    As many others, your missing the main point about moving bed filters :)
    It's not about "fresh bacteria" or that is "self cleaning". It's about the fact, that is in direct contact with air from the bubbles, and thereby much more oxygen, then you will ever have in a normal submerge filter. The access to oxygen is much much much more important than the surface area, to ensure an effective nitrogen cycle in your aquarium. That is why moving bed filters (and trickle down filters) are so effective, and why they are used in professional everywhere :)

      Yes your right , i did cover that but as a hobbyist self cleaning is main advantage because that is the most convenient thing that we see. All that direct contact with O2 and stuff are not measurable from any hobbyist point of view. As long as our parameters test shows fine its good enough.

    Hi bro . Liked the way you explained everything . I want to use this in a closed container . Will the k1 micro media be noisy if used in (airtight container) as It will be in my bedroom???

    Thats great information. Tank you. Hope discovered your tube before I got the k1. I am trying to adapt the bottle to hang on filter sucking nosle. 40 liter aquarium i have.

      Thank you, glad it helped you.... Many dont know that even my self when i first started and tried. All the best. For a 40 liter i suggest go for ceramic media better surface area.

      @@TheArowana12 Ceramic balls (bio balls it says) or Ceramic rings? Will be great if I you can suggest one and give little info about the differences.

      If you want to select a bio media go for the ceramic media that is not solid instead get those that are porous. In this video i showed example of the bio media and how to choose. th-cam.com/video/hLgUt-ikPmw/w-d-xo.html

    hey mate can you use a long thin air stone instead of a pipe with holes finding it real hard to get a pipe to fit the air pump or even a pipe thin enough also you are using micro as opposed to normal k1 have you used both and if so is micro that much better
    cheers

    That ceramic media doesn't actually have that much usable surface area for beneficial bacteria. Best media is coarse foam.

    • @TheSimpleAquarist
      @TheSimpleAquarist  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes Coarse foam can be used for as both mechanical and bio media but there are no match to these Ceramic bio media which i used in this video(biohome plus) 1 kg of these media has 7300ft² . IF your talking about those non porous ceramic ring , yes your are 100% right. I use Foams as my mechanical filter .

    • @DeepikaAditya
      @DeepikaAditya 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheSimpleAquarist Yes I could see the Biohome and have conversed with Pondguru on it as well in past but I don't agree with the hype. The surface area is calculated by Nitrogen BET method where Nitrogen gas molecules adsorb to the surface. Now the aerobic bacteria which oxydizes Ammonia prefers fast flowing oxygen rich water which is available on the outside of the cintered glass media like biohome or ceramic media like rings so the bacteria mostly stay outside and the mythical internal surface area will not be much utilised for Ammonia oxydation. Plus water always follows the path of least resistance, its not going to force itself through all those crevices when it can go around it. Plus the size of bacteria is in Micro Meters and Gas molecules are in Angstroms much of the surface area is unusable to bacteria anyways. Now look at the structure of reticulated foam, if the foam is perfect cut for the tray of a canister filter all surfaces will get water flow. That's why 20 to 30 ppi Polyether Foam is best biomedia. And only above 30ppi it starts to become effective Mechanical Media like that Fine Filter pad.
      Biohome is atmost a snake oil. Pondguru is a good guy and his heart might be in right place but there is no proof he can ever provide for effectiveness of biohome and only anecdotal evidence is provided.

    • @TheSimpleAquarist
      @TheSimpleAquarist  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally depending on how you look at it but id say you have valid point .( i also was quite sceptical regarding these types of media like seachem matrix bio home and all until i used it myself). I'm not saying foam doesn't work but if you have the place yes go for it but for me would choose sintered glass because i have good results with it. Well I'm k1(fluidized bed) person as you can see from the video due to almost NON to least maintenance routine. Pond guru in other hand is a seller his presentation regarding the product is simply vague . Speaking about evidence i think every tank are different due to flow rates ,shapes , sizes and bioload as well.So Most importantly stick to what works for you and Keep it simple.

    • @DeepikaAditya
      @DeepikaAditya 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheSimpleAquarist I have almost 4 litres of Matrix in my Canister on 4 feet tank. But now I have filled the rest of space with nylon pot scrubbers after upgrading from HW302 to 304.

    instead of k1 median, you can use a better alternative which is a USED air line, cut to small pieces. the if the air line is rubberised, it is better then those smooth type or straw.

      Yes, you can use this together no harm just make sure the k1 has sufficent movement.

      This is the best overflow I found for fresh water set up, as we want intake from bottom also in fresh water, not like Salt, where you get protein on surface and have Living stone and a live substrate and overflow from top is good.

    Three weeks in my canister and the K1 will not sink or move. All K1 does is float. I tried seeding it and all still floats. How do I get the K1 to start tumbling??

    • @TheSimpleAquarist
      @TheSimpleAquarist  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You need to add air bubbles.... In order the bacteria to populate you need an ammonia source or fishes in your aquarium.... Some system takes longer. I suggest add more aeration.

    • @mentalistsa
      @mentalistsa 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Plenty of air and fish. Guess it just takes longer. Even with high flow air incoming they still float. Thanks

    • @TheSimpleAquarist
      @TheSimpleAquarist  ปีที่แล้ว

      first 2 weeks it wont be moving until bacteria starts to grow, If after 4 weeks still the same that means you need to aeration .

    So i dont know who is right u or the makers of this. Why u need more so much good stuff happens on k1. And the best of the best bacteria survive

    • @TheSimpleAquarist
      @TheSimpleAquarist  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well your are right but it really depending on the bioload of the tank...i've tested a 4ft tank running on small bottled K1 and i was getting ammonia spikes even after 6 months of running. After i added more media the spikes were gone. Bacteria need surface in order to grow. So i guess it wasn't sufficient But the best thing about K1 there is no need for Maintenance for it. Cheers

    • @Indiabhanu
      @Indiabhanu 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheSimpleAquarist I made this last night but didn't get any noise. In my view noise is manageable. Could u help in deciding if I need a sump filter like urs for my 5 feet tank? I currently have a power filter and a top filter which makes lot of noise.

    • @TheSimpleAquarist
      @TheSimpleAquarist  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Indiabhanu Yes with a larger amount of k1 in a compartment together with strong aeration will create some amount of annoying noise but a small bottle or fully covered canister would be less. The type of filter you need totally depending on your bioload (how many fishes do you have). I suggest for a 5ft tank a minimum of 3ft sump will do great as you can then add more fishes without issues Of course with regular water changes.

    • @TheSimpleAquarist
      @TheSimpleAquarist  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Firstly Tq for watching. Well, this video is not a comparison video but merely a video of why I choose k1 micro as my main bio media. That example is just to show that using k1 in a small amount or famous in bottle way is not adequate. Fyi 1 kg of Biohome media has = 7300 sqft². K1 micro = 950 sqft² only. You can use other porous ceramic media as well.
