It really says something about MS's opinion on the Zune that they completely ejected it from their ecosystem, when their philosophy everywhere else is compatibility at all costs. You can still access the old menu for setting up a Dial-Up internet connection in modern versions of Windows. You still *can't* name files things like CON, PRN, AUX, or NUL because **MS-DOS** used those filenames to output data to certain software or peripherals (like a printer). Every new version of Windows is built on the zombified corpse of the last, leaving behind all of the old protocols JUST IN CASE something old and antiquated comes along and expects things to work a certain way. And then there's Zune which can't even run it's management software anymore.
Yeah I found out telnet was still burried in Windows 10 activated it and found the gateway for an old mud mmorpg and joined in I had alot of fun doing that before the hdd on the computer took a shit maybe I should see if its still in Windows 11 somewhere also you can find all kinds of random odds and ends from ms-dos 5.1 in there
Trust me, as a dev in a windows ecosystem, I'm so thankful every day they keep all that compatibility around. Thanks to some third party software that hasn't seen an update in ages, I was rooting through official Microsoft documentation from the mid aughts on registration free COM DLLs and side by side manifests that all still works and has support in fully up to date Visual Studio. They do some things really really well, and suck so bad at everything else
I loved mine, too! Especially loved that I could stream and download music via Wi-Fi and didn't need to plug it into the computer just to get some new tunes. Pretty sure iPod wasn't about that life yet. And I REALLY loved the look and feel of the Zune HD
I really admire the overall visual design of the UI, user manual, and packaging. They aged really well, doesn't seem like they'd look out of place at all today - especially considering how oh so 2000s Windows Aero and Apple UIs of the time looked.
Absolutely. It was the predecessor of the Windows Phone, which was a great OS (felt more mobile-native than iOS and less fickly than Android). But of course it is another whole story of Microsoft messing up in consumer electronics.

Honestly, back in like 06-07 when they launched, I got one bc it looked pretty decent, had a radio that didn't completely suck for that time, and it held as much as the ipods and on sale, I got mine for like $150, maybe a little less. It worked for what I wanted until it was stolen..... 1 week before an article about how they sucked came out and even pawn shops didn't really want them. Also, apparently they touted DRM but um........ that obviously didn't work at all, lol
It worked really well on the sharing feature (3 plays only). It was never meant to prevent you from adding media to your own device. It was actually incredibly open-ended compared to the iPod, even accepting additional media formats.
I’ve been putting off this episode.. I had an old friend that got hooked on drugs and stole my Zune. Sold it for 1, maybe 2 pills. But I had that thing for a few years and absolutely loved that thing. And despite having an iPhone, AirPods, Apple Watch, iPad, etc.. I might have to grab me a Zune again.

I mean the ps1 classic was great once it was modded and the price drops. 30$ and a thumb drive for a decent looking ps1 emulator box and 2 usb gamepads? Yes please
You aren't far off with that actually, I'd say it was almost as big of a flop as the PlayStation Classic just simply due to poor timing on Microsoft's part, but back when the iPhone 5 was new, the Zune HD was all I had, and it's a damn good music player in my opinion. Can't really do anything else, but it plays music pretty well, in fact I'd go as far to say that the sound quality there is better than it is on my Moto G7
12:00 the best part about the wifi was (as I recall) wireless syncing. Drop the Zune in the charger, it'd connect to your pc on the network and automatically sync music that'd been dropped in the music folder, etc
My dad used to work for Microsoft, and when the smaller Zune's came out (the one at the end of the video) he got one each for my brother and I. I did really enjoy them. The 'squirting' feature was cool, but yeah, sucked that I would have to plug into my brothers computer to get the mp3 if I liked it, but still cool. The BIGGEST problem with them.. at least with mine, was it would just freeze. Completely. Like in the middle of a song. The song and playlist would keep going. Buttons didn't work. No force restart. Not even the screen would turn off. And I would have to wait for the battery to die, so I could charge it and use it again. Did it like once a week. So dad got us iPods haha.
