Man of all the things to say about this movie, one thing to highlight out of the gate is the CASTING. Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawk are perfection. Without their chemistry I just can’t imagine this one working the way it does.
🤣 Ethan Hawke is a horrible actor in this and the shadow of Denzels performance blinds you to it. Doesn't act like he's high well, has the emotional range of a brick, and even the smiles and cries line is unbelievable. Horrible acting in this by him
@TheYeti6000 no, 100% accurate. I grew up around crime, cops, and clucks. The only accurate portrayal he does is when he's tied up at the cholos house. The rest, any basic bxxxx actor could have done
Fun fact: the line alonzo says to hoyt saying how “a narcotics police officer was killed today and was survived by his wife and son” the news reporter says that about alonzo as the last line of the movie
Ash making excuses for Alonzo, LOL!!! We're all so used to seeing Denzel play the hero. Edit: Did you catch that Alonzo is married? The Latina woman is his mistress & son.
See you actually nailed it early bro. Denzel said in a press thing that his own interpretation of Alonzo was a guy who WAS a GOOD cop whom the streets turned bad by making him think he can move an inch here and there bit by bit until he'd crossed the line irreversibly. "You got the magic eye."
That kid from 'Dead Poets Society' was married to Uma Thurman for 7 years and had two children with her, including Maya Hawke who has a appeared in Tarantino's 'One Upon a Time in Hollywood' film. (Lucky bastard)
_"This shit's chess, it ain't checkers!"_ is one of my favourite lines. Also, The movie works better without it, but there's a deleted scene where Hoyt talks with one of the 'Three wise men' at the end. It implies that Hoyt is not a rookie but in fact Internal Affairs. There are still hints in the movie that allude to it though. Hoyt's line of controlling his "smiles & cries" suggests he knows how to put on an act. He also disarms Alonso with the shotgun so fast that he gets the jump on the entire veteran team.
I saw that scene but they didnt say he was internal affairs or suggest that. He was a young impressionable rookie & if he was internal affairs he was a idiot
Antoine Fuqua's masterpiece and probably my favourite Denzel Washington movie too. This was a great reaction, the movie is full of the hood atmosphere, the beginning with the lowriders and Still Dre gave huge GTA vibes haha. The cast is also brilliant, Ethan Hawke, Scott Glenn and Eva Mendes were all good additions plus the rappers.
Another Denzel movie you should check out is Remember The Titans. It’s a fantastic movie, and growing up as one of the only black kids in my town it left a imprint on me. Felt like Denzel was coaching me. Love the content ash keep it up mate, cheers from Washington State
Al Pacino and Colin Farrel in The Recruit about a CIA recruitment programme came out at the same time. Another legendary law enforcement training film with the wily mentor. Worth a watch
Both Man on Fire and Training Day are great but my favorite Denzel action movies are both The Equalizer (2014) and The Equalizer 2 (2018), Denzel’s version of John Wick. Great movies, same Director from Training Day.
In all my 30 years, of all the movies and the actors I've seen I enjoy many actors as they are indeed great and some of them are legendary but there is one that I consider the absolute king - Denzel Washingon, that man has such a presense on screen such charisma and just enjoyable to watch and to act. My all time favorite actor.
Iconic performance by Denzel Wadshington! I don't believe any other actor could've brought the same level of realism and charisma to Alonzo, as he did. Also the purity and innocence Ethan Hawke portrayed as Jake. Even though they probably had a lot in common as rookie Cops, Jake was incorruptible
Denzel won a Best Actor Oscar for this role. Ethan was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his great performance. I would recommend Denzel in “Mo’ Better Blues”, “Richocet” , “The Preacher’s Wife” and “Antwon Fisher”. He has so many good ones 🔥🔥🔥
According to the director, when Alonzo is watching Jake fight the junkies, that look he gives him isn't because he wants to see what he's made out, it's Jake stalling Alonso's time to meet the Russians.
Without a doubt, one of his finest! - the script, the cast, everything was perfect - but Denzel just took it all to the next level!! Not gonna repeat everyones suggestions here (except to say 'Fallen' is a criminally overlooked gem of a film!), cos you simply can't go wrong with a Denzel film, genuinely don't believe that man is even capable of making a bad film!!
You should definitely watch American Gangster and both Equalizer films, because Denzel takes it to another level in those. Denzel, Ethan Hawke and director Antoine Fuqua reunite in the Magnificent Seven remake. Similar films to this are Street Kings, We Own the Night and End of Watch. The guy in the wheelchair is hip hop sensation Snoop Dogg and the guy with the pigeons is Terry Crews. One of Alonzo's crew is played by N.W.A. co founder Dr. Dre
That moment when you realize Denzel is the villain… but he is so fucking good in this movie, you almost don’t care. It’s truly from the Breaking Bad universe; you almost wonder if that WASN’T Tuco on a trip visiting his homies.
Denzel Washington is one of the greatest actors of all time. He absolutely deserved the oscar for best actor in his performance. I think you and Hannah would love another movie with Denzel called Fences. It is phenomenal and it's a dramatic role.
