DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time. Also sometimes the Pokemon Battle Historia doesn't provide enough information to talk about certain Pokemon so I add Smogon analysis to make sense of it. This is pretty rare though.
To the people asking why I don't cover Smogon Singles for Gens 1 and 2: It wouldn't really be a history video if I covered those because online Smogon gen 1 meta to my knowledge wasn't actually played until late 2000s. I wanted to cover tournaments/competitive battling that was actually played during the early years of Pokemon (late 90s).
To the people asking why I cover Smogon at all for singles: To my knowledge, Smogon was the most popular format for Gens 3-5 and held a number of tournaments throughout the years. As for Gen 6, I am not covering Battle Spot Singles because there is more information and explanations about sets being used relative to their own meta on Smogon. In other words, there are few written analyses about Battle Spot Pokemon besides the Top tiers and I would like to avoid theorycrafting because it may have a hint of bias (though I theorycraft if I REALLY couldn't find information on a certain Pokemon). The keyword here is explanations. Though I did find statistics of most Pokemon used and most moves used, there wasn't really any explanations on why. Also the few Pokemon I did find analysis of for Top Tier Battle Spot Singles had very similar move sets to the Smogon OU sets anyway.
For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.

It was awful until Heracross happened, then it slowly improved.
@@YouW00t Even in gen 2 heracross and MAYBE scizor helped a bit, and they stood out against the garbage in gen 3 too. Gen 4 was where it really accellerated with Heracross being a dominant sweeper thanks to the p/s split giving it a good moveset variety, scizor gaining an amazing ability and the tools to abuse it not to mention some half decent new bugs like Yanmega to speed boost its way through teams with respectable special attack and strong STABs.

I love how important and versatile Celebi was in Advance while also being nearly impossible to get in that gen. Till this day, my Emerald is still missing the Onion Fairy.
Unfortunately, there's no legitimate way to obtain it unless you have the Japanese cartridge of Pokemon Colosseum.

As much as I love 5th gen it was the beginning of the end... we really need GameFreak to either push the reboot button or have a new dev team take over, because they've been accelerating the death of the series rapidly since X&Y.
SM clogged OU with something like a dozen new legendaries. A lot of the stronger pokes you would've expected to stay in OU have been kicked down into UU which of course means old UU mons are NU, NU is now PU, etc.
I feel like you could fix a lot of that by banning the tapus and UB’s

It’s honestly not even overall power creep that did it, tbh gen 8 really had power decay thanks to all the mons that just died along with megas and Z moves deleted. The main reason that it’s NU is because as it is now funny zarude is a top tier in ru and that Mon happens to invalidate celebi nearly completely. If it moved to uu I’d bet celebi instantly moves back up

I remember in school the alleged method of unlocking (much like Mew and the truck) was you need to catch an Unown of each letter, then Celebi has an astronomically low chance of appearing in the Ruins of Alph, this all must happen _after_ you first "talk" to the shrine in the woods.

Fun fact: Celebi’s Japanese name is Serebii. I nicknamed my Shiny Celebi in PMD DX Fairy. The other Celebi is named after the Japanese name of Celebi.

How good was X updated, giving a Gen 7 coverage of 3-5 Pokémon previously covered on the channel.

What I’m most impressed about celebi is that despite having a not so great typing of grass/psychic giving it 7 weaknesses and even a 4x weakness to bug. it still managed to be a top tier mon.
It’s always bugged me that Celebi doesn’t have a signature move, considering the other two legendaries in its debut generation did. I hope it gets one soon.

It DOES have one. Hold Back, which is basically False Swipe
@@micdrop344 Hold back is an event exclusive move; it's learned by Mareep, Beldum, Serperior, Samurott, Emboar, and Munchlax, not just Celebi. I wouldn't count it as exclusive unless it is learned naturally by only the one Pokémon or evolution line.

UNFORTUNATELY currently in gen 8 celebi stands in NU. with the release of crown tundra there was a huge power creep within the tearing and the pro mince of pheremosa(banned), urshifu-single strike (banned), genesect(banned), lando-I(banned) and many more has made celebi an after thought. the current meta game also has huge offensive fire types along with super defensive flying types that are incredibly hostile to celebi.
Anothet problem, Zarude exists so when Zarude is in a tier, it pushes Cele down because it is a very good celebi counter

@@keetendailey4337 As far as I know, Synchronize only works against encounters rather than gifts but you can save before receiving Zeraora and soft reset, so you can test if Synchronize works on it.

Couldn’t stand playing against it in gen 3. I was one of the people who would put HP bug on lots of random Pokémon, to freaking get rid of it.
Brings Heracross, Pinsir, and Scizor to every battle.
Jacob Dying Extraordinaire I had a Cradily with HP bug (just in case someone tried to outstall me with celebi). Hp bug skarmory was also surprisingly effective

I remember how good it was in stadium 2 when i used it there, especially in r2.
You know how many annoying gimmicks the AI employs, well, a single leech seed and they can spam double team, attract and paralysis etc. they want and it doesnt matter.
Not to mention it can kill almost anything with leech seed + recover, thanks to its bulk.
It even walls Mewtwo well if it doesn’t carry Ice Beam or Fire Blast

You definitely should do a video about the major rules changes from each generation. Newer players may not know about the weather wars of gen 5, and how much that shaped the metagame.

It speaks volumes about the Power Creep when a good Pokemon like Celebi isn't good enough for OU anymore. Monsters like Azumarill, Hoopa-U, both Thundurus Forms, and Salamence are stuck in BL.
The Power Creep is off the charts, OU is insane, and UU is effectively the new standard tier of competitive Pokemon, and who knows how long that will last.
Salamance is in Borderline! Holy cow. That isn't right.

Celebi was a star in my Gen 6 Inverse teams, Scarf allowed it to outperform Serperior as a revenge killer & healing wish was an amazing tech for it, others used it with NP as a late game sweep to devastating effect. Damn I miss Inverse.

There is a reason why Game Freak made the Japanese Pre-Order Bonus for Coliseum be a flawless EV and IV'ed Celebi because even they know Celebi in Gen 3 is the top of every Ubers list baring Mew and Mewtwo
No pokemon should be a fairy type more than Celebi but they didn't give it to celebi. Literally makes no sense
