigy 9X.

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The 9X takes some getting used to. I can't say it's easy, but once you figure it out it starts to make more sense. I fly with Simon K and really enjoy it. There are guys that swear by it and say that it's much more responsive than the stock ESC firmware.

I downloaded the software on my laptop but nothing. I'm registered with dji so I'm sure I got to put the info in before I can use the software . This is my first drone and had it about two weeks. Yeah you're right. I think I am just being a little over critical of the feature. I just do not like the idea of my props spinning under the control of something other than “me”. I had a pretty bad accident and got cut up pretty bad about 4 years ago tuning a collective pitch 3D heli so I am very head-shy about stuff like this. I am just now getting back into flying after all that and my F450 is what I am using to do it. Almost having your right arm gnawed off will change your life! lol :)

    Granted this is an old video and the Assistant has been upgraded and is now set out somewhat different than your vid. You skipped out setting up the mode switch and ESC calibration. The only thing I know to tell you right now is you'll need an installation of Windows...either via CD or ISO. Then you'll need a way to run this installation either via Mac Boot Camp or Parallels. The Mac Boot Camp version is cheaper because it should be built into your Mac...assuming you have a newer Intel based one. Parallels costs $80 but allows you to run Windows inside Mac OS. Where Boot Camp requires you to restart and boot into Windows....a little bit more work to do. Hope this helps.

    It should be installed on your Mac...assuming you have an Intel based one. Go to Spotlight on your Mac and search for "boot camp". You should see something show up called "Boot Camp Assistant". Click on that and it will walk you through the process.

    Dennis, have you heard of an error where when you set up the Naza you get an error 4 low voltage warning and the naza will not work? I have seen this on forums and no real good advise on how to fix.

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dan Allen No I haven't seen that before. Do you have voltage protection turned on in the Assistant? Perhaps you should disable that while you're configuring. Here is a thread with some different ideas:

      Thanks Dennis. Found out that I did not have the Naza PMU connected to the X3 port on the controller. That solved it.

    Check my latest video and see if it helps. Unfortunately I can't post a link in the comments so you should see a video about installing the driver in Win 8. The first thing that comes to mind related to your issue is do you have the Naza connected and powered when you install the driver? Please post any further questions in the new vid if you don't mind. Thx!

      Paul Antonucci I don't have any experience with the DX6 and ended up upgrading from my DX5e to the Turnigy 9X. But maybe this will help. See page 15 that talks about flight modes:

      Have you installed the DJI Win Driver from here?

    As long as you have a receiver that is compatible with your DX6i you shouldn't have any problems. I'm not sure why your hobby store would tell you this. I've used my Spektrum with my Naza with no problems. If you'd like more help please feel free to join our community at garagepilots . com where you can post in our forums and get help with Naza and other setups.

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      TKHONDA7 I'm not sure what's causing the delay with cutting your throttle. I'd look into your TX/RX settings and see if there's something causing it there. Sorry, wish I could be of more help. Good luck.
