It really says something about MS's opinion on the Zune that they completely ejected it from their ecosystem, when their philosophy everywhere else is compatibility at all costs. You can still access the old menu for setting up a Dial-Up internet connection in modern versions of Windows. You still *can't* name files things like CON, PRN, AUX, or NUL because **MS-DOS** used those filenames to output data to certain software or peripherals (like a printer). Every new version of Windows is built on the zombified corpse of the last, leaving behind all of the old protocols JUST IN CASE something old and antiquated comes along and expects things to work a certain way.
And then there's Zune which can't even run it's management software anymore.

My dad used to work for Microsoft, and when the smaller Zune's came out (the one at the end of the video) he got one each for my brother and I. I did really enjoy them. The 'squirting' feature was cool, but yeah, sucked that I would have to plug into my brothers computer to get the mp3 if I liked it, but still cool.
The BIGGEST problem with them.. at least with mine, was it would just freeze. Completely. Like in the middle of a song. The song and playlist would keep going. Buttons didn't work. No force restart. Not even the screen would turn off. And I would have to wait for the battery to die, so I could charge it and use it again. Did it like once a week.
So dad got us iPods haha.

I remember seeing alot of people using a fork of the software from a random forum, to sync to their Zunes.

I have never seen software as good as Zune. We had the Zune HD. With the size of storage, was nice to be able to manage what was synced to the device without having to build a playlist. You just scroll through your library and easily see what was and wasn't on your device. I long for that functionality on my phone.

I gotta be honest, I missed my Zune 30GB for AGES. I even had the video out cable to play movies on a TV. As a budding tech enthusiast, I bulled through the headaches of set ups and absolutely PACKED my zune with my dad's MASSIVE CD collection and also packed it with a few movies. Mine was stolen. Never got it back.

Most likely not, but I may still have the video out cable somewhere.
Not sure I would need to dig through my adapters. The main problem with the CD is it was basically useless almost immediately.
Even by that time they had started internet based updates. The problem was you had to manually download them and there wasn't much reason you would know to do that at the time besides nothing working properly.
If I find the disk I will reply promptly

I had a Zune 30 and loved it, but then the date glitch hit it and bricked it. Luckily I had bought the 2 year protection plan, but when I took it in to get replaced they didn't have the Zune 30 in stock. They did have the Zune 120 and they offered me that as a replacement as long as I was willing to pay the difference in price, which I did. That player lasted me a good couple years. I used it daily until the battery started not to hold a charge as long as it use to. Then the hard drive stopped working. I would power it on and the hard drive spun up made a few clicks then nothing. It wouldn't go past the Zune logo after power up. At that point there was nothing I could do. My protection plan was long expired, and they were recently discontinued when it died and I couldn't find it anymore. I still have it, but it makes me sad because it reminds me of better times when I would just listen to my music all day long.

My first and last experience with Apple was the iPod Touch 3G. The fact that it had a touch screen blew me away, but the locked-down nature of it disgusted me. I used it until it suddenly bricked itself one night. My next multimedia device was the web browser on a Nintendo 3DS, and eventually I got a proper (tiny) android smartphone. I loved the customizability and freedom. The cheap device did wear out its touch screen to the point of unusability after ~2 years. At this point, I decided to try a Microsoft smartphone so that I could confidently say I had tried all 3. Big mistake. The thing was hopelessly fragile and Microsoft's "Windows Phone Store" had just about half of the major apps and almost none of the more obscure ones. It wasn't useful for much more than the basic stuff, though that was most of my usage. The UI looked fairly slick at least, and the device was easy enough to repair that I could replace my shattered screen as an inexperienced teen with parts off alibaba. I moved back to an Android device when the charging port became too challenging to use.
Meanwhile on the computer side of things, I had also always been a Windows user and Windows 8 was a major disappointment, phone-ifying things and also heading in that direction in terms of ignoring basic privacy. I just stuck to Windows 7 until Windows 10 had matured enough to be mostly a drop-in replacement, with shutup10 alleviating most of my privacy concerns. I never considered Apple anymore because I like menus, freedom and interoperability.
Windows 11 is just more of that privacy-disregarding BS, and Apple is only marginally better in that regard, so I made the switch to Linux (OpenSUSE TW). Not a single regret. Freedom is here. I'm dual booting for now just in case I run into anything, but I haven't needed Win10 in a while.
Getting set up took some figuring out because I did it on a brand new device of which the hardware wasn't fully supported, but due to some experience troubleshooting Windows stuff, it was very managable through web searches and politely asking questions in Discord. Getting some stuff like my fingerprint scanner to work is still a WIP, but I'm okay with that.
The trustworthiness and dedication to freedom and accessibility that I find in the world of Linux is well worth it.

I had a Creative Zen Vision M 30gb, enjoyed it a ton, but I wanted more storage. I ended up with a Zune 80gb 2nd gen in black, and I actually loved it. I loved the large screen, the wifi syncing, the touch pad, the entire experience honestly. I just replaced the battery today. Unfortunately the play button stuck a lot because of the shape, when twisted. Not being able to use it as an external drive was quite annoying, as well. I don't care, I still love it.

@@Silver_wind_1987_ Yeah, it does. :) By the way, I am a brown guy. Sadly, a former family friend's father when I was age 8 said a racist comment (which I didn't know at the time), when I told him my favorite color was brown. He said "You must like brown cos that is your skin color". My parents and I broke up friendship due to that, and the fact that his kid is a spoiled brat who wanted to steal like 50 rocks out of our old home's backyard in 2009.

I had a Zune 2 or whatever it was called, with the touch/dpad, and it really was the greatest pocket music player ever made from the old days. It just missed the boat in a big way, as you pointed out. I used that thing deep into the years when most kids were rocking with iphones and ipod touches, and I genuinely loved it and loved using it. I would still use it just for pure satisfying nostalgia, if it wasn't broken. And therein lies another problem. I dropped it ONE TIME from about 2' off the ground, and it got some major disk/screen malfunction after that. There shouldn't have been a disk drive inside of that thing. They had so much potential with that stinking thing, but they shot themselves in the foot over and over. I am now an Apple ecosystem guy through and through, because all of that seamless system cooperation is more important to me personally than anything else. I love not having to think about/troubleshoot simple things. Every time I go "hey I wonder if I can use my iphone and MacBook in conjunction with each other to accomplish _______," it's like Apple has already thought of that and made it so.
