The real killer feature to Zune was Zune Pass aka Xbox Music aka Grooves Music. It was hands down so much better than Spotify before Spotify became a thing. It used to integrate with One Drive so songs that were from a personal library would sync along with songs that were from their music service seamlessly especially when the Zune ecosystem transferred to their Windows Phone. To this day I still wished that Microsoft made a Windows Phone in the style of their Zune HD. Also syncing to the Zune was flawless along with the ability to sync via Wifi so that every time you charged it, it would sync any new music that the user preconfigured as a priority. As long as you rated each song, you could literally build a library on your Zune with all of your favorite tunes curated by you without ever connecting it to a pc. Mind you this was before streaming became ubiquitous to the mainstream market.
The Zune HD was not too far off from where they should have been with Mobile, but they really lost the plot with Windows 8 and Kin - but there was no turning back...
@@riopato2009 sounds like exactly what iTunes did. You can buy individual songs and albums, upload custom songs, and have it all seamlessly integrate with Apple Music and have it all sync across your devices automatically, even the custom songs.
@@Denki their biggest mistake with Windows 8 was not emulating their Windows Phone UI design language as an overlay for tablet mode instead of it being a start menu by default. It's probably what ultimately hurt adoption for Windows Phone. People saw what looks like Windows 8 on a phone and was turned off with the experience on PC. Kin was another mistake since it competes with itself , promoting it as a smartphone when it was actually a dying platform for texting that used to be the T-Mobile Sidekick devices. The zune fux's. Had mine up to 2021 then the pad finally broke, and I sold it on eBay. I worked at a warehouse where you couldn't have your phone on the floor, but you could have a mp3 player. I never bought the first model but I still own my 80gb 2nd Generation ZUNE. I loved my Zune back in the day and was so disappointed they stopped supporting them. I still have hundreds of old songs loaded on mine. I haven't used it in forever, but I did charge it up a few months ago just to see if it was still working. Still in perfect condition. I almost upgraded to the Zune HD, but then they announced they were cutting off the Zune store and services, so I didn't bother. But it's a shame more people didn't give it a chance.
I remember seeing a zune for the first time in high school, and it had been out a couple of years or so. No one had one until that point where I met someone who did. Everyone had iPods. They were the thing to have.
For me the best part of the Zune was that when you plugged it into someone else's computer you could just download their songs without having to wipe the Zune first unlike the iPod. Made sharing music with friends so much easier. Miss my little Zune.
Still have my zune. It's the last iteration one with touch controls. Such a throw back. I started with a 30gb originally but I broke the screen so got the newer one after. I have great memories tied to hanging with my best friend with our zunes while Freebording or going to the drive in. We would use the radio mode at the drive in so we could hear the movie in our skull candy headphones. Good times. Might need to look into what I can do with mine now.
I actually just bought this exact Zune (white 30GB) and replaced the drive with that 120GB SSD and a new battery just like a month or two ago. It's my daily driver now and I love the UI a ton.
I had the brown version, it had a translucent style case like the white version with a tint of green. Hard to describe but looked really cool. I loved my Zune.
I've had every gen since the beginning and they were all super awesome and came with their own strengths as well as weaknesses. The OG Zune was the best because it was a tank and could survive a 2 story drop onto asphalt or be thrown from a moving vehicle with only a few scratches. The custom art feature and wireless sync were always amazing. It used to have some weird compatibility with windows media player and the later app Microsoft put out that let you sync music still till about 2017. Of course you couldn't be on the internet when you did it. There was also a cool media search feature and the fm tuner. I spent soo much of the early 00s using the zone. Works great as a flashlight also 😂. Ipod was dope but I definitely used my zune more. That thing could really heat up though lol and the OG japanese zunes were less easily repaired and taken apart.
I had one back in the day. I really liked the gui. Also the ability to upload any files, hint hint napster, made it better than ipod imo. The battery was really good and the storage was adequate for the time. My biggest negative was using windows media player to load songs. It was pretty clunky.
Sandisk Sansa was the first device I saw that came close to the ipod in terms of interface usability. They had a very nice mechanical wheel with an LED backlight, tiny, had a really good interface. Supported multiple music formats.
Played with an iPod and a Zune in the day, picked up a Zune, loved it.... hated when MS killed it but, I did move to Windows phone and loved that way more than iOS or Android. Still today, I have a S23 Ultra but, hate the interface of Android, so I use a Windows Phone loader, looks and works exactly like a Windows Phone including live tiles but, get all the features of a modern Android phone. Really the best of both worlds.
