Intermittent Fasting: Why Women Should Fast Differently than Men - Thomas DeLauer
Everywhere you look on the internet, you're going to have someone telling you that fasting is terrible for women. They're going to tell you that your thyroid is going to be destroyed. They're going to tell you that your hormones are going to be completely out of whack, and that you're never going to recover.
Well, it's not quite the truth. In this video, I want to give you the A to Z breakdown of what happens to the female body during a fast, during intermittent fasting in particular. How often should a women fast? What can they expect? What's happening with their hormones and what's happening with their reproductive system? In this video, I'm going to take you through A to Z what goes on, starting with the starvation and the hunger hormones, leading into your reproductive hormones, then leading into your thyroid. Let's dive right in, and men, this video's for you, too, because it's going to help describe exactly what's going on in your body, as well.
Okay, here's the thing. When it comes down to starvation hormones ... we're talking leptin, ghrelin, insulin, things like that that we have to be paying attention to when it comes down to hunger and satiation ... women are much more sensitive to them. It's nothing bad, nothing wrong with them. It's simply a protective mechanism. It's not the fact that the thyroid's shutting down. It's the fact that the female body is recognizing that there's no food coming in, so they don't want to be producing eggs. They don't want to be ovulating. It's natural. Why would a female body want to produce eggs to stimulate potential reproduction if they're not eating, if they're starving?
That's where this whole thing starts. It all has to do with leptin, ghrelin, and insulin. But it goes much more than that. We're going to talk about what's happening with the brain and with the gonads now.
Let's talk about GNRH. GNRH is a particular thing that is secreted by the hypothalamus in both males and females, and it has to do with what's called the hypothalamic-pituitary gonadal axis. I know lots of guys that are proud of the HPTA, thinking that it only has to do with testosterone and their male bodies. Oh, no. That's not the case. The HPTA axis, that entire process, is men and women. And here's how it works.
Your brain has an area called the hypothalamus. This hypothalamus ends up secreting something known as GNRH. This GNRH tells the pituitary gland to produce luteinizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone. What these hormones end up doing is triggering the production of sperm and testosterone in men and producing ovulation and triggering progesterone and estrogen in women. They both do the same thing, just with a different end result. We still have the same catalyst, the same hormones.
Now what ends up happening is how women go through this process compared to men. Now that we know GNRH and we understand the HPTA has to do with men and women, we can talk about the precursor to the GNRH, which is where the problem really starts, and that's something known as kisspeptin. Where the problem occurs with kisspeptin is just with people not knowing what's really going on. Most of the beef in the fasting community and most of the beef with women fasting in general all has to do with kisspeptin.

If we all just eat a lot less, tons less, we don't have to fast. Humans do not need to eat every day and certainly not three times a day with snacks in between.

His videos look great and polished. But if I were directing a video such as this one, I wouldn't do cut-aways to cool stock footage of scientists and couples kissing. I'd put up a graphic that explicitly illustrates the hormone movement through the system and I'd keep it up longer. And I wouldn't put shots of him looking off to a separate camera which only interrupts our concentration. Show of hands... how many people got pulled out of the moment because of the side-cam thing? His videos can be better, much better. They really do try, so this isn't a knock, it's meant to be constructive.

Haven't lost strength, but did lose 30 pounds. Really interesting to hear that the hunger feeling is one to look for. I've been fasting daily for about a year now and I found that it had the opposite effect on me. I don't really get hungry at all. I actually have a lower appetite for food, feeling satiated more quickly. I don't follow a strict regimen, I just start eating when I feel like it, which could be anywhere between 11am and 5pm, usually somewhere in the middle.

The only change I have noticed is lighter periods and feeling colder during fasting periods (which subsides after I eat). Avg 1 day/wk I will eat "normally", usually due to social pressure lol. Overall, IF and weight training work for me!

Hi Thomas, I have HPA Axis Dysfunction and Hypothyroidism. I am ( at 54) slowly practicing IF and yesterday was my first time in my life to fast for 24 hours. It was awesome and I would have gone longer though started feeling 'odd' in my head so I broke the fast. Today I lasted 18 hours ( never been able to go longer than 12-14 in the past) and though I was not hungry, I began having lots of pressure and white noise in my ears and could hear my heart beat in my ears. I broke the fast since I don't want to stress the adrenals nor thyroid but I wonder if it was safe to keep fasting. It's such fun how I finally feel less Inflammed doing IF and keto. I appreciate the information about hormones!! One aggravating aspect of fasting is that whenever I went into a fast, at about the 18-hour timeframe, I'd start to feel my menstrual cycle starting up. Super-annoying, since it always seems to default to extra days on my cycle, rather than fewer.

So glad I watched this video. Thank you for posting such helpful information. I've previously had a Thyroid issue and I'm classed as in the normal range now, and I weened myself off the thyroxine, although I suspect that I'm still hypothyroid as my hair hasn't fully returned to its former glory. But since starting Keto and attempting intermittent fasting I've noticed I've been much colder, especially lower legs. Weight loss is on target but I think I'll make sure I have a stash of fat bombs handy from now on as my aim is to balance my hormones and thyroid, as well as lose weight. Great video!

