-- I am not a medical professional, so please always go to your doctor if you have any concerns around symptoms you are experiencing. This is just my personal story about what went wrong with my diagnosis, and why it took so long for me to get diagnosed. I am sharing my story in the hopes of helping others find answers sooner, and to raise awareness around the difficulties of navigating the medical system when you are young and otherwise healthy, and a cancer diagnosis is so unlikely that it doesn't come up as something to be screened for. -

I found this video last week because I was experiencing weird throat pain and my doctor dismissed it as allergies. I'm replying today because after viewing this video, I went back to a different ENT and they did an endoscopy. He found a small mass next to my larynx. It was caught early enough and I should (probably) be okay. I wanted to get in contact with this woman and thank her personally, only to find out she passed away. I'm deeply saddened by this. She may have saved my life and I only wish I could tell her...

@@manojkale4408 I had a mass on my larynx just under 1 inch in diameter. It was caught early and was still stage 0 laryngeal cancer and hadn't spread to lymph nodes yet. Surgery went well and my larynx was kept in tact. It'll have to be monitored closely for a while but for now I look to be in the clear.

@@ellaelliott4415 My pain was located to the left and above my adam's apple. It didn't hurt all the time but hurt sometimes when I swallowed, and all the time when my throat would "flex" like burping or hiccupping. It made my voice a little raspy and felt like some food was stuck in it. Turns out the "food" was a small lump that was slowly getting bigger, and the raspy voice was because it was on my larynx. My first ENT dismissed it as allergies and after viewing this video I saw a second just to be safe. I figured the first was right but I'd sleep better after a second opinion. Good thing I did! After he removed the endoscope he kinda looked at me sheepishly and said "well, we definitely got some data..." then showed me the video. Part of me wants to be really mad at the first guy, but I'm honestly too relieved to carry around that kinda hate.

However, they did an early PET scan and the cancer shrinked as well as lymph nodes, the mass in the stomach is not visible. This woman died. But in the depths of her sorrow, she battled, and she helped many people. This is an amazing and heartbreaking yet empowering and uplifting story. It's so easy to be overwhelmingly discouraged after being diagnosed with a terminal illness. But no matter what, you have to fight. Fight with your heart and soul. Be courageous, be proactive, be a warrior. Yes, you may not survive. But taking productive action, like doing extensive research and sharing your knowledge and experience with others, is rewarding on so many levels. It gives you a sense of purpose, regardless of how dire the prognosis. I might not survive, but I'm gonna make sure I help as many people as I can through my experience. I will fight. And I will die with grace and dignity and love and hopefully impact the lives of others and maybe help save a few.💪💪🤟🤘 stay strong my fellow warriors.

They didn't do any testing. Now the symptoms are worse, she's having her food feel stuck right about in between her breasts just like this woman that did the video. When she drinks liquids sometimes she gets very painful hiccups. I am so sad to think that my daughter may have this cancer. She is going to be getting some tests done in the next week or two. I suppose I better prepare myself for the reality that this could very well take her life. I saw online that once you're diagnosed you have approximately 3 to 12 months to live. And that there are very few survivors. This makes me want to puke. It's my only daughter.. I have 4 unruly sons and one beautiful wonderful daughter. I was 27 years old the first time I was diagnosed with cancer, and just like you I was told that I was a 27 year old female that had stage 4 cancer that they only found in 65-70 yr olds that smoked two packs a day... then at age 58 I was diagnosed again with stage 4 cancer.. I had gone to see my doctor several times over a period of 6-9 months complaining about a sore throat, headache and issues swallowing, he kept putting me on high doses of antibiotics and pain meds.. he thought I had a nasal infection... things didn’t go so well.. so I totally get what’s going on for you.. one more thing was at age 50 I went to see the doc because I just felt lousy, no energy, up at night thirsty and urinating often, doc felt I was depressed so he wanted to prescribe antidepressants, I stood up and looked him square on and said draw my blood and do a complete CBC now! He called me into his office the very next day and told me I was type one diabetic that my blood sugar was 670!!! I’m surprised that he didn’t send me to the hospital immediately.. idiot!!
I have always been a healthy eater, exercised often I weighed 130 most of my life... .. I’m now 62 I live off grid alone, I split several cords of firewood for heat and cooking on wood stove.. it’s hard work but it’s truly beautiful. Bless you with your journey.. I have to say doctors piss me off!!!!

She presented symptoms and they were more or less dismissed. Doctors need to listen to their female patients. It's not "anxiety" or "PMS" or whatever females get stereotyped with. If she was diagnosed early she might be here today. So tragic.

Most of us that clicked the like button here didn't do it because we're happy that she has cancer but to acknowledge that we appreciate her making the video and sharing her journey with us.
That said, yes there are always people in the world, (especially on social media where they're anonymous), that are simply mean.

