What I realized when watching this video is how different Splatoon plays just by having four players on a team. That is a small number compared to a lot of other shooters with teams, so each person alive is impactful. Then, just letting the enemy team respawn and regroup is already giving up a crucial advantage, when instead a win can be confirmed by keeping them disunited.

Oh my god, this is absolutely my number one problem with solo queue. It is almost impossible to press an advantage because players are SO passive. We just took down three and the last is a Jet Squelcher on their plat! We need to draw lines on the opposite side of the objective right now, not continue to sit in our base and wait for them to start contesting the objective again! Similarly, if you give up the entire map (in a neutral, even situation) in order to have a favorable fight in your base, it never pays off, because victory just means you take back the space you gave up for free in the first place.

I'm refraining from going toxic and citing specific examples of the last week of gameplay, but yes, I also have seen myriad example on solo que of players getting to their favorite spot on mid, or even half-way between spawn and mid and then just,
chillin', not painting overmuch, not laying traps or building special or even containing enemy penetrations, just defending their particular square and then getting splatted, anyway. And I do think that it's players who are sick of getting splatted but do not know how to create favorable encounters. Also, players who have yet to internalize that high ground or cover is only strategically useful SOMETIMES and that enemies can do much to counter it.

'If fighting is sure to result in victory, then you must fight!' Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that no living man could best him in the ring of honor.

I like this reference. Also, The Art of War might be an interesting read to see what, if any material is relevant to Splatoon.

I think this is where there's there's clarification required on verbiage. "Playing safe" in competitive PvP games could mean anything from "stay in spawn and concede so you don't die even if it means losing" to "play extremely aggressively, but only to the extent that you're keeping the odds as in your favour as possible."
The latter is pretty much what you always want to do, because that can include plays like intentionally hard pushing and forcing trades to keep the game state in your team's favour, since not doing that would be "unsafe" as you'd be giving the opponents a chance to get back into the game.
I think it's mostly a frame of reference thing... If you think of "play safe" to mean "stay alive" vs "maintain highest win percentage" you get totally different answers, but both can be argued to be "playing safe" since "unsafe" could be perceived as both "dying" and/or "losing".
From my experience in competitive gaming over the decades, newer or lower rated players tend to lean more towards "don't die" to be "safe", while more experienced or higher rated players just think of safety as "not giving opponents an opportunity they didn't actively earn".

My initial impression based on the title was all the times the rainmaker carrier didn't swim forward when there was only one, or even no, active opponents. That might be an awareness issue, actually.
As for the actual content of the video, well, in solo Queue at least, I wonder if that kind of a situation is also an awareness issue. We might be able to see that there are only two active opponents, but maybe TEAMMATES!!!!!!!!! ... don't. Well, really, I just don't have much to add or comment on.

It’s also important to analyze the situation on a deeper level than “they’re 2 down, push up”. Especially for lower level teams, I see people do what was describe in the video and lose their fight despite the numbers advantage, turning a 4v2 into a 3v2 or worse. The distinctions that ultimately make a fight result in that vs successfully being able to win the 4v2 and push the last 2 people back are often highly dependent on the specific situation that the match is in (ex, which 2 players are alive, who has specials, how’s the paint situation looking, etc.) Focus on those specifics to optimize the process of going forward when at an advantage.

Charles "NineWholeGrains" Whitehead once said that there is a difference between playing defense and just being passive. Being aggressive and playing defense are not mutually exclusive.

Depending on the mode, your base is almost completely irrelevant, relative to the fact that you’re effectively forcing the rest of your team to fight 3v4 for the spaces that actually matter.

Paint objective relevant turf. Push up the objective line and don't let them have any room to move. That weapon's ink output is pure suppression.
