Tool is an American rock band from Los Angeles. Formed in 1990... due to Tool's incorporation of visual arts and very long and complex releases, the band is generally described as a style-transcending act and part of progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and art rock. The relationship between the band and today's music industry is ambivalent, at times marked by censorship, and the band's insistence on privacy....Tool has won four Grammy Awards, performed worldwide tours, and produced albums topping the charts in several countries.

The Moon's light is not its own, rather a reflection that we are seeing.
Disposition and Reflection are amazing on their own, together I consider them Tool's masterpiece. I don't care what I'm doing. On the back patio with tunes on with the wife, or on a road trip, these songs come on and everything else disappears and I receive the message of Maynard's words. Always moves me, encourages me to be better than I was yesterday. Put all the things weighing me down in check, right where they should be. Great reaction Skullz.

“Ticks and Leeches” actually is a filler track! The story is that the producers wanted another hard track on the album, which pissed the band off. So they made one.

The producers were right and nailed it, Tool delivered :)

When the man I loved passed away at 23 years old, I had this holy trinity as well as Shine on You Crazy Diamond on a playlist and would have it on repeat as I slept. It was the only way I could fall asleep at that point in time, it subdued my grief just enough that I could pass out at the end of the day.
Tool touches so many people with their music, and conveys so much that is left out of mainstream music. Tool was part of my growth as a person, a part of my awakening. And I'll always be grateful that Tool brought me and my love together. Even if he was gone too soon.
RIP Cezar Lubelski. You are sorely missed, every day.

  • @ssmolen42
    @ssmolen42 2 ปีที่แล้ว +51

This song has one of my favorite metaphors of all time. Note that the moon does not generate any light, and only glows at night because it's reflecting the light of the sun. So as full and bright as it is, and as much as its light may serve as a beacon of hope to those lost in the dark ("resuscitates the hopeless"), its light is not its own. Its source (the sun) is bright and endless and without her we are lifeless satellites drifting (literally: the Earth would not only be a dead barren rock without the light and warmth of the sun, but it would drift away into the cold depths of space without its gravity).
Also, I've always interpreted the "we are all one mind" line through more of an Alan Watts lens. The heart beating in your chest is no less a part of you than is the sun shining down from above.

I say they have no clue how this sounds when you are open to it and see it live. 50,000 people sitting in silence while these three masterpieces flow over them is an experience you never forget. Even more odd was the power outage itself seemed isolated only to a limited area surrounding the caller and the studio. Coincidence? Maybe, but eerie to consider.

I dont use words like "favorite" or "best" when it comes to TOOL. this one(3) however i can say, is one of the more meaningful and emotion-provoking experiences ive had in my TOOL journey. it has very personal and special meaning in my journey through life. i have always suffered from a lack of emotional development due to abuse i suffered when i was young. discovering TOOL in 1992 was a pathway to my redemption (without knowing it at the time). its interesting looking back how each TOOL album rhymed with my state through some kind of twisted recovery . i was angry and lashed out at the world (Opiate / Undertow), i became introverted about my own identity and decided to grow past my sum of experiences and emerge as something new from my ashes (AEnima), i found strength in a newfound spirituality and life view and expanded my gaze outward and embraced my own existence and celebrated each breath (Lateralus), I took on a more adult point of view of the world around me and began to accept my place in life (10,000 days), and now ive mastered my emotions and dealt with my past through spiritual growth and intellectual acceptance of the universe for all its good and bad. i credit TOOL in whatever form it holds in my soul as an initial catalyst for my recovery from myself. anyways......blah blah blah..................screw it, TOOL is my favorite

Now that you're done with this album, I'll tell you the greatest story of why this album is the best Tool album. It's a bit long, but who cares.
My best friend got married years ago. They seemed pretty happy (in my mind). I hear from him later that she has been partying and cheating on him. He had adopted her child and they had one of they're own together. She just up and left after she was caught.
He fell apart at this point. I didn't find out til later, he put a shotgun in his mouth, and pulled the trigger. By the grace of God (and the Magic of Tool), the shell didn't go off.
After this, He went to a large bridge in Jacksonville, put his wedding ring on the useless shell, and threw it off the bridge.
He told me this album was what got him through all the angst and pain he was dealing with.
Just think about the progression of the songs.
"The Grudge" Yeah I'm pissed, but Let it go.
"The Patient" Be patient, let things come to you.
"Schism" Don't let communication break down.
"Parabol/Parabola" All this pain is an illusion.
"Lateralus" Just let go. What happens, happens.
"Ticks & Leeches" Yes, she was sucking his life away. Almost literally.
"The Triad" A meditation to get back on thr right track.
Thank God for Tool!! (And shitty shell builds). I could have been without the best and greatest person I've met on this earth.
    Thanks again, Skulls.
I'm crying (out of happiness) as I finish writing this.

