    Fasted Training vs Eating Before Workouts: Study Compares the Difference - Thomas DeLauer
    This is the official fasted training versus non-fasted training video. What I mean by that is we're going to look at some of the science between what happens when you train in a completely fasted state, whether it's overnight or after an intermittent fast, or if you're training after eating some food.
    It's a common battle that's occurring on the internet. It's a common battle that people talk about all the time. Which is better? You get a little bit more power when you're training with a little bit more energy in your system, but you might get a better response if you're training in a fasted state. So let's look at the science, and there's one particular study that I want to reference that's going to break it all down and give us some clear cut answers.
    But the first thing that I want to talk about before we go into any detail on anything is I want you to stop worrying about if you're going to lose muscle or not. Here's the thing, if you work out for long enough, if you work out for long periods of time, yeah, you're going to burn up some muscle, but if you're training in a fasted state, the last thing I want you to worry about is losing muscle. Whether you're a man or woman, it doesn't matter. You're not going to lose as much muscle as you think, if any. The fact is you have way too many hormones that are skyrocketing when you're in a fasted state that far supersede the effects of catabolizing muscle.
    You have high amounts of human growth hormone that stop the breakdown of muscle. Okay? But the other thing is once you've been fasted for a longer period of time, your liver starts to produce something known as BHB, Beta-Hydroxybutyrate, which is a ketone body. That ketone body stops what is called leucine breakdown or leucine oxidation. Leucine is an amino acid, and that amino acid is at the forefront of catabolism, muscle breakdown. It's very simple. If we have leucine in the equation, you're not breaking down muscle. If leucine is oxidizing, you're breaking down muscle.
    In the case of fasting, when you have ketones present from a fast, it doesn't mean you have to be in ketosis, it just means you've been fasted, you have enough of this overall ketone production to make it so that you're not going to burn up that muscle, and you're not going to go into that leucine oxidation.
    So now that that's out of the way, let's truly talk about the difference between training fasted and training fed, and there's one study in particular that really took a good look at this. It was published in the Journal of Physiology, and it took a look at something entirely different from what we're used to seeing.
    You see, normally the argument for fasted cardio is really simple. It's kind of bro science, but it kind of makes sense at the same time. People will say that fasted cardio is good simply because you're burning through all of your glycogen. Glycogen is your stored carbohydrates in your muscle. So they say that because you're training in a fasted state, you burn through that glycogen, and your body has no choice but to start burning fat because you've already gone through the glycogen. That's a simple theory, and it kind of makes sense, but it's not the truth. That's not why fasted cardio is better. That's not how it works.
    So what this study looked at is it looked at something known as intramyocellular lipids. You see inside of our muscles, we have little itty bitty, teeny, tiny bits of fat.

    Black coffee and fasted training give me FAR more energy then any chemical pre workout powder I’ve ever taken. Ppl think I’m crazy when I tell them I’m doing a full body workout and haven’t ate for 18 + hours but the truth is my energy keeps increasing after 12 hours of fasting so I can’t help myself.

    Thank You, Thomas! Really appreciate your science based insights and THIS ONE hit HOME today! At 68 and 240~250ish lbs I've migrated towards healthy Keto over the last 3 months and am now hovering around 215~220. Trips to the gym began with light hour workouts and have ramped recently to longer and this week I'm enjoying 4 hour intense and exilerating efforts. Simultaneously I'm exploring daily intermittent fasting, sometimes OMAD, in late afternoon. I've experienced more desire, drive, and endurance when NOT eating beforehand...but was concerned about protein during my lengthing exercise window from noon to 4 pm (using strenght machines, elliptical, and stretching in the mega outdoor hot tub at KROC...going back & forth)
    I'd just started adding protein powder to my lemon/ACV waters TODAY, thinking this might be needed for muscle growth but YOU SORTED ME OUT BEAUTIFULLY...I luv science & data...
    Thanks SOOOOO much... I'm growing younger and luving it!
    And this works for me... NO BCAA's, MCT's, proteins or any other calories till I return home... maybe one small bottle of the above waiting in the fridge while I explore my next meal! Yum!

