So right, the thing about Alanzo is he's written like a textbook sociopath. The contradiction about psychopathy/sociopathy is that they are not good at intuitively understanding social situations. Sociopaths can't read faces as well as normal people, *yet* they are very good at manipulating people.
What made Alonzo become a dirty cop is probably not all that different from what made him become a cop in the first place. Not every police, but at some if not many choose that line of work because they like the power of it. And that's not entirely different from why a person might join a gang. People don't join gangs because they're a man of the people, salt of the earth. Gangs are power, and they're a way to put yourself above the people around you. They're Greek Life, but with guns.
So if Alonzo wants to set himself above everyone that's around him, be a cop. If Alonzo wants to set himself above any good cops in the Department, be a dirty cop. And if he wants to set himself above everyone in his neighborhood, live as a bad cop in a dirty neighborhood and he'll flaunt that he can kill them but they can't touch him.
To be fair, that's probably the more unrealistic things about this movie, that none of those people would've shot Alonzo already. For one thing, killing a cop and getting away with it buys a lot of respect in any gang. But it does show the kind of person Alonzo is more effectively than to portray the subject matter with absolute realism.

Fun fact: this was the first time filming was allowed inside Baldwin Village (The Jungles) the gang has/had a complete hold on the area and they had to get permission to film (a lot of the extras were in the actual BPSJ gang

True fact. I saw that in a documentary. Denzel grew up in the the city(Mt. Vernon,NY) next to mine and it I think it is why he was so believable because that is one of the most violent gang filled cities in America. It's nickname is Murdaville and half of my friends from there have that same exact character to them. That real "street justice" mentality is heavy out there.

Can you imagine watching him give this performance in front of you and you have to try and keep up.
Funny how Ethan Hawke is technically the lead of the film, and yet they put him in the supporting actor catergory, so that Denzel can get the lead oscar. Half of me agrees with it, because Denzel deserves it, half of me thinks that putting the lead in a supporting nomination, is somewhat disrespectful. Like ''sit you ass down, you ain't big''.
@transformersrevenge9 I see them as co-stars. Two main characters. Just one is a hero and the other a villain. They were put into separate categories, probably in hopes of each of them getting a shot of an Oscar without going head-to-head.
Oscars are more strategic and political than people realize. Buying ads, etc can affect who gets nominated and for what. I believe Warner Bros wanted Leo to be nominated as a lead in in Blood Diamond. And he'd be supporting actor for The Departed since it was more of an ensemble. But DiCaprio didn't want to be put against costars Nicholson (not nominated), Damon (not nominated) and Wahlberg (nominated), so I heard studios didn't fight for his acting nomination in The Departed. There was some other controversy that year. I think Brad Pitt didn't get Best Picture despite producing The Departed. It was exclusively awarded to another producer, Graham King.
But yeah Denzel definitely had the seniority which is why they got put where they did. I do think he is a lead actor in this movie. But Hawke is too. They just wanted both to win and studios figured separating them gave them the best shot.

Absolutely, and that's my favourite sort of 'bad guy', one you are conflicted about liking because you know shouldn't.
Yup.
I remember when this came out the biggest twist/shock was that Denzel was the bad guy. Up to that point he was always the hero. So much so that people (at least I) couldn't fathom the idea that Denzel would be the crook. So even though it was absolutely clear your brain just wouldn't let you think it, so when he left Ethan Hawk's character to die it was the biggest "Wait what, he's evil?".

This movie was the first Ethan Hawke movie I saw and ever since he’s been one of my favorite actors. His interviews are always so insightful.
For me, Gattaca, kicked ass.
His best film Brooklyn’s Finest, and a movie with Mark Ruffalo I forgot the name but they were both street dudes
Gotta check out Gattaca. A great futuristic noir sci-fi. So good that a lot of science classes will show it in high schools.

I love how you picked up on the supreme manipulation that Alonzo was doing to Jake. Every time Jake has an opportunity to leave the situation Denzel makes him feel like a coward for attempting to go. Also I think your perspective on him being a good cop is interesting because I personally don’t think he was ever good. His speech about changing things from the inside was another beautiful manipulation to convince Jake to stay a little longer so he could get him to the execution. I love your channel bro. Can’t wait to see more.
I can see Alonzo as a cop who succumbed to "Noble cause corruption" (ends justifying the means) back in the day, and lost track of where that line was, and simply succumbed to the corruption and his own ego. But by the end, he is as you said, purely manipulative and thinking he is always in control.