The greatest finale to any album, reaching the peak of the tree of life, this epic is about ego death, act 1. Disposition is symbolizing someone meditating and watching themselves change and everything around them as they go deeper within themselves, Act 2. Reflection is someone Reflecting on themselves and using the moon as an allegory, This person is in a space that the entire album has led them up to in this one moment, They realize they must crucify their ego before they pine away Aka wither away and be forgotten and lose themselves all together the ending of this song is them just barley reaching up to it then fades into triad, Act. 3 Triad is this individual finally reaching full enlightenment (the crown) this is the ego death sequence where the unconscious the conscious (ego) merge together with the self, the tree of life is complete as you hear the bass drum pedals symbolically making a stair climbing sound and climbing up a Pyramid in steps and then exploding into musical climax, then slowly fading out as the person having an out of body experience after the ego death returns to their body as a whole new individual 🙏 I hope you enjoyed the lateralus journey and can help you more than most music can actually do I hope you take the lessons within and apply to your own life and it makes you a better person, cause I know it did for me, cannot wait for the journey to continue for you, 10,000 days here we come haha 🌀

It has elicited different things for me over the years, depending on where I am at in my life..... And it has surprisingly grown WITH me. Tool though, have managed to create music that continues and evolves..... And in my darkest moment the moon tells me a secret.. this little light that I've been looking up to at my darkest times..tells me a secret, he says guess what bro as bright as I am, this light is not even my own it's just a reflection from this bigger entity the Sun, that we all revolve around this bigger brightness that without her were all lifeless satellites drifting. She is the one who resuscitates the hopeless. And he prays he can make it thru the night so the light can lift him up before he pines away in this dark place he has been hiding.
That's what I've always taken from this.

  • @Unlikely_Hero
    @Unlikely_Hero 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

The Moon was chosen because it *reflects* light, the Sun of course emits it.
"As full and bright as I am, this light is not my own" - he's speaking as the Moon.
Double meaning as he doesn't "own" (wasn't the creator of) his own light (animating life force) - he's borrowing it.
He references this light later in Wings
"This little light of mine; a gift you passed onto me
I'm gonna let shine and guide you safely on your way..."

Funny you mentioned that in Reflection it might have served better to talk about the sun rather than the moon. That’s actually what he was talking about. The moon, as bright and beautiful as it is, is not a source of light. Rather, it simply reflects the sun’s light, without which the planets and moons would be cold and lifeless.

  • @nickmagrick7702
    @nickmagrick7702 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

27:40 when Maynard says we are all of one mind, he means something more profound than we are just reflections of each other. WE ARE each other. There is no separation between you and me ultimately other than what our egos dictate. We are like cells in a larger super organism, everything on the planet is connected intimately to each other, and ultimately everything in the universe is connected to each other.
Where my consciousness ends and where yours begins isn't clearly defined. Once you realize this, you start to understand by fundamental physics properties alone, we are literally connected with our consciousnesses as they bleed into each other. Like our auras, or our electromagnetic waves and energy radiating from our bodies and others bodies into one another. What kind of effect does that have on the ways we think? Feel? On who we are? Ultimately yes, this does mean we end up being reflections of each other and even with our own free will we are products of our environment and we become the characters we imagine ourselves to be and that other people treat us as. But its much more than just that too.

When he's in his darkest moment, basically thinking he's completely worthless, the moon tells him a secret: the light of the moon is not actually the light of the moon; it's the light of the sun reflected off the surface of the moon. A million light reflections (of the sun) pass over the surface of the moon. The source (the sun) is bright and endless. Her light revives the hopeless. Without her, we're just lifeless satellites (i.e. moons) drifting.
Such beautiful lyrics. The moon is revered as holy by so many ancient religions. It has a mysterious power to it. But it's really just reflecting the light of the sun. If you're the type of person who can wallow in self-pity, you can reflect the positive energy all around you back into the world, giving meaning to your life, just as the moon's light is really just the sun's light reflecting off an otherwise cold, dead chunk of rock floating in space.