But some people will think like Facebook, so click the dislike, meaning they don't like the subject, and aren't being nasty. I’ve had it for approx 20 years. Doctors have never really been able to pinpoint what exactly is wrong with my throat or why I can’t swallow. It ranges from acid reflux to allergies to certain proteins in food. I really wanted to thank this lady for dedicating some of her time to helping others, but sadly as I read the comments I was struck with sorrow. My mom had esophageal cancer. Her wonderful doctor saw some bloodwork numbers that indicated she was losing blood somewhere. In his older patients, Mom was 70, he always went looking for the source, and found the tumor with endoscopy. It was caught early and we were quite hopeful. I would also like to add that it sounded like those doctors were really caring. It’s not that they were “playing with her life” because they didn’t find it right away in a young woman with no risk factors. I am a nurse and work frequently with cancer patients like her. Given her age, symptoms, and lack of risk factors I would have suspected the same thing they did. Their diagnostic process makes sense and these thing are not clear cut. Stop saying stuff like that when they don’t get to a diagnosis instantly! THAT IS NOT HOW MEDICINE WORKS AT ALL. I have worked with some horrendous doctors and that is not “uncaring” it’s literally just the process. Medicine is complicated.

I am in school becoming a medical provider, and the first thing they teach you is, "Think horses, not zebras." The second thing they teach you is, "If you are still thinking zebras, how close are you to the zoo?" All of that means, think of the more common things first. It's almost always something common just presenting a little differently, not some crazy diagnosis. That second part means, if you're still thinking about that crazy diagnosis, how likely is it for THAT patient. Do they have risk factors? You cannot always assume the worst for patients, and run a million tests on every single patient that presents with something strange. Tests are expensive, have side effects, and are not always safe. "The number one contraindication to any test is not needing it in the first place." -another thing preached in school. Things happen, zebras DO exist, and unfortunately they can be missed or diagnosed too late. That's awful, and as a provider there is no worse feeling in the world than missing the diagnosis and having that affect your patient. But medicine is not perfect. We do our best, try to make educated decisions based off of our education and clinical experience, and that's the best we can do. I'm so sorry if that wasn't enough. But I promise, it's not a lack of care.

Prayers for you, I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2012. I was 26 I had a 11 pound cancerous Germ Cell tumor. The first doctor diagnosed me with Constipation. When me and my mom were leaving the nurse told us that we should go to the ER for a second opinion. She new something wasn’t right because my BP was extremely high. I’m thankful we listened to the nurse because when we arrived at the ER my BP was 210/168. They took me straight back and ran all kinds of tests. The doctor told me I hade a huge tumor, I was in kidney failure and I need to be transplanted to the trauma center. When I got there I hade emergency to remove the tumor. The doctors told my parents I got to the ER just in time or I would not be here today. I’m in remission but I have long term side effects from the chemo. Most of my time is spent at the doctors. Doctors need to take us more seriously no matter how old we are. I’ve had to many doctors tell me theirs nothing wrong with me because I’m to young or It’s all in my head. If doctors would start talking people more seriously and do all the necessary tests to rule out any medical conditions. Then maybe cancer would be caught early.

Thanks for putting your video out there. My name is Mark, and I have recently been diagnosed with esophageal cancer also. Feb 11 2019 to be exact. I really think someone should have done proper testing a long time ago. My first symptoms back in mid May 2018 were, I would have a slight burp, then a slight chest pain would slowly come in, hang there for a couple seconds, then go away. As time went on, this would happen more often, with gradually worse chest pains and upper back discomfort. This may have been the GERD. Eventually the chest pains were getting pretty bad, especially when I wake up in the middle of the night. The chest pains got bad, but didn't really hang around for very long usually. I seen a clinic around July 18 2018 about the chest pains etc. We did all the blood tests etc. and the Dr. referred me to a cardiologist, and we were to go from there. The blood work looked ok as far as cancer, however I did have high cholesterol. I was referred to a cholesterol course, which took place Nov 20. By early Oct 2018, I started to have the problem of food getting stuck in my chest area, and pain full swallowing (dysphagia). Chest pains still there as bad as ever and dysphagia, I decided to go back to the clinic end of Oct to mention my new symptoms, as I was still waiting to hear from the cardiologists. I requested to see the same doctor that I seen in July, but they sent me to a different guy instead. I explained to him the history of my symptoms and steps I have taken so far. He asks me what is your anxiety? I told him, I had none. Eventually he asks me what I think it was. I said, I'm not sure, but it COULD be cancer. Then I explained to him how my dad died at an early age of cancer. He goes to his computer and looked up some kind of fancy scientific name for anxiety, and he told me that is what I had. He said I have anxiety because of my dad dying a long time ago. (I know I had no anxiety on this, CONCERN, yes, but not anxiety. He told me to just wait until after I see the cardiologist and then we can go from there. He did at one point mention, he did not think it was a cardiology type problem and could be esophageal if anything. I didn't have anxiety, however, if I did, I think that some kind of esophageal test should have been done. Anyway, decided to wait for a while longer in hopes we can get this cardiologist thing out of the way. December 4ish, cardiologist phones and asks me a bunch of questions over the phone. To them it sounded like GERD, however they said they would get back to me. Early January 2019, the GF is getting tired of me waiting around and books me an appointment with her family doctor. Seen the doctor Jan 14, sent me for Barium x rays. Jan 18 she notifies me of a 8cm long tumor in my esophagus which could be either benign or cancerous. Jan 21 2019 CT scan. Feb 6 2019 gastroscopy and biopsy of the tumor for malignancy. Feb 11 2019, Yip, its cancer. Wait, wait, wait, got a consultation appointment for Feb 25 2019 with a Cardiothoracic Surgeon in a couple days from now, also booked in for a PET Scan for Mar 7 2019, to find out what stage, (I can only imagine). I think this waiting around just might get me eventually. I know this is a long comment, but it really could help someone. I did not find this kind of info about my symptoms in the early stages. Oh, by the way, the Cardiologist office phoned me Jan 21 to book me in for an appointment on Jan 25. I told them I no longer need their services as it is a tumor. That was pretty much a 6 month wait. Anyway, really plan to do battle on this thing as soon as things get started, I have drastically changed the eating habits.