Funny Fact: There is an additional scene where Smiley basically not only reveals that Alonzo hired him to kill Jake and his family, but he also schools him how to play The Game right.

Training Day is one of the most well-crafted crime cop thrillers of all-time, and doesn't get the praise it should've got at the time of its release. This movie is so well written by David Ayer and well directed by Antoine Fuqua that on multiple viewings you can pick up on small details you never noticed before, all the while making it even a more layered and complex film than it has any right being.
*Favorite moment: the card playing scene. One of the best tension filled scenes I've ever witnessed, and so much of the background details tell the story more than what the characters say.*
Training Day didn't get the praise when it first was released? Where did you come up with that? Denzel won an Oscar for best actor that year. Ethan Hawke was nominated for Best Supporting actor -- along with a shitton of other nomination and awards the film received. It was praised by critics and fans.

Come on man "Doesn't get the praise it should've" is inaccurate it was highly profitable and nominated for Oscars. Denzel literally won an Oscar for this film. Its not an underrated or underappreciated movie at all
one of Denzel's best achievements. he breathes so many facets into this cop that it looks so nasty real. apart from the brilliant script and a great directorial work. it's definitely one of the best cop thrillers of all time. everything is just right here.

Two men committed to their individual codes, each is the catalist to more clearly define the other. Denzel character is all easy confidence and control to manipulate Ethans character into something to be used or discarded.
In less than a day, Denzels world falls apart, as Ethans World comes into sharp focus. We are what we do, and become ourselves in the doing..
All his "chickens come home to roost" in one day , but hes clearly had years of a career living above and outside the law.
Specifically though it really all fell to shit for him before this day when he took and lost a lot of money aparently gambling in Vegas.

Denzel gives such a legendary performance in this! The chemistry between him and Ethan Hawke always had me wanting more films with them together. I also had always known that king Kong scene before I watched it but watching that scene with context had my heart racing even though I had seen it before. Fantastic film!

Love how this movie all takes places during one day.
When I first saw this in a theater, as Ethan Hawke's character is with the guys who are about to waste him in the bathtub, while he's still talking to them the screen starts to fade to black. By the time it's entirely black there is only audio of them grabbing him and dragging him into the tub. Turned out it was just the bulb in the theater projector going out. In a few moments it got replaced or came back on or whatever, but there was about 30 seconds of BLACK SCREEN and audio of them about to kill him. I thought at any moment there was either going to be single gunshot or the audio would just cut out suddenly too. It was perfectly timed as if it was a deliberate choice for the movie. REALLY intense, right at that critical moment.
One of Denzels best performances ever. Academy Award well deserved. He is one my favourite actors.

Absolutely incredible film. Blew my mind first time I watched it and I must have seen it about five times since. That scene where Jake realises he's been left alone is the most uncomfortable threatening scene I think I've seen in cinema. Denzel deserved his Oscar, and Ethan Hawke deserved one too.
'Crimson Tide' is a beauty of a thriller with Denzel and Gene Hackman in it. Definitely a must see.
I saw this with my mom in Chicago at a hotel. She rented it and we ate room service. Blown away and I'm remembering just how terrifying the bathtub scene was. Wow.

Talk about a film that grows on me the more and more. Alonzo is one of the best villains ever put to screen. The more you watch this the more you see how much he was testing Jake a lot. Denzel deserved that Oscar for this but let's not overlook Ethan Hawke because he was great as well. Also tthe line (it's not what you know, it's what you can prove) is one of my favorite lines in the film.
That line is great but my favourite has to be the king Kong line.
The homie from Daredevil is Scott Glenn. A legendary actor. He's great in so many films. I'd highly recommend checking out Silverado. It's one of his older roles, and it's a fantastic movie.

If you haven’t seen “He Got Game”, starring Denzel, Rosario Dawson and and former basketball player Ray Allen, I can really recommend it. A great performance from all involved.

Ah yes! This is one of the true classics. I still reference "King Kong ain't got sh't on me!" from time to time. Saw a post on instagram recently where Denzel, at the age he is now, perfectly quotes this movie, he knows all the lines still, and has the same tone, same energy. A true, true legend! Also so good to see you, friend :-)
There has never been a more well deserved Oscar for best actor
Great movie and a great rewatch, did you notice how Alonzo was talking about "keeping the bathtub clean" just before Jake gets back in the car after the murder? That whole moment between them about leadership and what it takes to make a difference was just blowing enough hot air to get Jake moved into place for his execution. Ice cold.
The first time I saw this movie... It gave me so much anxiety. So much goddamn anxiety. It's tense. The acting is top tier. Loved your reaction.
Scott Glenn played the "old friend" Lonzo took him to see and then returned and killed him for the cash. He was in Dare Devil and a lot more good movies for several decades. You react to great movies, James, love your choices and your reactions.
IMO, one of the most under-rated movies ever. Even though it gets accolades, it deserves so much more. The acting in this was off the chain.

