max hunter I agree. Ok a few questions, diet soda specifically diet coke doesn't effect insulin? Because I hear from Dr. Fung first soda can cause a insulin spike greater then sugar. Second the items in your ok list won't effect me achieving autophagy? Third is a friend started a water fast but with coconut water included and from anything I read coconut water has calories. So what do you think. Right now I do water fasts and if it's long fasts a week or more I do a dry fast during a water fast of a day. Thanks!
Hi Thomas, I was wondering about all my multivitamin say take in the morning. Is this something that can break my fast for example fish oils, magnesium, potassium, etc etc. Thank you
They can and will end your fast. In fact, some can even kick you out of ketosis. I personally do IF and a fairly strict keto. Every other day, in my eating window, I take my supplements. Give it a go.
The oils may break the fast but trace minerals maybe not especially if they are in liquid/ionic form but just a guess i'm not 100% sure myself. Just take D and Omegas with meals and the rest with meals you don't need them as your body adapts to fasting you load up the night before and get daily sun way better than vitamin D.
Multivitamins at least the ones that I have bought would be a no go, they contain carbs from fruit concentrates, and apparently gelatin carries non essential amino acids namely glycine, glutamic acid, proline, and alanine (I looked it up) so gelatin would be ok since it doesn’t carry leucine which Tom mentioned causes a spike.
Capsules have usually carriers which can break fasting, so it's better to use supplements in forms of pure powders. Omega 3's are basically fats, so can break fasting. Calcium, minerals - don't break fast (if in "pure" forms). Vitamins are often made in capsules with other carriers like fats or forms of sugars. Gelatin is basically protein, so if BCAA makes little spikes in insulin level then it might too.
The more I listen to Thomas the more I like and agree with his teachings. This guys thinking aligns with my feelings on fasting but he adds for me an educated well taught understanding as to why I feel these suggestions and recommendations are best for fasting. I really appreciate this guys knowledge and his presentation to explain and inform! Thank you Thomas! It all makes perfect sense to me 👍🏼
Dietsoda's do increase insulin. A study was done in men harvesting sugar canes. Some got coke, some got dietcoke. Both groups harvested more sugar canes after the drink, but the latter group had a major crash and got less productive. The theory behind it is that the pancreas starts releasing insulin as soon as the sugary taste is noted. The insuline lowers the (low) present bloodsugar because the body is expecting a replenishment. When the expected sugar doesnt come in, bloodsugar has crashed which causes fatigue and cravings. You could say that this does not affect the fast as long as you withstand your cravings, but it does effect the way the body reacts. The increase in glucose causes an initial decrease in glucagon which is the hormone that helps mobilize fatty acids and glycogen. Afterwards, glucagon will spike due to the low blood sugar, but you end up feeling pretty bad in between. This being said; Isn't it better not to drink dietsoda's? And another question: I dont like coffee so i take caffeine in pillform. It has a gelatine capsule. Does 1 really break the fast? If i take the capsule at 12, when i break my fast, i wont be able to sleep.
There are lots of new studies coming out that shows the artificial sweeteners kills different types of gut bacterias, and they are thinking that is responsible for the reason why people who consume diet things don't loose weight.
I heard coffee can raise insulin which makes the fat burning in fasting slower can you do a video on that and perhaps measure your blood level before and after drinking plain coffee? Thanks for the vid btw🤗💖
sara c hmm I’ve always heard caffeine increase fight/ flight and can become a performance enhancer because it releases FFAs for energy. Not sure how fasting changes this
Black coffee doesn't raise insulin, it raises cortisol, so technically it doesn't break your fast. Cortisol and Insulin are the 2 hormones that store fat & prevent fat burning. That's why there's a lot of people who recommend water first thing in the morning and waiting for breakfast to have your coffee.
Curious about essential oils and if they trigger an insulin response? I’m new to intermittent fasting and based on what I’ve researched so far, am thinking citrus oils would actually be helpful? Thank you for your time and great video!
Dr. Fung disagrees..... there’s 2 types of fasting (weight loss or autophagy) so....... you can do BPC IN MODERATION but for autophagy ZERO calories. This is because mct, coconut oil, HWC won’t cause a rise in insulin ....
It will just a reduced or blunted respond. Its not true that insulin is at zero when fasting anyway. It's just reduced. Even if you have 30 calories or so you'll enter the fasting state pretty quick.