    I love how you mix my brain up with big complicated words and then explain everything in much simpler terms. I know when I'm learning things when my brain is totally like "what?" cause then even if I don't instantly retain the long words, you help me get familiar with the terminology of everything and then break it down so it's easily understandable. I watch all of your videos and the key is repetition of those big words. Then I try to explain it to people around me who are interested in these subjects and because I'm "teaching it" to others, it sinks in better. So all this to say THANK YOU for all that you do and please keep those videos coming! :)

      Thomas is a bit of a speed-talker, and human digestion is a complicated subject. A person really needs to watch his videos several times in slow motion to totally get a grasp of the subject. Either that or you can just do what he says.

      Andrea Ramos How are you? I'm down to 193lbs now, that's 37lbs in less than 90 days. I basically did 1 hour cardio fasted, then staying fasted I did 1 hour weight lifting. I only did both the cardio and lifting 3 days a week because I only work 3 days and used the gym at work. I also only fasted 4 days for 20/4. The other days I ate all day but stayed in a caloric deficit. Also, I kept my macros 15% carb 35% fat and 50% protein. Roughly. I used myfitnesspal. I hope that answers any questions.

    Great information here. A lot to digest and think about.
    All this information on the web confuses people especially when ideas clash. But you are absolutely correct to say that we need to eat based on our body type and GOALS! Don't ever forget that! Start by going to your doctor, and find out if you are allergic to certain foods that may cause inflammation and that may be decreasing your metabolism. Avoid those foods and see if that alone helps.
    Even body builders, athletes, and fitness models change their diet based on their schedules (competitions, photo shoots, games, etc.). During periods of high intensity training they eat a lot! They need to to replenish glycogen stores and maintain and/or build muscle. As they approach competition they may eat less and leaner meals to "get cut" and drop body fat so that they look their best.
    In the end, eat according to your goals and schedule and stop trying to find that "perfect" diet.. It doesn't exist.

    Your the best info on the net when it comes to how it all works. I am a 63 year old male, I used to train a lot in my thirties but really haven't since then. I have been very overweight, I'm 5'-6" tall and I weighed 230 lbs. I've been on a very strict and very honest ketogenic diet since March 24, 2018, it's July 24 as I write this, and I'm down to 189 so I've lost about 40 lbs so far and I owe it in a large part to you and all you informational videos, they're very inspiring. Funny thing is I don't even feel like I'm on a diet. I feel like I'm on an educational trek of some sort. I'm never hungry. I fast for 20 hours everyday. I know the next place to take this is into training but what can I expect at my age. When I was 33 I weighed 160 lbs and had a 28 inch waist and 17 inch bicepts. I'd like to get down to that weight now, what do you think I can expect?

Now down to 158 with diet change and more regular exercise . I have added fasting M, W, and F 31 hour fast each "day" I do it. Doing the fasting has really helped lower my fat %. I have not switched to Keto yet, but I also find these videos so helpful . I walk 3 miles six days a week, and work out an hour and a half as well, so start slow and you can do the "training " too. Enjoy your journey !

    One of your best videos yet, Thomas. Interestingly, the study quoted doesn't address consuming protein before a workout. I'm 15-20% stronger if I go into the gym after having eaten a chicken breast or piece of fish, like salmon. Not hypothetical. I've measured this with 3 different lifts across one year.
    One small correction. It's about glucagon. From Wiki: "Previously, glucagon was thought to activate HSL, however the removal of insulin's inhibitory effects ("cutting the brakes") is the source of activation. The lipolytic effect of glucagon in adipose tissue is minimal in humans."

    Of course it's not your fault that these kinds of large-scale studies aren't published yet, but I'm excited for this area of research and hope that it continues to grow and so really highlight the benefits of I.F. in an undeniable way.

    During the last two months I have been going to gym with my stomach almost empty. Having a meal 3, sometimes 4 h before exercise and eat only after trainning (whey protein). My results improoved a lot, mainly the fat burn. Then, I started to watch videos like this one and my mind blew.... =]

    • @larshansen7429
      @larshansen7429 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      4 hours is nothing, and will do nothing for you other than having low insulin and high glucagon. It's needs to be like that to burn fat, of course. But you are not getting the true benefits of fasted workouts. Try 16-18 hour fasts before workouts, then you will see major results ;-) We want that HGH to skyrocket!!

  • @merlincalo6877
    @merlincalo6877 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    So, for best results it sounds like it would make sense to workout first thing in the morning without food. If your goal is to burn fat & recover quickly. Now, if you want to workout out later in the day with the same goal. It seems like you would have maybe change the time frame of when you eat & don’t eat. If you want the same results.

    I've felt great training fasted with normal IF. But to test the envelope I started doing progressive fasts.