Hi Mark, I am soooo so so very sorry for your journey so far. I am hoping and crossing fingers and praying for you that you don't have any metastasis like me. Nonetheless, and regardless of whether or not you do you are right: lets battle this! We can do it and I so appreciate your super long comment. I agree it should help someone else. I wish so much that I had seen a comment like yours when I was crying over the sink/bin/toilet (after dysphasia) when someone would figure out what was wrong. I think it is remarkable that in your case too they gave it the anxiety label. It seems to be the go to for stuff that isn't clear and to avoid expensive tests. Then again how expensive is a test compared to the long treatments we go through, and the life altering craziness? I think there is a lot wrong with how diagnostics work, and I just wish that in 2018, when I started having a gut feeling (that is all, I had no symptoms) I would have taken myself for a private CT test just to calm the voice in my head. I didn't and I wish I had because without question it was already there. Anyhow, back to you: I am glad you are also tackling your diet. I have as well. I was always healthy but did have a 5 year period of not-so-healthy life (not just diet, but also lifestyle, sleep, work, etc). Cancer, I believe, is a very multi faceted issue and when people tackle a lot of areas in their lives at once, they seem to do better and live longer. Again, let's do this together. I know we can! contact me anytime you want to talk, vent, or discuss treatment options. I've discovered we are our own best doctors.

I hope all is going well with you too. I never realized that there was so much waiting in between tests and meetings with doctors etc. I guess I'm not the only one with issues. I had my consultation with the doctor yesterday. He didn't really tell me anything that I didn't already know, however I am now referred to a cancer clinic for once my PET scan is done. That is one thing he told me, if it hasn't spread, it would be chemo and radiation for two months, then one month wait, then surgery possibly. I like to keep positive, however, if I were to bet money on this thing, I would say it has probably spread, just because it has been with me for so long. I also like to be prepared. I don't have much fear, although I have had my moments. Just thought I would give you a little update. I really hope things are going well for you still. This is my concern. This is wild. I don't hope I don't have cancer. I cant figure out what my problem is. I went to my dentist and oral surgeon last week to be evaluated about my recent dark spot in my mouth that has appeared again after years. The oral surgeon offered me a biopsy, and he said it would cost over $1,000 with my insurance. I had so many health problems since 2008 when I graduated high school. As for the month and throat problem, the roof palate of my mouth turned dark brown/black in 2017 or 2018. I had a black doctor at the time. He told me nothing was wrong with my mouth and black people have darker gums. He ignored my symptoms. Months and years later, my tonsils have been completely swollen and they never went down. The back of my mouth is always red, and there are small lumps hidden below my tonsils. I did go to an otolaryngologist (ENT) last year. He looked and immediately said my tonsils need to be removed. I still think there is something more going on. I have also been dizziness with vertigo since February. I have a neurologist appointment on May 3. My mouth and throat has been red and swollen since 2017 or 2018. It looks hideous.

It's ridiculous the amount of times people have been given the anxiety diagnosis

ABSOLUTELY! been there quite a few times at one point in my life it turned me into a hypochondriac for years due to the docs telling me I had cancer. The first time I had Mono and no one could figure out for about a month so many antibiotics and different prescriptions only to make me feel absolutely worse ! Final to find out by a fill in doc that I had Mono !!!!!

@@king18722 Same lol it's like we have to go to great lengths to let a doctor know something is wrong with the body we've had our whole life. No one knows our body like we do. If something doesn't feel right it doesn't feel right.

What a brave and generous thing to do, creating a video will no doubt save a life. It is so easy at any age to ignore symptoms if your medical professionals are not concerned. How many stories I’ve heard of missed diagnosis, at the cost of the patient. I look forward to more videos and wish you all the best luck.

Years ago I had trouble swallowing which required an outpatient procedure to dilate my esophagus. Scar tissue had built up at its base from acid reflux and nearly closed it off. Knowing that this can lead to esophageal cancer, when I had my most recent colonoscopy, I insisted on getting an endoscopy at the same time to see if any of the scar tissue had developed cancer. Thankfully, the site looked fine, and a biopsy came back normal. Greatly relieved.