Wezz - He’s not speaking, he’s typing, but I’d wager the audio version isn’t much different from the texted version. Give him a break, that poor Millennial is versus the whole world and there appears to be a long line of complaints.
Not sure this dude is correct. I just listened to Dr. Rhonda Patrick on Joe Rogan discussing fasting and she said everything but water triggers metabolic enzymes and stops the fast. She's a scientist and gave a pretty good explanation.
Incredibly informative. I had several questions and stumbled across your video. Your explanations are concise and I feel more empowered in the decisions I'm making during my IF. Thank you!
Interesting to see ACV in the gray area section. Even if there may be a single calorie in ACV, isn't there typically 5 calories in a single cup of black coffee? Which shouldn't be enough to impact a fast. Thomas, I'm wondering if you could make a video discussing the best time to drink ACV, in relation to controlling glucose. E.g. before or after a carb heavy meal? At the start or end of a fast?
@@chantalbaxter9126 Stevia doesn't have carbs. It's carb-free and calorie-free. If it's mixed with erythitol or maltodextrin, then it won't be carb-free but that isn't the stevia adding the carbs.
I've been wondering about Vaping. I have Vaped for 9 years after smoking for 20. I love Vaping. It has literally saved my life.My asthma has disappeared and I get a pulmonary lung exam done by my doctor every year and she says I have the lungs of a non-smoker. I do get juice in my mouth (called Spit Back) and I vape a lot. However I've been in Ketosis for a few weeks now. So I agree Vaping doesn't knock you out of Ketosis. However I feel like I get my sugar rush from the juice. So it's a win win😁 Also down 40lbs in 3 months. Am off Diabetic meds and my A1C is under 7😆. All my cholesterol numbers are in a healthy rangs now as well. Again thanks for your input on the subject.
I found this video 17 hrs in and I was struggling with just water. Now its water, black coffee, and green tea. Time to smash this 72 hour fast and reset my immune system!
@@yordanos2739 I just need to know what I'm allowed to do and what I'm not allowed to do in a 72 hour fast to get those immune system benefits. I was so anxious 44 hours into a 72 hour fast about whether I broke my fast or not I just gave up.
Thank u for including medical cannabis. I’m a legal patient and use THC and CBD daily. I’m coming to the end of a 3 day fast right now. I’ve been smoking and vaping my medicine, but obviously no edibles, so my pain is significantly higher.. sometimes on occasion, I’ll ingest some decarbed, raw cannabis. I checked online and it said 1 gram of raw cannabis is only 1-2 calories. Would you find this acceptable? Thank you!
It may be acceptable but I would recommend to go for shorter fasts as marijuana increases your hunger and I would recommend you to stick to the inhaling methods or anything that does not involve ingestion because 1 calorie or a 100 it will break you fast.
as a biochem/bio-science major I appreciate this info being consolidated into a concise video so I don't have to go all over the place looking for it. Citations would be awesome though, but I am a little obsessive. Thanks again!
Love watching your videos, you upload great content. What sugar free gum would you recommend for fasting. I am a weirdo about fresh breath and work around other people. Thanks for any insight you have.
@thomasdelauer....question, I'm starting a water fast but will also include black coffee, green and black tea, lemons, with my ACV. I guess my question is will L-carnitine break a fast? I usually take 3 tablespoons each day. Morning, afternoon and night. Thanks!! Hopefully I'll hear back from you!
Bummer! I was beside myself of hunger yesterday so i made some Coconut coffee this morning to feel less hungry.(I do OMAD in the evening) But it makes sense now why I am such a long time getting in to ketosis because I have drunken coconut coffee some days.. There is soo much to understand in the Keto diet! Thank god for TH-cam!
Dawn McKenzie I think he made a mistake there. He actually said it was a no-go, right? But while he said that, he wrote it down in the wrong column because that was the one he was working on.
My favorite non-caffeinated tea is Celestial Seasonings Cinnamon Apple Spice. The ingredients are: Cinnamon, hibiscus, chamomile, natural cinnamon and apple flavors with other natural flavors, roasted chicory, orange peel and roasted carob. I bet this probably doesn't break a fast. But I wonder what the hormonal impact of the ingredients is. It would be interesting to watch a video on teas and flavored beverages and their effects. What dosage of tea would cause a material effect. Even green tea is suppose have a negative effect on test.
velishan1 im 2 weeks late, but it may. Because from what i understand, canned tabacco like that is sweetend with sugars (for taste obviously) even though it may not seem like it to some people. That may make ir break. Just a heads up to look into.