Let me tell you about the time I almost died…..
In deleted scenes they go more in depth on Alonzos transformation. Shows picture of his 1st days on the force, was clean cut in uniform and talks about the person who trained him showing him the ways of the streets and little by little becoming the corrupt cop that he is now.

I'm jealous that it's not MY first time watching this. Whenever James comes across one of my 'favourite' films, it's a good time. You must've been pausing this every three seconds going "that line was CRAZY!". Still insane to think this, the Matrix and Gladiator are over twenty years old. Man the time flies.
This is still one of my all time favourite movies. The fact that everything we see all happens within one day too!
A film you may like to react to that is in a similar vein to Training Day is "Street Kings" starring Keanu Reeves.
Denzel's performance is so layered. Even through the horrible things he's doing on screen, you can still see the last few flickers of a good man and good cop fading away.
"Malcom X", "John Q", "Man on Fire", "Training Day", "American Gangster"... to say Denzel is master of his craft is an understatement.
And, yeah, Scott Glenn is the homey from Dare Devil. And Apocalypse Now. And Silence of the Lambs. And the Bourne movies. And Backdraft. And Urban Cowboy. And Silverado. And Hunt for Red October. And Sucker Punch. And The Keep. And The Virgin Suicides. And Castle Rock. And The Patty Duke Show. S Glenn's a *playa*, fo sho.

This was Terry Cruz’s first movie. I can’t remember if he was a bodyguard or a driver, but the director liked his look and put him in a scene, then another, and another. He never even got paid. He was just happy to be in the movie. He told his mother and she didn’t believe him … until she was watching the Oscar’s and they showed him in Training Day.

Apart from the CGI, Blade 1 and 2 still hold up extremely well. Wesley Snipes absolutely kills.. nah, he OBLITERATES it in those movies.
The way he said breath and starred at him with those eyes was chilling absolutely fantastic flick I only watched it about 2 weeks ago

As I get older, my top ten list now has about 25 movies on it... but this one is a true top ten for me. As for what led Alonzo to become what he was... he likely had his own training day and could not navigate his way out, made little compromises in the beginning to get along... then he was quickly over his head. The retired cop (Scott Glen character) was probably His Alonzo and suffered the same fate.

Going in i knew nothing about this film other than some of the actors involved but maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan. I was floored, spent the entire sequence leading up to the end with my jaw fully on the floor
I absolutely had the same reaction as you. I definitely got the feeling that Alonzo used to be much like Jake, and I think it would be interesting to see him fall from grace, slowly selling pieces of his soul.
“Flight” is a great Denzel movie.
Part of a series written by David Ayer highlighting crime and corruption in Los Angeles over different eras includes End of Watch. The first, Dark Blue with Kurt Russell, is also a must see!
One of the best movies ever made, stellar performances from everyone involved, such a classic!
I recommend you watch "Justified", it portrays a US Marshal who blurs the line between good and bad, a quickdraw lawman who has to go back to Harlan Kentucky after he gives someone 24 hours to leave town, and then kills him.
Season 1 is kinda like a intro season, and it only gets better for every season, unlike most shows that peek at season 1.

I worked on the Baltimore assembly line that made that '79-'79 Monte Carlo (6:13 mark), along with Malibus, Tempests, and Grand Prix'.
Another movie I really liked from around this time is Collateral. It's the ambiguity and the manipulation that is great in both movies. Obviously Training Day has made the most impact because it's just a classic at this point. I think Collateral is underrated gem. Much love! J.

I love to hate how all of Michael Mann's "lead villains" kind of prophesize their own death earlier in the film. Remember when Tom Cruise's character is talking about how much he hates LA and that one time a man's body did several laps around the city on the subway before anyone realized he was dead? Then, when he's mortally wounded, he's left to presumably circle the city on the subway.

Flipping pigeons is definitely real. I grew up in Compton, uncles had a pigeon coupe. I remember them tagging & flipping pigeons.
Watching this for the first time, or any time thereafter is a wild ride.
