i use a custap set to get toxic spikes up immediately, works in ubers, and ill useteam preview to scout when i can bait it in, i also run the egg move endure to pop off custap more reliably
keep in mind, Dusclops was UU just because how important Ghost Types were in Gen 4 and 5 to prevent Rapid Spin. If Defog could remove hazards back in Gen 5, I doubt most of the Pokemon were in the tier they actually were and even Mismagius would drop NU which used Misdreavious to remove hazard instead. Forrestress could still be used in OU because of how good it was in Rain, but the Latis would be much much more common and Zapdos would likely rise with 100% Thunder Spam.

With hazards all over the field, it's rare that Forteress would stay at full health to make use of Sturdy, especially since it keeps switching in and out to clear out hazards and setting them himself
I like using a Forretress set with a red card/pinch berry. Ability: Sturdy. Moves: counter, stealth rock, volt switch, rapid spin. If the opponent hits you with a strong physical move, use counter, red card will activate, and the new pokemon will take a lot of damage or die. Its a gimmick, for sure, but a fun gimmick at that.
Poor forretress. I mean it was OU Most of the Time which is great but the meta shifted in a way that it was unusable in OU but too strong for a lower Tier which is kinda lame...

@@dburris718 it's an interesting topic to talk about, what specifics spreads do and stuff like that. Bulky can mean anything. Specially defensive physical? Why is it for. There are spreads that are very specific to live certain moves.
@@mainlyjm generally speaking, if the Pokémon has a specific use, the IVs/EVs spread will be almost always the same and you can grasp the idea from their roles, talking about specific spreads would make the video too technical for standard viewers. Worth to mention is that they do add the IVs/EVs spread when talking about one notable place in competitive scene, for they usually do think out of the box.
I've dabbled with this idea for some time. For now, we mention spreads briefly here and there in the voice over. I've been trying to find a way to present it in the editing without cluttering the screen with text. Perhaps I can make it separate from moves but the moves are grouped with the EV spreads when considering sets usually, so not sure what the best play is haha.

If Forretress had better sp.defense and Recover, it would be amazing, I remember using one when I was playing X, I gave mine's Earthquake, Gyro ball, Spikes and Stealth rock, Sassy nature with max health/sp.defense, worked pretty well :)
I've toyed with the idea of using something like foretress in a single player team but I always balk since it's a mostly defensive pokemon that sits there throwing things at the opponent that will eventually lead to a ko when there are so many other pokemon, even with lower bst that you can just send in when they have an advantage, click a move and ko something right away. In the later gens I would give foretress volt switch since it can take a hit while switching out (since it has negative priority it might actually let your other pokemon switch in safer than if you switched manually) 1 hazard, since the opponent is likely only to trip on them when sending something in after a ko, gyro ball is good but definitely look at payback, it will probably always get the double damage. In gen 2/3 it's spikes, toxic, taunt/protect based on what's available and explosion, since it's always fun to have a pokemon that can go ka-BOOOOOOOM when it's done everything it can. This is especially good in colosseum/xd, where it's all double battles, and you can pair foretress with an offensive partner.
@@iBenjamin1000 forretress isn't the best in casual playthroughs but he's soooo good in nuzlockes. Can switch into anything and take 2-4 hits minimum no matter what, tank explosions like they're nothing, scout dangerous moves with protect and chip away with strength/take down/hidden power. he was one of the best pokemon in my whole team despite not even getting access to his best utility moves(spikes/toxic) until the post-game in GSC. super underrated pokemon imo
I started playing pokemon from gen 3. I had very little knowledge of competitive pokemon until gen 4. However forretress was one of the first mons I ev trained because i heard it sets up spikes and removes them and that was huge (at the time i had no idea how useful they could be but i used them anyway). Till gen 4 because I had little idea about the competitive scene I used forretress so much. To this date I still remember that. And forretress will always have a place in my heart.
Great video! These just get better and better! One thing about Gen 2 Forretress that I think may be noteworthy. Some people have been using Forretress without Rapid Spin by pairing it up with a Rapid Spin user like Starmie. This means that Forrey has one extra moveslot that it can use - which is usually Forrey's biggest problem. The idea here is that you have two Pokemon dedicated to the Spikes war which helps you win it more easily in the long run, and if you manage to win it then you can still make your Forrey useful by Exploding on something - like a Snorlax, Zapdos, Suicune, heck most things - in an attempt to trade one-for-one which gives you insane value out of your Forrey.

