      To be fair, the MLB replay review rule just recently got implemented, so up until now, they never really needed cameras in position to catch close calls because reviewing plays wasn’t a thing until very recently. The NFL only had a few cameras until replay review became a thing, then they added more cameras in order to get the good angles.

      That's the problem with the MLBs current review system, if Duvall had been called safe there then replay would've affirmed that as well, the call on the field shouldn't matter, reviews should be objective, not influenced by the flawed human judgement of an on-field official with one shot to make a call

    Holy shit, yadi's blocking the plate. A lane to the plate has to be from where the runner is actually coming from, not behind yadi. Technically on that logic unless a catcher is literally sitting on it, they're never actually blocking the plate.

    • @fomori2
      @fomori2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      If you watch it frame by frame, Yadi is in front of the plate until the ball arrives, then he starts to block it as he moves to tag the runner. That would 100% legal if he had never dropped the ball.
      The question becomes though, is it now blocking BECAUSE he dropped the ball. I dont know if the rule sufficiently addresses that situation.

      It's the MLB man I really think the umpires just kinda make the rules up as they go along. You could replay that a million times to a group of umps and each time they'll make a different decision and then come up with some explanation of why they made it. They're explanation for this one is basically that the runner had to do some kind of 360 degree magical slide to get around Yadi rather than just using common sense and saying he was blocking the plate.

    • @grandladybug
      @grandladybug 3 ปีที่แล้ว +65

      @Coding Crusader he's sliding away to avoid the tag as much as possible like they teach you... the catcher thought he had possession of the ball and moves to cover the plate and tag the runner. but since he didnt have the ball his move to cover the plate should have been illegal. he also keeps his pivot foot on the plate the whole time. so either the runner breaks his arm back from sliding into the plate with what little room he has or he has to go around his foot on a catcher who is covering the plate illegally. this is coming from someone who is not a fan of either team

    • @Chariercha
      @Chariercha 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @Coding Crusader yeah he could also just choose to slide right into the plate and Yadi... and break his ankle instead.

  • @smudent2010
    @smudent2010 3 ปีที่แล้ว +139

    If Yadi didn't have his foot literally on the plate then his hand would have touched home plate. How is that not blocking the plate? So by that ruling, I can lay on top of home plate but leave just a little bit of room for a hand, effectively shrinking the size of home plate, and it would be legal? Makes no sense at all... but it's 2021, common sense isn't common anymore in anything

    • @adamleblanc5294
      @adamleblanc5294 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's because he was making a play on the ball. If the ball was still 50 feet from the plate, he would have been called safe because the catcher would have to leave a lane, but since the ball was being fielded, the blocking the plate rule doesn't apply. If he had caught the ball instead of bobling it, nothing would have been in question is a good way to look at it.

    • @alexn78666
      @alexn78666 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      go back to 0:28 and pause. right as he's receiving the ball there's almost half the plate open for a slide. had he not dropped the ball it would've been a clean play. there's no possible way for him to realize he dropped it and magically stop all his momentum to get out of the way in the one second it took for him to drop it.

    • @smudent2010
      @smudent2010 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So you can actually shrink the size of the touchable plate making it harder for your hand to touch and that's alright? It's totally antithetical to the rule. Fact is his hand would have touched exactly where his foot was based on the momentum of the play but it was blocked by his foot. Leaving a tiny lane is still blocking the part of the plate where he would have touched and been safe. Where's the limit to how much you're allowed to block before it's blocking the plate? If you can't block the plate anymore then every square inch should be available to the runner

      If you watch at 0:27 as the throw is coming in, Yadi is not blocking the plate. He turns as the ball arrives to apply the tag and it actually would have been a clear out had he not dropped the ball as he went for the tag. There was a clear lane before the ball arrived, and Yadi blocked the plate only after the ball got to him. He just dropped the ball in the process of trying to make the tag. Additionally the rule states "Not withstanding the above, it shall not be considered a violation of this Rule 6.01(i)(2) if the catcher blocks the pathway of the runner in a legitimate attempt to field the throw (e.g., in reaction to the direction, trajectory or the hop of the incoming throw, or in reaction to a throw that originates from a pitcher or drawn-in infielder)."