This information makes me feel better.. about 3-4 days a week, I feel great eating in an 8 hour window. On weekends, I often eat in a 4 or 1 hour window... but some days I wake up and I just don’t feel like delaying my meals. It feels stressful to my body and mind, particularly before my cycle. It’s good to see so many people in the comments who have had so much success fasting daily, but I find it’s not feasible for me and it used to make me feel like I lacked self control. But Now I have some background knowledge on why my body doesn’t seem to want fasting every day. Thanks!

I went into IF *way* too fast, began doing 16/8 with fasted workouts...lost my period for 3 months, even though my hormones were ok (I got a blood test at a clinic to rule out pregnancy). I had to see an acupuncturist to get it back. Finally got my 3rd consecutive cycle! But I had to quit IF and exercise. Resumed exercise after a month, but I only do IF now if I had a very large meal the day before or something. I'll just skip breakfast the next day and otherwise eat normally. So yeah...proceed with caution and awareness. You might get great results, but beware of looking for the answers you want to hear, like I did.

Thank you for the video. I wish I had watched this sooner. I really got so excited to do the 16/8 fast daily and its been 8 weeks. There was only a couple days where I was feeling dangerously hungry (by my standards) so I broke fast because I knew I needed to listen to my body. I felt amazing when I started the fasting routine. I felt more energetic my mind was clearer and over all felt"lighter"! Though I've only lost 5 pounds. I'm not doing keto and I'm not doing much exercise but just starting out after healing from hypersenitivity pneumonitis. I was on long doses of steroids that helped me pack on the pounds. Now I want to get healthy and hopefully my husband and I can try for our first baby. Something to note since I started fasting is that my bbt temps for tracking my cycles/ estrogen hormone spikes are super low. My t3/t4 is fine on bloodwork but I'm hoping that my body will regulate its temps by only fasting three or four days a week. Hopefully with good results and still befitting from minimal fasting. Thanks again for the videos and God bless you and your family.

As with EVERYTHING relating to endocrinology, this is a convoluted picture and remains a very active area of investigation. As such, note that the functions of the kisspeptins (more than one kind) and even leptin remain perplexing questions. Stay tuned. See reference below.
What i would like to raise a red flag about is fasting for healthy (if overweight) kids about to transit into puberty (they watch and follow these diet trends just like us Olds). If the child has no hormonal issues they NEED a functional kisspeptin-leptin-X dynamic for proper sexual maturation.

I’ve been fasting 18:6 or 20:4 or even 24hr fasting and noticed I have been cold. I’m just flipping cold nothing shakes it, not frigid just a chill that don’t leave.
Been at it for 2 weeks and for 2 days in a row, I have broke it at 8 hours which has been discouraging because I have no problems carrying past 18hours. I have gave in to “I am going to eat” because I figured my body needed food or I wouldn’t be looking for food. I’ve wanted sweets, badly as of late, of course I didn’t eat them because I know it’s just a mind deal.

It is a little difficult to believe that a male can explain or know a females body better than a female! From what I've witnessed and felt - women seem to have a tendency for quicker and heightened anxiety levels compared to our male counterparts. Stress and anxiety have been found to have a large effect on our physiology and reactions. As mind and body are intertwined, keeping calm and in check with our patterns of thinking can help 'switch off' any unwanted hormonal changes.

I'm a 23 year old woman and I've been intermittent fasting for a little over two months now, most days 16:8, some days 18:6.
First month I got my period on time, this month no period, already 10 days late. I didn't even think that it might be the IF because in these two months I have become a HUGE fan and I love doing it. Hunger come and goes as my window opens and closes. Everything's going great, I've got no complains. I don't know if I have lost any weight or not, I haven't had a chance to weigh myself and honestly don't care all that much, but I'd say that there hasn't been much of a difference.
BUT since I've never ever in the past 5 years missed a period, I started to wonder if IF was the reason. I looked around a bit and read other women's comments and as it turns out, it may very well be the cause.
This is sad news, because I really love IF and wouldn't like to stop. Also I have a healthy weight (not too lean) and I have been eating healthy and enough and I've been paying attention to my macros and have been only moderately active. So I'm really confused. I don't know if I should stop IF, open up my eating window, just eat more or just go on doing it and wait a month or two to see what happens.
After reading many articles and watching this video, I'm not much wiser as to what I should really do.
I think I'm just going to eat a little bit more and see how it goes. I really wouldn't want to stop because IF has really helped me develop better eating habits and have less stomach/bowel trouble.
I just wish that I'd known this sooner. As awesome as IF is, I think every woman deserves to be informed about the possibility that it will throw her hormones out of whack and cause problems with her period. When I was considering IF, I watched tons of videos about the pros and cons and not once was it mentioned that IF can be different for women and that they need to be extra careful. I still would've done it, but I would've probably gone a bit easier on myself, given me some rest days or so every once in a while :))

I do have trouble sleeping when I fast, yes. I wouldn't say it's a sign of poor health for anyone, however. I think it's just a side effect fasting does, but it is not necessarily a bad thing. Some people really like the fact that they don't need to sleep as much when they fast. If someone, however, esp. a women already has low T3, indicating hypothyroidism, then they fast and their T3 levels drops even more, this could cause problems like insomnia, I was thinking. Thank you for sharing this video Thomas, very informative and good to hear how we as women can do IF in a way that won't throw our hormones out of wack. Until watching this video, I did not even think there is a link. I switched to Keto lifestyle about 9 weeks ago (down 20 lbs) , and have found my weightloss has slowed down. Incorporating IF a few days a week to see if that kicks it back into gear. Thank you!