Cliff Curtis (Uncle Smiley) was in "Once Were Warriors" a few years earlier and played an ABSOLUTELY DIFFERENT roll as Uncle Bully. I honestly believe he did this character for this movie to redeem his on screen persona. (Warning, Once Were Warriors is one of the hardest movies to watch, EVER, and it was credited with increasing Domestic Violence Counseling in New Zealand about 25% that year, SUCH a powerful movie!!)
Some Denzel movies depending on what you want: Action : Equalizer, American Gangster Emotion: John Q, Fences, Remember the Titans Good story: Inside Man Symbolism: Book of Eli, Malcolm X Suspense: The taking of Pelham 123, Safe House
Ash, did you recognize Snoop Dogg, Macy Gray & Dr. Dre? Also, the kid on the couch with Macy Gray played in the beginning of Black Panther & THE GREAT DEBATERS" a movie Denzel starred in & directed
Somebody please make a compilation of every single time Ash says the word “symbolism” throughout the history of the channel, it has to be in the thousands 😂
Did you recognize Macy Gray with the long nails and the little boy? Lol.🤣 Denzel's acting was excellent in this movie. He actually won an Oscar for best actor for this role.
Great reaction Ash, always been a die hard Denzel fan, How can you not love this man😍😍😍..You have to check out Equalizer & Equalizer 2, Fallen & Virtuosity...you won't be disappointed, 🔥🔥🔥 Much love from the USA, Philadelphia💖💖
This was the first reaction from this channel I watched and this is my favorite Denzel Washington film. Lots of other great films from him like Man on Fire, American Gangster (theatrical or extended), Glory, Malcolm X, Equalizer 1 and 2 and such. But saw this back in 2014 as a recommendation from my mom and I've loved it ever since, but this is a great film and the twists and turns coming are great. The King Kong moment, great improvising with the line is amazing.
Same Here Thats The First Reaction Of The Channel I've Watched and I Love This Film. Was Never Notice When Denzel Played a Villain Also Ethan Hawkes Character Should Have Known Better From The Start
I immediately clicked on this to watch reaction, knowing that Ash was gonna LOVE EVERY SECOND of this movie!!! No BS, I would have bet every dollar and everything I own that he would give it 5 out of 5 stars. I would bet (a lot of money) he would put this in his top 10 (possibly higher) all-time movies as well! Without a doubt Denzel 100% deserved and won the Oscar for BEST ACTOR! Also, in 2002 Halle Berry (Monster's Ball) and Denzel (Training Day) made it the 1st and only time (so far) that Aftican Americans won both awards in same year. I put this movie in my top 10 of the 21st century. So I think Ash would as well. This is a very underrated movie IMO. I think it was a crime that it wasn't nominated for BEST PICTURE. The movies nominated were: A Beautiful Mind (winner) Moulin Rouge Gosford Park Lord of the Rings In the Bedroom I've seen all these movies and while they are all really good movies, Training Day is as good or better than all of them. P.S. "The Others" and "Memento" were also snubbed for a BEST PICTURE nomination in 2002 IMHO.
Denzel’s best movie was X. He absolutely deserved the Oscar for that but America wasn’t ready to reward that story yet. If it came out today he would sweep every award show.
The saying is “a bad apple spoils the bunch” this movie is the example of FTP. Even if you’re as good as Ethan Hawks character the business of policing will destroy any sense of soul you have. Denzel’s character is the demonstration of evil and temptation that most officers accept and contribute to.
_Fallen_ is Denzel's best movie, but unfortunately it's very underrated. You and Hannah definitely need to watch it. I think it's much better than _Se7en_ and I would even say it's my favourite detective thriller of all time.
the last lines of the movie call back the threat alonzo made against jake after he shot roger: "an LA police officer was killed today serving a warrant ... an LAPD spokesperson said officer harris was survived by his wife and four sons ..."
Dude! You have the funniest TH-cam channel and reactions. I laugh so hard every time you laugh. I imagine going out to the pub would be fun, with you. Subscribed!!! People aren’t like this nowadays.
As always great reaction my brother!! If I may suggest you some of the best Danzel movies(in my opinion) The Equalizer, Remember The Titans, Fallen(I personally love this movie so much)... I would love to watch your reaction for any of those great movies. Much love
Brilliant reaction mate! Other great *Denzel* recommendations: *Inside Man* and *Déjà vu.* Both from 2006. *My usual Recommendations:* ● *_The Fisher King_* (1991) Robin Williams & Jeff Bridges. ● *_Silverado_* (1985) A fun western with Scott Glenn, Danny Glover, John Cleese, Kevin Costner, Jeff Goldblum, and more. ● *_The Abyss_* (1989) Dir by James Cameron. 27:12 - Smiley's quote of "she's a civilian" shows that although he's a murderous criminal, he has morals...if you're a civilian...you don't deserve to be hurt... And Ash you missed it at 28:38 - "remember that fool in the wheelchair? How do ya think he got there?" Snoop's character was hurt by Alonzo in the past so Snoop's character knew Jake was a cop as soon as he pulled up...
Man of all the things to say about this movie, one thing to highlight out of the gate is the CASTING. Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawk are perfection. Without their chemistry I just can’t imagine this one working the way it does.
Denzel got an Oscar for this role
Hawke, not Hawk

