  • Galatea Returns to a busy Carlisle.
    Plenty of heavy freight passing by!
    04 July 23
    Starting with a Class 37 en route from Kilmarnock to Derby and with numerous freights throughout the day. In among these came The Dalesman with that most ambiguous of Jubilees, Galatea - in the guise in part of Alberta and then Sierra Leone. Take your pick!

    Must be nice when a steamer arrives by itself and it has to do its own shunting back and for giving you plenty of opportunities to see it in action. Plenty of other good action too Leslie. Very nice. All the best.

      Thanks Tim. Unless there's a weather issue (fire risk or so wet a slipping risk), West Coast tend not to use a support loco with Mk1 stock. Always interesting to see how they'll shunt the stock

    Another nice catch, Les, of 70812 on the logs with 70811 just a few minutes later, the latter caught moving large loads of Scotland down into England. I wonder what is going on. I was speculating whether you had produced a conundrum at 17:30, but it turned out that there were two TPE services in Pl 4 while GALATEA was on C. Clever editing.

    Such a shame that the tracks through the station are covered with weeds. It really looks poor given that Carlisle is a major interchange. I am sure most will agree.

      It's been a problem for a couple of years with network rail apparently satisfied with the situation.

      @@LeslieGilpinRailways Or rather the Treasury is satisfied, Network Rail should, in theory, be pulling their hair out in frustration.

    BR 45627 "Sierra Leone" on the Dalesman tour, not Galatea

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  ปีที่แล้ว

      The loco is officially registered with Network Rail as Galatea. It still carries the number of Alberta as well as Sierra Leone. It carries the Sierra Leone name as part of an agreement with the National Railway Museum following some interaction with the railway museum in Sierra Leone.

    Thank you for answering my query. Who pays for the Thunderbird loco, Avanti? Network Rail? Are there similar arrangements on other main lines e.g. East Coast, GWR?

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  ปีที่แล้ว

      As far as I'm aware there were or maybe still are similar arrangements on the East Coast. I'm not sure who pays- it used to be Avanti on the West Coast.

    Hello Leslie, I have question for you today, hope that´s OK? Is Upperby where there is a triangular track (if this is the correct expression) please?

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Upperby is the site of a former loco depot and now the few sidings are for Network Rail. It is also the apex of two triangles, one being used by the excursion trains more than the other, which is what is left of the goods line. This once bypassed the station but now links the West Coast Main Line at Upperby to the Cumbrian Coast line at Currock Junction.

  • @edfischer8883
    @edfischer8883 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why is there a DRS loco always laid up in Carlisle station?

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is a Thunderbird loco - parked there primarily to rescue any Avanti trains that may fail between stations. Its also used to rescue other trains. There's one parked at Crewe for the same purpose.

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  ปีที่แล้ว

      Simple 1. Home station, 2. I need to be in the city several times a week and 3. Fixed income with limited spare cash for trips. You'll find I do occasionally travel but it's a fair distance before anywhere is as interesting.

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways

      Would you believe its been? I saw videos of Crewe ands it looked like a foest in parts. some weeds are dying back but only on the main lines

    A great video and it's always good to see Galatea, considering why she was saved in the early days. The only problem I have is that this poor engine does not know what to call itself. Seems like a joke that has gone on for too long now. It goes against the grain with me, as it's something that would never have happened during LMS and later BR days. It's also a shame where our railways find it more important to spend money on other things rather than dealing with the weed infested tracks that grace many of our lines now. What does it say about us, standards are going and how things have changed!

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure how long the agreement with the NRM to name it Sierra Leone is for. But yes standards are slipping but no-one will admit its because of cost cutting

    • @levelcrossing150
      @levelcrossing150 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LeslieGilpinRailways Thank you, I did not know about the NRM agreement. It would be at least more acceptable if they have matching names and numbers.
