What is CLA and Why Is it Such a Big Deal (or not) - Thomas DeLauer
So I know how much you love the unbiased science. So let's go ahead and talk about CLA, conjugated linoleic acid today. I'm gonna give you a neutral, unbiased breakdown that really allows you to make the decision based upon peer-reviewed studies, scholarly articles, and the honest research by CLA. If you haven't already, make sure you hit that subscribe button and also make sure you turn on notification so you can see whenever I go live or whenever I post a video and never miss a beat.
So what exactly is CLA? CLA stands for conjugated linoleic acid. Technically, CLA is considered a trans fat, but if you've watched my other videos, you know that not all trans fats are really created equal. We have biological trans fats, natural trans fats, and we have artificial trans fats. They're not all bad. They're not all good either.
When we look at conjugated linoleic acid, it's technically an Omega-6 fatty acid. Again, if you've seen my other videos, you know that Omega-6s are only good in moderation because Omega-6s can actually trigger inflammation. I want you to hear me out throughout the entirety of this video because sometimes, the right amount of inflammation can actually trigger a good thing like positive fatty acid oxidation. You see, so naturally CLA comes from the rumen of pasture-raised animals. Now what that means is animals that generally have multiple stomachs, so we're talking about cows, we're talking about things like that. Now the rumen is the intestines or part of the digestive tract, so conjugated linoleic acid is a naturally occurring trans fat that is in that portion of the animal.
So as you can imagine, when an animal is harvested, there is not a whole lot of CLA that comes out of it. You see, you don't get this copious amount like you would any other kind of fat. It's really kind of a precious commodity and we don't need much in the body to trigger the right kind of thing. Like I've talked about in other videos, you only need a small amount of Omega-6s to get the job done.
Now technically it's what's called a polyunsaturated fat. Now polyunsaturated fats are very, very unstable, but through the biological process of hydrogenation, of them becoming a trans fat, they can become somewhat more healthy and a little bit more stable. That's sort of the case with CLA.
Now here's what we have to remember. Naturally occurring CLA is a good thing. The supplements that we take that are CLA are totally different, and there is something that we have to understand when we start to talk about this, and it's a very in-depth science but what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna give it in a blanket statement and give you sort of the CliffNotes version of it.
When we look at fats, we have specific codes. There is almost what I'd like to call a fat code. We look at the carbon chains in how a fatty acid is made up, and we see multiple carbon chains. Now within those chains, we have what are called CIS, cis bonds, and we have what are called trans bonds. Now the amount of these bonds doesn't really matter right now. All that matters is the sequence of where these different cis bonds and trans bonds occur. All that you need to know is that our bodies have an ability to interpret and translate and ultimately digest a specific fat code.
If we alter that fat code through a chemical or artificial process, we're restructuring where these cis bonds and these trans bonds are, therefore making it more difficult for the body to process. So when we're looking at naturally occurring CLA, we're usually looking at a very specific trans and cis bond make up.

Remember guys, for every supplement in existence their will always be a negative review behind it. At the end of the day your body will react in its own individual way, what works for some won’t work for all.

This is a stupid take. Can you imagine this logic applied elsewhere?
For every Nigerian Prince offering money there's complaints it's a scam. So just send the money, you might get rich! Relationships are all unique.
For every car made there's a complaint about it. So who cares about the reviews on the Ford Pinto? I'm sure the explosions are exaggerated. Your car will be individual to you.
For every restaurant there's someone who doesn't like it. So who cares if they have 1.5 stars and people complain of food poisoning? Go try them anyways! Your body will react individually.
For every medicine in existence there will always be a negative review. So just take that med and ignore the rate of vomiting and internal bleeding. Your own individual body will react.

3.9 grams of CLA a day + 3.5 grams of L carnitine + low carb diet + 45 minute workouts 4-5 days a week has brought some good results to me with stubborn fat in 15 days. Do this for one month and then you can stop taking CLA. But stay away from Pizza, spaghetti, and burgers for at least two weeks during the one month process.