Yep for best actor, he also had already won for best Supporting actor for glory
thanks for telling

Ash making excuses for Alonzo, LOL!!!
We're all so used to seeing Denzel play the hero.

I was a little shocked how long Ash thought Alonzo is a good guy. 😂
He has many mistresses and kids
Right! I think he was expecting Alonzo to be a good guy
@@sharpaycutie2 No, he wasn't he called him "corrupt" from the beginning.

If you loved this then you'll definitely love Crimson Tide starring Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman. Their performances were phenomenal 😇
Classic movie! intense!
@@stevenmonte7397 Yes most definitely! Brilliant supporting roles as well 👌🏾🤎
You should watch John Q. I think, personally, its Denzels best performance
100%
great performance but his best performance is without a doubt Malcolm X
Was really good as Ruben the hurricane Carter aswell
@@SpicyTurk to you. Like I said, personally, John Q was the best for me.

Never knew that, that’s sick
I saw that scene but they didnt say he was internal affairs or suggest that. He was a young impressionable rookie & if he was internal affairs he was a idiot
I remember that scene, they don’t say he’s internal affairs they just hint, the movie wasn’t about training Jake, it was about taking Alonzo down.
He disarmed Alonzo with the shotgun fast to show he was damn well trained from the police academy just in shock over the way Alonzo handled things.
Like the kids with the weed he was like are you serious. I went through stuff like that in the Marines.
Antoine Fuqua's masterpiece and probably my favourite Denzel Washington movie too. Al Pacino and Colin Farrel in The Recruit about a CIA recruitment programme came out at the same time. Another legendary law enforcement training film with the wily mentor. Worth a watch
I gotta second this. I routinely make women cheese eggs after they spend the night precisely because of that movie.
How can you compare that garbage to training day laughable

Jim Carrey could have played Alonzo better.
I think "John Q" is equally good acting from Denzel, but as a good guy.
Denzel is the man! But this movie wouldn’t work without the right Jake-Antoine Fuqua, the director.
"Hes in the upside down now" lmao. Great movie thanks for the reaction.
Blue is the colour, football is the game! Rangers & Chelsea are my 2 teams love you bro... great reaction as always my dude
I've seen quite a few reactors to this movie who all think Denzel's character is pretty cool in the beginning of it, but soon see what he really is.
The lady in the pink shirt whose house they kicked in is the singer Macy Gray.
35:28 Yes, Denzel won Best Actor award in 2002.
Mate I think you would love The Book of Eli. Cool under appreciated action movie set in an apocalypse

Ash is one of our own! A true Blue! Man already got the new kit.
Seeing Ash slowly come to the realization that yeah Alanzo is cool and all but he’s also a monster is basically how I watched this movie #symbolisms
Great reaction. That detail with the red lights is genius. True symbolism bro 😎😎😎
_"You in the office, baby!"_

I love how this movie had the real gang in the movie. Terry Crews was the only other actor that was part of the gang scene.

You will HAVE to do GLORY. Denzel got the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for that one. Also by Edward Zwick who directed Legends of the Fall.
“Look at the way I’m sitting “ hahaha
You're a Chelsea man, now I am subscribing ;)
Denzel on that couch shaded by the darkness telling Jake to shoot that guy is the ultimate symbolism.
Denzel won the academy award for the fiilm and it was well deserved. It also put Ethan Hawke on the map.
Masterpiece ever. Greatness
He won the OSCAR for this performance !!
Disgusting. He deserved to clean toilets for this pathetic performance.
Really great observation about the stop light. I never caught that symbolism. Well done.

"It's such a sick movie...He was playing us...wow bro!!!"-JT Ash
Fun fact Denzel's final monologue at the apartments with the King Kong line was pretty much all improv.
in my top 5 films of all time quality. Eva Mendes was a awesome actress :) I love that his saying gets used on him at the end and he laughs lol
Voted for this on the poll, glad you got to see it. Great movie and great reaction! Keep safe!
It's even crazier when you find out Denzel improvised like 75% of the dialogue, including the King Kong line. He came up with that on the spot. Crazy.
