IOC is pretty amazing. What it does it regardless of which way your Naza front is pointed your forward pitch will always move your quad forward. This means you don't have to worry about orientation and makes it much easier to fly. Hope that makes sense. You can download the Naza manual from the DJI site and look at page 21 to see how to set it up.
Just received my Disco, thanks D for the reminder of the 1,2,3,4 config! Always a bugger to figure out. Just for you other folks, RIT dying the DJI arms works like a charm if you are looking for a true TBS choonit! Thanks to Raph, these are awesome upgrade frames!!
Great Job this is Soldierflyer53 I'm using my wife's ipad so I put my TBS frame together on Sunday after I crashed my DJI F450 on Saturday, It was great I had to zip to fly! I love this frame good video
What up OG? I like that rubber band idea. Just not sure how much it will dampen vibrations, but will do some testing. The next thing I'm going to try is the orange foam earplugs you see all the time. Those are made out of memory foam and apparently dampen vibration really well. See you in a couple weeks.
Glad you like it. It's been a great asset for all of us getting started in the wild world of multirotors. Looking forward to seeing your Naza in the air soon.
Very cool to know. I actually used RIT several years ago on a white watch band that I had. I wanted to dye it black and it worked fairly well. Hadn't even thought about it for DJI arms. Great idea.
It's been quite some time since I've actually flown my F450, but to answer your question it definitely flies differently. When I first switched it took me a while to get used to the TBS flight characteristics. It's definitely less agile than F450 and it does seem to pitch forward less, which means it takes more work to counteract that motion (pitching back). I fly with a few guys here so let me know if you make it back to Austin. Thanks.
I have tried many different types of materials with mixed results. I just made an earplug mount last week and I think it's the best thing so far. They are the same bright orange ones you mentioned in your comment above.
Thanks for the comment. I guess it would be possible to solder your receiver directly to the NAZA, but wouldn't be worth the effort. The benefit of not having it hard-wired is you can replace your receiver easily and change any aux/gear connections if you're messing with different flight modes. The NAZA gets power from the NAZA VU, which is the component that has the LED and USB connector on it. I hope this helps a bit.
You can definitely connect them without using the frame. It just makes it a little easier to place things if you do use the frame connectors. I'm actually not using them right now because one of them broke off. So I have my ESCs wired directly into the Naza and the receiver leads running into the other end of the Naza.
Thanks for pointing out the fact I didn't list my props in the description above. I'm using 10x4.5 props and they work well, but I'd like to give 9" props a try to see if that would reduce some of the vibration. My quad is almost 3lbs fully loaded so I'm not sure 9" will cut it with a 3S battery. 11 minutes is pretty awesome I must say. What size battery and props are you using?
Yes, I received it for Christmas. It's quite an amazing machine and I'm hoping to become more proficient with it. Right now I'm trying to get comfortable with everything you can do with it, which is pretty much anything. Thanks for the feedback and I'm hoping to post more useful info about it soon.
Joey I like the new software but I cant say much about the older ver because I never used it! I now have my "arming" issues all worked out and I just wanna fly! I put in a few mins of stick-time yesterday and I flew like a freakin MADMAN today. All I have left is to get my gimbal mounted & clibrated and to get my FPV gear mounted on my quad. Joey I am so blown-away by the NAZA controller that I dont even have the words to describe it :)
That's a great suggestion and something I've been wondering about. Do you have any recommendations for good vibration material? Someone actually told me that the most effective material for the money is to use the fluorescent orange earplugs that you see all the time. The ones made out of memory foam. Sounds quirky, but I may give it a try.
That's killer to hear. I can't wait to get to Home Depot and get some. It's pretty funny to think about an "earplug mount". But talk about cheap and effective!
Nice setup. My TBS discovery with FPV equipment ways just over 3 lbs (3.06). You're absolutely right about motor speed and prop size. I'm trying to get this dialed in. Thanks for the suggestion on the carbon props. Which brand do you fly with?
Thanks Joey. I've been flying with Simon Ks on my Naza setup and love them. The response time is much better than my previous Turnigy firmware. Haven't tried Simon K with KK2 but will do that in the near future. Hope all is well.
I've never flown my NAZA with GPS and it flies incredible without it. When I decided to get a GPS flight controller I went with the APM 2.5 and love it. I may get the NAZA w/ GPS someday but I really enjoy flying without it. I do FPV pretty close up so I haven't ventured too far out. When I decide to go far out that's when I'll use my APM with RTL. Hope that helps.