I babysat instead of hanging out with friends for one back in 2009 or 2010 and got it engraved and everything. That thing never left my side. I was playing games on it and everything. In seventh grade my mom got me one of the smaller ones for Christmas and I still liked it but I LOVED my hd
It's still ironic looking at this video because the Groove music player software (meant to replace Media Player) has Zune as it's internal name in windows
These weren't bad devices at all, they just didn't receive the support that they should've. Not to mention by the time that they launched them, Apple already had the market share and millions of iTunes customers.
As a contrarian, I was really into the Zune around the time this came out. Fortunately I was also a very lazy contrarian so I never actually got around to buying one. I eventually was gifted an iPod by my company as part of a bonus, so that's how my choice in the Player Wars was made.
Hearing someone talk about a Microsoft product as the alternative product for contrarians, circa mid-2000s, is really funny to me. :-D It just goes to show how thoroughly the iPod annihilated the PMP market at the time.
I might have been one of the few folks who actually loved their zune. The large clear screen made it great to watch movies on the go. The operating system was clean and easy to use. It just came out at a weird time and everyone was too focused on apple.
13:14 - I remember the day I discovered Pandora. A guy at work created a station for us to listen to while we worked. I thought it was cool, so I got it to listen to while studying. I made a station based on one relaxing song to listen to at bedtime, and I've been listening to that one station every night for almost 15 years now.
Man. I remember in school all the cool alternative kids had a zune for a while. I was a very uncool alternative kid and wanted one soooo bad, but my family couldn't afford one so I got the $15 mp3 players from walmart. Turns out I didn't miss much.
The Zune was actually a great MP3 player. Combined with the Music Pass, it was one hell of a way to discover and download music. The Zune HD was even better! I miss my Zune.
Never fret. I had a late Sharp walkman when everyone was into Discmans (or Discmen?). When I could finally afford a portable CD player, iPods were over a year into the market. It was not until 2005 that I could (at last) own a 1st gen iPod Nano... still have it, still works.
I have never seen software as good as Zune. We had the Zune HD. With the size of storage, was nice to be able to manage what was synced to the device without having to build a playlist. You just scroll through your library and easily see what was and wasn't on your device. I long for that functionality on my phone.
7:44 Ahh I remember when a kid back in school pulled out his iPod Shuffle, teacher cracked it until he plugged it in and used it as a Flash Drive and I just remember thinking, "Damnnnnnnnnnn we really are living in a future" ahh the good ol' days
@@aterack833 Haha sorry it's probably an Australian/ NZ thing, it's basically slang for getting angry, like the breaking point. So in this case the teacher got angry cause the kid had pulled an iPod out in class
I pretty much owned every version of the Zune, including the beautiful Zune HD. I was burning my CDs in mp3 and also ripping movies into files compatible with the Zune. I didn’t much care about the music store and in my vague memory, it was actually super easy. Like I don’t remember struggling with it at all. I use to travel for work and I remember taking my Zune along with all the movies and music I like without having to lug CDs or a portable DVD player. I loved it.

@prod_normz It came in 120. I still have a black 120. There were other improvements too. The screen was better, pictures looked great on it. Plus, if I remember correctly, it DID function as an external drive. Or maybe you had to get the songs into zune first, then transfer. Idk, I was about 17 years old and I loved it.
Man, I had an Archos 504... That thing was great! I was an early cable-cutter and I used the Archos (with the dock and remote) as my entertainment center. Between all the free TV/Movie apps and the ability to go online, I never felt I was lacking in entertainment media. They were extremely thin on the ground in the US, though. I bought mine off ebay (after doing some research into the unit), and I didn't know anybody who ever even heard of it, let alone owned one.
