Dude! This is something we were really missing! Just the experience of having your favorite 150 songs in your pocket was incredible! I miss having an isolated music device completely separate from my phone.
It has been a while since I modified an iPod, but I believe places sell (or sold) thicker backs specifically designed for the large battery mods. Also, one reason why I went with an older iPod in the first place was actually that it lacked Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. I wanted a device for music at work and I wasn't allowed to have anything with wireless connectivity. The older iPods worked great for that... after swapping the hard drive. The one thing that I wish I could change? Better software for the iPod. I'm pretty sure I looked at RockBox, but I can't remember why I didn't use it in the end. I do recall that my main complaint was the difference between album handling between the iPod and iOS. I think it has to do with there being two Artist tags used for music files where one is more geared toward specifics for a song (e.g., listing a featured artist) and the other is the generic artist (i.e., whose album it is). If I recall, the iPod has no support for the latter, which meant that it kept separating anything with "Artist ft. Other Artist" as separate from "Artist".
I have a 160 GB (6th gen?) iPod classic I bought new back in January 2013. Still in working order, with the original battery, with no visible leaking or swelling. Not yet, anyway. Haven't gotten around to modding it and the only changes I'm comfortable to safely attempt are a battery replacement and switching the HDD for an SD or microSD adapter board. I have installed rockbox on it. In fact, you should be able to dual boot rockbox and the native iPod OS on several iPod models, and switch between them by keeping certain buttons pressed during the startup of the device. I decided to keep both because the original iPod OS has a simpler, cleaner, smoother interface, but rockbox was the only way I could find to bypass the loud volume limitation enforced on iPods sold in the EU at the time. I could replace the circuit board with one harvested from an iPod made for the US (or at least non EU) market but I want to keep as much of it original as possible. Alternatively, according to some google searches, I could replace certain chips on the circuit board with ones harvested from non EU boards, but I lack both the hardware and the skill to perform such a feat at this time.
Why would you do all that when you can just buy a cheap mp3 player. Even then I don't get the point of any of this when Spotify exists. It's so cheap it's basically free and I get a way better OS for my music. And it's already with me. Tell me your nerd that doesn't get laid without telling me.

I not only remember the constant weird endorsements from U2, I remember the time Apple forced a U2 album into everyone's library without permission, and the backlash was so severe that they had to release a special tool to let people remove the album from their Apple accounts.
Seeing the rockbox interface brought back so many memories of when I was modding and repairing iPods back in the day. There used to be an ipodLinux distro as well. Usually when I needed more space I would just use a 80gb model back, but that was way before USB C.

I love this kind of stuff. Having everything in your phone is becoming a hassle when you can't do three things because they all need to full control. I want to make a modern zune now.
This full clear iPod looks so insanely amazing!!, I have one from elite obsolete electronics but only have the clear front plate and I’m seriously thinking to make it fully clear, i also made the 3d model for the back plate. Here are some clarifications, resin 3d prints shrink around 0.2mm that’s not much but enough to avoid high precision components won’t fit. Second, you could avoid all Bluetooth soldering, there is an incredible PCB mod by moonlit market that allows you add Bluetooth and usb c for charge and sync (this last with couple soldering points, I’m not sure if works for audio too) on your device, this can save you so much time and space. The screen it’s so good too, couple years a go I’ve seen an oled prototype and hope it can be released someday, meanwhile you made the definitive ipod
Thank you for all the info. I did look at the Moonlight kit, but honestly I wanted a more DIY approach. It's more fun and makes for a better video when I get to figure this stuff out for myself haha.
My middle finger to Spotify was setting up a Jellyfin server with all of my music as FLACs and then using Finamp on my phone which connects to it and can even download and transcode music for offline playback. And since it's proxied via a VPS to the outside Internet I can listen to my music wherever there is an Internet browser. However having a physical device only dedicated to music is also nice.
I miss dedicated MP3 players. A lot of people will say you can just use your phone (either services like spotify or the mp3s themselves) but I always found using the phone to be quite inelegant and clunky when I'm trying to do things that isn't calling or texting. Like yeah, I can eventually get something set up with it, but it feels more like a stopgap measure than something I can feel comfortable with. Not to mention how weighty phones can be when you might only need/want something lightweight and distraction free (say at the gym or at home exercising) And yes, I know you can still get some dedicated devices on places like Amazon from companies no doubt out of China, but a lot of them come with some rather primitive/cheap software. Making it harder to get the kind of control you'd want with mp3 players today (things like easily setting up playlists or reliable bluetooth) What I'd really like is more like something with dedicated software that goes out of its way to do more than bare minimum. Much like how rockbox works on these old devices except on its own dedicated device. Maybe something like that exists. Though I haven't really found much in a reasonable price point yet.
Oh man this takes me back, just got hit with the nostalgia of ordering custom frames and buttons for my Nokias and Sony Ericssons, then repairing and modding the earlier iPhones, jailbreaking, Cydia mods and getting stuck in recovery mode every other week 🤣 I turned into a stock npc over a decade ago but it would be so fun to play around again.
If you’re gonna have your music as audio files on a device, both android phones and iPhones still have MP3 functionality where you can just put the files into the phones and have the phone work like an mp3 player instead of having to stream music

If you're going to solder using hot air, it's best to use solder paste instead of trying to tin the pads individually.
Wow, amazing video!!
Thinking about to restore 2 of my old iPods and this gave me a big push toward my goal!
I’m liking this new Zac posting
I only discovered your channel because it autpolays when I sleep every night. I hope it never stops autoplaying. Thanks for the good dreams bro
However having a physical device only dedicated to music is also nice.
it's giving ship of theseus 😂
Fr tho. Incredible work bro. This is the iPod little me couldn't have even imagined.
Yessss love that you’ve been releasing more content thank you so much ❤
I try to put out as much as I can! These videos take a while to make and then edit haha
Been waiting for an iPod video
I miss dedicated MP3 players. A lot of people will say you can just use your phone (either services like spotify or the mp3s themselves) but I always found using the phone to be quite inelegant and clunky when I'm trying to do things that isn't calling or texting. Like yeah, I can eventually get something set up with it, but it feels more like a stopgap measure than something I can feel comfortable with. Not to mention how weighty phones can be when you might only need/want something lightweight and distraction free (say at the gym or at home exercising)
And yes, I know you can still get some dedicated devices on places like Amazon from companies no doubt out of China, but a lot of them come with some rather primitive/cheap software.
You should make a playlist just on you modernizing all of whatever so you don’t have to go back and look at what you’ve done
This is probably the most in depth ipod mod I've ever seen!
ive never been a fan of clear cases but the mods are legendary. the clicky hold switch got me to hit the like button on this video
If you’re gonna have your music as audio files on a device, both android phones and iPhones still have MP3 functionality where you can just put the files into the phones and have the phone work like an mp3 player instead of having to stream music