Had an F450 frame flying well for about a month, lost it the other day so now starting from scratch with TBS Disco. Thanks for the video, very helpful! Lets hope I don't lose my disco..
I'm going to order some this weekend hopefully. I've heard CF props are insanely durable so I'm excited about getting a set or two. Thanks for the tip.
Yes, for FPV the Discovery is great. If you're looking to fly with a gimbal and do aerial photo/video stuff then TBS isn't really the best platform. The TBS may help with your orientation issues, but you could also consider getting a Naza GPS and flying using IOC (intelligent orientation control). Just a thought.
I'm assuming you RIT dyed the white arms? If so, what color? That sounds like a great mod that I may have to give a try. Thanks for the tip and good luck with your TBS.
It's what I used to get started since it will do video out and record at the same time. But I was having problem with the FOV and perspective, so I upgraded to a Sony CCD with 600TVL. There's a vid in my channel that shows it in more details. But if you're just getting started with FPV and have a GoPro then I would recommend giving it a try.
My all up weight is a little over 3 lbs with all the FPV equipment. So my flight time with this battery is between 6 and 7 minutes. I'm hoping to order a bigger one soon!
You should be okay with those holes as long as you don't plan on soldering any header pins there. Now I'm not sure what the dimensions of WKM are so that may be something to consider, but my guess it that it should fit. Also, check out the HT-FPV frame because I believe there's more mounting space available.
Very nice build video. One thing I would suggest is to put some dampening material between the frame and the back of the camera to reduce vibrations. The dampening material will also push the camera forward to eliminate the props from your camera's view.
The X666 frame looks very nice. I have a Turnigy Talon frame which has a similar design and I really enjoyed flying it. I'll be anxious to hear when you get up and running. I've been using the GoPro to film in 1080P mode, but that doesn't affect the TV output resolution which is what I'm using for FPV. Hope that makes sense!
3.6kg thrust is pretty good. What motors and props are you running? Also, what GoPro gimbal are you using to get the tilt action or is it a homegrown setup?
Thanks Dennis , would you say you are pleased with the conversion , and think this is a better option than a gimbal?? I don't have FPV or a GO PRO yet and sometimes find my Naza difficult to orientate in flight and think the shape of the TBS will improve this and also have the extra space when I get the cameras . cheers Scott
thank you again for another great video for all of us... I am building one right now. My first build. Just wondered where you put the battery for the FPV transmitter and how you hooked up the transmitter.
NorCalHkyplayer I mounted the battery on top next to the transmitter. It's a small 800mAh that doesn't weigh too much. I hooked up the TX using a cable that connects to my GoPro. Right now I've been using this TX which makes it really easy to setup and adds very little weight: th-cam.com/video/oBcLCbuO8OY/w-d-xo.html
I'm not sure where to get the TBS within the US. I had to order from the UK. I do know there's a frame that's fairly similar by HoverThings called the HT-FPV. That I'm pretty sure ships from the US. Good luck with your build.
The TBS is a great frame. To answer your question if I were to buy a frame right now I would go with the QAV series. I just bought the QAV400 a couple months ago and it's awesome. It's considerably smaller than the TBS so if you're looking for something that size then check the QAV500. I like TBS because it uses the NAZA arms and all of these frames have the power distribution built into the frame. I've never shorted any components on a hard crash, but not saying it isn't possible. Good luck :)
Thanks for the feedback. Well if he was being sarcastic and that was actually a lot of jello then I can't imagine how stable your setup must be! I've done a few builds and the TBS Discovery had the least amount of jello out of all of them. Now given they didn't have the vibration foam in stock so I had to cobble something together. I recently started trying some foam earplugs as recommended by one of the TBS guys and it appears to be working fairly well. I'll post a vid with them so you can see.
Scott, good question. The motors I'm using are actually cheaper DJI alternatives so the standard DJI should work just fine. I've seen several guys flying the TBS with the stock DJI motors.
hi can you tell me if I can use the dji moters that were supplied with my naza 450 kit on the TBS discovery conversion , as I noticed on the very helpful video you had used different moters , and I just wondered if I needed to change them thanks scott
Congrats on the TBS and I'm looking forward to seeing you in the air. I love the APM 2.5 but it isn't as stable as the NAZA out of the box. You can get there with some know-how and tweaking. It's still a great FC and it's getting better every day given that it's open source.