I got one a few months ago (stole it from the recycling bin after my neighbor put it there at my Staples store) and found she had porn preloaded on it😂
This is going to sound aincient. But a long long long long time ago when Microsoft Phones were actually somewhat common over here in UK I had a HTC Mozart for a while. The software HTC Provided actually worked better for syncing music to phones and Zunes than the Microsoft made stuff. I remember seeing alot of people using a fork of the software from a random forum, to sync to their Zunes. This was back in the Windows 7 days so not sure all too relevant. But completely puts into perspective how poor MS was with their support... When HTC can do it better, and it's meant for phones.
Oh heck I might have to look into that then! Maybe it was just arrogance from MS around this time as they really didn’t seem to be taking things very seriously!
@@DankPods The files might still be out there somewhere. I remember the HTC Suite by default having a heavy Zune Infuence. Best of luck with it mate. Hope you can stick some more CASIOPEA on there like that.
I'm going to make note of this for myself, just in case I ever replace the hard disk on my Zune (a brown 30 gb just like this one, lol). They made huge hard drives in the weird 1.5 inch form factor this uses. imagine stuffing 200gb into one of these!
I still got my 80gb and still love it despite the fact that Spotify dethroned it really bad. The earphones that came in the box were the most luxurious thing coming as standard pack at the time
*"It's basically a modern triple a game"* That line aged perfectly. Edit:- to all the braindead people crying in replies, it was specifically meant for cyberpunk.
Yeah looking into the gen 2 Zune looks like it was amazing, but it’s just that it’s predecessor sucked, also I have to wonder what the Zune Nano was like
I used to love my zune hd player the problem was not enough apps to compete with iPod touch and the zune music pass was 14$ a month then went down to 10$ a month and the other bad thing is not every song was available with a music pass subscription
I had the original Zune brown and The Zune HD. I kinda loved them. More than anything the software was better at making good playlists than most of the current services. Literally just the fact that you could sort music by play count.
It was genuinely great software. Everything was drag-and-drop; plus, it would typically update your media automatically (album art, track names, etc). It didn't bother you about DRM or anything. It was so unobtrusive. All you had to do was ensure you had the right file type and *bam* ! Synced.
"Microsoft rushed the Zune; 's basically a modern AAA game" Okay, Jim Sterling ps you have my subscription edit: after seeing those vintage Ballmer clips, wish I could offer you a second sub ;)
I gotta be honest, I missed my Zune 30GB for AGES. I even had the video out cable to play movies on a TV. As a budding tech enthusiast, I bulled through the headaches of set ups and absolutely PACKED my zune with my dad's MASSIVE CD collection and also packed it with a few movies. Mine was stolen. Never got it back.
Most likely not, but I may still have the video out cable somewhere. Not sure I would need to dig through my adapters. The main problem with the CD is it was basically useless almost immediately. Even by that time they had started internet based updates. The problem was you had to manually download them and there wasn't much reason you would know to do that at the time besides nothing working properly. If I find the disk I will reply promptly
I had a Zune 30 and loved it, but then the date glitch hit it and bricked it. Luckily I had bought the 2 year protection plan, but when I took it in to get replaced they didn't have the Zune 30 in stock. They did have the Zune 120 and they offered me that as a replacement as long as I was willing to pay the difference in price, which I did. That player lasted me a good couple years. I used it daily until the battery started not to hold a charge as long as it use to. Then the hard drive stopped working. I would power it on and the hard drive spun up made a few clicks then nothing. It wouldn't go past the Zune logo after power up. At that point there was nothing I could do. My protection plan was long expired, and they were recently discontinued when it died and I couldn't find it anymore. I still have it, but it makes me sad because it reminds me of better times when I would just listen to my music all day long.