Thank you for including cannabis in this discussion! As the industry evolves, so does the science, esp. learning exactly what makes us feel the way we do. Terpenes are found in ALL plants, and they are specifically responsible for feelings of euphoria, energy, relaxation, hunger, etc., aaand specific ones have even been known to suppress appetite. As a post-bacc Neurobiology labrat whom joined the professional side of cannabis a few years ago, it really is amazing to finally see the science behind this force of a plant. Caution on edibles:. Our bodies breakdown and digest the endocannabinoids in MJ much more completely than smoking/vaping, and take much longer to kick in. Exercise restraint and moderation when consuming. Remember, you can always eat more, but you can't eat less. Also exercise caution when medicating with concentrates- oil, distillate, vape, wax, etc: these are 'concentrated' mediums of THC, producing a stronger effect. I personally recommend flower to start, seeing as how you get the full spectrum benefits of the plant rather than THC alone. I could go on, but by all means if anyone sees this and has questions, don't hesitate! =)
Thomas, thank you for this video. I do have a question though about the use of the sweeteners on your safe column. When you mentioned BCAA's were no-go's it was because of the insulin spike the produce. However, when I was reading Dr. Fung's book The Obesity Code he quotes research that shows the artificial sweeteners, including stevia, spike insulin. And not only a little spike but up to 3x as much as real sugar would. If spiking insulin qualifies as kicking you out of a fast, then it would seem the sweeteners would be on the no-go list. Am I just misunderstanding what he was saying? I know that the key benefit of fasting for someone who is insulin resistant is to be in a prolonged period of time where insulin is not be produced. I've always errored on the side of caution and skipped them when fasting. But wanted your input, maybe in another video? Thanks again for your videos, I look forward to them every time!
Steven Perry That's exactly what I've found in my research. As a result, I slowly weaned myself away from using them, so I don't actually need sweeteners for anything. It makes my fasting periods easier and it keeps my wallet a little heavier, as a bonus.
I agree on the use of sweeteners and Dr. Fung uses human based research results in his book which I prefer over lab animal tests. However, I am going to guess you don't watch Thomas' videos on a regular basis because he does put references to studies to back up the facts he is using. This video may be more of an opinion based one, but his science and research is always spot on. I watch some other keto "bloggers" that quote a lot of "bro" science. But one thing that sets Thomas apart from these others is his use of researched facts and science. Thomas also has a lot of experience in helping others navigate their fitness journey, and more importantly their health journey. Practical experience and knowledge trumps a study every time.
Steven Perry the sweetners he said were ok have been tested on people. Some people get a sugar spike, some dont. Its a grey area. However there are some sweetners that def raise bsl.
If you reread my comment you will see that I said they raise insulin levels not blood sugar levels. These are two completely different issues. And if you listen to what he said when he said BCAA's were out it was because they spike insulin, not blood sugar. My comment/question was if spiking insulin was a reason to kick out out of your fast, then the sweeteners would also kick you out of the fast because they too spike insulin.
Milevskis Fitness. The study shows the augmentation of insulin with use of artificial sweeteners in the presence of glucose on rats. This is not really showing that they produce an insulin spike themselves, but rather increase the insulin response to glucose.
Thank you so much Tom for the info. I'm glad you straightened it out concerning MCT oil, coconut oil, bullet proof etc. now I can really hone in on my IF.
What would be your response to someone like Dr. Eric Berg, another foremost expert on fasting, that has a video that says that bone broth, ACV, and erythritol IS all fasting safe?
Y'all are killing me here with all the "not a real doctor" and shit. Listen to who you choose and see who helps you more. You don't have to be a medical doctor of anything to be an expert. Just ask Thomas...a real non-medical doctor himself.
yes plz answer this. Because i need to know if ive been wasting my time doing "fasted cardio". because i drink one of these before each "fasted" workout.
because of how Branch Chain Amino Acids are broken down, he considers them to be a "no-go". @5:21 - leucine causes an insulin spike to break it down. he speaks about it very clearly. very very clearly. lol
I think it depends on what your goals are. I noticed that clear chicken broth doesn't seem to really raise my blood sugar. I think i could lose weight sipping it but it would probably knock me out of some of the really neat benefits of fasting like autophagy and increased production of human growth hormone. It may well be that they are both correct but Thomas is just hardcore.