No I sure don't. If I understand what you're saying these small red wires from the motors to the Naza controller are power connections. Can you point me to a thread where this is suggested?
The TBS does have a weird arm configuration. It's sort of like an X with the front two arms spread out a bit more. I've heard someone refer to it as a "splat cat" :)
Ha. Thanks I appreciate that. I actually found them but haven't ordered them yet. How long did it take for you to get them? That's my biggest complaint when ordering cheap quad parts if you have to wait too long for overseas shipping. Or pay a ton for expedited shipping!
hey dennis, joey here thanks for watching my video that was my 2nd fight but i fly it high then the tree until i change my lipo battery to 4000mah 11.1 volt it last alot longer i get more flite time about 8 to 10 minutes, but i think i need a better motor. so thanks again.
Great to hear from you and hope all is well. Thanks for the feedback. Did you purchase the TBS Core with your setup? Glad to hear you're now flying the TBS although you had to sacrifice the F450 :)
All of the major components are listed in the video description. I'm not sure what you're getting with the $1,700 quote, but hopefully it comes ready to fly. Sometimes it's easy to compare solely on the price, but not take into consideration that there's a fair amount of time spent tuning and getting your craft in the air. You should definitely be able to get in the air if you have the money, time, and patience :)
NO I prefer the FPV idea and I think the GO PRO fits on the TBS well , and will be fine for what I want , you have probably guessed im very new to all this Dennis and im not the best with tec , I do have a Naza GPS on my quad but I don't now anything about IOC , could I trouble you to explain how this will help me .
hey dennis, i was wondering what changes in terms of in flight characteristics youve noticed in your transition from the DJI 450 Flamewheel airframe to that of the TBS Disvovery. All things equal (like, using the same motors, esc's, and props) is the Discoverys forward flight speed faster? does it pitch nose forward less for a faster speed? thanks for your reply.Next time im in Austin we'll have to do some formation flying. i used to live on 51st and guadalupe. Intramural fields. Live in EP now
GREAT VIDEO MAN! I'm new to this hobby and just wanted ask a few Q's. 1. most ppl. use 900kv you used 950kv what is the difference? 2. If I was to build the frames using a 3d printer the circuits on the board (DJI TBS) won't be there how can I compensate for that? 3.Using the Naza +gps wouldn't I need to use a kk2 board or the Naza does all that? Thank you ever so much.
Great video, thanks. I am heading to San Marcos tomorrow for a two week vacation and will be rebuilding to the discovery on Saturday. Maybe we can get together and fly while I am in your neck of the woods :)
this frame look good i just got my f450 with A2 FC but fail to calibrate the compass the led just wont turn blue it turh off......but it still respond and turn green when i rotate it my just flip when take off because of that
Im in the middle of ordering stuff for my first quad,I just ordered the naza mv2,and im now looking to get the rest. Im torn between the Hover Things Flip FPV and the Discovery. Your video is almost a year old,,,do you still recommend it or looking back or having to do it over would you pick something else? Im also a newb, the circuit board frame kinda scares me,Im thinking if I crash hard and break the board it will short out all my expensive components,Is this a possibility?
Since im using the gopro for recording and fpv i though i should use tilt so i can look down while im flying and im planing to make a bunch of holes in one of my gopro cases to protect lens but make the gopro with the case and transmiter av cable and power supply and servo all weight 200 grams add that to 1140 grams make that 1340 from my 3.6kilogram thrust
what size props did you use i'm running 750 motors on my discovery but i'm looking for best flight time having a hard time beating 11 minutes no mater what I do
Nice n informational vid! Im planning to build one. You did not mention anything abt where the CG is for this quad. Is that smthing we need to consider? Tnx!
i'm running 9x4.5 on 750kv motors 11 minutes on a 7500mah 3s venom pack and i'm putting 4227mah back in so I still got some play time left in her i'm thinking of going to a 10x4.5 or a 10x5 but i'm not sure thats the right move either
If I want to install a WKM ( Wookong M Autopilot system ) on the board can I without any interference from those Header Pin holes? I wouldn't be installing any of the FPV stuff I just want a bigger board for building my F450.