I was using CLA in combination with L Carnitine ( these were two separate supplements not some crap you buy that says you can do nothing and lose fat btw) while doing intense workouts. I definitely saw results faster than when i'm mainly doing workouts and protein. Plus the l carnitine gave me a ton of energy. The two together worked amazing! I guess just depends on the person idk

First off, I'm new to the ketogenic lifestyle, and have been doing research trying to get complete info that actually went in-depth enough for me for a couple of months before I found your videos last week and I have become a full-blown fan. Thank you so much for being so informative in such an accessible way.
As of three days ago when I first saw this video, I have been taking CLA supplements since early July. The first batch that I took I really saw the results, I was losing weight and leaning out nicely, and I attributed it to some degree to the CLA. About 3 weeks ago I switched to a different brand of CLA, and for the last couple of weeks I have been experiencing so much inflammation and discomfort that it was uncomfortable to move in the most basic of ways. After watching this video I stopped taking the CLA and noticed that I was more comfortable by the next morning and today I'm back to feeling like I have free range of motion. Thank you so much!

I just finished studying the paper he is talking about . The point I am gonna make is people who were part of this study were not on diet ie they were not asked to change the diets or their levels of physical activity. However it did say that they had increased risk of heart disease, diabetes and overall inflammation in the body too but they did manage to lose 7 to 9 % body fat over the course of 12 month study .now people who are dieting and exercising on a regular basis should definitely go for it during their cut because it’s proven to make you lose fat. As far as it’s side effects are related we don’t know if it will have similar results if they were asked to eat clean and workout along with it . 🙏🏽🙏🏽

Thomas DeLauer - BRAVO! An excellent video from which I learned important information, this time about CLA and why not to buy it as a supplement. Never had a good feeling about it. Since fish has no CLA, I'll stick to other means to burn both yellow fat (visceral fat) and white fat (subcutaneous fat).
This topic reminds me of weather or not to supplement with γ-linolenic acid or dihomo γ-linolenic acid for the neutralizing eicosanoid cascade. The problem found was that regardless of the anti-inflammatory cascade from DGLA, delta-5 desaturase still continues to make (from DGLA) arachiodonic acid-the mother of all inflammatory signaling molecules.

Video Idea: Supplement timing. Can the body absorb all the supplements we take at once? I’m currently doing OMAD keto most days or 18/6 IMF and for convenience sake I’d like to be able to take all my supplements with dinner. My concern is do the various supplements conflict or reduce absorption of one another.
My current routine is fasted morning weight training followed by ACV, Creatine, Magnesium, Potassium, Himalayan Salt.
Dinner Supplements - Protein isolate, Collagen, Turmeric, Probiotic, Vitamin D, Zinc, Omega 3, Reservatrol, Daca, Magnesium
Bedtime Supplements - More Magnesium (for sleep benefits and to hit total per pound Bodyweight you had indicated in a previous video)
Summary: Could I reap the benefits of all these supplements by taking them at once with dinner (fat soluble) or is their distinct benefits to spacing them out?
Keep up the great work Thomas and good luck on 1M subs!
***Started watching your videos a year ago, down 60lbs with some serious gains as well. Definitely owe some of the credit to you.

exactly there should be broader studies on supplements. like studies where people purposefully mega-dose the supplement. if there are no bad side effects on a mega-dosing event, then we know the supplement is safe to take

Can there be a strategic time to take it though?
For bodybuilders looking for muscle gain, inflammation is a necessary process for a growth response.
So take it with your pre workout meal, then later on in the day take some omega 3's to balance out the inflammation?

Do I need to change my diet when taking this? I am looking to burn fat. I already gym and am at 18% body fat. I don't eat many processed carbs. just cooked rice, rye and whole wheat bread, fish, meat, and vegetables and fruits. I also bike every day.

Quick question. I know BCAA’s break a fast, but i’ve stubbled across gamma-aminobutyric acid that potentially could increase hgh with 400% while you rest. Does this break a fast also?

I've just been doing research on this supplement since I was able to get a free bottle of capsules of CLA from Myprotein on my latest order. I'm currently cutting and I feel this could be a great way to help be on my way to losing that belly fat. I think an important distinction needs to be made between people who just rely on it for weight loss vs someone on a cut, eating healthy, living healthy and using it as a supplement. I think you could have also made it clear that the potential health risks associated with CLA are usually related to large doses, as opposed to smaller doses e.g. 1.6-6g per day. Good explanations on the scientific front, though.