Does Pink Himalayan Salt break a fast? Also what about toothpastes (is a significant amount absorbed in the mouth, enough to cause a metabolic response)?
I have a question about coconut water as I usually have it before and during my weight training mixed with water (50/50) so would like to know if coconut water is a go OR a no go?
I was just going to ask about that, I mean he does say that it breaks a fast, and honestly it IS obvious, but seeing how he put it on the gray area made me wonder.
Yes was going to ask the same question about coconut water as I usually have it during my weight training mixed with water (50/50) so would like to know if coconut water is a go OR a no go?
Hello Thomas! I've been following and watching your videos for quite a while and I've decided to try intermittent fasting. I was wondering since lemon is ok, and water is ok, would it be ok to drink lemon water through out the fast as a regular drink? Or will the constant supply of lemon water break my fast? I know you covered just a tablespoon of lemon juice, but I'm asking about sliced lemon in water throughout the fasting period
Yeah, I was pretty curious about this a little while back so I did some looking around and it seems to be safe for a fast: th-cam.com/video/uFHENWooEe0/w-d-xo.html
27 of fasting and I just finished watching this to realize that I’ve been having my coffee with a little sugar free coffee mate because I thought anything less than 50 calories was good to go 🤦♀️
so a dirty fast which is different than a pure fast does allow up to 50 calories as it shouldn't spike your insulin levels soo much but check the sugar content on the coffee mate it's usually like 8gr of sugar which is much more likely to throw you out of a fast than the 35 calories coffee mate has
Hey Tom thanks for these videos. I'd love to know whether fresh ginger steeped in hot water breaks a fast. Also if liquorice and peppermint tea breaks a fast.
True but it is important to get electrolytes in during a fast because if you are going 12-16 hours on just water, youre going to be urinating a lot, dumping a lot of sodium and potassium, it is good to replenish those.
I should rephrase : remove minerals from there. Really only vitamins need food to absorb. Minerals dont require any food to absorb. Some Lemon Sea salt water in the morning goes a long way
Marco thanks for the correction. That's correct and in fact, historically we've gotten many of our minerals from the water we drink (and anyone who drinks well water still does)
Good video as always dude, very informative, felt a bit guilty for having a Diet Coke last night when I was in my fast but now you’ve put my mind at ease a bit. Been watching for quite a while now but I’ve only started to truly implement your methods over the past ten weeks. I’ve lost 12.8Kg’s so far. And I’d just like to say thanks Thomas for all the awesome videos. Take care, Craig.
Thank you!! Can you have a bit of honey in the tea?? And what about juice of ginger or even powder with lemon for tea and what about mint tea and herb teas like turmeric, cinnamon powders strained for tea. I truly look forward to hearing from you!!

The 1st thing needed is a clear definition of a fast. It seems there are now thousands of things people refer to as a fast.
It's like when you need a blood test and they tell you to fast. Nothing but water is allowed. That is a true fast.
Linda L a true fast is a og with no water either
at least 60mph
Not eating
If i take the capsule at 12, when i break my fast, i wont be able to sleep.
so, what about sucralose and stevia then? would it cause the same reaction because they are sweet?
@@KittyLovesGlover I'd say yes.
There are lots of new studies coming out that shows the artificial sweeteners kills different types of gut bacterias, and they are thinking that is responsible for the reason why people who consume diet things don't loose weight.
When I drank diet soda, I found it made me more hungry and tempted to eat. So I would avoid them.
That's why there's a lot of people who recommend water first thing in the morning and waiting for breakfast to have your coffee.
th-cam.com/video/iAv-1UHHjeg/w-d-xo.html
If cortisol increases with coffee intake, wouldn’t it be counterproductive to drink? I thought cortisol inhibits fat loss.
Curious about essential oils and if they trigger an insulin response? I’m new to intermittent fasting and based on what I’ve researched so far, am thinking citrus oils would actually be helpful? Thank you for your time and great video!
I have the same question. I ingest 1-2 drops in 40 oz water during my fasted state. Does it affect insulin levels/break a fast?
Dr. Fung disagrees..... there’s 2 types of fasting (weight loss or autophagy) so....... you can do BPC IN MODERATION but for autophagy ZERO calories. This is because mct, coconut oil, HWC won’t cause a rise in insulin ....
Hi Karla do u know if aloe Vera gel breaks the fast?
@mehazad rahman what ?
