Hats off to you! I've done similar board level repairs on my own equipment and it's such a hassle. You've got a real gift to be able to be this diagnostic with these systems. Luckily when my R9 290X started giving me some really peculiar instability issues in 2021, simply cleaning and re-timming (repasting) the chip and regreasing the fan bearings dropped temps by 22C. The card will now likely live on for years to come. Assuming PCIE maintains legacy hardware beyond PCIE6.
You need more context to understand the issue. AMD 5700 launch was not a disaster, but a failure. Majority of issues were on the software side. But, adding to the injury, some "partners", like XFX, delivered a HORRIBLE card design. XFX were by far the biggest offender. The person who sent it to you should've returned or RMA'd this atrocity. The XFX THICC I and II were really bad, with low build quality, overheating and lots of other issues. After that, they released the 3rd revision. It had 3 fans and performed WAY BETTER than the other models. I know this, because when I made a GPU upgrade the THICC III was priced great and had good reviews and was my GPU for the next 5 years. But when researching the topic I read a lot of sht about the previous revisions

What I am always surprised by is how the heating needed to remove and replace the GPU doesn't desolder anything within the GPU or external elements like those smd chips on the top of the GPU.
It does, but the components don’t just fly away as soon as they’re desoldered. Just be careful not to hit other things and it’s fine, it’ll just harden when it cools down back to how it was.
@@avi8r66 They don't fly away because of something called "suface tension". Everytime you solder a component, if the solder flows nicely you see the component kinda moves by itself to it's place, that's what surface tension does and if you go ahead and "poke" that same component to the side while the solder is still melted you see it returns back to it's place. That's why they don't fly away, because surface tension holds them into place. Now obviously, that force is not strong enough to hold them into place against everything, so if your hot air has too much air flow it's going to blow components off the board when the solder melts.
I think it is XFX that manufactured this card and not AMD. Only the Chip comes from AMD as far as I know. So it is like: "Here is the proof that AMD hates you", when having problems with an Asus Mainboard.

Weird. My friend and I had less problems with Amd compared to nvidia (gone through 5 cards which where not mined on) but maybe its just pure luck.
Amazing! your patience and thoroughness is admirable! subbed!
Im not saying this never happens. It can happen to any product. But i have been using AMD(Radeon) cards for over 20 years. Overclocking, bios flashing and what not and I have NEVER had any issues.
Your videos are REALLY funny but also accurate. Thx for your work to not waste old stuff!
THE GUITAR CAT JUST BROUGHT ME TO MY KNEES
Clicked for the repair video but liked and subbed for the awesome feline guitar solo. Great work!
ahh reminds me of the good ol days when I was in my lab in the US Navy as a micro mini repair tech among other jobs... seeing you redo all those solder balls... man I wish I had the tools and setup at home - wait... cries... no, no... I don't. You are much better tech than I am lol. Well done. I am worth so much more than the time it took you to try to fix... so are you.
lol my very first check.... "is it plugged in?"
Heck yaaa.. Yo do need a vacation man. No one would spend that much time to fix it. Salute to you my man. So much patience.. Owo.
Great content. I did BGA reballing for 11 years and totally quit that aspect for the last 7 years, doing electronic repairs and moved into automotive. Your videos inspire me to get back into it, I still have my rework king equipment I spent like £4k on.
Someone please send Tony an electric screwdriver to review.