I missed my Zune as well, I had one of the smaller ones that looked like one of the old ipod nanos and I ended up losing it in high school and never got it back. Not gunna lie I still miss it

The brown was freaking awesome compared the every other silver/grey player out there. I worked at a retailer here in the states and they had one of these loaded with music on a display - I loved going to playing different tracks on it. We had it hooked up to a good stereo and the sound (at the time) was amazing. I really liked it compared to the ipod which I found somewhat confusing to navigate and load tracks onto.
I had a zune and fun fact one of my favorite songs is from the sonic youth titled “diamond sea” and on the zune market place it was removed from the album cause the track was too big 😔
I remember this era. It was wild, that first Zune was indeed absolutely underwhelming. The second generation, THAT thing genuinely impressed me. As ya mentioned excellent feel in the hand, the combo touch/d-pad was brilliant to use. Can't speak to any of the sync side since I was fully Mac/iPod but at least the hardware was nice.
f you're a ZUNE LOVER, and a enthusiast for music creation, here's a NEW music roulette style series called, "WHAT ARE YOU ZUNE!". Watch a music producer samples 3 tracks, at random, from a ZUNE , and recreates a whole new music piece. enjoy! th-cam.com/play/PLLjs8iksOIxkn01fs5-sWcBo4Zr_BDQnT.html
That's good. I wasn't going to say anything about the thumbnail but, "hot mess" in the US typically refers to a good looking woman that's had to much to drink.
I feel I stand as the lone remaining Zune fan. Back in the day I bought my first 20 gb model from Woot (back when the site still operated on the single item per day format) for $20. There was a lot it couldn't do, but it did what I needed, music and podcasts, very well. What I possibly loved most about it and the OG IPod, was the click wheel. I could navigate my Zune without taking it out of my pocket, which is something you just can't do with touchscreen devices. I collect Zune devices and peripherals now because I have a soft spot for failed hardware. 🙃
I owned a Zune HD but my real found memories come from the 120gb brick (gen 2) I owned in middle school. I pirated 100% of my music back then and had a collection exceeding 60gb, it was a pain to add everything to itunes at that time. The lack of app support was a serious drawback but it did everything I wanted and was sturdy. I think I just enjoyed having a brick in my pocket.
@@reeepingk ummm no. Nice try with the insult but you obviously have no idea what you’re talking about. iTunes locked up on windows with that large of libraries.
I forgot the Zune existed until that scene in Guardians of the Galaxy 2:Electric Boogaloo, where at the end of the movie, Peter has lost his trademark 70's Walkman, and his space pirate friend hands him an MP3 player he found in the trash and tells him that it's called a "Zune". Forgot that entire movie and only remember that bit.
I was gifted a black Zune right when it came out. I still have it. Still use it. I love it. The other day it fell out of my pocket when I was biking. Straight on to the concrete. It survived! Granted, I had a case around it but still. I think it looks really cool and feels high-end. The PC software for it could have been better :D
You missed the best thing that came in the box! the Zoon-branded anti-slip pad for your car! You could place your Zoon on the dash where it would be quickly killed by the sun, and the first time you had to brake hard it would FLY out the window. Good times. (full disclosure: I still have mine.)
Zune and Zune HD were great. I still have a Zune HD but idk where my charge cord is. I vastly preferred it to the ipod. The drag and drop nature of the Zune software was superior to the iTunes sync crap. My mum had an ipod and we had nothing but trouble with it every time she had to sync music to it.
Man I have the Metal Zune with touchpad and vibration feedback, I loved that thing! The games were fun and the UI was awesome with custom backgrounds haha, I had to get that out and charge it after watching this, too many memories!!!

Yes, the Zune HD had a superbe design and UI.
It makes sense, since the Zune's UI is basically Metro before Metro was actually a thing.
Which font are they using on it? Looks nice. But then I'm more of a Tahoma guy over Segoe
Absolutely. It was the predecessor of the Windows Phone, which was a great OS (felt more mobile-native than iOS and less fickly than Android). But of course it is another whole story of Microsoft messing up in consumer electronics.