@Karla Maria
There's calories in fat you are making me laugh
It will just a reduced or blunted respond. Its not true that insulin is at zero when fasting anyway. It's just reduced. Even if you have 30 calories or so you'll enter the fasting state pretty quick.
The mct powder I use is only a half scoop which is 35 calories...is that okay?
Ground spices? Such as ginger, cinnamon, cayenne pepper...?
Bella Santana i asked about ginger he said if its below 1/4 teaspoon its ok
kick ass preworkouts i mean if teas are okay less than 1/4 tsp should be fine too i guess
does breathing break a fast? answer fast pls, cant hold my breath much more
if you breath from your nose no but from the mouth yes
Millennial vs. The World What language is it you’re speaking there..? 🤨
😂😂
Wezz - He’s not speaking, he’s typing, but I’d wager the audio version isn’t much different from the texted version. Give him a break, that poor Millennial is versus the whole world and there appears to be a long line of complaints.
..only if you're breathing while standing next to a Cinnabon
Does taking vitamins and supplements break a fast?
What about chewing gum? Which types are safe to chew during a fast?
i'll suppose with no sugar on it will not break the fast
i assume the ones with any carb or sugar values on it will break a fast
What about ginger? Like with your acv and lemon
Mary Nsaidoo-Storph need an answer ASAP
Not sure this dude is correct. I just listened to Dr. Rhonda Patrick on Joe Rogan discussing fasting and she said everything but water triggers metabolic enzymes and stops the fast. She's a scientist and gave a pretty good explanation.
totally with you there reniam
I agree, I watched the same podcast and I think she is pretty spot on about almost everything she talks about
Try watching Dr. Berg and Dr. Berry, they're actual MDs
Yes definately agree and she mentions anything with caffeine breaks a fast.
reniam female scientist lol a fake scientist who is just educated not a scientist lol. Funny people oh dear oh dear
Incredibly informative. I had several questions and stumbled across your video. Your explanations are concise and I feel more empowered in the decisions I'm making during my IF. Thank you!
i take a herbal tea ginger turmeric and 1clove of garlic. will it kick me out of fasting autophagy? also stevia? regards
CJ Sheets yaaaah... same with stevia, it's not calorie free and DOES have carbs. I think he's mistaken...
@@chantalbaxter9126
Stevia doesn't have carbs.
Way to go Steven 👏🏻💪🏻
Fellow vaper here too. 5 years strong 💪
Congrats!!! 😁
But what about tide pods?!?!
Kidding, love these videos. Keep 'em coming!
Does Xyla sweetner break a fast? Thanks!
If it's a teenager that's doing tide pods, then they're not breaking a fast.
Thank you SO MUCH Thomas! You are really helping me improve my diet.
Thank you Thomas!! I have a question though,
What pre workout supplement you would recommend if you are fasting and in Keto ?
Thanks!
I found this video 17 hrs in and I was struggling with just water. Now its water, black coffee, and green tea. Time to smash this 72 hour fast and reset my immune system!
Didn't make the 72 hour fast. I figured out I broke my fast brushing my teeth and using mouthwash. This stuff is hard, lots of preparation required.
@@PontoLyone no you didn't. If you were doing a hard dry fast yes, but you were not so it's okay. Thomas has done a video about that.
@@yordanos2739 I just need to know what I'm allowed to do and what I'm not allowed to do in a 72 hour fast to get those immune system benefits. I was so anxious 44 hours into a 72 hour fast about whether I broke my fast or not I just gave up.
Good for you!!
Lol what are you doing writing on Jeff Cavalier’s chalkboard? ❤️
What about cinnamon powder? Adding a dash with my coffee in the morning typically less than a teaspoon worth
Most spices and herbs are fine on a fast. Cinnamon is fine
Added benefit .. cinnamon can help with insulin resistance..
Ok, thanks ! 😊👍🏾
Can you please discuss what vitamins will or will not break a fast ???????
vitamins will not....by this i mean if you are on vitamin tabs
What about omega 3 (oil fish) and glycine / malate magnesium (capsules) supplements?
fish oil breaks a fast
as a biochem/bio-science major I appreciate this info being consolidated into a concise video so I don't have to go all over the place looking for it. Citations would be awesome though, but I am a little obsessive. Thanks again!
The dogs look so done with you 😂
Don't artificial sweeteners spike insulin as well but slightly
Love watching your videos, you upload great content. What sugar free gum would you recommend for fasting. I am a weirdo about fresh breath and work around other people. Thanks for any insight you have.