Hey Dennis or Joey My NAZA-M w/ GPS just cam in ok. I have my "Assistant" hooked up and workng great (I think) but I cannot get the damn thing to arm. What am I doing wrong guys? Dennis I am using the 9XR which should be pretty much like the 9X right? I am using the Orange 9ch DSM2 mod. The Assistant shows my sticks moving so that tells me that the FC see's my radio commands. Please help if ya can k !!! Thanks :)
Hello just a question, how is trhe flying with no GPS on the NAZA because all the videos i have seen so far almost ALL have the NAZA with the GPS!!! Is there a huge diference on flying without the GPS?? Thanks
Haven't tried other colors aside from black. I have used red and white arms, both seem to accept color just fine. I also have used the liquid and powder versions and they work the same. The liquid is a tad more expensive but way cleaner and less messy and toxic (the powder version stinks and prolly not too good to inhale). Be sure to by a cheapie disposable aluminum baking sheet to throw away when your finished, it makes an awful permanent mess if you're not careful.
Hello I have the TBS discovery Pro all set up except that I can't make it run the lights goes on when I plug the battery in but my remote is not binding with the drone I can't figure out what to do make it work
I use uhf and 2.4ghz 500mw transmiter so its not a problem though gopro interrfiers with uhf so thats aproblem. i could probably get about 3 miles on my system
Hey Graham, if I recall it was about 9 minutes. I no longer have this build but that's around the time I was getting. The 10" props definitely gave me a bit more time than the 8" I'm now flying on the QAV400.
Excellent Tutorial Dennis. When I upgrade from my f450 to the TBS Discovery, i will reference your vid. Well Done. Thanks for sharing.
You got it, Tom. Thanks for following along and good luck when you get around to your build.
Thanks for the suggestion. I will definitely consider that. I like the idea of making it swappable.
What up OG? I like that rubber band idea. Just not sure how much it will dampen vibrations, but will do some testing. The next thing I'm going to try is the orange foam earplugs you see all the time. No sweat. I'd love to hear what you end up doing....especially if you get the HT-FPV. I've been wanting to get one.
Very cool to know. I actually used RIT several years ago on a white watch band that I had. I wanted to dye it black and it worked fairly well. Hadn't even thought about it for DJI arms. Great idea.

hi joey here, it took my tbs discovery to get here in the u s about three weeks, but i'm happy, now i'm going to assemble it together,
I have tried many different types of materials with mixed results. I just made an earplug mount last week and I think it's the best thing so far. They are the same bright orange ones you mentioned in your comment above.

You can definitely connect them without using the frame. It just makes it a little easier to place things if you do use the frame connectors. I'm actually not using them right now because one of them broke off. So I have my ESCs wired directly into the Naza and the receiver leads running into the other end of the Naza.
No thank you for inviting me Dennis! Man thats a great forum!
Thanks for pointing out the fact I didn't list my props in the description above. Joey, congrats and good luck with your build. I'll be looking forward to seeing your maiden flight!
That is some insane hover time! Are you suggesting that the H hovers better and more efficiently than the X config? Thanks for the tip.
Thanks Joey. I've been flying with Simon Ks on my Naza setup and love them. The response time is much better than my previous Turnigy firmware. Haven't tried Simon K with KK2 but will do that in the near future. Hope all is well.

Had an F450 frame flying well for about a month, lost it the other day so now starting from scratch with TBS Disco. Thanks for the video, very helpful! Lets hope I don't lose my disco..
Duncan Lewis I really enjoyed my Discovery and hope you do too. Let's definitely hope you don't lose it! Good luck with the build.
I'm going to order some this weekend hopefully. I've heard CF props are insanely durable so I'm excited about getting a set or two. Thanks for the tip.
I haven't started my build yet, waiting on motor but wanted to say thanks for the video. (Tom)
Yeah Joey! I just watched and your TBS looks super dialed in. Nice work.
I'm assuming you RIT dyed the white arms? If so, what color? That sounds like a great mod that I may have to give a try. Thanks for the tip and good luck with your TBS.
I am building a Flame wheel first as a trainer. I plan to use the parts off the trainer to upgrade to this at a later date. Thanks for great video.
Jon Car No problem at all. Thanks for watching.
It's what I used to get started since it will do video out and record at the same time. But I was having problem with the FOV and perspective, so I upgraded to a Sony CCD with 600TVL. Nice work. Yeah the TBS is pretty heavy and the handling is very different than the F450 frame. Thanks for the info on your setup.
You should be okay with those holes as long as you don't plan on soldering any header pins there. That's so pretty decent flight time. What's your all up weight? Keep it out of the trees :) I've done that a few times!
I'm in Austin, TX so maybe that will cut a day or two off the delivery time. Appreciate your help.
ive found rc timer 10x4.5 carbon props ccw cw to be awesome the flight times and stability has increased significantly and hardly get any more woble.
thank you again for another great video for all of us...
