"King Kong ain't got shit on me!"
Fun Fact: That epic line was ad-libbed by Denzel Washington.
Location Location Fact: The Quality Cafe coffee shop in the beginning of the movie (which was, incidentally, the first scene shot) is the same shop that was used in (but not limited to) Se7en (1995), Gone In 60 Seconds (2000), Ghost World (2001), and Catch Me If You Can (2002).
Law Enforcement Fact: When the movie came out, many viewers and critics were skeptical of the scenes where Jake Hoyt (Ethan Hawke) smokes marijuana laced with PCP and Alonzo's (Denzel Washington) explanation of how a cop who didn't take drugs offered to him on the street would be ID'd as police. David Ayer responded in an interview by holding up a highlighted section of the LAPD's rules and regulations; it stated that officers were allowed to use narcotics in very specific undercover situations and hewed closely to what Alonzo told Jake.

11:43 The "snail joke" isn't nonesense. It actually foreshadows the second half of the movie where Jake is the snail, and Alonzo is the man who carelessly throws the snail behind him - expecting it to die. But as we see Jake miraculously survives, and puts in the work to crawl all the way back to Alonzo's front porch - where he ends up beating him!

I saw this when i was about 17 and it left a lasting impression for sure. Denzel delivered one of, if not the best, performances of his career. Ever since this film he has been my favorite actor. Just so happens that he is an amazing man outside acting too.

He didn't pay 40 grand to kill Hoyt. The 40 grand was to pay for Roger's arrest warrant. After that meeting in the restaurant, "Nothing in this world is free...not even arrest warrants."

Denzel's character was based off of det Rafael Perez. He was the whistleblower for the whole rampart scandal and he testified that he and his partner shot and paralyzed a kid and planted evidence on him. Then I was watching this video and heard the line at 43:39 "remember that fool in the wheelchair? how you think he got there?", which I totally forgot about, and one of those "ooooooh" moments just happened.

Really think you’re off the mark and missing the point of this story.
Ethan Hawke’s character isn’t just a passive cypher to observe the larger than life of persona of Denzel Washington.
Ethan Hawke’s character is making choices and taking actions.
He makes a clear and principled choice when he demands to be let out of the car to save a girl from being assaulted.
And he makes a principled choice when he refuses the money stolen from a murdered drug dealer.
That’s not about him failing to be a “wolf”
That’s just some BS Denzel told him to manipulate him and rationalize his own amoral behavior.
When Ethan Hawke’s character refuses the money, that’s him making a principled decision, resisting corruption of his soul.
He is making the brave and principled stance. He’s not failing to become a “wolf”
The film is a character study.
It’s not an indictment of the police force as corrupt.
That’s not what this film is about. It’s about these characters.
I think you would have understood that after the 100th time you bring up Gatsby.
When you chastise Ethan Hawke’s character for not being a wolf, you’re actually failing to understand Ethan Hawke’s character and the true journey he’s on.
More like you’ve actually been seduced and manipulated into the corrupt and evil Denzel’s amoral worldview he’s adopted to rationalize his own amoral and psychopathic behavior.
His character so seduced you that by the end of it, you still questioned whether or not Denzel’s character was really a bad guy or just pushed to extreme actions because of a dire situation.
Even though the only reason his character is in this situation with the Russians is because he popped off and brutally beat a Russian boss to death.
At this point, you’re just sounding like a battered wife making excuses for the criminal violent abuser.
While you can identify turning points in a script, it seems the larger themes of the film have been completely lost on you.

I think what happens after is jake either becomes the wolf Alonzo was and replaces him, or he’s killed by Alonzo’s corrupt division.

47:46 You've seen the full character of Alonzo already. The people on his street hate his guts, the latino's with the bathtub literally say he's so dirty they don't want to shake his hands. Alonzo rules them by fear - which only leads to hate. You have dissed the character Jake like he is just some noob, but think about it for a second. In just one day Jake has won the respect of the latino household, and the gangsters on Alonzo's street by being the "good samaritan / cop". We know Alonzo hasn't been an arsehole for just one week (he shot Snoop Dogg way before, putting him in the wheelchair), and everyone says he has a reckless temper, which is proven again by his character thinking he can beat (the Russian) to death, and walk away carefree. Alonzo isn't operating in the grey zone, he's fully corrupted that even the criminals don't trust / respect him in anyway - except for Roger which was repaid by Alonzo's betrayal...yikes!

This guy didn't understand the movie at all. All that over-thinking of this film,, all that elaborating, and he completely missed the point.
So this is what happened. Alonzo was in Vegas where he got into a beef with an important Russian and beat him to death. The Russians didn't appreciate this too much and gave Alonzo the chance to live by telling him to pay for the death of this important Russian. Obviously, Alonzo didn't have the money. The Russians gave him a week to get it, or he would be killed. So Alonzo cooked up this scheme. He was always a crooked cop, he and the others he ran the streets with. He and his group manufactured this scheme to get the money he needed to pay off the Russians. Unfortunately, he was saddled with this rookie cop he didn't have time to deal with, and so the only way to get above all that training bullshit is to try to get the kid (Hoyt) involved, talking all this BS about getting the bigger fish and all that garbage. Alonzo never cared about the big fish. He was a crooked cop who'd once been a good cop. Anyway, he had seven days to find the money for the Russians or he was going to be killed, but then he finds out he has this rookie cop he has to look after, and he didn't have time for all that. So he tried to make the kid a part of it, bring him into the scheme by making all kinds of promises he was not -- or could not -- deliver. And Hoyt, being naive, at first believed him (just like all of us did, watching the movie). Alonzo's plan to get the money for the Russians had been in the works before Hoyt was dropped in his lap, so he had no choice but to try to bring Hoyt along, only Hoyt wasn't going for it.
First things first, Alonzo had to get to the Sandman, and get the money he needed to bride the top guys in his police department to get the warrant for Roger, his "friend", with whom he had had a relationship for ten years and with whom he had been involved in shady things. By the time of this movie, Alonzo had been corrupt for a long time, which is evidenced by the corrupt cops he had in his squad and the street characters he associated with. He had associations with corrupt cops in the higher levels of his department, and he had nurtured a lot of relationships with many people operating above the law, in the shadows. So at the time of this movie, there was nothing redeemable in him, and all of his claims that he did the things he did in order to get the bigger fish was just smoke and mirrors for Hoyt's benefit, to try to get him to play along. None of it was true. At this point he was a stone cold criminal.
Sandman was in prison, at an honor ranch, but Alonzo was able to steal the $40,000 from his girlfriend. This money was to pay for the arrest warrant he needed for Roger, which is why he met with the higher-ups of his department. And this wasn't the first time he'd bought arrest warrants. "Who's driving?" "Me..the green Mercedes?" It was a well-oiled machine of corruption.
Alonzo got his warrant and then went to visit Roger. Of course, the arrest warrant was not only bogus because it was fraudulent, but it was also bogus because Alonzo was never going to arrest Roger. His sole purpose was to kill Roger and steal the money in Roger's floor in order to pay off the Russians. And he'd been planning it for a week, long before he about Hoty. Obviously, he couldn't steal Roger's money and allow Roger to live. So again, Alonzo tried to get Hoyt involved, by not only trying to bribe him with the money he was stealing but also by trying to implicate him in Roger's shooting. If Hoty had done the shooting, he would be involved in all of it, and there would be no redemption for him. When he didn't go for it, Alonzo knew that Hoty was a liability and decided to kill him. While leaving Roger's house he called Smiley and his gang to set up for Hoyt's murder. It didn't quite turn out that way.
    The rest is history.
