I love this series. I'd love it to extend to all things aquarium, substrate, fish, plants, salty setups, fresh set ups. I really enjoy your spicy takes in these!

I also use them as tank dividers 👍 Put HOB on each side.

Mattenfilters are my favourite, even though I'm not a breeder. I love them for their simplicity. I don't use them in every tank but the benefits, as you have said, are huge. I don't think you mentioned that they are also easy to hide in an aquascape- I have epiphytes and moss attached to mine, and people don't see it at all unless they know what they're looking for.

I have not used a matten filter yet. Looks like a great filter. I will need to try out. Thanks for all your time to go share with all of us.

In my shrimp tanks mine are power head driven. I last cleaned mine over 2 years ago with only a couple mm in water lever difference. Shrimplets love the wall🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐

They are GREAT! You can also use them in the middle of a tank to divide the tank if you have fish you need to divide up because they are fighting or something.

I LOVE the Matten filters. Another positive is that if you have goldfish you can grow duckweed behind the sponge to keep some going to feed the goldfish! I also put some houseplant growing out of the water behind the sponge too!

Couple things, that ppi on the foam you have is too high snd will plug faster. In 20L 30ppi foam is about where you wanna be. In 40g breeders 20ppi foam is the best.
Maintenence is simple. Vac out the silt behind the matten, than use your vacuum on the fish side and vac the matten off itself. You can literally go years without having to actually pull the poret out by doing this.
The other thing here is personally i use a bag of matrix behind all my mattens, not for the tank itself but to jump start new tanks if i need to start another one.
I also suggest checking out Stephan at Swisstropicals and getting his jetlifters/superlifters. They are superior to anything else for water flow.

I got a couple of large sponge airlift filters at either end of a 40-gallon breeder--as well as a massive pile of Subwassertang around a root ball in the middle of the tank!!! No problems yet!!!😂

I use matten filters on my shrimp tanks and one Threadfin rainbow tank. I love matten filters.

1001% right on the sponge lasting forever!!! Even with the standard airlift sponge filters are insanely easy to maintain and last practically forever!!! I can't believe most standard LFS don't carry/stock the sponge filter methods!!!

Thank you for an informative and interesting series. I have a question can you use this filter powered by a submersible pump to drive the water or is it not worth the effort and cost? Keep up good work.

If I ever have a reason to redo my 180, I'd be very tempted to do the corner matten filters.

If you want gentle flow I could totally see that working

You didn't say it directly, but definitely implied the UGF is da bomb! Or maybe I just hear what I want lol. I didn't have any tanks without a UGF, but if I setup any other tanks I am very interested in giving this a go. The science is there and I see very few drawbacks to using the matten filter. Although I'm guessing I would paint the airlift black. It maybe bright orange or since crazy neon color just to be odd hahaha.
Curious if there would be any benefit to gluing a mesh screen over the output? Guessing most fish won't try to travel with all the bubbles and water flow but could definitely see loaches not caring so much?

Great video, per usual. I find myself wondering if anyone has used matten UGF combo. Why? No clue, lol. But couldn't a person just put a 30ppi on top of the UGF plate?

👍🏻👍🏻 only thing I don’t like about my mattens is the cleaning but other than that they’re great

But you only need to clean them every few years if you have small size fish! I love them!!!!! I like 30 ppi sponge.

Are we going to be seeing that filter in shrimp tank soon?

Having only 10g or under heavily planted tanks spread throughout the house it doesn't seem the matten would be the best choice of filtration for me at the moment. But if I had to move everything to one space and use air driven filtration, it seems like the best type. ✌️

I'd like a video on "no filter" aka using the tanks substrate and plants as your filter no air or power filters. In response to the running out of filters to cover comment.