A person let my Ferrothorn set up once... They were later destroyed by a Flinch Hax Jirachi. I got 3 layers af Spikes, Stealth Rocks, and Sticky Web. The opponent tried to set up, too. By going for the Nasty Plot on it's Yanmega, and Shell Smash on it's Barbaracle.

The problem I have with forretress is that almost everything has fire and ground coverage that you would want to come in on to rapid spin or starts hazard stacking. Since it can't use moves like recover it gets worn down so easily
MY use of Forretress Stirdy holding red card Max speed and attack MOVES: Stealth rocks, spikes, explosion/Counter and Rapid spin. Quite fun when people setup on it and then get sent out with a red card, bonus points if you can get a counter on a 6x attack mon killing the next mon in as long as it's not a ghost.
i weather the taunts with a full support, its only job is to get at least 2 layers of toxic spikes as fast as possible, custap, endure, spikes, toxic spikes, and a 4th move that i change occasionally, i pair it with zyguarde, gen 6 not 6, as my dragon tailer, the absurd bulk as well as a second mon that will stealth rock while being a threat lets me chip every mon on the team, i also run shuckle to wall and stall anything short of primal kyogre, which i can either force a switch with powersplit on the sturdy, or i can use the nearly halved sp.atk on another mon to revenge kill it, though thats when i say ou and some ass brings ubers, i love using forretress on this team because it takes the pressure off of shuckly on spreading toxics and wittling down the entire team for my cleaners, which i pack 2, 1 regular, 1 mega
I could also see a curse-gyro ball set as well. Slow with stab on gyro ball plus using curse to increase attack and defense (‘While Lowering Speed’) to increase gyro balls damage tenfold!!!
It usually doesnt have the time to set up because it will waste free turns for strong special attackers (or any attacker who has a fire move). With those great defensive trades it should be used as a Supporter.
Koga's Forretress in the Gen 2 Elite Four left a lasting impression on me as a kid for how cool it looked. Pretty glad that cool bagworm fortress thing was alright. 😎
Ah Pineco, the FIRST time as a Pokemon Player when I was a kid...the first "worthless" Pokemon that I used my ONLY Master Ball on? Why? I wanted to get as many Pokemon for the Pokedex as possible, headbutting trees outside of National Park only to find level 10 Pineco who would freaking SELF-DESTRUCT before I could even battle or catch them! I snapped...caught one...and it was useless. I still live with that regret today even after restarting the game time and time again through my teen years....I hate you Forretress...I hate you so much.....
Fun Fact! You said Forretress roughly 77 times this video. Neat! I never ran Forretress in my team comps despite it's perks, I just...found it too passive and prone to the hyper offense. Perhaps I'm too dumb to run it I dunno, it just never appealed. But I only started competitive around Gen 6, so that probably helps. Cool pokemon none the less. How good was Hydreigon actually is my vote!
Furigo Ultimar Run Explosion! That way you can get some nice damage on whatever’s trying to set up in your face (if not outright KO it), and you get some momentum for your team Or, y’know, git gud and predict

Forretress to me seemed like it would stick around due to having a great defensive type, spikes, and rapid spin. If only it got a recovery move like Recover it would probably be more used
Forretress is one of my favorite leads for NatDex AG, honestly. Stealth Rock, Spikes, Toxic Spikes, and Rapid Spin combined with Sturdy/Salac Berry/Max Speed IVs can cripple full legendary teams at times.
You had to cover ALL of the smogon singles metagame just to set the picture of his role troughout gens 2-5. That is something to respect. I feel like after gen 5 the singles metagame got too straightforward for Forretress.
Forretress was certainly great at being a supportive member of a team in being capable of laying down spikes on opposing teams and also remove spikes on your own team. Though simply needed to be careful against the multitude of fire type Pokémon and other Pokémon such as Salamance, Tyranitar, Gengar, and every other Pokémon that can use fire type moves.
False swipe- Deletes video to try and divert attention from multiple form pokemon how good were they actually Arceus- Even if you delete the video trying to ignore the previous comment i am still inevitable. Fear it. Run from it. Destiny still arrives false.