Right now I've been using this TX which makes it really easy to setup and adds very little weight:

Thanks for your time to make this movie
I just measured with my digital calipers and both top and bottom plate are right at 1.5mm.
It's been great so far. I'm still trying to get rid of some of the jello in my GoPro shots. Are you flying or thinking about flying a TBS Discovery?
Great to hear from you and hope all is well. Thanks for the feedback. Did you purchase the TBS Core with your setup? Glad to hear you're now flying the TBS although you had to sacrifice the F450 :)

On my way man! Thanks and Ill be there in just a few minutes...
hey dennis, i was wondering what changes in terms of in flight characteristics youve noticed in your transition from the DJI 450 Flamewheel airframe to that of the TBS Disvovery.
Live in EP now
No problem. Thank you for the feedback.
Where can you buy the TBS Discovery in the US? All I can find on the web is in the UK? Thanks for sharing, hope to do a similar build.
Great video, thanks. I am heading to San Marcos tomorrow for a two week vacation and will be rebuilding to the discovery on Saturday. Maybe we can get together and fly while I am in your neck of the woods :)
J.R. Blackett Cool. I'm going to be traveling a couple days later this week, but hopefully I can break free. Good luck with your TBS rebuild!
Is it necessary to connect the wires from the naza to the tbs frame or can they be connected as if I wasn't using the tbs frame ?
What's your all up weight? Mine TBS is right at 3 lbs.
No problem and thanks for the feedback. Yes, we normally call it "jello" when the video looks distorted and wavy :)
very informative great work and build
Thank you and I appreciate you watching.
Dennis Baldwin HMMMM i have never heard of that before and i fly with around 20 Tbs flyers and we all have our naza held down with velcro
this frame look good i just got my f450 with A2 FC
but fail to calibrate the compass the led just wont turn blue
it turh off......but it still respond and turn green when i rotate it
my just flip when take off because of that
hey george, so how do you like there new software its so much better then the old one.
My pleasure and thanks for watching :)
what size props did you use
i'm running 750 motors on my discovery but i'm looking for best flight time
having a hard time beating 11 minutes no mater what I do
Nice n informational vid! Im planning to build one.
You did not mention anything abt where the CG is for this quad.
Is that smthing we need to consider?
Tnx!
tony13985 Yes good point. The CG in this video is right down the middle of the NAZA FC. That's generally where you want it.
i'm running 9x4.5 on 750kv motors
11 minutes on a 7500mah 3s venom pack and i'm putting 4227mah back in so I still got some play time left in her
i'm thinking of going to a 10x4.5 or a 10x5 but i'm not sure thats the right move either
If I want to install a WKM ( Wookong M Autopilot system ) on the board can I without any interference from those Header Pin holes? I wouldn't be installing any of the FPV stuff I just want a bigger board for building my F450.
Anytime. Glad it helped. Take care.
Thanks :)
hi dennis, do you know why someone sugested i leave off small red wires from motors to naza imu?
yes looking to get one write now
Hello just a question, how is trhe flying with no GPS on the NAZA because all the videos i have seen so far almost ALL have the NAZA with the GPS!!!
Be sure to by a cheapie disposable aluminum baking sheet to throw away when your finished, it makes an awful permanent mess if you're not careful.
hi Dennis quick question where is the compass located on the dji system on the gps module or on the flight controller ?
TriniRCmodels It's part of the disc shaped GPS antenna. It includes both the GPS and Compass. Hope that helps.
can you record and use it for downlink at the same time as well?..
Hello I have the TBS discovery Pro all set up except that I can't make it run the lights goes on when I plug the battery in but my remote is not binding with the drone I can't figure out what to do make it work
I use uhf and 2.4ghz 500mw transmiter so its not a problem though gopro interrfiers with uhf so thats aproblem. i could probably get about 3 miles on my system
i've switched out to a 4s 5800 running 10x5 props still getting about 11 minutes of flight
I did goto tiger 770kv motors
Hey what is your range with the turnigy reciever and 5.8ghz system
hi
whats this orange box on midle of frame??
tnx for answer
What kind of flight times were you getting with the 2.45mah battery?
Hey Graham, if I recall it was about 9 minutes. I no longer have this build but that's around the time I was getting. The 10" props definitely gave me a bit more time than the 8" I'm now flying on the QAV400.