1:16 I had that! The Rio Forge. And then a few years later the Creative Zen (2007). Still have it and it still works, though I don't have much use for it.

The Halo Edition Zune came preloaded with the first season of Red vs Blue iirc. I had one as my second zune. No idea what happened to the first one, but the second one was kleptoed by an ex. Was a great media player, but when phones got smart and still had headphone jacks and sd cards, no use to replace the second one. Feels like so long ago and after watching this video, now even longer.
I owned a Zune and I loved it. The only problem I had was the audio port got warped probably from my mistreatment of it and i started to have issues getting audio to my headphones. But by around this time, smart phones were starting to catch on more and more
I had the zune 30 and the zune hd and the screen is still amazing it shipped with an OLED screen way before that was a thing it was tiny and powerful I wish there was a modern version of the zune
I remember those , i remember i had an ipod and a guy i knew had a zune , i listened to it once and thought the zune sounded a billion times better than the iPod did
Back on 2006 I got one for birthday to replace my iPod 4g, at first look I loved the bluish green color, it has color screen with many features but I can’t simply make it work, it needed to be activated from the software and I never could install that thing, I’ve tried at least 17 different computers, with the installation Cd included, different versions of the software downloaded from the page every single time, and finally it got returned to bestbuy and I got a new iPod video, till today I’m still using one of my iPod’s everyday, i just need to plug and sync new music from my MacBook
I still have my original zune... Packaging still looks brand new. The zune still sits on its speaker dock. I still use it everyday. The zune was highly underrated.
I opted for the ol' brown zune. Im not always an early adopter of tech but when I am, im completely wrong about the direction its going. Remember HDdvd? It was the competitor to Blueray and I was sure it was the future as well.
The squirt feature was great, when we would all go snowboarding with our headphones in, you could all sync the music and be jamming out to the same music across the slope together. I wonder if there’s other ways of doing that today
spotify has this. i think everyone has to have premium. there is a bit of delay so you can't be perfectly in sync. you could also wire an "aux in" and a headphone out to a hand radio and do it that way ...
Much like iTunes and iPods that wiped each time I wanted to move music to them. I can't say I loved the Zune app either back in the day. The app was even demanded to move music to your Windows 7 phone, as it used Zune too
I still have 2 Zunes somewhere in my old electronics bin. One had been updated with a new battery about 8 years ago. I was pretty sure I didn't need the Zune software and just installed my music on it through File Explorer .. which was so much better than using iTunes, which was the pits on windows .. plus you the music you uploaded to the Zune could be DRM free. The biggest hassle was the stupid USB plug. it was prone to snapping off or just not being responsive. It's how most of my friend's Zune's died.
I had a Zune back in the day, until it bricked itself. The fix, if I remember correctly, needed you to let the battery die completely. The problem with that was the battery life in standby was ridiculous, so I just sold it and let the next person deal with that problem.
I had an iPad and I had a Zune. I preferred t he latter. In fact, I purchased it after I'd owned the early iPod. As memory serves, I gave the iPod to my daughter - who wouldn't have been caught dead with an Zune. Gotta have those white ear buds.