  • @rameshemv

    During my OMAD fasted workouts, i initially drag myself to the gym... feels like low energy..but as soon as i force myself to complete the 2nd warm-up set... somehow the Badass in me takes over and the workout turns great..so as far as lack of energy is concerned...its a myth...the body gets its energy even in OMAD fasted conditions.
    That was about Energy...all good.., HOWEVER, my strength..my ability to lift heavier weights seem to be going down when i am on OMAD and working out in a fasted state...
    Is this just me or folks out here with similar experiences?? Btw.. i have been on OMAD. and low carb for the last 2 years.

    • @miztergray314
      @miztergray314 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Me too. I was training fasted and I was dragging throughout my workout. I lost weight and muscle. Now, I do eat 30 mins before training and I can train more intense and I don’t feel like I’m gonna pass out during and after my workout. I still lost weight and but gain muscle. Especially, because I eat again 45 mins after my workout (heavy meal). My last light meal is at 6:00 pm, and I don’t eat until 8:30am the next morning. Good results but I’m ready to change things in order to gain more muscle without gaining weight.

    Hey Thomas! Quick question, does this video pertain to HIIT training as well? I've heard that fasted HIIT is actually harmful since your body cannot mobilize fat sources quickly enough to sustain the high intensity, so it mobilizes protein stores (aka muscles). Thank you for all the great videos!

    Because of my schedule, I have to train fasted every day. I train in the morning before I eat.
    2 questions:
    1. Is it important to get calories on board following a high intensity lifting session in the morning? Or should the fast continue until lunch?
    2. You (Thomas) have a large amount of lean body mass. All of this fasting and keto, how many calories do you take in to keep your lean body mass?
    I understand a large majority of your viewers are looking to lose weight, but I think there are many of us who lift and train hard and are not trying to lose weight. I was eating 3,300 calories a day during my 6wk keto cycle and lost 8lbs. Sure, I felt good during the day, but my lifting was declining and I had no desire to weigh less than I did in high school. How do you take in 3k-5k calories while intermittent fasting and when do you eat them?
    Thanks!!!

      Joe's Channel Yeah, good questions. Definitely interested to know. My thing is, I’m trying to put on muscle, but I do manual labor for 6-8, and some days 12 hours. Hard work in the Phoenix sun, cleaning 15-30 pools in a day. This schedule makes a fast real difficult. Work is like a work out for me, so then I go into the gym with what?

      Eric Rosales with your own will power, and also take good preworkout, especially when fasted and feeling like you jave no energy good preworkout works like magic, once i dry fasted for three days and was heavily walking at work, took preworkout and smashed my heavy lifting session, try it and you will see, but mainly is all will power

    • @tallywithme
      @tallywithme 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Definitely get some good protein in as soon as you can after your workout. Lunch time isn't too bad though if you want to wait. Try some protein isolate immediately after your workout. Never use preworkout/bcaa in your fasted training. Those two do exactly what you DO NOT WANT, they stop your intramuscular fats from burning and catabolise muscle. Use those fats for energy, don't stop them by using a supplement. Check out Leangains.com for fasting/training/meal times. He debunks all this.

    • @MrBurakOzel
      @MrBurakOzel 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1- He said that in another video "just get your protein and fats any time in the day no matter when"
      2- This subject depends on many individual factors. He's numbers are completely irrelevent as one may look like him and require less calories or vice versa.

    • @SkyeValentine6927
      @SkyeValentine6927 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thomas would probably recommend in your case to do 2-3 24 hr fasts a week instead of everyday intermittent fasting. Then you have 3-4 days to pack in your calorie needs for the week which is probably easier. If you watch his other videos, he recommends this style of fasting over everyday anyway, saying it's better long term. But it all depends on you. Try out different things and just pay attention to your body to see what works best. It is certainly possible to do all that and workout in a fasted state, though if you end up in a calorie deficit you will lose weight and muscle.

  • @sarahwest7812

    My body only needs feeding once a day at dinner time. The three square meal is not necessary. I work out "night fasted" usually mid morning alternating between resistance training and cardio (HIIT), I find I have the same levels of energy and stay in great shape. The body really does not need as much food and feeding as we are led to believe.

    Taking BCAAs or pre-workout drinks before working out in a fasted state may actually make you more prone to muscle catabolism because they'll kick you out of ketosis and blunts the anti-catabolic benefits of ketones and fasting.
