Hi, I'm Les Gilpin.
I'm a lifelong railway enthusiast now based in Carlisle and a railway historian. I'm spending more and more time recording videos in Carlisle and on the lines radiating from there. Diesel, Electric or Steam - if it looks good I'll record it!
I'm also a keen railway modeller. I'm currently modelling Canadian and US railroads freelance in 1:160 n scale: a new version of my Canuck Union lines. You'll find videos of some of the smaller model railway exhibitions I've attended and occasionally of my own layout.
My railway history interests are mostly the railways of Cumbria (UK) for which I've written 4 books. I'm also interested in the history of railways in Canada and the USA including for some of the more obscure places I've visited. I record hours of video for TH-cam when I go,

Yet another great video Les. Just a quick question for you. The logs going to Chirk Kronaspan, where does it originate from before arriving at Carlisle Yard? I’ve tried realtime trains amongst others & I still can’t find out.
Fearless on driver training? It hasn't done very much since LSL hired it, has it. Quite a lot of ex Caledonian Sleeper stock there too, I presume they use it as overspill storage from Crewe
In the last few minutes the filming was from the "Callie Bridges" and on the right looking north was Kingmoor Shed which is now part of a nature reserve. As a lad 60 years ago that was were my mates and I trainspotted for years.Great times especially as two of my uncles were Kingmoor drivers and my Grand-dad was a goods guard. I actually ended up at Gateshead MPD on the Eastern Region but that's another story.
hi there, what a great loco D400 is, no smoke unlike big bertha, well done to the engineers that keep this iron horse going.,
Do the crew of DR 73909 (2:10) get to chose which siding gets used? I wonder if those white lights on the front of the snow-plough (8:00) are removed before 'doing business'. I doubt they would survive 'first contact with the enemy'. A busy 10 minutes at the end of P4/5 (13:00).
Channel 4 at 8 tonite les 👍
Has Lady Penelope done anything other than sit in that siding (and occasionally shunt up and down) for the last few years?
It must be an exhilarating experience smashing through showdrifts with those 32T ploughs!

Worked the independent ploughs in anger once, in the '80s, from Eastfield in Glasgow, over the E&G to Edinburgh then to the North Berwick branch, the deep cutting in the branch as filling with snow drifting off the fields. You can see virtually nothing behind the ploughs, you only have about a 6" strip of windscreen to see along the side of the plough, even less when actually ploughing. There were small drifts at several platforms along the E&G, blowing the horn like hell to get people to move back, most did, some didn't to their regret got covered in a cloud of snow!
@marshallman7608 That's interesting, not fun in freezing weather.

Hi, Les. Nice video and collection of trains. I guess the ploughs were needed in some places over there. I do wish COLAS would give those 43s a better paint or livery scheme. Oh well. Great assortment today.
@@ModelTrainOutsider Occasionally Colas have repainted their class 43 in that orange yellow with black diagonal stripe which the local enthusiasts prefer. By default they seem to just apply their vinyl logo on top of whatever livery they inherited.
The stockpile of ploughs must be going down, good job that they serviced them early. Fingers crossed that the dreaded white stuff keeps away.
@@Barbarapape this pair had been at York and never reached the Colas dozen at Eastriggs. No idea what the plans are.
@@LeslieGilpinRailways Probably still capable of moving snow, if it ain't broken don't try to fix it

Would the plough train take the long way round to Perth via G&SW to Glasgow. The visibility must be limited like its speed for the WCML. The drivers must have comprehensive knowledge of their route as there is restricted forward vision and need to know ever signals position and aspect. The rail head treatment trains must be reaching the end of leaf removal, could be a change required to fluids used for de-icing.
@@briancooper562 I thought that - hoping to get a shot of them passing those at Eastriggs but in fact they went from siding to siding up the Caley. I expect that the treatment trains will end in the next week or two
well, we have just had some snow so we need more of the snow ploughs.
@@brian.7966 we got none at all. When I rode he Settle Carlisle line on Tuesday we saw none other than on the peaks until beyond Hellifield and into Lancashire
Excellent video Leslie. Keep ‘em coming (currently in Mulberry 1 at Fulbourn Hospital in Cambridge waiting for an appropriate care package to be put in place before I can be discharged back to my maisonette in High Barns in Ely)!

With multiple appearances by Bulleids, Staniers and Gresleys at CAR, it is hardly surprising that the humble snowplough attracts more attention.

@@jeremylewis3514 thanks. Personally I have a thing for a 68 being pushed hard!
Good one Les, 68018 was struggling a bit. I found out why Bo-Bo electrics go around in pairs, it`s because of their crap braking force.
@@headsup2433 thanks. The class 90s are in pairs because a traction motor on each has apparently been disconnected to save electricity! Plus their reliability. The class 88s have double headed the Tesco due to adhesion issues and almost slowing down too much on the hills. Braking capability depends on the length of the train on air braked stock.
@@LeslieGilpinRailways This all makes sense now, they have the same amount of traction (4 motors) but have doubled the brake force, clever.

Did you not zoom into the trains as they leave the station because at night you get lots of noise in the video making the graphics look bad?
@@rxcko172 I try to keep the lens as wide open as possible to let more light in. Zooming in during the dark reduces the light and the camera software reacts by pixilating the image.
The southbound container train with containers name ending in Fret (freight). Is this a international TESCO train with loads from Europe. There is usually a Tesco reefer, and a tanker container on this train north bound, which can also be seen on this southbound. The regular long Tesco train, (all TESCO branded) could be seen a little later. The reason for so many 'spotters' steam nearly 10 months of near weekly steam, ploughs only 2 to 4 times a year in the station.
@@briancooper562The train is under contract I believe to JG Russell. I wasn't aware of the link with Tesco as Cobelfret are a Dutch shipping company.
Great video like always mate. When those 68s in RHTT reach Kingmoor Sdgs, will they work another RHTT working back to Kingmoor TMD?
Thanks. Kingmoor Sidings are immediately north of the DRS Depot and allow access in from the north. Anything shown as starting at Kingmoor TMD is leaving the depot heading south. The RHTT runs in from the morth end, fills up with water and whatever else they use and will come out on schedule from the south. Dont mix up Kingmoor Sidings with Carlisle Network Yard which is whats left of the marshalling yard further north and still referred to by some as Kingmoor Yard!
@LeslieGilpinRailways Ahh thank you for that Les. Also is there a name for the both sets of Sidings by the station. The ones where the 37s / ploughs went in and the one where the HST went in