Holy crap I completely forgot but I actually had a gigabeat back in 2006 my first girlfriend got it for me as a birthday present I remember having a music and video player but until you said the name I completely forgot what it was called. Think it was 20 or 30 GB I used to have heaps of music and adult videos on there. Have no idea what happened to it it was just gone one day but if I recall correctly I think I had it at a friend's house and one of their friends stole it. I loved that player it was so versatile and had a really decent size screen on it compared to everything else in back then
I had a Zune once, sold to a pawn shop during hard times for a tragic $50 complete in box also. But I most recall my skinny red SONY Walkman MP3 player, which I watched my fav. music vids on a microscopic 1.5" screen!! Hey, it would be AWESOME to see a video on the Walkman player!! 🤞🤓
Got the blue halo 3 edition last year for around $120 with the box in decent condition and everything but the earphones included. I already imported music and used it on my car aux but I need to replace the battery and hard drive it dies in less than 30 min. EDIT: wow the battery and exact same ssd from amazon I have saved on my wishlist, man I’m glad I got mine when I did haha
Wait, Microsoft has magic?! Didn’t it have an OLED display? Unheard of at the time. I remember a misstep where a special edition PINK variant was given away, randomly, to some anonymous purchaser of the Zune. No warning. Just surprise. The Zune was the first real competitor to the iPod. I was already well entrenched in the Apple ecosystem but I admired MS for attempting to play ball. My respect has only grown for the device since
Miss my zune. Me and my sister had em when they first came out for Christmas she had brown. I got the black one. One thing about them is the screen is weak. Had it in my pocket sat on it when i got on the buss and the screen cracked. My sister gave me hers and same thing. And i didnt jump on it. Just sat down on the buss. After that we switched to apple. But it was cool while it lasted. Ggs. I got the little mini red one later down the road for shits n giggles. Its mint in my office in one of my drawers. But those originals also feel good. Its like a weird suade feel to them. They had also made a touch screen one down the road. But yea zune is kinda dead man. Phones have music now lol😅
I remember wanting a zune hd for Christmas and my family was like wtf 😂 , got it and loved it . Wish it had more games available and longer support but it was very cool

I had the zune 30 and the zune hd and the screen is still amazing it shipped with an OLED screen way before that was a thing it was tiny and powerful I wish there was a modern version of the zune
I loved my Zune. I had the military brown Halo 3 limited edition. I miss it.
I remember those , i remember i had an ipod and a guy i knew had a zune , i listened to it once and thought the zune sounded a billion times better than the iPod did
❤my zune. Buying another one soon
IS THAT A DANKPODS REFERENCE I SEE?????? wade would be proud
Haruhi fan! Thats awesome ❤
As a k-on fan! Love haruhi
Same!
I LOVED my Zune. Wish I still had it...
I had a funeral back in the day. I loved it. I might get one again
Much like iTunes and iPods that wiped each time I wanted to move music to them. I can't say I loved the Zune app either back in the day. The app was even demanded to move music to your Windows 7 phone, as it used Zune too
Haruhi Suzumiya noice
I still have 2 Zunes somewhere in my old electronics bin. One had been updated with a new battery about 8 years ago. I was pretty sure I didn't need the Zune software and just installed my music on it through File Explorer .. which was so much better than using iTunes, which was the pits on windows .. plus you the music you uploaded to the Zune could be DRM free.
The biggest hassle was the stupid USB plug. it was prone to snapping off or just not being responsive. It's how most of my friend's Zune's died.
featuring correct era anime music! I love haruhi.
I had a Zune back in the day, until it bricked itself. The fix, if I remember correctly, needed you to let the battery die completely. The problem with that was the battery life in standby was ridiculous, so I just sold it and let the next person deal with that problem.
I remember back in Windows XP era there where Zune themes and wallpapers for XP., I had no idea what Zune was actually a music player.
This for sure makes me want to dig out my Zune and mode that thang!
I thought this video was going to be about a re-release of the Zune in 2024. I'd be down.
I had an iPad and I had a Zune. I preferred t he latter. In fact, I purchased it after I'd owned the early iPod.
As memory serves, I gave the iPod to my daughter - who wouldn't have been caught dead with an Zune. Gotta have those white ear buds.
I had the white OG Zune. Me and one other kid in high school. It was awesome.
I have a zune hd! I got it because it can decode HD radio and it works great for that!
I loved that player it was so versatile and had a really decent size screen on it compared to everything else in back then
Zune had weight and clean look it always caught my eye
One of the best features of the Zune and Zune HD was the built in FM radio. Something that iPods didn't have
Also, HD Radio on the Zune HD still works great
The Zune was able to sync music over WiFi. If I didn’t have a play account with my entire library I’d use my Zune still
Hi Ken, I was wondering if you could share details about your apple watch band looks interesting.
I had both and the zune was so much better.
found my zune, forgot where i left it, cant find it, now want to buy another zune.
I had one and I loved it
still have mine and love it. I would barrow so many CDs from the library and rip them to my computer.
Zune HD to this day is one of the best looking “candy bar” devices ever, imo. These were great, they were just too late to the party.
If you have a dedicated Windows XP or 7 computer Zune will work great. I just got mine recently.
I remember wanting a zune hd for Christmas and my family was like wtf 😂 , got it and loved it . Wish it had more games available and longer support but it was very cool
My brother gave me a zune years ago and I don’t know about anyone else but mine had MP3 and MP4 on it and it was awesome at the time
