    Sir why used two glass in every partition to add water from top side. if I use one glass then water can also move to next part. I mean 1st glass has 2 inch gap from bottom and 2nd down 2 inch from top then water can go zig zag plz tell me is it ok. In your small sump water pass below 1st baffle then after 10 inch I connect 2nd baffle and connect 2 inch down then water will pass from up making diagonal movement pass through media. Is it ok or must need 2 baffles before every partition.

    I just got an IOS nano tank and this is so informative. Thank you so much brother.

    Nice setup and a good explanation of how it works .I got a 95 gallon tank a couple of years ago for free which I'm now looking to get going but I'm not sure which way I want to go regarding the filtration system or whether or not I want to do a saltwater tank .
    The bottom plate is already factory pre-drilled for a sump system if I want it .It also came with a Quiet overflow brand overflow box that I could use if I want to .
    I'm still at the research phase right now which is why I'm at your channel right now .
    My biggest concern is flooding in case of a power outage which we have all too often where I live .
    We just got our power restored after we got hit with a nasty wind storm that had wind speeds of over 70 mph that knocked out power for half a million people for almost a week .
    We have a backup generator but it doesn't kick on automatically as soon as the power goes out . This is one of the reasons why I haven't setup a saltwater tank since they're way more susceptible to toxin build up than freshwater tanks .
    Anyways I subbed to your channel and look forward to seeing your other videos . Have a great day 👋

      As for flood due to power outage is avoidable but generator for a week that's something to think of. As for now, you could get a acdc air pump that lasts for 24 hours meanwhile someone get to the generator to manually turn it on. Thank you very much, ill try to upload more informational content like this. Happy fish keeping.

    Explanation top notch👍 i have made a sump using diy pvc overflow and having evaporation issues i have to fill 1liter daily or else the pump runs dry. If any suggestions highly appreciated

    • @TheSimpleAquarist
      @TheSimpleAquarist  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi There, Yes All aquariums have evaporation issues. As for sump filtration evaporation can cause pump failure due to low water at the pump compartment. If you want something automatic you can look for an automatic water top off system, this system will fill water in your pump compartment automatically when the water level drops below the desired level using a mini float valve or sensor to measure.

    Very nice system you built. I don't think a sump would be practical for me because I only have a 55 gallon tank.
    Now I have a Hob and a sponge filter for the tank.
    I'm thinking about building a 5 gallon bucket gravity filter using k1 media and matala.

  • @HalfManHalfCichlid
    @HalfManHalfCichlid 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I got rid of my K1 and replaced it with Poret foam. The K1 has zero detritus holding capacity compared to sponges which are eay to remove and clean, keeping detritus and muck out of the main aquarium. I also replaced the ceramic type media, since it clogged with pot scrubbies which have tremendous dirt holding and bacteria capacity. Nice set up just wanted to share what I have changed to after 10 years.

    • @TheSimpleAquarist
      @TheSimpleAquarist  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the purpose of K1 is biological filter only and not mechanical , better choice for both is Sponge or foam based media. Thanks for the sharing.

      Well, sump is not a must but sump filtration is very2 flexible in terms of adding and customizing filter equipment in the future (it's almost future proof) as for other filtration you have a fixed amount of media or other filtration you can use. SO far large tanks a sump type filter will do really well.

    You done a great sump. Your understanding and mostly the reasoning behind the way you done the good things are none sense. I'm not gone pick up on every single one but the two are completly a joke is that : first - you don't have an emergency drain even though you call it like that and NO, if your 2" get completely clogged if the water in the sump permitting will flood your house. Second - return section, apart of water contained in return plumbing should not come down "almost" no other water (when return pump stopped) when correctly set the return pump according with your weir capacity of skimming. If your water rises more then maximum 1/2" (ideally 1/4") above the bottom line of your weir slots that mean you pump up to much water and break the principle of skimming. And things can go on...But never the less very good filtration and one of the best sumps for fresh water I ever seen.

    • @TheSimpleAquarist
      @TheSimpleAquarist  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you very much for your constructive feedback. Firstly i would like to clarify may be i was not detail enough on the video -
      1.My 2 inch main overflow piping is only running around 15-30 percent capacity ( i had to close the valve in order to maintain the level in my overflow n achieve full siphon) .
      2. Regarding getting clogged i have already tested no issues my house did not flood the 1 inch pipe could handle the flow as i designed it to be.
      3. I'm really not concern regarding skimming the water because im running auto drip system 24/7 on this tank.
      The thing abt fishkeeping is no matter how experienced we are there would always be new things that we learn everyday. Thanks
      Happy fishkeeping.

    • @TheSimpleAquarist
      @TheSimpleAquarist  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As long as your return pipe ( the pipe that would be transferring the water from your sump to the main tank) is not fully submerged into the main tank's water no backflow will happen and your tank wouldn't flood in case of a power outage.

    • @TheSimpleAquarist
      @TheSimpleAquarist  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For this size tank, I think a canister filter or top filter will suffice. Having an internal sump on such a small tank is a waste of space.

  • @billlyell8322
    @billlyell8322 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have 1 disagreement. The tank does not to be drilled. You can use an undergravel filter and lift tube instead. I have used a undergravel for decades as an input to a canister filter. There should be no reason why a sump can't replace the canister as the filter.
    I'm looking to design an above tank sump for my 45 gal tank, my small tank. The lid for the sump will be floating aquaponic foam to hold plants. Essentially a window box made from plexiglass. Since I'll use the entire tank length, even a small 8" x 8" size will be larger that the current canister on it.
    Using my small tank should be a cost effective test to see if indeed it does work as planned.

    • @TheSimpleAquarist
      @TheSimpleAquarist  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For smaller tank of course you can... Bigger tank like mine gettting it drilled is more reliable long term.