The problem I have with forretress is that almost everything has fire and ground coverage that you would want to come in on to rapid spin or starts hazard stacking. Since it can't use moves like recover it gets worn down so easily

Ya I love using spikes with skarmory on showdown. Stall is fun and useful when ur using it, but annoying when ur the one having to deal with it

Stirdy holding red card
Max speed and attack
MOVES:
Stealth rocks, spikes, explosion/Counter and Rapid spin.
Quite fun when people setup on it and then get sent out with a red card, bonus points if you can get a counter on a 6x attack mon killing the next mon in as long as it's not a ghost.

i weather the taunts with a full support, its only job is to get at least 2 layers of toxic spikes as fast as possible, custap, endure, spikes, toxic spikes, and a 4th move that i change occasionally, i pair it with zyguarde, gen 6 not 6, as my dragon tailer, the absurd bulk as well as a second mon that will stealth rock while being a threat lets me chip every mon on the team, i also run shuckle to wall and stall anything short of primal kyogre, which i can either force a switch with powersplit on the sturdy, or i can use the nearly halved sp.atk on another mon to revenge kill it, though thats when i say ou and some ass brings ubers, i love using forretress on this team because it takes the pressure off of shuckly on spreading toxics and wittling down the entire team for my cleaners, which i pack 2, 1 regular, 1 mega

I could also see a curse-gyro ball set as well. Slow with stab on gyro ball plus using curse to increase attack and defense (‘While Lowering Speed’) to increase gyro balls damage tenfold!!!
It usually doesnt have the time to set up because it will waste free turns for strong special attackers (or any attacker who has a fire move). With those great defensive trades it should be used as a Supporter.
In fact Brock hardly used it but it stayed thoughout the Jotho, Hoenn & Kanto regions before being left @ Pewter Gym while Brock headed to Sinnoh!

Ah Pineco, the FIRST time as a Pokemon Player when I was a kid...the first "worthless" Pokemon that I used my ONLY Master Ball on?
Why?
I wanted to get as many Pokemon for the Pokedex as possible, headbutting trees outside of National Park only to find level 10 Pineco who would freaking SELF-DESTRUCT before I could even battle or catch them! I snapped...caught one...and it was useless. I still live with that regret today even after restarting the game time and time again through my teen years....I hate you Forretress...I hate you so much.....

I never ran Forretress in my team comps despite it's perks, I just...found it too passive and prone to the hyper offense. Perhaps I'm too dumb to run it I dunno, it just never appealed. But I only started competitive around Gen 6, so that probably helps. Cool pokemon none the less.

Furigo Ultimar Run Explosion! That way you can get some nice damage on whatever’s trying to set up in your face (if not outright KO it), and you get some momentum for your team

Forretress to me seemed like it would stick around due to having a great defensive type, spikes, and rapid spin. If only it got a recovery move like Recover it would probably be more used

Forretress is one of my favorite leads for NatDex AG, honestly. Stealth Rock, Spikes, Toxic Spikes, and Rapid Spin combined with Sturdy/Salac Berry/Max Speed IVs can cripple full legendary teams at times.

Why does it fucking matter?
Forretress was certainly great at being a supportive member of a team in being capable of laying down spikes on opposing teams and also remove spikes on your own team. Though simply needed to be careful against the multitude of fire type Pokémon and other Pokémon such as Salamance, Tyranitar, Gengar, and every other Pokémon that can use fire type moves.

Forretress is a massive help in Colosseum & XD: Gale of Darkness (if you evolve the Shadow Pineco) and its one of my favourite Johto Pokemon its also amazing in Contests and one move I always have on Forretress is Zap Cannon.