I really love how they ended with Faaip de Oiad. If I remember correctly it's an old recording that Danny had of a phone call to Coast to Coast AM sometime in the 90's(I think). But considering the denser subject matter of the album, especially if you lean heavily into the more pseduo-spiritual/scientific angle of it all it gives the album this heavy air of mystery towards the very end. A sense of wonderment almost in that the entire album has focused, led, and directed you towards the climactic point of having an out of body experience/astral projection, or what have you... And from this relativistic standpoint of being separated you would be operating in a similar space to the alluded "Extra Dimensional Beings" from the sample.
Although the sample has been explained over years as having been a prank call(again I think this is the case but I could be mistaken about the actual context) but in any event valid or fake I think it was actually an incredibly tasteful way to instill a bit of wonder and mystery at the very end... Also if you are listening to the album seamlessly on a loop it almost perfectly flows back into the Grudge(similar to how seamlessly The Wall from Pink Floyd is also a seamless loop).

Faaip de Oiad is kind of a teaser for one of the songs on 10,000 Days.
As far as D/R/T, I dunno why but this collection of songs never really did much for me. Not to say I don't care for it or I think its bad, but it just doesn't have a hook that makes me want to comeback for more. That said, whenever I listen to Lateralus all the way through, I always listen to them as they do make for a great conclusion to one of the best albums ever.
Great stuff again and if I can suggest again you take a quick break before proceeding to 10,000 Days and first listen to the Opiate EP; the entire thing is like 30 minutes long, so it could very well be just one single video.
There's also the Salival album which has a mixture of some live versions of songs like Pushit as well as some new studio songs. Its also relatively short compared to their full length albums, so again...it could be a single video but I wouldn't be surprised if you broke that one up.
So imo, you're next listens should be Opiate (1992), Salival (2000), 10,000 Days (2006), Fear Inoculum (2019), and Opiate² (2022)
I look forward to your thoughts on them all.

This whole album is about a journey towards enlightenment / spirituality. The beauty of it is that it can be interpreted in a number of ways. Here is some of how it plays out for me and maybe some of what was originally intended
    1. The Grudge is specifically directed towards Christianity and the anger that Maynard feels towards it due to its role in his relationship with his mother and his upbringing. However, he is ready to let that go and really begin a spiritual journey.
The Patient is very much how Skullz interpreted it. Just trying to make it through this difficult path of self enlightenment / finding God.
Schism - Now, this draws more from my own journey for sure - can be seen as the dissolution of the Christian church. If your spiritual journey starts with Christianity you look back at the history of what happened after Christ was here. The Eastern Orthodox church split from the Catholics then the Renaissance came and the Catholic church broke up a bunch more. There are all these pieces and they should fit, but by the end of he song there is lost confidence that the pieces can come back together.
Parabol / Parabola is a focus on what I do know. I am in this body, it is a gift, I can celebrate that I am here and now, I'm alive! I feel like I am part of something bigger. We are eternal there is more to this life!
Lateralus - Really starting to recognize human potential and also some recapping some of the journey from the beginning. Pushing outside of traditional ideas of God and religion. Embrace that we may not know what is coming, but we are divine. I can embrace who I am. We can swing on the spiral and recognize our divinity, but still be human.
Disposition - A changed perspective on life. I can now sit out and watch life without fear or anxiety.
Reflection - I recognized that I am alone in this universe and almost gave into the feeling of emptiness and meaninglessness. I saw a higher purpose, we can lift each other up and move on to a new reality. I can now see God in my own reflection and in everyone around me. Give up individual, cynical thoughts and actions and see what we are capable of.
Faai de Oiad - Looking for meaning in life? Maybe there is none. Maybe we're all controlled by aliens and lizard people.
Ticks & Leeches - Awesome song, but doesn't really fit with the whole thing.
Anyway, just my thoughts going through this album again. Thank you again, Skullz, for taking us on this journey with you. It's allowed rediscovery of an album I have loved and listened to a lot since it came out.