I love my Zune HD! It stopped syncing its music :(
Man I have the Metal Zune with touchpad and vibration feedback, I loved that thing! The games were fun and the UI was awesome with custom backgrounds haha, I had to get that out and charge it after watching this, too many memories!!!
Your videos just popped up in my recommendations a few days ago and now I'm hooked to your content. And I actually don't really know why. I mean, you are doing a great job at entertaining me, but if I'm being honest, iPods and stuff aren't even that interesting to me. But since I can't stop watching you videos you got my sub!
I'm definitely looking forward to your next videos. Keep on going!
Once in a while I’ll charge up my Halo 3 Zune and take a college nostalgia trip lol
That "Feeling peckish? Have a poo!" - I laughed so hard my neighbors must've though I'm going crazy.
I found mine and bought a charger thanks to your inspiration!
3000 songs from when i was 13. That made me very happy. Thank you
Please review the entire SanDisk Sansa lineup. The later versions like the Sansa View were great media machines for the discounted prices
I had a Sanaa after having had iPods and I honestly loved it. They could also run rockbox which was fun.
My first mp3 was a Sansa e260.
I had a 4gb Sansa with an SD card slot and it was the best MP3 player I ever had.
@@angy8yury I think that was the model I had too. It had a blue clickwheel.
I remember my moms SanDisk Sansa, I don't know how it broke but it did, it was a good little machine
Can you imagine someone saying:
"hey, can you _squirt_ some music at me m8?"
@Laith Rafid I'm worried about you

I didn't expect to see CASIOPEA here, such a great band
Not like they're obscure. It's not 1988. They're bigger than ever now because of the internet
I would love to see a perspective on the zune HD since it really felt like a much better sequel
The hd was solid wish I still had mine
yeah that was the one I had. I remember really liking it but I had not context of its competitors to really say whether or not it was good, it played music in my ears which was really cool.
Yeah, I'd like to see a video on the HD too. Great little player. Limited, but it had a gorgeous design and UI, and had a ton of potential.
If I could get a new one today I would in a second. Loved mine and used it happily until the day it died
@@stofio to be honest, who needs a zune of 30gb in 2023??? Cheap android smartphones support exfat or micro SD xc which can go up to 2tb . Get a galaxy a03 or something, put a 512 gb micro SD card and you can put your entire music collection on it
I actually really dig the brown color with the silver accent. It'd not the easiest thing to do but if done right brown can be a pretty color.
Brown is actually one of my favorite colors. :)
@@thatguyalex2835 brown with a lighter silver looks....OK
@@Silver_wind_1987_ Yeah, it does. :) By the way, I am a brown guy. Sadly, a former family friend's father when I was age 8 said a racist comment (which I didn't know at the time), when I told him my favorite color was brown. He said "You must like brown cos that is your skin color". My parents and I broke up friendship due to that, and the fact that his kid is a spoiled brat who wanted to steal like 50 rocks out of our old home's backyard in 2009.
@@thatguyalex2835 50 rocks!??! That's like a few thousand dollars depending on how big they are! I'd be so angry. Brown is very soothing heck 90% of our house is different shades of brown...our dog is brown and black!
@@Silver_wind_1987_ Nah, they were small rocks (0.5 inches across), boring ones, but he wanted to find an agate, cos he was a 9 year old geology head in 2009. Don't get me wrong, I have a small rock collection, cos I like science also, but I don't steal rocks from someone else's landscaping.
I can't stress enough how much I LOVE how I can hear the annoyance in his voice. The sarcasm is also a nice touch. It's hilariously awesome lol
I had a black Zune 30GB model from 2008 to 2013. It brought a lot of fond memories, as I listened to music with it on trips. I even had over 2000 songs on it. Unfortunately, it's hard drive went faulty and died, so I got a iPod Classic 160GB model the same year from someone who barely used it, which currently has over 4000 songs on it. Despite it having more space, I will always remember my old Zune.
