Drumming Back Oral Cancer: Rikki Rockett's Immunotherapy Story

- When oral cancer threatened to leave Rikki Rockett speechless, the drummer for Poison found an immunotherapy clinical trial.
In June 2015, Rikki visited his primary care doctor with a sore throat. His doctor found a small tumor at the base of his tongue, and Rikki learned he had human papillomavirus (HPV)-related oral cancer. He endured nine rounds of chemotherapy and 37 sessions of radiation therapy. The tumor initially responded, but returned three months later, spreading to his lymph nodes. Rikki then saw Dr. Ezra Cohen at UCSD Moores Cancer Center, who helped him enroll in a clinical trial of pembrolizumab (Keytruda®). Rikki’s tumor responded immediately. Just over two months into the trial, a scan revealed that his tumor had shrunk over 90%. Today Rikki is cancer-free, enjoys playing with his band, Poison, caring for his two children, and practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. www.cancerresearch.org/patients

I hope we cure all forms of cancer.
My husband was just diagnosed with this in March and and it was stage 3. They removed over half his tongue and made him a new one with skin from his forearm! He is now about halfway through his 30 days of radiation! Doing radiation as a precautionary measure to make sure all the cancer cells are gone! It’s been a hard road and he has braved it very well! He keeps trying to work through it all to provide for his family!! He is such a superstar to me! God bless to you Mr. Rocket and to your family on beating this!!
I’m happy for you. My dad died however and no one in the medical field wanted to help him. They certainly didn’t mention immunotherapy at all. They probably said 92 who cares, that’s the way I perceived it, because of the attitudes, involved. 2016 is long gone and it’s to late. A part of me died that day.
Why are they silent about this breakthrough trees?
Cancer sucks. My dad passed in 2011 of oral cancer. Glad you were able to kick it’s ass!!
I too am a cancer survivor from 3 different cancers. I have a genetic cancer syndrome. I was diagnosed with colon cancer at age 31-the same cancer killed my mom at 29 when I was only 9 weeks old. They were watching me from the age of 28 and we didn't know it was cancer until the pathology came back-thankfully, stage 1. I've had thyroid cancer at 19 and many precancerous tumor in between surgeries. Keep rockin!!
Way to go Rikki! Keep fighting! I am at 10 weeks after my treatment ( 7 weeks of radiation & chemo) for Squamous cell cancer and doing well. Been a battle but I will not give up. Prayers to you and your family. I am married, have two grown daughters and 2 grandkids.

I just wanted to thank you for sharing your cancer story. My wife got leukemia just as the lockdown for covid. As you know it turned our world upside down. She got a 10 out of 10 stem cell transplant and appears to be doing well. We will always have the fear that it comes back.

Glad you beat your cancer Mr. Rockett. The world would have lost a truly amazing man. So happy for your survival. You give other people hope of beating cancer. I have a regular customer where I work whose cancer has come and gone at least 5 times. She lost part of her right to cancer, but she's still fighting. I hope her day comes where she has beaten it completely. You're a hero to other cancer survivors. Rock on Rikki!!

I had squamous cell carcinoma removed from my left/mid upper lip removed 15 years ago losing my Cupid’s bow n a little piece of my lip hence a scar/lump n an uneven mouth that I try to correct but oh well it is what it is n nobody notices unless I tell them eww look at this or that. You’re never going to be too old!!!!!! You’re so lucky to have had a woman like that by your side💙💙. I’m so happy you’re OK!!!!

Nah, I was standing in line at a Poison concert a few years back and Mr.Rocket and his roadie were ridin' their bikes in the parking lot, the roadie approached 2 underage girls in line in front of me and asked them if they were interested in being Mr. Rocket's "special guests" backstage? They looked at each other...said Nah, I looked around the parking lot and saw Mr.Rocket from a good distance away, he bowed his head, shook it, and zoomed off. I thought to myself.....what a tool.