    • @richardkasden
      @richardkasden ปีที่แล้ว +2

I added this comment to the main thread in response to him not getting how Ticks & Leaches fits in the journey. When I read your comment, which I really loved by the way, I thought I'd share with you how Ticks & Leaches DOES fit with the album.
      --------------------------------
Ticks & Leaches is NOT a filler song. Musically, for me, it upsets the flow of the album so I understand why it would feel out of place. But SPIRITUALLY, it's an essential step in the journey of enlightenment. The album song by song is the journey of enlightenment and you're right, they are teaching their listeners how to heal. So what comes between getting into your body (Parabol/Parabola) and spiraling out towards enlightenment (Lateralus)? It's what you need to do once you get in your body...RELEASE THE ENERGY THERE!!!
Most people are stuck in their heads and dissociated. It's a journey to become an embodied human and once you get there, that is when you can RELEASE your anger, your sadness, whatever else is in there. Once you've released enough of that energy, then you can spiral out and let go of your ego (Triad). Ticks & Leaches IS that release!!! So it is NOT a filler song, it is an ESSENTIAL song!!!
Kudos to you for this incredible dive into this album. I'm really impressed by how much you got from a single listen. This is my favorite album of all time and will always be. It's been a while since I've sat with it, thanks for bringing it back to me!!!

@@Aaronsolnelson It absolutely is!!! You gotta get that bile out of you. When we're young and experienced trauma we were not developed enough to process those difficult emotions so the body just stores them. Those emotions then subconsciously become part of our inner filters, effecting how we see, experience and react to the world. We MUST release those emotions if we are ever going to be fully engaged with our authenticity and free from the past.

It's important to recognize that part of the song after the moon is brought up is said BY THE MOON. She is telling our narrator her secret.
"As full and bright as I am
this light is not my own and a million light reflections pass over me. Its source is bright and endless. She resuscitates the hopeless. Without her, we are lifeless satellites drifting."
The moon is talking about the sun (and other stars) and how it is the source of all life.
Of course the metaphorical meaning here is like you said. All of us reflect on others and are reflected upon by others. Also, with this song mentioning "crucify the ego", the reflection part is highly important. None of us are alone, and none of us are an entity unto itself. We are all the product of the things around us and the people we interact with. None of us get where we are by ourselves. Those around us help to shape us. And we all depend on each other.

For this reason, I am much more into Aenima than I am into Lateralus. If Im ever on mushrooms and I need the perfect soundtrack, Ill reach for Lateralus and Darkside. If my life is on shaky ground, Im being consumed by generational trauma, and Im trying to heal my past to fortify my future, I will take The Wall and Aenima. I scrolled down and saw somebody kind of touched on Faaip de Oiad. It is a clip from Art Bell Coast to Coast AM. They took this guys live call and he frantically told this story about his knowledge of aliens and area 51 and he feared for his life and feared for the whole human race. Maybe coincidence, maybe not but the satellite actually dropped the radio feed during the call and they lost the caller. 17 whole years later a guy called another show and claimed he was the caller and it was a hoax. Can't prove that he is, can't prove that he isn't. Weird stuff. Art Bell said after the call, “Weird, weird, weird stuff. In all my life . . . . My uplink transmitter was dead as a doornail.” and “That’s beyond coincidence. It was done to you.”

It is extremely difficult to name a best song by TOOL, but in my opinion, Reflection notches the top spot for me. Album version only. It is not their best song live.

It’s not a ball dropping it’s actually Danny bouncing his drumstick on a tom

Btw the bouncing sound at the end of disposition is Danny letting the stick bounce on the drum

nah, the moon, as its own light is a reflection. that's the secret the moon is saying... "this light is not my own". the pull my head out also goes with the moon, as it's associated with "the feminine" and birth. sort of a continuation of, as you observed, in lateralus

Quick comment about the moon. It has no light of its own. It can only reflect the sun's light.

I love how we are compared to the moon in Reflection. As beautiful as the moon is, it’s light is not it’s own. There is something greater in all of us as one mind. And just as Maynard says so much with so little, I feel the same about Adam. He’s not known as a guitar shredder but he does so much more with fewer chords. God tier masters of their craft.

9:20 its not a ball, its a really wet drum. I don't play instruments regularly so I have no idea what the name of it is but I definitely know the instrument by sound.

The moon doesn't emmit light. The only reason it looks bright in the sky is because it reflects the sun's light back to us.

The Moon definitely represents the Divine Feminine, hence why he refers to her as "she".... And she reflects that divine feminine in all of us and everything. The universe and everything in it is Duality. The Sun represents the Divine masculine and without him we cannot see Her and without them both we cannot see each other. Both illuminate and reflect the duality in all of us. Each side of our duality has purpose. The feminine aspect tends to be introspective, reflective, contemplative, the masculine more outward, impulsive (in a good way), explosive. They balance each other. His choice for the Moon in this song, is indeed perfect.
