The Best Bolivian Food In NYC Is Served In A Subway

  • Underneath the 8th Avenue side of the Columbus Circle subway station lives an underground food hall known as Turnstyle. Bolivian Llama Party’s location in Turnstyle may be overlooked by the average commuter. But for any determined New Yorker, Bolivian Llama Party’s salteñas and chola sandwiches are well worth the hunt.
Sometimes called Bolivian soup dumplings, salteñas are best enjoyed by biting off the tip and slurping up all the delicious filling through the gap. We made the trek to Bolivian Llama Party via the subway to try out three kinds of salteñas and the best-selling chola Bolivian Llama Party offers. We talked to the three-brother team behind the restaurant about what it's like to run a restaurant inside of a subway station.

I'm from Bolivia and Salteñas are the best food! we eat them in the morning like a breakfast.
the tradition is to go out with your friends or family and go to the restauran and buy Salteñas! also they become a meme here bc for every single fathers day the gift is a salteña (and for mothers day the gift is a fancy meal lol) I remeber for student day all classmates give money to buy salteñas and delivered to the school :) good times! (sorry for my English)

I am from chicago, new york is hella fun. its so dirty but magical, graffiti everywhere and street art, the buildings are old and grimy but it feels so modern and chic at the same time, roof top gardens everywhere in greenwich village, everyone is out at all hours and you can literally find a shit ton to do at any hour of the night. the older subway systems are hot as hell and smell like pee but the old tile and the murals and steel beams make riding them so cool. theres weird random garbage piles and homeless people sleeping all over time square but its so breath taking at night. the people are any type of people you can literally imagine and the food scene is like nothing else. I miss new york you will love it!

Epok epok came before the Curry Puff (Karipap). Epok epok was inspired by the Portuguese empanada in the 1500s in the Malay Peninsula, while Spaniards took the empanadas to the Phillipines. The curry puff (Karipap) was created in 1820s Singapore to placate British palates that brought over the Cornish pastries and were served by Indian cooks (who knew curry and potatoes all too well).
Curry puff is flakier and often more buttery than Epok epok. This flaky and buttery style was born in the kitchen of the legendary Polar Café founder, Mr. Chan Hinky, on High Street (now it is Polar Puffs and Café). Mr. Chan’s specialization - western pastries - gave rise to the marriage of western-style, buttery and flaky pastry flour and the locally beloved chicken curry. He had bought the curry recipe from an Indian merchant and soon afterwards achieved a new sensational hit when he introduced the “curry puff” to his café in 1926.
Fun fact: Although these baked or fried wheat flour dough pockets filled with meat and vegetable were staples in Iberia (what is today known as Portugal and Spain), the actual idea came from the Middle East. The dish (a form of the Persian sanbusak سنبوساگ‎ ) came to Iberia through Morocco. From the Middle East, the Persian sanbusak went west to be the Iberian *empanada* and to the east it went to India to become the *samosa.* So both the empanada-inspired *Epok epok* and the samosa-inspired *Karipap* can both be traced back to the *Sanbusak.*