I hate to tell ya, but chewing breaks a fast. Brush teeth or mouthwash
Just stick with water and green tea during your fast and you might live longer
Water_Tea_coffee_AVC_Lemon
Ok noted
Dr Berg said creamer, mct oil and bp coffee don’t break a fast.
Bummer! I was beside myself of hunger yesterday so i made some Coconut coffee this morning to feel less hungry.(I do OMAD in the evening)
But it makes sense now why I am such a long time getting in to ketosis because I have drunken coconut coffee some days..
There is soo much to understand in the Keto diet! Thank god for TH-cam!
How in the world is a protein powder a grey area but yet bone broth is a no go? Protein powders should definitely be a no go.
Dawn McKenzie I think he made a mistake there. He actually said it was a no-go, right? But while he said that, he wrote it down in the wrong column because that was the one he was working on.
Bernardo Sutter I agree, I think he made a mistake in the board.
Dawn McKenzie he put it in the grey area because some do and some don’t depending on the ingredients.
Lady's Things you're stupid. The point is to avoid calories. It's definitely not in the gray area.
My favorite non-caffeinated tea is Celestial Seasonings Cinnamon Apple Spice.
The ingredients are:
Cinnamon, hibiscus, chamomile, natural cinnamon and apple flavors with other natural flavors, roasted chicory, orange peel and roasted carob. I bet this probably doesn't break a fast. But I wonder what the hormonal impact of the ingredients is.
It would be interesting to watch a video on teas and flavored beverages and their effects. What dosage of tea would cause a material effect. Even green tea is suppose have a negative effect on test.
Thomas, I hate to ask (mainly because I know I need to quit anyway) but does dip i.e. Copenhagen, Skoal, etc break a fast?
velishan1 im 2 weeks late, but it may.
Loved this video!..how about sugarfree gum...2g sugar alcohol
no go
What about, vitamin supplements, calcium tablets and omega 3 oil ? also does anyone have a recommendation for a preworkout that doesn't break fasting?
Raymond Williams oil I think definitely would break a fast/ not sure about vitamins and calcium I think it could all just depend on the ingredients
Hey there. Thanks for all your great videos.
Thank you so much Tom for the info. I'm glad you straightened it out concerning MCT oil, coconut oil, bullet proof etc. now I can really hone in on my IF.
What would be your response to someone like Dr. Eric Berg, another foremost expert on fasting, that has a video that says that bone broth, ACV, and erythritol IS all fasting safe?
you mean eric berg the non medical doctor (chiropractor)
I've watched many of his videos on various subjects and don't believe he is an actual expert on anything.
Fair, but then you have to question Thomas as they have done video collaborations together.
Y'all are killing me here with all the "not a real doctor" and shit. Listen to who you choose and see who helps you more. You don't have to be a medical doctor of anything to be an expert. Just ask Thomas...a real non-medical doctor himself.
Dara Jones so you believe the guy that says diet soda is safe?
what about vitamins in pill form, D3, Omega 3?
MrMixCro Vitamins and Minerals are not digested.
Munk fruit and almond milk? Teaspoon measurement in my morning green tea.
Energy drink name BANG has bcaa but zero calories and carbs, my question is if is a GO or a NO GO.
i think he means the BCAA's themselves will break it. hmm
yes plz answer this. Because i need to know if ive been wasting my time doing "fasted cardio". because i drink one of these before each "fasted" workout.
i need to know if ive actually been breaking my fast before i work out
He said in the vid, bcaa's gonna break your fast
because of how Branch Chain Amino Acids are broken down, he considers them to be a "no-go". @5:21 - leucine causes an insulin spike to break it down. he speaks about it very clearly. very very clearly. lol
I just watched a video that showed testing on heavy cream, mct oil, and butter. None of them broke a fast! So who to believe?
I think it depends on what your goals are. I noticed that clear chicken broth doesn't seem to really raise my blood sugar. I think i could lose weight sipping it but it would probably knock me out of some of the really neat benefits of fasting like autophagy and increased production of human growth hormone. It may well be that they are both correct but Thomas is just hardcore.
I did too. It was a medical doctor so I am going with that.
Heavy cream doesn’t break a fast I’ve heard
Does Pink Himalayan Salt break a fast? Also what about toothpastes (is a significant amount absorbed in the mouth, enough to cause a metabolic response)?
