The problem about "gaming phone" is that most of us just dont spend $800 to $1000 for just gaming.. most of us would like to have a well rounded phone 🤳📱
@fricki1997 I think making a controller mandatory for portable gaming experiences that arent compromised by a touch screen only is good Idea. You can spend less than even 50-60$ on a decent controller for your phone. And of course youre gonna at least need snapdragon 865 or their 8 gen series to get decent perfomance Proton isn't magic. But it can be done, and Apple users will figure out how to cope about the Iphone being better without this feature.
@goldy_on_pc930 You can get close to steam deck like perfomance if not better on a last gen chip if you have good cooling especially if you compare emulation perfomance. All thats required is software to make it happen.
The only gaming phone that seams to make sense to me is the Red Magic phones. Their design with no camera bump, built-in cooler fan, enormous battery, and top-tier SoC for $650 is insane value, even with the mediocre cameras and 2 years of software support.
So thinking about my gaming phone (a red magic 6 pro) this would be my personal perspective of why they're great...the aesthetics/design is awesome imo. The metal, RGB lights on the back the glass and metal design ect. Stands out. I personally don't like having the same thing as everybody else. If you pull out any iPhone pro model or any Galaxy ultra model from the last 3 years, you immediately know what it is. With this one. You have no idea what it is and it's a fun and cool conversation to have. The fast charging definitely spoils me. All the other phones feel slow in comparison to the 67 w charging speed. Although there's no waterproofing, this allows for internal fan cooling that works perfect for my needs as well as very loud speakers that can be enjoyed in and outside of gaming. Also, having a headphone jack is a great feature for the system I have in my car since it offers the best audio quality. The one thing I will concede is it's ridiculous that a phone with 16 gigs of RAM is stuck on Android 12. However, on that same note with 16 gigs of RAM, there's absolutely no slowdowns performance issues or anything. So with that said, I can't really complain about not having the newest version other than on principal. It doesn't affect my day-to-day, but a Galaxy a54 shouldn't have longer, better software support than this phone
I like the gaming phones larger capacity battery, better cooling for longer gaming sessions and having features like faster charging than the mainstream smartphones as well as having the headphone jack for zero latency gaming without relying on using e-waste like bluetooth headphones with batteries that are not user replaceable when the batteries have already degraded on bluetooth audio devices. There are wired headphones with user replaceable cables with built in microphones with quality that sounds superior to the there bluetooth counterparts with no compression like there is with bluetooth and even balanced cables with audiophile headphones and hifi dacs and amps to improve the audio experience.
got a redmagic 9s pro ,.. one reason why i got was that it was cheaper then the s24 Ultra ..the usual 3.5 mm jack thing aside ... it also has an infrared port .. which like rare to find on phones nowadays
If those specs don't have that on entry level ones then I hope they may suffer the same fate as the Note 7 until they made it 400 bucks no price adjustment for life istg
i prefer to play on phone with the touch screen rather than an external controller or progammable buttons on the phone . And as the performance , a chip which can run atleast 60fps on mid to high settings while sustaining it for atleast 3 hours with no major heating is perfectly good for me.
Vibe I get is that these are really for the specific Asian markets where desktop PC and console ownership rates are a fair bit lower and phones are used as a primary gaming device. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one of these in the wild on the subway in Toronto. They definitely aren’t for me. The bulk of my phone gaming is running Delta/Gamma on my iPhone, and that works awesome already.
I never could be bothered to play a full fledged game on a small screen ( only during the PSP era ). So these things are absolutely not for me and all of them run android.
I can kinda see the appeal of having a decent gaming experience on a mobile device, but....once you're slapping on coolers, controllers, the charger or maybe even an external screen, man, why not go for a console or PC straight away? I'd love to see wider adoption of the second side-mounted charging port and additional touch-sensitive regions on the rim of the phone though.
@@fricki1997 how mobile are PCs and consoles ? Even with the extra crap you can throw in a bag or in a big enough pocket. Gaming laptops are heavy and console while on the go isn’t a thought unless you want to lug around a bunch of stuff in a suitcase
@@HughJashole69there’s handheld consoles, for the price of this ROG phone you can get a flagship phone and have a device that will play actual AAA games. This phone isn’t worth $1500 especially with the atrocious software support.
The only thing a gaming phone has the right to exist is because of Red magic series, Flat design (front and back), Headphone Jack, Giant battery, additional buttons and built in FAN. The only flaw is the cameras but the real thing holding it back is the software updates. Dunno about Asus aside from having an additional type C (I love that.) but the gimmicks doesn't justifies the price, it's trying to be everything at the cost of price while having the downside of lower software updates. If Red Magic copies Asus having a "gaming" phone no longer mean anything.
i’ve always wanted a gaming phone yet i don’t wanna speed so much for gaming phones when they all have crappy software as in 1 or 2 major updates for a device ranging from 800-1200$ with a camera that can’t compete with samsung galaxy s24 or iphone 16 lineups. plus asus has big batteries in them but they tend to drain relatively fast for such a large capacity, likely just adding high capacity to make up for lack of optimization (and i love Asus)
less OS updates are kinda turning into a pro than a con to me now a days , like keep the security stuff coming , but system updates mostly just mess up how I use the phone more than give me a better experience now , unlike in the past where it usually makes the phone feel better to use.
Well other people want other things fixed, that’ll lead to your experience dampening since updates that fix one thing usually triggers breaks on other things. I know for damn sure there are plenty of bugs on this phone just like every other phone.
I think the Redmagic phones are better. I've never owned one, but came really close to buying one. Updates made me go elsewhere. So I've watched a bunch of videos about all of them them.
If you buy a gaming phone as an adult you have to reevaluate your life. Just get a cheaper phone and something like a steamdeck that can play real games, not just mobile garbage 😂
Why carry around Steamdeck that's 10 times larger, 2 hour battery life? When Gaming phone fits in your pocket, 6 to 8 hour battery life and can cast to bigger screens anyway when needed plus it can be used as phone when not gaming 💀
The problem about "gaming phone" is that most of us just dont spend $800 to $1000 for just gaming.. most of us would like to have a well rounded phone 🤳📱
Just wait until proton for ARM launches and every android phone suddenly can play x86 based games.
But how many of them will be 1) playable well without adding a host of periphery and 2) optimised enough to give a smooth experience?

I don’t think you know how much raw horsepower and thermals u need to run modern x86 games especially for anything launched in the last 5 years

Winlator lets you play Windows games on Android and is available right now. Flagship phones can play GTA 5 and Fallout 4 at 60-ish fps
The prominence of mobile gaming in Asia is crazy, I even saw a homeless guy grinding away in PUBG
How do you know he was homeless?

Still rocking a LG v60 just for the DAC and audio jack but use my pixel for daily.

I use wired headphones on my 16 pro max. Takes a $10 dongle. Gaming phones are a waste of money.
Most of the flagships don't have audio jacks unfortunately
