  • Skullz reacts to Chocolate Chip Trip, 7empest, and Mockingbeat by Tool for the first time
Tool is an American rock band from Los Angeles. Formed in 1990... due to Tool's incorporation of visual arts and very long and complex releases, the band is generally described as a style-transcending act and part of progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and art rock. The relationship between the band and today's music industry is ambivalent, at times marked by censorship, and the band's insistence on privacy....Tool has won four Grammy Awards, performed worldwide tours, and produced albums topping the charts in several countries.

I feel like Tempest is all the riffs Adam saved up for 14 years being unleashed at once. It’s definitely Adams moment to showcase his unbelievable sound. That’s not to take away from the other band members who are also amazing in this song. This is a masterpiece of epic proportions. I guess it’s fitting as a tempest is a storm of epic proportions.

Be sure to check out any of the other tracks skipped over from Salival (No Quarter, You Lied, etc.) and The Witness by Adam Jones with Danny and Justin on board. Chocolate Chip Trip's name was from the cookies that were provided to Tool at the studio or place Danny did some recordings. Apparently the cookies were the highlight that helped get them through long days and so he named his drum insanity in honor of those cookies. Legendary cookies apparently. Also 7empest is a beautiful song that won a Grammy. Come back after so long away and drop a Grammy winning song. People like to attribute this song to particular people or situations but Maynard is rarely so specific unless it's about himself. Amazing song all around, every member flexes.

Their cover of, No Quarter! However, if you haven't heard Led Zeppelin's original do that one first so you can really appreciate what TOOL did with it to make it their own.

Tool's music has so much depth that it's always fun hearing reactions to it. Your insights have certainly enhanced my appreciation of some of their songs since I see them differently. I can understand some of their expression through their music. While I always thought the music for 'The Grudge' stands out in terms of how it goes with the lyrics, I can see where this is the case with other songs. Your comments highlighted this, in particular with 'Invincible', and now '7empest'.

    I wonder….
To me, Tool is it. I had a pretty eclectic musical experience prior to them (50s through 80s stuff my mom listened to in the car on cassette, 60s to 80s rock my dad jammed in his truck, 80s stuff from the jump off of MTV, Alabama to Zeppelin, you get the idea). Personally, I was a “classic rock” (Sabbath, Zeppelin, Eagles, stuff like that), “metal” (Metallica, Judas Priest, etc), and “alternative” (Smells Like Teen Spirit was the first song I ever played in my first car, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden)….
Then Tool. Totally changed how I experience every song I’ve ever heard whether for the first time or the 100th. It’s weird. It calls to me. It’s like my brain has been wired to say “hey you know what just happened? You need some Flood, or some H., or some Lateralus, or some 10,000 Days, or some Right in Two, or the entirety of Fear Innoculum….”
All music to me is now referenced to the way Tool makes me think and feel. To me, they’ve ruined all others. Not that I don’t still appreciate blasting Master of Puppets, but it’s just not the same any more….
    That’s me anyhow.

Thyetre's basically a "Tool without Maynard" track making the rounds, called The Witness, which Adam Jones composed to celebrate the recent release of his signature guitar tie-in through Gibson Les Paul, onh which he got Danny and Justoin to help him put together. It's purely instrumental, but it's still AWESOME.

A couple of good Tool side quests -
"Judith" by A Perfect Circle - This song is about Maynards mum and fits in between Jimmy and Wings for Marie on the time line.
"No Quarter" from Salival - A Led zepplin cover, have watched your other salival reactions.
"You Lied" and "Don't make me you're god" by Peach gb - Justins band around the same time as Undertow before he joined Tool, these two songs are bangers, Tool actually covered "You lied" later on Salival.
"The Humbling River" and "The Remedy" by Puscifer

Chocolate Chip Trip is 100% Danny at play. It's HIS song, and live he literally performs it alone on stage while the other guys take an intermission. It struck me as a little weird at first, but now I just love to close my eyes and call back the image I have burned into my memory of him up there - a giant with a joyful, little boy smile- just absolutely beating the FUCK out of that kit. 🤘😁❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥🤘

Ever since I saw your first reaction to Tool, I was impressed with your sense of awareness and insight. I've been waiting for you to get to this particular song and break down of lyrics. You did not disappoint. And you helped me see from a different "lens" I rather enjoy your "Ted talks" and think if more reactors could share their insights like that, the internet and the world would become much healthier for it. Great job bro, thank you.

Fear Inoculum was released in August 2019, the pandemic started in December of 2019, so unless Maynard is clairvoyant (it would be on brand) it is definitely not about "the jab stuff."

    • @mattstephens8887
      @mattstephens8887 ปีที่แล้ว

I think it’s about fear and either succumbing to it or doing something about it’s cause. So even if it wasn’t written about the jab stuff, it is certainly applicable to the situation surrounding the whole debacle. Hide in your home and be afraid or…not much to be done about something like that other than live I suppose…..
      JMHO of course.

I have really enjoyed watching your reactions to my favorite band. I was going to suggest approaching APC and Puscifer the same way, but it looks like you were thinking the same thing. You should react to Revolver magazine’s 4 part documentary clips on Maynard James Keenan : The Art of Work. I bet you would really enjoy it.

Skullz. It’s been an absolute pleasure. It’s a bit sad you finished it up, only in the sense you won’t be reacting to a first time listen. But it was inevitable.
On the whole being your friend in. YES. Absolutely YES!
I’ll keep my third eye out for the next video.
    Pink Floyd journey maybe…hint hint.

Hell yes brother, I've been waiting with bated breath for your reaction to this gargantuan album's epic conclusion. It is their magnum opus imo, and as much as I hope they continue making music well into the future I would be happy if they ended things here because what a perfect conclusion it would be to their masterful discography and the story of growth that it tells from beginning to end.
It has been such a privilege to follow along with you on your TOOL journey this past year. It blows my mind how much time has passed since you heard the opening riffs to the Undertow album, yet how quickly that time has gone by. I'm glad that your journey does not end here as you dive down the more obscure parts of the TOOL experience. One thing is for certain: this unique band will most likely have an emotional stranglehold on you for life, as it has with countless other TOOL fans.
Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your journey through all this. I feel like we have grown alongside you over the past year. I wish only the best for you going forward and I hope this band has brought you positive energy that will last a lifetime. Much love, live your best life, and as always continue to SPIRAL OUT!!! 🌀

The craziest part is this album came out a few months before Covid hit. Maybe Maynard is from the future…. Or maybe he ate the bat? The world may never know.

Doing this with your friend sounds really cool. It’s great seeing these things we love through the eyes of another…not just to see their appreciation but to see what they get from it.
You’ve opened my own eyes up to other possibilities of meaning within these songs, so it’s been a mutual growth…which is awesome.
A Perfect Circle, for sure, would make a great deep dive because his lyrics do go deeper than the typical rock album. I think you, and those of us that watch, would gain a lot from that.
Puscifer would be great as well, but if ai had to choose I’d say there’s more to mine from APC.