Salt does not break a fast
Use a water pik
I've been constantly pondering that as well
I have a question about coconut water as I usually have it before and during my weight training mixed with water (50/50) so would like to know if coconut water is a go OR a no go?
Just wondering: does turmeric tea will break the fast?
I think that falls under the category of herbal tea that doesn't contain fruit
Hey Thomas Delauer does Cacao break the fast? I like to add it to my coffee.
hey! have you seen any article with regards to this? Thanks
Thanks Thomas
Maybe better do a pop-up in the video regarding the error of putting Protein Powder in the grey area🙃
I was just going to ask about that, I mean he does say that it breaks a fast, and honestly it IS obvious, but seeing how he put it on the gray area made me wonder.
Hi, your videos are of great help. I have a question, does coconut water breaks the fast? TIA
Yes was going to ask the same question about coconut water as I usually have it during my weight training mixed with water (50/50) so would like to know if coconut water is a go OR a no go?
I looked it up. Coconut water will break a fast b/c it has sugar/carbs.
Can you list pre workout brands that we can buy
Hello Thomas! I've been following and watching your videos for quite a while and I've decided to try intermittent fasting. I was wondering since lemon is ok, and water is ok, would it be ok to drink lemon water through out the fast as a regular drink? Or will the constant supply of lemon water break my fast? I know you covered just a tablespoon of lemon juice, but I'm asking about sliced lemon in water throughout the fasting period
When he began the video talking about the dogs, I was like what?😂
Great information video. Does Matcha break a fast? (No sugar added) just matcha powder and water. Cheers
What about salt? Like a small amount in the water ill drink throughout my fast.
Yeah, I was pretty curious about this a little while back so I did some looking around and it seems to be safe for a fast:

In another video, Thomas speaks about the benefits of adding a little salt to your water when fasting.
27 of fasting and I just finished watching this to realize that I’ve been having my coffee with a little sugar free coffee mate because I thought anything less than 50 calories was good to go 🤦♀️
50 calories? No way! Here I was.....worried about my apple cider vinegar, haha
I do the exact same thing. The sugar fee coffee mate. I wouldn’t worry too much about it. I’ve been having it and still see results from my fast.
How much do you lose?
so a dirty fast which is different than a pure fast does allow up to 50 calories as it shouldn't spike your insulin levels soo much but check the sugar content on the coffee mate it's usually like 8gr of sugar which is much more likely to throw you out of a fast than the 35 calories coffee mate has
Give up the coffee and do a true fast to feel the benefits.
Shouldn’t the protein powder be in the no-go column? Like you said, it definitely breaks a fast cause it’s still food.
Hey Tom thanks for these videos. I'd love to know whether fresh ginger steeped in hot water breaks a fast. Also if liquorice and peppermint tea breaks a fast.
What about vitamins and minerals supplements?
Vitamins break a fast, minerals(at least electrolytes) do not.
Shouldnt really be taking in vitamins and minerals without food anyways for absorption, so theres that
True but it is important to get electrolytes in during a fast because if you are going 12-16 hours on just water, youre going to be urinating a lot, dumping a lot of sodium and potassium, it is good to replenish those.
I should rephrase : remove minerals from there. Really only vitamins need food to absorb. Minerals dont require any food to absorb. Some Lemon Sea salt water in the morning goes a long way
Marco thanks for the correction. That's correct and in fact, historically we've gotten many of our minerals from the water we drink (and anyone who drinks well water still does)
So if i inhale a dohnut will that break a fast?🤣
nah I think you're good to go
Stevie Lack you can't break a fast, If your dead...😂
😂😂😂😂
Don't look at it either lol
If you inhale like Kirby then yes it will
Damn another classic dropped by Thomas Delauer
very informative video. thanks for making it!
Very informative....I was disappointed to see BCAA's....as breaking a fast.
Does medicine breaks a fast?
No
Thank you!! Can you have a bit of honey in the tea?? And what about juice of ginger or even powder with lemon for tea and what about mint tea and herb teas like turmeric, cinnamon powders strained for tea. I truly look forward to hearing from you!!

What about taking a vitamin tablet in the morning? Or fish oil pills?
Yes breaks the fast
The gelatin capsules are made with sugar. Just research how the specific pills you take are made of.
what about zero calories and zero sugar energy drinks???
Excellent video..answered so many questions 😊
